Is Rapunzel ACTUALLY Toxic?

  • Not too long ago now I finished watching Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure. I was recommended it constantly so I finally gave in and boy is it a good’s. If you haven’t watched it, you seriously need to. So since then I’ve dove right into the whole fandom, looking at various opinions and story beats of any characters, and one that continued to perplex me is the sentiment that Rapunzel isn’t a good person/friend etc. Which to me, felt crazy because of how good she is in the movie and fro my recollection in the show, so I wanted to take a closer look and see if that opinion had any real weight to it. Enjoy.

I ALWAYS will praise Rapunzel for how she reacted to learning Cass was Gother's daughter.
It was a pretty mature response. I think other shows dedicate multiple episodes to a character dealing with such a reveal!

I mean for her toxic positivity Can be blamed towards Gothel since she DID kidnap Rapunzel when she was literally an infant and kept her in a tower for over most of her young life. I doubt Gothel taught Rapunzel much about Social skills in order to keep her deception to have Rapunzel fear the Outside world and “Mother knows Best” so anything Rapunzel learned herself about basic human emotions and interactions for most of her childhood came from books and fairy tails. Least till Eugene arrived at her tower and the rest is history…
So Rapunzel couldn’t get real life experience in understanding what other people in interactions for most of her childhood until she was basically a young adult

I was always irritated because Rapunzel was never really irritated by how much Cassandra put Eugene down. He's the most important person to her, but she just says "I wish they wouldn't fight". Eugene has his reasons for getting on her nerves, but if I had a boyfriend whose best friend kept snapping at me I would give him an ultimatum to decide his priorities.

I think its because she is comfertable with Eugene and knows she has his love and friendship but with Cassandra she has to work to be close to because Cassandra keeps everyone at arms length and it was a hard earned honor that Rapunzel finally was able to gain Cassandra as a friend AT ALL, that I think she feels insecure that one little wrong move on her part could push Cassandra away. Cassandra put Rapunzel is such a lousy position when she told her to keep Eugene in the dark about the circumstances surrounding her hair coming back because she wanted to tell him but wanted to honor Cassandra's feelings about it. Eugene was hurt but has been very patient and understanding with Rapunzel because he knows that these interactions and navigating friendships are all very new to her. So he gives her grace and his understanding.
Unfortunately this means he takes it on the chin and I honesty dislike that, and I wish Rapunzel had verbally shut down Cassandra more often when she was insulting him, cause keeping a friend happy shouldn't have involved letting her disrespect the other most important person in her life. True, Eugene can give back to Cassandra as good as he gets to her, but I feel that Rapunzel would be more dissapointed in Eugene and more willing defend Cass if he landed good enough dig. Rapunzel looked realky disappointed in him when when she let him know that Cassandra helped sneak out of the castle and looked psyched that she would get into trouble. EVERYONE gave him dirty looks for his reaction. I get that Rapunzel was shocked by his reaction but I doubt she considered WHY his reaction was to cheer that the prickly, insulting, clearly has a chip on her shoulder toward her boyfriend best friend who makes it known that she disaproves of her former criminal boyfriend may be happy that her negative self, might get in trouble. Eugene made so many allowances so that Rapunzel could have Cassandra as a friend.

Meanwhile Caz doesn’t have this excuse since despite being abandoned by her mother, she was adopted by a loving father and grew up around lots of other people and learnt how to interact with others. The Captain was not the best father. There was an entire episode about that.
I would not say that he actively tried to harm Cassandra, but thanks to his job he probalby was not around as much and he gave Cassandra the feeling that she had to work for him being able to be proud of her (as seen in season 1).
He also is not the nicest person and Cassandra definitely picked up some of his behavior since she looked up to him so much.
Even if Cassandra was not locked up in a tower it still seems the she has lived a pretty isolated live.
Remeber that she did not have any human friends before Rapunzel.
The only person she was kind of close to was her dad...and maybe some of the guards like Stan.

Cassandra is not flawless at all.
Like you said Cass can be pretty rude and violened....and she can also be a bully (mostly towards (former) criminals like Eugene or Lance).
But underneath that behavior there is still a kind, caring and hurting heart, what we can see now and then.
It is also what Rapunzel sees and is the reason why she clings to the hope of Cass returning.
The novel "Rapunzel and the Lost Lagoon", explains better what Rapunzel actually sees in Cassandra. (It takes place before and during Season 1.)
The dairy pages in the show are also worth a closer look.
    Cassandra is like the moonstone.
She only let's people she trusts near her while others get hurt/pushed away.
I also used to view Rapunzel as toxic but nowadays I know it's mostly because the writers wanted to force some events to happen...because when is comes to her behavior it sometimes does feel "out of character" for sure.
Like her not checking on Varian. Even if her dad said he takes care of it, it's still VERY weird that she did not see her friend in need for months.
Her trusting Adira so much more over Cassandra does not feel right, as well.
The beginning of "Rapunzel:Day One" also puts a bad taste in my month, since she seems a bit too angry in my opinion. (Her behavior is this episode is kind of disgusting in general...)
But there are also parts of her character that are "unhealthy" and (at least a bit) harmful to herself and others.
Like the fact that she is "a bit" obsessed with Cassandra during the entire show.
Or that she often acts before she thinks, or that she is a "people pleaser" or that she is not the best in recognizing social cues or the boundaries of other people.
That is of course a result of her living in isolation for so long.
Her trauma effects her just like Cassandra's trauma (and being raised by the Captain of the Guards) effects her behavior.
I would not call her more toxic than Varian or Cassandra...She did not try to hurt people.
When she hurts someone it's not on purpose.
And she definitely never lashed out at someone who has not really any impact on the event she was traumatized by...like those two (and Lady Caine) did to her.
(It was Varian's fault his dad got imprisoned in amber and even if she would have gone with him, there was nothing she could do to prevent it.
It was Gothel who abandoned Cass and Rapunzel was too young to do anything about it.)
Some people also headcanon Rapunzel as being on the autism spectrum.

