I just witnessed this man pull an engine out of a bulldozer on the side of the road, and yet I constantly pass grown men trying to flag down CAA or AAA for a flat tire. What a pro.
I worked 4 a sawmill, as a maintenance man 4 a bit. There was this old Cat loader, that was getting AF in the eng oil. The boss said 2 keep it runnin, were gonna get a better 1, soon. So I changed the oil, drained the Rad and refilled with straight water. Every morning I would drain the water off. I was off 4 a few days, in that time the engine was full where the water was drainin out off the crank breather. It kept runnin, till they got a better 1. Good field service vidja.
I really enjoyed this vid Warren. It felt like a bit of an adventure, going into the California woods, pulling a dozer engine and then surgery back at your shop. A few decades back I bought a 72 Camaro convertible off a man that just got fed up trying to restore it. Paid $500.00. It had new everything, everywhere. He must have spent thousands on it. His first adventure in crazy land, he could set the distributor and ten minuets later it was crap again. Took him months pulling his hair out before he called me the first time. The little pin that holds the gear on the bottom had sheared on his brand new distributor. At the time that was like .02 cents. But the straw that broke the camels back, the charging system would not work. At all. He replaced everything. Multiple times. He had this pretty chrome bracket with the shinny red urethane grommets holding the alternator. His transmission and motor mounts where blue urethane. Never seen ones like that before or since. But what it didn't have was a ground from the frame to the block. All that pretty urethane did a great job..................... Of isolating the charging system from this thing called the battery. Go figure. I think I paid $5.00 for a ground strap. Sold the car the next week for $8,500.00. It's the simple things in life that make it worth living, or make you want to blow your brains out. Step back. Sleep on it. And if you still can't figure it out... Ask for help. Just Thinkingoutloud

Instead of me spending hard earned cash on a borescope ,I went to aldis and bought a $40 drain cam. it's served me well for five years and I have still to change the battery. It's useless for looking down drains but when i need to check a bore or inside a trans or Diff ,it's perfect. on some really big engines I have seen holes in the liners like that but it was caused by broken rings,creating a localised hot spot,and this inturn creates a steam bubble which would follow the piston up and down,eventually wearing a hole right through the liner.
I knew what the problem was before the sleeves were taken out, the degradation of the liners is because the people who own wet sleeve engines do not know of the issue, if you read the technical manual on your engine it explains it, I am from Australia and I use Prixmax RCP which is a water based coolant with rust inhibiters, it coats the liners from degradation from vibrations when the engine is running especially in the top part of the liner where it fires on each stroke, its used in all heavy machinery, mining equipment or use CAT, John Deere coolant to name a few, under no circumstances buy coolant from auto stores or use plain water.
What youre describing is called cavitation. Microscopic implosions- it removes metal from the area of occurance. The same thing causes pits on a propeller of a boat. The additives in some coolants provides too slick of an area for the cavitation to take hold of the metal and be able pull pieces out.. Electrolosis is a completely different issue that does not cause liners to pit.
I would imagine others have commented too, but that good Sir is definitely cavitation damage, due to piss poor antifreeze. I had a natural gas 855 cummins do that to itself once in less than 5000 hours. Which isn’t very long when they run 24/7/365. Its a very long story, but I got to work directly with Cummins on root cause analysis and the long and the short of it, was the company that packaged that engine into that compressor unit, didn’t follow Cummins specifications and they were using jacket water in the plate exchangers for the screw compressor oil coolers. The engine was being robbed of 85% of its cooling capacity, which in part caused low to negative pressure in the water jackets, which in addition to lack of DCA in the coolant, led to cavities being chewed through the liners. That POS Package made me alot of money in overtime back in the day. Anyway, the lesson being, don’t neglect your cooling system.
Main purpose of glycol coolant additive is to prevent water from freezing and to lubricate water pump. Water carries most of the heat, glycol, being an antioxidant, helps to prevent that water from turning into Mississippi mud inside your engine by electrolysis. Some folks just don't get that fine point. Two different metals in a water bath full of impurities will create battery that will eat it alive over time.

