It made no sense that after the blizzard, Rapunzel didn’t even bother to check if Varian was alive after being thrown out into it. Instead, she took a painting class to distract her because she was feeling guilty.
Y'know what's even weirder? Pascal went missing for a day in the episode "Pascal's Story" and Rapunzel drops everything to find him. And yet,she considered Varian as a friend but didn't bother to look for him for weeks,if not months on end even though she knew where his house was.
Well, she was only taking that painting class because her dad gave her a mural to paint on the museum (?). So I always assumed she was being distracted from thinking about it. Besides, _everyone_ around her is talking about how dangerous Varian is and she should keep her distance, I think she let herself be influenced by that, maybe? She was already doubting her ideals after Queen For A Day.
@@starburroware you seriously justifying neglecting a child for months!? And the writing is manipulative!!! Varian didn’t do ANYTHING villainous until SOTS! People need to stop allow the manipulative writing to do the thinking for them because Chris Sonnenburg wants everybody to take what he wrote at face value even though it’s bs. Also, “distracting” isn’t an excuse. Her feeling bad and her issues shouldn’t be more important than a literal life and that’s exactly how this stupid narrative brainwashes people into believing. Rapunzel’s issues aren’t more important than others issues especially when their life is on the line. It’s just bad writing with bad characters except for Varian. Varian is only the villain because of the perspective, but if you flip that perspective around, he’s a tragic hero.
@@ashebennett7726 You're right about all of this, especially about Chris S. He wasn't great Varian didn't have anyone for months after losing his dad in the amber (which I'm pretty sure counts as an accident) so it's no wonder why Varian did what he did
To this day, I can't help but worry if Varian was only brought back in Season 3 because of his popularity. Season 1 honestly gave the impression that he was going to end the show imprisoned. Which is ridiculous because out of all the villains, his motivations were actually sympathetic and believable unlike Cassandra's, who's arc was PLANNED for the show, yet had the most unsatisfying fate considering her crimes.
@@delphoxhoopa7289 exactly. He was suppose to have an important role. But because Chris Sonnenburg couldn’t accept that varian was more popular than his fictional oc waifu, Cassandra, he scrapped the original ideas and Varian’s plot importance out of spite. He hated that everyone asked for varian more than Cassandra. He was so petty.
@ashebennett7726 You know...Varian getting sidelined so that Cassandra's villain arc could take the screen was almost an unintentional blessing in disguise. I feel the negativity toward Cassandra's in particular during her villain arc is do to how long they dragged it out. If Varian had stayed a villain past "secret of the sundrop" coupled with how the writing staff only view him as a plot device who doesn't care about who he was before he turned into a villain, I can tell that they would have made Varian commit increasingly vile acts and made him as irredeemable as possible until he had no sympathetic motivations left. They would make sure Varian was hated by the fans if his villain arc lasted any longer than secret of the sundrop. I would argue that the writers took it too far even in the few episodes that he WAS a villain in the second half of season 1. Think about it. The writers care for Cassandra way more than they do with Varian and they set out to make Cassandra sympathetic with deep trauma while also making her this kickass bad girl...and they STILL lost some of the fans by how they portrayed her as a villain. And they care about Cassandra unlike Varian! The writers WANT you to like her and look at the mess they came up with. Imagine how low they would have dragged Varian through the muck, how they would have utterly RUINED his character if they had dragged out his villainy any longer than they did? With them not caring about his character the same way care about the integrity of Cassandra's character. If you like him at all after season 1, it was happy accident because they writers left him alone on his sympathetic tragedy. And even then the writers seemed miffed that he was not hated more for his actions in secret of the sundrop.
Because Chris Sonnenberg loved Cass as a character and hated the Varian fans He even once said that "If you're watching the show because of Varian then you're watching it for all the wrong reasons" (not quoting him verbatim but still)
@@ashebennett7726 Honestly Varian deserves Better, both In Universe and by the writers cause they managed to create a surprisingly great side character that could’ve even had his own spin-off series “Varian and the Seven Kingdoms” but the Creator seemed to have it out for people who liked his arc and character more than his Female OC Cassandra.