    • @fruity4820
      @fruity4820 10 дней назад +2

I can definitely see that autism head-cannon with how similar the manifestations of her childhood trauma to typical autistic characteristics, but autism is something that you are mostly born with, it's not the result of child-neglect. The girl didn't socialize with a single child her age her entire childhood, of course she isn't going to get social cues after being in the outside world for only a few months, after her brain is nearly fully developed. with all the stigma around ASD and the misconception that it is the fault of the parents, I don't think this head-cannon is very productive. No hate to anyone who likes this head-cannon, the similarities are there, but there are plenty of reasons people can struggle with socializing other than ASD

I am also not much of a fan of the "Rapunzel is autistic"-headcanon for pretty much the reasons you listed.
But I noticed a lot of people in the fandom who like this idea. Especially if they are on the spectrum as well, since they can relate to her. That's why I wanted to mention it.
Unfortunately we don't know how Rapunzel would have developed in a healthy household.
But I have read some posts which point to Frederic and/or Willow maybe also being on the spectrum.
Plus, the thing with autism in females is that it is often overlooked and women tend to get diagnosed with it much later in live.
But personally, I am more on the side of "it's the result of trauma".
(I am diagnosed with ASD myself, fyi.)

I actually really love the moment in S2, where Rapunzel finally snaps and called Cass out, that Raps, in fact, is a princess, and everyone kinda has to listen to her and do as she says. She has never used this argument before, she allowed people step all over her because of how kind, understanding, and people-pleasing she actually is. All her life for 18 years depended on being on the "good side" of her toxic "mother" - so this is why she felt that she constantly needed to be good for everyone.
And finally, she breaks, she uses her status and high position as an argument.

Well Rapunzel means well but due to her upbringing, She is innocently insensitive due to her upbringing. Like in her treatment towards Cassandra and Varian.
To Cassandra, She regularly revealed secrets, refused to respect Cassandra’s boundaries, stopped listening and eventually pulled the class card.
To Varian. She left him alone for what is implied to be weeks/months while he was being chased and attacked for a crime he hadn’t committed and She judged him more for offenses that she justified when it was someone else who did it.

      @@Passions5555 That and other stuff.
Xavier is the one who made the potion which more or less brainwashed them. Instead of him, Pascal and Maximus being held accountable, Rapunzel’s response was to victim blame by saying they deserved it for arguing.
But Varian was criticized and almost arrested despite 1. him having a better explanation in wanting to save Quirin. 2. using it on people who Threw him into a blizzard that they believed would kill The King and Queen. 3. Being a minor.
Kidnapping? King Frederic was allowed to kidnap The Royal Seal just because another King did a stupid joke that only hurts Frederic’s ego. In comparison when Varian did it, it was AFTER Frederic sent guards after him to keep him silent and he was run out of town for an offense he hadn’t committed.
Also Rapunzel justified her father locking her up by saying that he was trying to keep her safe. Well again. Varian was trying to save his father.
Knowingly Endangering society? Rapunzel justified this by saying a father would do that for his family. Varian? Look his desire to attack and destroy everyone was NOT okay.
But at least Corona attacked him first, which is why he found the Potion in the first place. In Comparison NOBODY did anything to Frederic first.
To anyone who brings up Varian’s reprise, If you look at his exact words, he says “Anyone who stands in my way is going to pay” Which we do see being the case since Corona attacked him first for months before he purposely did anything to them.
We even see Rapunzel’s (and the writers) double standards in her paintings. For Varian, who Chris really thought would be hated/heavily criticized, He was painted in dark colors and looking shady. For Frederic, His painting has a more sad tone since we were supposed to sympathize with him.

2:33 ok, they should’ve played way more into Cass’ hand. Maybe they could of had it slowly killing her and the demon lady could of told her the only way to save herself is taking the moonstone. So yeah, in the series, Cass’ motivation made no sense, and she was completely in the wrong. That being said, just because Cass was way more wrong than Repunzel, that doesn’t excuse how Repunzel treated her much of the time. Like, the few times Cass does something and she’s popular, Repunzel comes and steals the spotlight from her; she never listens to her in the later episodes of season two, and let’s not forget how she totally dismisses Cass’ injury as “she hurt her hand”. Like girl! Your friend just got her whole arm burnt to a literal crisp, and then she’s mad at Cass afterwards for not trusting her?! Girl, your plan was dumb, and you’ve already gotten everyone turned into birds at this point. There was no reason to trust you.
Of course it justifies nothing, but Cass turning on Rapunzel doesn’t justify Rapunzel’s actions either.

That's such a good point honestly. It definitely would have made her seem less infallible and more like a normal person. Because of course she has fears, similarly to varian, one of her worst fears is something that's already happened or almost happened (like Eugene dying and having to live, trapped, with gothel for the rest of her life). Her being frozen with fear would have added so much more and could've even been another point where she avoided communicating her fear, whether the ones of the past or a new fear centered around Cass, it doesn't really matter. But it could have been another point for her to learn how to communicate and show her own weaknesses

One thing I wished from the series was that they addressed and fixed Rapunzels issue.
The biggest one is that to be frank…. For somebody who is all about “following dreams” and “being a good friend”…..
Rapunzel quite frankly is not a good friend and kinda a hypocrite.
We see that in both Varian and Cassandra. With Varian she decides to paint instead of checking up on Varian (she claims she had looked for him but I do not believe her because if she had she would have seen what happened to his village and his father).
With Cassandra Rapunzel showed off her worst tendencies. Like for example in the challange of the brave, had it been me in Rapunzels shoes (feet since she does not wear shoes) I would have never competed, I would have been in the sidelines cheering Cassandra on. I would have actually helped and supported her dream…. Rapunzel never does that even though she knows what Cassandra wants and that she is not happy being a handmaiden. And even worse! I still remember that Episode where Rapunzel got petty and jealous when they found some people who liked Cassandra more than her. I was like “Dude! You are the main character, would it kill you to take a step back and let Cassandra enjoy her moment in the sun for just 10 minutes!”
This among other things made me dislike Rapunzel from the series (I love Rapunzel from the movie though) and even worse because this was never addressed and Rapunzel never learned from it… she did not even say sorry for what she did.
So when Cassandra left I was glad, she certainly will be better off away from Rapunzel.
The point is, while yes others have moments, they all learn and change. Rapunzel on the other hand does not seem to learn or change.