Have had multiple case 90 series and 94s and the 504 is a spectacular engine, great power with good fuel consumption, after running one of these you will wonder we're all the power is in a Deere 466.
NAPA also sells their branded coolant additive. No excuse for liner pitting anymore. I’ve seen liners from 12.7s that had over 1 million miles on them that looked new when they were pulled.
I dont know how you get it all done! I owed my own shop for 15+ years, it was a tough to get anything done by myself. I would of never made it with out the few good employees I had. I really enjoy your videos!

Tweaked Diesel 304 well said. I have several in truck and they essential. I have a big translucent one that becomes a rain shelter' the bigger the better! Have some small ones that become work mats to lie on and a couple of small ones that are kept clean to cover jobs up. I have even used them as a bed on some drawn out big jobs away from civilisation! Mans best friend!

Could also be cavitation erosion on the liners caused by air bubbles in the cooling system, antifreeze helps prevent this from happening but I could also see if the radiator was clogged causing the water pump to have to suck water in it could be drawing air in as well
All you can do is advised them as to what they should do. In my opinion the condition of the cooling system is telling me much about the owners maintenance history. ( Unless he just purchased it) . I always say " why is there never enough time to do it right but always enough time to do it again" never take short cuts on heavy equipment. It always comes back to bite you when you need it the most

Capmans Capmans also very damaging to aircraft structures to the point of falling out of the sky. It is even worse when the aircraft is operated near sea water.
They should use electric equipment to fight fires to help reduce emissions. I guess they have emissions at the power plant and you can only use the equipment for an hour before a 7 hour recharge but I’m sure that would be the way to go
Why on earth would you run any engine without a descent grade of antifreeze, it works both ends of the heat range and saves untold damage throughout the water galleries. Good engine oil, good coolant and daily checks go a hell of a long way to ensuring a usable machine. Don't ya just love half arsed operators.

Wow, all these years around equipment and I never heard of electrolysis causing it. I thought the pitting of liners was just and inherent problem between bad coolant and the vibration in the piston firing. I was taught to always make sure and use coolant treatment to inhibit this, but I'm not much of an engine guy, either. Working on everything else in an equipment dealer environment, you rarely do more than identify the cause of and blown engine and then put in a new one. I think the last time I saw pitted-through liners was close to 20 years ago on a used machine we took in trade....usually customers blow em' by way of a lot of other abuse before that happens.

At least set up a call in schedule with someone so you don't end up trapped under something for a day or two. Most businesses require that if you are working alone. Only good sense.
dont have the dozer any more and utube didnt exist but had over 32000 hr on it when i sold pulled engine out not long after buying it second hand ,should mention i a m a diesel fitter at that time with 20 plus years in field repairs and a rural property owner .remo fan and stand endine on end as you lift it out took me on my own just 7 hours to remove and strip down Garrey
being that close, i think i would have sent the conveter off an had it gone through with all the problems they cause + he going with a rebuild on motor will be quit a strain on converter

IT IS NOT CAVITATION, listen to Warren he knows what he is talking about, Iv'e seen cavitation many times and looks nothing like what has happened to the liners, cavitation is caused by reduced pressure forming air or vapour pockets that collapse and generate an intense shock wave, cooling systems are a positive pressure system so it can't happen to them, if it is going to happen anywhere in a cooling system it will happen at the pump, but unlikely. The young players come to videos like this for education and they are being filled up with the wrong information because of the lesser educated folk and their knee jerk comments.
bulls shit electrolices is caused by gas bubbles imploding between the liners and not a bad earth, if the correct coolant and quantity is maintained it will control this. cat elc is the correct product for this protection.a bad earth would have caused bad starter performance.

On the old Datsun / Nissan PUs. the throttle cable would freeze up from the engine ground strap being left off when the valves were adjusted .
It’s all the crawling around that wears you out after a while.

The phenomenon involved in electrolysis is called the galvanic reaction. Very damaging to boat motors also.
Capmans Capmans also very damaging to aircraft structures to the point of falling out of the sky. It is even worse when the aircraft is operated near sea water.

That looks like cavitation due to a lake of proper coolant. The engine is grounded at the starter.

Do you see O ring problems on deere 466 engines?

No HOAT coolant in there so no protection from cavitation.