He's my fourth favorite character behind Rapunzel, Eugene, and Cassandra. But, I can't deny that outside of the theme song. Varian's first song, Let Me Make You Proud, is my favorite of the series! EEP! :)
Hearing Ready As I’ll Ever Be for the first time was what got me into the show. Varian will always be a favorite of mine, and I’ll always think it’s such a shame that his spin-off was turned down.
I'm glad he didn't get his own show. Disney has this weird chip on their shoulder when it came to him, and I seriously doubt they have let him have any positive writing for any kind of spin-off. I also I read the concepts for his supposed spin-off, and I was unimpressed at best and outright didn't like it at worst. Im glad it didn't happen. He is fine where he left off at the end of the series.
@@Till_is_alive_trust ikr? I was thoroughly impressed by the plot of the series he would’ve had and I am pissed we don’t get it. He is the best character on this show and his show would’ve been better than this. I wish we never had a tangled series tbh and just Varian being a character who exist in the same universe. Varian deserves his own show after how they did him so dirty. They threw away his original arc and made him the straw man, the scapegoat, plot device and exposition fairy when he had the most potential. He was actually originally suppose to have a more important role. The majority of fans want this because they know it’s better and even after all this time, the fandom is still alive and active. Very active. Disney is so stupid not to go through with it. The one thing the majority of fans ask for and all we get are cash grabs nobody wants nor asked for. Plus, Varian and Hugo were suppose to be the new Amity x Luz.
Varian's arc frustrated me too on a rewatch. The only reason it was easier to digest than Cass' was because it was much shorter. Every episode after Queen for a Day, especially in the more chill episodes, I wanted to shout at Rapunzel through the screen. Why was she wasting time in Corona when nothing important happened instead of checking up on Varian? She even has the gall to complain that she had to turn away Varian, her friend, and that's a decision that haunts her... No, it obviously isn't haunting her if she isn't doing anything to talk to him and try to help him now at least. The writers tried hard to make Rapunzel sympathetic even when she treats Varian with such coldness, but he really wasn't a friend to the group and not for the lack of trying. He is treated by Rapunzel, Eugene and Cassandra as just a cute acquaintance and nothing else despite and that would be fine if the narrative didn't insist they are friends. Also the fact that King Fred didn't care about Old Corona and left them to fend for themselves when it came to the spikes is completely forgotten too and he never has to apologize for that, just for not letting Rapunzel do what she wants to do. I also had issues with how his fall to villainy is well paced and makes sense then boom, in the last episode he goes from just doing anything it takes to save his father to deciding to kill the entire royal family as revenge in a second. On top of it, Varian's liking of Flynn Ryder and of Cassandra went absolutely nowhere, those things aren't even mentioned after one or two or episodes and he easily threatens to kill Cass in the finale, lol. It felt like something extra the writers added just so we can see Varian as a villain that needs to be stopped in the climax. But why? I thought showing that the royal family can make mistakes and treat people badly even when they don't mean too was great, it gave them room to improve and put themselves in the shoes of the common people. But no, Varian gets only a sliver of empathy from Rapunzel and her parents even though he was only 14 at the time and was just left without any parents around. Rapunzel is okay with just telling her dad to go easy on him, not even talking to Varian directly once the battle is over, and later on she doesn't even react to the fact that Fred just threw the boy in jail, what a joke... On the other side, remember how she fought for other characters to be given another chance (I'm not only talking about Cass) ? Yeah, poor Varian... To add insult to injury, he's not even left to do the heroic thing to redeem himself. In the first episode of season 3, his explanations for doing what he does are really fitting for his character and a great start to his redemption arc. He helps with information and providing some potions, but then when the time comes for the big, heroic moment Rapunzel pushes him aside. He begs her to let him do it because it's his mess, she simply replies it is his mess but it's also her kingdom, then goes onto saving the day by herself.... because we can't have Rapunzel not being the hero in the episode at that point in the series, not even once. Varian is a great character wasted by the writers bending Rapunzel's personality to do whatever they think it's most flashy, not what makes the most sense. That being said, his songs are absolute bangers. Ready As I'll Ever Be is peak for me despite the context and Nothing Left to Lose is conceptually awesome (I wish it had any effect on the plot though, like perhaps his plea might have convinced Cass to not go too far in a certain situation at least? But no, that didn't happen because Varian is not actually treated like a close enough friend by the main trio). Edit: Let Me Make You Proud is not bad either, it's just that I found the timing for it to be quite strange, if I was running to ask for help to save my parents, my first thought wouldn't be "this will surely make them be proud of me", it would just be the natural thing to do.