I agree with you about when Rapunzel got jealous. That was uuuuggghhhh! I disagree when it comes to challenge of the brave. At that point she was still fresh out of the tower and just wanted to spend time with Cass, plus she apologized. That being said, I don’t like challenge of the brave because of how good Rapunzel was at it. In the movie she was shown to be good at painting, baking, really anything creative; however, when it came to fighting, she swung her frying pan a few times and tried to run away. She was in her castle for her whole life, how would she learn how to fight? Yet somehow in challenge of the brave, and the whole series really, she is as good if not better at fighting than Cass? Someone who has trained for battle their entire life? Total Mary Sue writing there.

Yeah Rapunzel is annoying as helll but Gothel Jr is no better: she nearly game-ended an entire kingdom for an awful mother who ditched her while kidnapping a newborn baby then proceeded to blame the kidnapped girl for her own secondary character issue. She got off WAY too lightly for all the sh*t she did, hell if they’d done a Land Before Time (Stone of Cold Fire) and banished her until “five of the cold times had passed” it would have been something. But also we never saw how the Captain, her *adopted father* reacted to her betrayal, even if she hated Rapunzel for all that happened he did no wrong to her, hell he could have tossed her ass in an orphanage and been done with her, but no he saw she was alone so he adopted and raised her. If Rapunzel sucks then Gothel Jr is a thousand times worse!

The answer is yes and no this video points out everything but I would say she isn’t as toxic as sometimes being a leader and having such a large responsibility comes with very tough choices and decisions. (I’m not entirely defending her but this is just another point)
(Also to add on sometimes you have no choice into making 1 tough decision even if Rapunzel wanted to help Varian she had no choice but to stay behind and help her kingdom I imagine she would’ve done it in a heartbeat if she had the choice)

I got the impression that a lot of season 1 was her learning the social skills that she sorely missed growing up.
In the challenge of the brave thing... wasn't a lot of that because Cass wasn't straight with her about her reason? Like he said, they're not great communicators. Cass isn't especially forthcoming and Rapunzel does forget to ask or at least sometimes fails to consider what the other wants or even needs.
That's sort of what caused a lot of problems.
And I do think to Rapunzel's credit, she does try to be accountable and take responsibility for things when she messes up. She has flaws but she doesn't try and cover them up and say she did nothing wrong.
I'm fairly certain she and Cass had a talk about what happened in the tree thing as well with Cass's arm. It obviously didn't smooth it over completely but it was at least a step towards potential healing.

I find it also fascinating that if Rapunzel was a real person she would most likely be a "feral child" and not be able to function in society without help, since her development would be stuck on the leve of a child forever.
And show Rapunzel does often behave like a child with her naivity, impulsivity and her not knowing how the world and other people work. Especially in season 1.
I also think it was pretty irresponsable of her parents to let her be queen for a day, even though durining that time she did not have that much expericene being outside. She was not even outside the tower for a year.
Sure, she can protect herself but running a Kingdom and caring for other people is an entirely different thing.

you are correct about Cass not being an angel, and everybody being somewhat flawed. But consider this: multiple characters, even Rapunzel, call Cass out on her mistakes/bullying, while for Rapunzel, even if someone disagrees, the story more often than not contorts itself to show she was right all along. The sunshine-grumpy dynamic is one of my favourites ever, but for it to work, both have to work and came to understand each other, but here I am under the impression that it didn't really happen. Rapunzel's BS was a huge reason for Cass' betrayal, and after that, the story contorted itself in a million ways to keep Cass evil and Rapunzel super-sunshine, and rushing everything in the finale. Cass was always shown to be cynical, but it wasn't as stupid, cruel and as oblivious as she is in the last season. I can see her frustration culminate to the point of betraying Rapunzel/doing something stupid or wrong, but for her be so much mislead and under Zanthir's thumb seems illogical and not satisfying to me. I can see other people thinking differently, tho.

    • @kristenkortright2921
      @kristenkortright2921 15 дней назад +9

This. Cass may have been cynical, but it was because she was logical, not stupid. It was out of character for her to do what she did in the last season. I can see her betraying Rapunzel, but not to follow Zhan Tiri or overthrow the kingdom. She didn’t want to rule a kingdom. She just wanted the freedom to live her own life. People forget that although Rapunzel considered Cass a friend, she was still a servant and didn’t have the freedom Rapunzel had to live her own dreams. Running away (because Rapunzel was literally putting her in danger by not trusting her throughout Season 2) and maybe taking the moonstone in the process would’ve made more sense.

  • @kristenkortright2921
    @kristenkortright2921 15 дней назад +13

I see your point, and this opinion may be pretty unpopular in these comments, but leading up to Season 3, Cassandra was a good and loyal friend who was very under appreciated by Rapunzel. Cassandra sacrificed a lot to make Rapunzel happy and keep her safe, giving up her dream of being a warrior because Rapunzel guilted her into being her lady in waiting. Rapunzel and the others seemed to dismiss Cass’ feelings a lot of the time, which was honestly not their fault, since Cass had trouble opening up, but I can relate to her frustration. Then in Season 2, Rapunzel started acting like she knew everything and told Cass she didn’t need her help. But Cass’ job on the mission was literally to protect the group, so Rapunzel should have taken her advice into account. And with regard to Rapunzel destroying Cass’ hand by accident, I’m not saying Rapunzel was necessarily in the wrong, but Cassandra definitely didn’t do anything wrong. She saved Rapunzel’s life, and all she got from Rapunzel was Rapunzel saying she should have listened to her (Even though Rapunzel would have died, and then what were they supposed to do?). And then there’s Season 3, which in my opinion was just bad writing. Cass focusing on Gothel as the reason for betraying Rapunzel made no sense when there were lots of other less ridiculous reasons why their friendship fell apart in Season 2. And then whenever Rapunzel tried to reason with Cass and got Cass to open up about her problems, Rapunzel would dismiss every complaint Cass had (some of which were legitimate) and say that everything was fine because Rapunzel had always been a “great friend.” Sorry for the essay, lol, but I wanted to express my opinion as a Cass fan, and I hope you can see where we’re coming from. I don’t dislike Rapunzel, but I do think Cass was treated badly in ways that Rapunzel just didn’t realize, and focusing on Gothel in Season 3 was a mistake and just made Cass look crazy.

    • @christiantwist3360
      @christiantwist3360 15 дней назад +6

Yeah, season 3 was a mess. They should of focused on Cass’ arm being the reason she turned. Cass is a warrior, after all, losing her arm would be devastating, if they actually let her lose it, that is. Or they could of had the char start spreading, slowly killing Cass. Zantiri (however you spell her freaking name) could of then told Cass, then that the only way to save her would be to get the moonstone. Cass is shown to be a pretty grounded character, so I feel like it would take something big (like the possibility of dying) to get her to betray the group.
Gothel was a poor motivation for Cass to betray Rapunzel. That being said, if you went down the road of Cass grabbing the moonstone to protect Rapunzel, then Gothel would of worked. For example, Zan Tiri could of shown Cass how Gothel was her mother, and make her feel guilty that she was spared from a life with Gothel, while Rapunzel had to suffer. She could then tell Cass that if Rapunzel took the moonstone, she would die. Cass would then be motivated to take the moonstone first, trying to spare Rapunzel from getting hurt, believing it’s her burden to bare after what her mother did to her.

I got so annoyed with Rapunzel so quickly in this show. Only because she never showed a whole lot of loyalty. She always seemed really flaky in a way. And wishy washy about who’s side she was on. Walking on egg shells trying not to hurt anyone’s feelings. And ultimately hurting the man she loves. It was very irritating to watch. To the point that I decided this is NOT the same Rapunzel from the movie. And don’t even get me started on Cassandra’s overall unpleasantness to people who aren’t Rapunzel. Rapunzel ends up as someone who doesn’t call their friend out for being mean to others. Especially Eugene. All because “well she’s nice to me” 😩 Yeah, not my Rapunzel. She knows full well what a deep insult can do. And the fact that she let Cassandra do that to Eugene all the time made her really unlikable. Not the same Rapunzel as the movie that’s for sure.

She simply doesn't properly understand boundaries or that her way isn't necessarily the right way. I mean, she spent close to 2 decades in an isolated location with her only friend being a chameleon, of course she's going to come off as pushy and insensitive at times.
That said, her positive outlook does lean into toxic positivity, but I feel it's part of an unhealthy coping mechanism rather than her being a bad character.

I think Cass is only a bully in season 3. I won’t deny that she does know how to get under peoples skin. She is also Brutally honest to an extreme amount. But she only really uses those traits in season 1,2 to test people not intentionally harm them. Throughout seasons 1,2 there are people like Lance, Eugene and Adira who she does not trust. She is mean to Eugene because she did not see his genuine change into a better person. But the moment Eugene shows he is willing to do good in the world she stops making fun of him for a certain amount of time. I think over time with Eugene they become siblings to each other and poking at each other just becomes part of their dynamic. I am not justifying cass’s treatment of Eugene. I am only trying to see it from her perspective.

Bully may not be the best word for how she was in seasons 1 and 2, maybe petty with a dash of self-righteous? Even beyond the point of Eugene proving himself that he is genuinely in love with Rapunzel and a changed man for not only Rapunzel's sake but his own, I still found Cassandra to be needlessly insulting toward him. She tolerated him at best, and when she became a bad guy and became antagonistic toward Rapunzel, she dropped all pretenses and really let her dislike and contempt for Eugene and Lance come right out. She really made a go at Eugene to hurt him in particular while in season 3. In season 2, she was pretty smug toward Rapunzel when everyone in Vardarous liked her goodwill festival events better than hers and rubbed Rapunzel's face in it. (Not excusing Rapunzel's poor attitude in that episode. She was just as bad as Cassandra with her petty competitiveness in that episode, but still). It just seemed light when ever Cassandra had an edge over someone she was petty AF about it. Which kicked up when she suddenly had magic powers in season 3.

I love Rapunzel. She's honestly my third favorite Disney Princess. I think the series did fine with Rapunzel for the most part, but there are times that she doesn't feel...well, the character we know from the movie. I get there is going to be some differences. And I know how Gothel raised her is probably why she tends to be naive and everything. But if she is able to take on Gothel, then she should show more of her assertive side. And we don't really...get that. It's why I ended up falling out of the series. I lost interest. Though I have seen people say the reason Rapunzel acts the way she does is because of how Gothel raised her. And honestly, that is a good point.
And I have some issues with the series. For one, I think the relationship between Rapunzel and Eugene got...downsided. It honestly made me not ship them all that much anymore. They were cute in the movie and I thought they would get deeper into it. But they don't. At least not to me. It felt like them getting married was more of an afterthought, especially when Rapunzel kept turning Eugene down before she finally said yes. And not going to lie, it didn't make me want to keep rooting for them. Rapunzel actually felt like she was trapped from not only marrying Eugene, but also having to stay in the castle. She always struck me as someone who wants adventure and to get out there. I have written fanfiction where she is not stuck at the castle and is with someone I actually ship her a lot more than with Eugene. And it helped me explore more of her character.
As for the other issue, I am not a fan of Cass as a whole. She started out all right, but as time went on, I get super annoyed with how she acted towards Rapunzel. I understand they are very different but it felt so off putting. And it's mostly because it was going to be revealed down the line that oh no, spoiler alert, Cass was Gothel's real daughter. Which makes NO sense. Like how the hell did Gothel, being an old woman, was able to have a child at all? And I feel the flower made her immortal but I doubt it was able to have her conceive a child. It would have made more sense of Cass was a distant relative of Gothel. But whatever. I think the series at the end started to fall apart. I get people not liking Rapunzel but I do think it's unfair to have everything blamed on her when Cass I feel is the worst character ever.
But that's my own personal take.

Okay, but in the first example - with Cassandra and the competition - she arguably learnt her lesson. We call way too many things "toxic". That example was more so character growth, I think. But... unfortunately, she then keeps falling into that trap.
I will say, I didn't care as much for Flynn in the series as I did in the movie either. And personally, I'm not seeing why you keep excusing the moments when Rapunzel pushed people into acting out as her being "out of character" when you acknowledge she has all these flaws (which are very much a part of her character) that can result in people turning on her.
Also, you could say that, maybe, having realised how S1's consequences for her ignoring Varian for the sake of cooking and baking with friends and letting him out into a snowstorm while offering everyone else in the kingdom a place away from the snowstorm and ignoring his need to save his father -- admittedly from his own screw up BUT it wouldn't have happened if the kingdom DID SOMETHING - anything - in response to the issue with the magical rocks that kept popping out of nowhere. Maybe Rapunzel felt guilty of how things went down with Varian and so she wound up overcompensating for that by overlooking everything Cass - who was much older than Varian who was still a kid at the time of his treachery - did, in hopes of saving her friend and ultimately potentially avoiding something worse. (What that worse would have been, idk, and hell, it might not have had come to pass, but even so...)
(Also, saying "it's Varian's fault that his dad got trapped in amber" ignores that his father barged in on something that he shouldn't have, Varian was the only one DOING something to try and resolve the problem while his father stubbornly avoided doing anything, and despite knowing of the issue, no one else did anything until much later... there are several factors at play that affected Varian's choice. If Rapunzel's actions and words were affected by her upbringing, then there were things that affected the other characters too - and there were -, and those should be acknowledged... which a lot of comments seem to conveniently forget.)
Cassandra doesn't specifically say "I don't need anyone anymore", it was more Cassandra pushing people away to avoid getting hurt herself. Which is a little different. The former is more arrogant than the latter, and while she does have moments of arrogance, that's not really how Cassandra's split from the group went down or why it did.
Also, while I still *mostly* like Rapunzel, my main gripe was with the S1 Rapunzel. I already cared more for Varian than the rest of the cast in the next couple seasons, so... how her arc went I admittedly didn't care as much. I still liked her well enough at times, but wasn't as much of a fan as in the movie. Some people will bend over backwards to defend Rapunzel's inactions because "the kingdom", but then fail to criticise anyone who failed to act when "the kingdom" was slowly coming under threat, long before the snowstorm and even afterwards. It's easy to criticise what people already acknowledge: I don't really see people completely excusing Cassandra or Varian. I'm glad we're in an era where we criticise the hero just a little more. (Although, this really *should* extend to male heroes too, which don't get half as much flack, imo.)

This is just a minor nitpick of mine, but there’s also a lot of times when Rapunzel is more skilled at fighting than Cassandra and Eugene, which really makes no sense. Yes, she has a frying pan, and incredibly durable hair. But she has little to no training when it comes to martial arts, or fighting in general. Like in Season 1, Episode 4, she somehow beats Cassandra in nearly every skill. Even being able to fight her head on towards the end, despite not actually knowing how to fight. And keep in mind that Cassandra’s been training to be a royal guard since she was six, it was just grossly out of character, and I cringe everytime I watch that episode because she’s doing all these fancy acrobatic moves that she really shouldn’t know how to do. Even in Great Expotations, she feels inspired to invent something after seeing all the other inventions. I find it strange how she not only manages to create something entirely new despite only trying for one day, and her machine ended up conveniently being the thing that they needed to stop Varian’s machine from causing chaos at the fair. At least in the first episode Rapunzel had motive to be involved, because she wanted to do something with Cassandra, but even then, there’s so many episodes where she gets involved in business that really doesn’t concern her. It just feels like the writers want her in the spotlight even if it doesn’t make sense for that episode. I mean, she’s the main character, for gods sake. You don’t need her in every single episode. In Great Expotations especially, she didn’t really serve a role at all except to stop the machine from going haywire, she and Eugene could’ve easily been cut out from this episode and it wouldn’t change a throng.

Zhan Tiri never forced her to do anything. I am annoyed that some of Cassandra's nastier behavior was excused by the narrative by making Zhan Tiri a big fat scapegoat to absolve Cassandra.

She is also the worst and most toxic girlfriend ever to Flynn! She always lets Cassandra or anyone else always insult him while just standing there without saying a word, keeps secrets from him, draws his face on a punching bag just for Cassandra and never even apologizes for it, travels back in time to fix his personality, ignores him on the day of hearts and rejects his proposals several times even though in the movie she wanted to give up everything just to save him at the end, are you kidding me? This seems so out of character for her! And this whole rejecting marriage plotline is just a sign that they don't fit together and such a relationship could never work in real life and we shouldn't teach kids that it could, then little girls will just expect to much and end up in a divorce later in life! This just couldn't work! No self respecting man would put up with being rejected twice or would wait years to be able to truly be together with a girl if he really wants to marry her. And it just couldn't work if one person wants to get married and the other doesn't because then one person would always have to give in and in the series Flynn always has to give in, Rapunzel never does. And this just isn't fair or healthy! What about his feelings and his wishes? Why do only her feelings and wishes matter? In a healthy love relationship, both opinions should matter! And if they have such different opinions and life goals, then it just couldn't work! And then it would be time to break up! And no man would put up with this in real life unless he is a simp but Flynn wasn't one in the movie and according to his backstory he was an egoistical jerk before he met her, so it would make no sense that he could change from an egoistical player into a simp in such a short time and it's not good that Disney is sending little girls such a message. It's no wonder that so many relationships nowadays don't work out and end in a divorce or a break up if we are teaching women that they should expect that men would always give in and ignore their own wishes and opinions while the women never give them anything in return and instead act like they don't really care about them, put their female best friends always above them, just stand there while they are bullied constantly and reject their proposals several times! And it's so unfair because if the roles were reversed everyone would agree that this is toxic but if a guy is treated like that it's ok. That's such a double standard. And Rapunzel having trauma is no excuse, because he also has trauma. He grew up alone and unloved in an orphanage and on the streets and he always treats her right. This is just unfair and toxic and it angers me that people call this the healthiest relationship in Disney when it's actually toxic and when there are other Disney couples who are very healthy but are always forgotten like Tarzan and Jane or Robin Hood and maid Marian.
And people shouldn't criticize the other princess couples for marrying so early when that is just how things worked back then when the stories are set. If anything they should criticize them for getting together so fast because back then people got engaged quickly after falling in love and there is nothing wrong with being engaged, you could be engaged for months or a year before marrying and they should have just done that with Rapunzel and Flynn. And he didn't even propose after a few days but after a few months, and for this time period that's an equivalent for a few years in our time, so it was the right time and she should have said yes. And the way this scene is framed, it looks like she wanted to say yes but then thought about how her life would be then and if that seems so horrible to her then she shouldn't be with him anymore! Flynn deserves better, he deserves someone who accepts his proposal the first time and who doesn't subconsciously consider marriage to be a trap. Whoever considers marriage to be a prison shouldn't even have a relationship! And two people who have such different wishes and goals just don't fit together and this could never work! And why is marrying framed to be bad even when it's after they know each other for months but sacrificing yourself for the other even when you have only known each other for a few days framed to be alright? If you want such a modern relationship with such problems, then don't bring in a scene in the movie when both are literally willing to give up their lives for each other after having known each other just for such a short time! And if you want to show such a romantic and touching scene where two characters want to give up anything for each other because they love each other so much, then don't ruin it later with such nonsense where she literally rejects promising to stay together with him and only to love him! It seems so ridiculous that they say she wouldn't give up her freedom for him, when she was literally willing to do that for all eternity for him in the movie! It just makes no sense! It makes that whole scene of the movie unbelievable! And why does marrying him even mean she has to give up her freedom??? It only means that if you secretly want to break up or cheat! It's just a promise to only love each other and to not break up anymore! And if she truly loved him, she would want that and not see it as having to give up her freedom! And it's just not healthy that only he wants that and this just wouldn't work and he's always treated so badly and not allowed to have a different opinion! When he has another opinion than her just once, then she travels back in time to fix his personality and people are seriously calling this healthy??? I know that wasn't her intention but she seemed to be perfectly ok with it at the end and acted like it's right that his opinion was altered against his will even though he was right at first! Flynn deserves so much better! It's also cruel that they changed his personality so much and made him so stupid! I refuse to believe the Flynn in the movie and the one in the series are the same character!
It's just so cruel what they did to him just because of modern feminism and because Frozen made more money! But in my opinion they completely destroyed Flynn and their relationship and i wish they never made this stupid series in the first place! The story was over, there was nothing more to tell and they just ruined the beautiful love story of the movie for me and above all sent horrible messages like marrying means giving up your freedom or that a man's opinion shouldn't matter and that he should always have to change his opinions and wishes for his girl while the girl never has to make any compromises and always gets anything she wants and is worshiped all the time by her man while she never gives him anything in return and ignores his feelings and needs because they apparently don't matter! It's just not fair! And I will never forgive them all of that and never stop hating this series and I can only still enjoy the movie if I count this as not canon!

... I think you missed a pretty important line in the original movie if you think it's the series that came up with the idea of Eugene having a few failed proposals before Raps accepted. From narrator Eugene in the closing scene, quote, "And after years and years of asking and asking and asking... I finally said yes. (Rapunzel: Eugene...) Alright, I asked her." The series, in tackling the time between the movie and Ever After, was already tasked from the sorce material with figuring out why Rapunzel wouldn't have said yes to the innitial proposal, and I feel it necessary to be said: Rapunzel only turned down Eugene's FIRST proposal due to her own hesitations. And frankly, I think that was entirely fair on her part; she was already loaded with pressure from the upcoming corination and the feeling of being trapped by her father sending a battalion with her into town and, of course, Eugene's speech playing up that idea of her being kept in this castle, hardly better than a tower, for the rest of her life without ever seeing the world beyond it, thus also calling her trauma from her childhood into play.
I belive Eugene proposes, or attempts to propose, only four times throughout the series, and presents Rapunzel with five rings total (there was the one in The Return of Strongbow which was not part of a proposal). The first in BEA where, of course, she has a panic attack and turns him down. Fair enough. The next proposal is in Beyond Corona's walls, which she does not turn down, but rather overhears Eugene talking to himself about it and stumbles in on him practicing, thus leading to them both being awkward about it in part because Lance was right; Rapunzel just got out into the world beyond Corona, she's finally completely free, and might be hesitant to be tied down by something as important as an engagement, even if it were to someone she loves. The other part is simply because it didn't go to plan, and Eugene tried to pretent it never happened immediately after the event, potentially leading Rapunzel to believe he, himself, was having second thoughts about proposing. By the end of the two episodes, she's ready to say yes, but backtracks when he stops her and says she can give her answer later. The third time, he literally doesn't even get the chance to actually propose because Cassandra's Revenge happens, and anyway Rapunzel was planning to propose to him at the same time. They just put it off because they both realized it was maybe a bad time to start planning a wedding when they had other things to focus on, like protecting the kingdom. Finally, you have the end of the finale, where all goes well and she accepts his proposal with great joy.
I see nothing wrong with them remaining unengaged for several years, especially considering how naive to the world Rapunzel is during and right after the movie. I think it was the right move for Eugene to have waited until six months after not in the least because Rapunzel probably didn't know much about what marriage even was, especially considering even six months later, she didn't recognize the gesture of Eugene getting down on one knee as the start of a proposal. She needed time not just to adjust to a new life and get to know Eugene better, but to learn the various social roles she might be expected to fulfill and what those would mean, including the roles of "fiance" and "wife".
Mind you, I don't think they handled Rapunzel, Eugene, or their relationship perfectly in the series; I think there are quite a few flaws in the series as a whole, but personally, I think the various attempts and failures at proposal are neither a sign that a couple is destined to fail nor a great failure by the show. Frankly, the proposal plotline is one of those I believe was better handled, with the exception of their utter lack of communication or Rapunzel's ability to figure out something fishy was going on in Beyond Corona's Walls. While it may be the case that some couples are ready to be engaged after only a few months, other couples may need a few years, if they ever choose to get married at all. I think it's perfectly fine to portray a situation in which a couple did take several years and only went through with an engagement when they were both finally ready for it, and while I wish the show writing overall was a bit better, I appreciate that Tangled (the movie alone, even) chose to portray that kind of relationship.

I just hope that in the movie of Shrek 5, once Disney buys DreamWorks, all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses appear, especially the most important character in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, with her best friends Zephyr, Tip, Dash, Kiera and Catalina, and besides, they will be the new main characters of the movie of Shrek 5 so that they help Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Dulcinea, The Three Diablos, Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and The Others to defeat Rumpelstiltskin, Death, Drizella Tremaine, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, as Queen Grimhilde, Lady Tremaine, Captain Hook, Hades, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, Marina del Rey, Ursula, Gaston LeGume, Jafar, John Ratcliffe, Shan Yu, Yzma, Dr. Facilier, Zhan Tiri, Judge Claude Frollo, Mother Gothel, Tamatoa, Drago Bludvist, Grimmel The Grisly, Mor'du, King Runeard, Prince Hans, Pitch Black, Dr. Zara, Queen Nerissa, King Magnifico, Rapunzel (Shrek) and Morgana, and to prevent Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks from ruling and destroying all The Multiverse Forever, especially The Kingdom of Far Far Away, Shrek along with his wife named Princess Fiona will need help from their new friends which are all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses, as Prince Florian, Princess Snow White, Prince Charming, Princess Cinderella, The Baker, Anastasia Tremaine, Prince Philip, Princess Aurora, Prince Eric, Princess Ariel, Prince Adam, Princess Belle, Prince Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, Prince John Smith, Princess Pocahontas, Prince Li Shang, Princess Fa Mulan, Prince Naveen, Princess Tiana, Prince Flynn Rider, Princess Rapunzel, Varian, Cassandra, Maui, Queen Moana Waialiki, Hiccup Haddock, Princess Merida, Kristoff Bjorgman, Queen Anna, Jack Frost, Princess Elsa, Miguel Rivera, Princess Raya, Walter Beckett, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Jin, Yi, Connor, Ruby Gillman, Starboy, Princess Asha, Mateo, Queen Elena, Prince Desmond, Princess Amber, Prince James, Princess Isabel, Prince Hugo, Princess Sofia, Namaari, The Futuristic Four, The Other Six Princesses of The Kingdom of Atlantica and Melody, but actually, Melody is The First and Only that she is not a True Official Disney Princess, because Melody made her debut in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea and it is also because she is The First and Only Daughter of an Official Disney Princess, but Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Dulcinea, The Three Diablos, Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and The Others also need Melody's help to protect and save all The Multiverse, especially Their Kingdom of Far Far Away away from Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, because Melody is The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, but also The Death of Queen Lillian, because since her husband named King Harold passed away in the movie of Shrek 3, she has felt heartbroken and that caused her own death in her Kingdom of Far Far Away, and all The Inhabitants of The Kingdom of Far Far Away are saddened by The Death of Queen Lillian, because now she is with her husband named King Harold in heaven, and now they have lost their queen, that means now The Kingdom of Far Far Away needs a new queen and King Artie said that his love interest, girlfriend, fiancée and former classmate from Worcestershire school called Princess Guinevere would be the one to be The New Queen of Far Far Away, so King Artie decided to return to his old school called Worcestershire along with Shrek, with his older cousin Princess Fiona, with Donkey, with Dragon, with Puss in Boots, with Kitty Softpaws, with Perrito, with Dulcinea, with The Three Diablos, with Goldilocks, with The Three Bears, with The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, with The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and with the Others to meet again with their friends from their school who are actually Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany and his love interest, girlfriend and fiancée Princess Guinevere to take them back to his Kingdom of Far Far Away, and also The Romance of all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses, especially The Romance of Maui and Queen Moana Waialiki, The Romance of Hiccup Haddock and Princess Merida, The Romance of Jack Frost and Princess Elsa, The Romance of Varian and Cassandra, The Romance of Starboy and Princess Asha, The Romance of Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany and The Romance of King Artie and Princess Guinevere, because I think that Maui will be Queen Moana Waialiki's love interest, boyfriend and fiancé, while Hiccup Haddock will be Princess Merida's love interest and boyfriend, Princess Tiffany will be Prince Lancelot's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée and Princess Guinevere will be King Artie's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée, because Queen Moana Waialiki is going to fall in love with Maui, Princess Merida is going to fall in love Hiccup Haddock, Princess Tiffany is going to fall in love with Prince Lancelot and Princess Guinevere is going to fall in love with King Artie, but they don't know how to tell them their feelings towards them and neither how to win their hearts, because every time Queen Moana Waialiki gets too close to Maui when it comes to true love, she gets very nervous with him, while which in the case of Princess Merida is also the same, because whenever Princess Merida gets too close to Hiccup Haddock when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous with him, in the case of Princess Tiffany it is also the same, because whenever Princess Tiffany gets too close to Prince Lancelot when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, and in the case of Princess Guinevere too, because every time Princess Guinevere gets too close to King Artie when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, but luckily for them, Princess Fiona will help Queen Moana Waialiki to win The Heart of Maui, also Princess Merida to win The Heart of Hiccup Haddock, also Princess Tiffany to win The Heart of Prince Lancelot and also Princess Guinevere to win The Heart of King Artie, and I also want that Jack Frost will be Princess Elsa's love interest and boyfriend and Varian will be Cassandra's love interest and boyfriend, because Jack Frost leaves fall in love with Princess Elsa, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Jack Frost gets too close to Princess Elsa when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, because Varian leaves fall in love with Cassandra, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Varian gets too close to Cassandra when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, but fortunately for they, Shrek will help Jack Frost to win The Heart of Princess Elsa and also Varian to win The Heart of Cassandra, except Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, because she doesn't need a love interest, but also The Rivalry of King Artie and Queen Anna because they both want to compete in a challenge to see who is The Best Ruler of a Kingdom, because both want to do what is best for Their Own Kingdom, because King Artie wants to do the best for his Kingdom of Far Far Away because now he is The New King of Far Far Away and Queen Anna wants to do the best for her Kingdom of Arendelle because now she is The New Queen of Arendelle, but at the end, King Artie and Queen Anna become best friends in the world, because at the end, they both learned from their mistakes that they have made since their challenge to compete to see who is the best ruler of a Kingdom, and that at the end, King Artie and Princess Guinevere see their first true love kiss and that they become a romantic couple, just like Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany, and also that at the end of the movie of Shrek 5, Shrek becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princes and Maui, Hiccup Haddock, Kristoff Bjorgman, Jack Frost, Varian, Jin, Connor, The Baker, Starboy, Mateo, Prince Desmond, Prince James, Prince Hugo, Prince Princess Tiffany and Princess Guinevere become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princesses and that one day, Princess Tiffany will be The Wife of Prince Lancelot and that they have a family in the future, and that also Princess Guinevere is The Wife of King Artie, that they also have a family and that she becomes The New Queen of Far Far Away in The Future.

No. No. Stop making excuses for Rapunzel. Yes, Rapunzel was raised by a narcissist, but Rapunzel’s actions are 100% her own and must be held accountable for them. Rapunzel is the most toxic person in the series! The series’ two main villians wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for her! She destroyed Varian’s life and left him and Quirin for dead.
She refused to let Cassandra go and achieve her dreams despite being in a position to do so. Remember her reaction when she found out that Cassandra wanted to join the warriors of Ingvarr?
Now, had these traits been presented to us with the intention to have Rapunzel grow and learn from them, I would have loved it. But no. Rapunzel does not learn from her mistakes, nor learns how to be a better friend by the end of the series.
The show manipulates us into believing that Rapunzel is the embodiment of all things good, and anybody who opposes her is wrong and evil. Do not let yourself be fooled.

I wouldn’t say that Rapunzel is ‘toxic’ but I think a better way to put her behavior as is a lack of socialization experience, Rapunzel never really had time to interact nor understand the difference in other people’s feelings or set of mind because she was raised by a narcissistic psychopath who probably never cared to teach her basic sense when it comes to other people because the only thing they wanted with her was her hair. She only had about 3 years of social interactions with other people (counting season 1-3 +the movie) and as a young adult it would be hard for her to understand things like that, I think Rapunzel needs to work on her people skills but other than that shes at least being mature about most of her problems like that issue with Cass in season 3. She’s still building her personality so that’s the reason why she was acting different from the movie into the show.

Maybe not later in the series, but kind of in the first season. She’s always framed as right even when she oversteps boundaries and does annoying things while the people bei by angry with her are framed as wrong. Not to mention everyone except Monty loves her. And Monty’s hate for her is completely irrelevant to the plot of the story. She’s supposedly good at everything even stuff she’s tried for the first time. The only thing she couldn’t do was be a Green for a day. But she’s good at everything else. Like remember this episode where class trained so hard for the competition? Well she just decides to enter and she wins. Like what? Another time is the invention episode. The only time she faces consequences is when Varian turns evil, and even then she’s still framed as being right. So yeah first season Rapunzel kinda annoyed me. It does get better later in the show though.

I love repunzel I’ve said many times that she’s my favorite princess but she has made 2 big mistakes throughout the series one of the big mistakes she has made is literally betraying varien in season one I mean even though it might be out of character still it’s a mistake she made I mean again during the storm I get it she was queen she couldn’t do anything but afterwards she should’ve done something if she went and helped maybe varien wouldn’t have snapped and her second big mistake is constantly believing cass would come back to the good side in season 3 I mean I get it if she missed her but her believing cass might come back to the good side is just so annoying and it makes her way more naïve then she already is especially since the whole reason cass turned to villain is over a stupid reason that I don’t want to get into mixed in with what happened throughout season 2 and even though cass won’t budge repunzel still won’t give up and I’m thinking where was that when varien turned to villain I mean she reached out and tried to get him to stop once and that was when she found out he wasn’t a good person anymore and I mean seriously and then she let her dad lock him in prison for a year and who knows if repunzels dad even got varien the help he needs during that one year I mean it just doesn’t make sense but anyways overall I love repunzel she will forever be my favorite princess and I love the series I just think that repunzel should listen to her friends before they snap and go full villain on her❤

It's just a trend with every popular shiws nowadays to be extrelely harsh/hate MC. Most people tend to overexagerrate the few flaws they have yet forgive/support more flawed characters the moment they show 1 positive trait.
Quite ironic that it mostly happens with shows that have female MC

Rapanzul is toxic! (Always trying to help)
Cass is not! (Immediately starts hurting bystanders and strangers)
Hmmm....🤔 so... to not be toxic... I just got to hurt LOTS of people!😈😈😈😈😈

The thing with "always wanting to help" is, you should only help people who actually want help.
Forcing help on people is toxic behavior.
Also people who tend to always wanting to help others often ignore their own needs and are at risk of codependency.
Of course that is not healthy as well.

Ok I’ll back track on my comment that she refused
However she sure dragged her feet and did the bare minimum when it came to helping the people of old corona. Like she knew about the rock problem since the science fair episode but she doesn’t actually do something about it for about half a year, and she only really does something because it’s becoming an inconvenience for her because she can’t sleep. varian asked for her help like four times and every time she forgets because she either runs away from the problem or completely forgets
Also let’s not forget she was about to go against her promise and completely abandon the people of crona all because she didn’t want to go against her tyrant father Varian literally had to beg her to keep her promise
And to make matters worse she actually had the audacity to accuse him of not caring about crona
like girl just fall off your high horse like twenty minutes ago you were just about to back on your promise because you were being selfish

Is it just me or is Charlie just more bearable than Rapunzel though?? 😭 Not a HH diehard fan, just someone who got dragged into watching the show, but while Charlie should had given Mary Sue energy and annoyed me to high heaven like Raps, she surprisingly didn't.
I think it's moreso the writing, like whenever she interferes and the consequences are dire (ex. Angel and Val), she gets RIGHTFULLY called out, apologises, and learns from it.
Could be because I hadn't watched TTS in YEARS, the most I remember Raps apologising (SINCERELY) was when she accidentally took Cass' spotlight during the Games episode, and that was EARLY in the show. Girl was eventually coddled by the writing and plotlines because she can 'do no wrong' and 'she's traumatised, she DOESN'T need to grow as a person in a COMING OF AGE story' 🙄

I just thought the last arc was the weakest and least enjoyable, but I never thought about who was toxic or not, none of them struck me as that. They were flawed but idk at least their character writing wasn't so bland then

Rapunzel and Charlie Morningstar are the same characters but in different universes. They are both optimistic and naive, and flaws that makes them relatable and not just one note. They get pissed off when their limit is off, which is normal. They both need guidance on their view of the world they are born in. People sometimes write these characters off before it gets understood. All we had was the movie to get to know Rapunzel, and now the series lets us explore new things about her.

Rapunzel has flaws and it comes off as trauma. I didn’t care about Rapunzel in the movie, she just seemed like another standard Disney princess. Seeing her on the show was great though because it shows how all that abuse affected her. And Cass is a similar story.