I completely agree with everything that you just said. However, I feel like that Let Me Make You Proud song does fit the situation perfectly because he is singing about how his natural thing to do is to go and rescue him because he cares and he knows that it will make him proud. That's pretty much how I saw it anyways.
The thing is, Varian wasn’t attacking anyone innocent. The only one who was truly innocent was Rudiger and transforming him was the only time he did hurt someone who wasn’t abusing him. Everyone was either abusing Varian or enabling his abuse. Ariana wasn’t innocent either. The fact that she does know that her husband abuses his powers and over harshly punishes poor people with hanging and without trial for a non violent crime, he wouldn’t be out of character if he did have Varian banished, imprisoned or executed once he captured him. And Varians life was forfeit the moment the king wanted his scroll and would do anything to keep Varians mouth shut. And Ariana only ever exists to make excuses for his abuse which makes her an enabler. So the main antagonist was actually Frederick. There literally was nothing else Varian could’ve done differently since he was forced to commit crimes for his survival as the royal family neglected him for months, Frederick had Varian hunted down like a dog for months chasing him out of his home by his guards to obtain the scroll and to silence Varian on the matter. He was neglected by the royal family for months, he was vilified for months, and this abuse was enabled for months. Rapunzel doesn’t have any empathy for Varian, only some sympathy and that’s another problem. While it does make since for her character to have no empathy considering she was locked away without any human interaction for most of her life; which presents a good conflict for her character, sadly she never really does learn empathy even as she gains experience throughout the series and still remains uncaring and selfish to the end. In season 3, she becomes a bully that people are scared to correct or call her out even her closest friends and Eugene are scared of her. And Varian was nothing more than a rebound to make herself feel better about being dumped by her best friend. If you think about it, that’s the only reason she actually makes him her “friend” again. It makes zero sense that Varian cares about being her friend again and this isn’t about some stupid promise. Friends actually do stuff together. Friends care when other friends are hurt, scared, sad or in trouble. Rapunzel only ever cared to reach out to Varian when she needed something. It’s really disgusting of her. Only when Varian was willing to have his character assassinated to kiss her arse and do exactly what she wanted and be a rebound in place of Cassandra is when Rapunzel gives a crap about looking his way. And when Varian was kidnapped by Cassandra, she said “what Cassandra will do with Varian” and not “what Cassandra would DO TO Varian”. And she’s more worried about the fact that Eugene’s birthday and her plan for proposal was ruined. She treats Varian and the scroll as an after thought. And ofc when going on a covert mission to retrieve the scroll and rescue Varian inside of Cassandra’s tower does she treat it as some “fun adventure”. Is this Barbie Sue okay? A fun adventure is exploring caves, deep sea diving, climbing mountains, horse back riding on the beach etc. NOT A RESCUE MISSION AND RETRIEVING A WORLD SAVING ARTIFACT!!!! This woman can’t take anything seriously. Even pinkie pie would take it seriously. And new dream is dead. In the time traveling episode, No Time Like The Past, Eugene was right about Cassandra choosing to leave Rapunzel. If somebody doesn’t want anything to do with you anymore, that’s that. There’s nothing you can do about it. To not respect that means to not respect that persons boundaries. And I say this as someone who hates Cassandra. And at the end of the episode, he’s basically lobotomized and no longer has opinions of his own and Rapunzel had the audacity to look so self congratulatory that Eugene doesn’t have the autonomy of his own anymore and has the exact same opinions as her. Not only does rapunzel disrespects Eugene’s opinions, violates his privacy, and trust as she manipulated him as a teen in that episode, and then brainwashes him to think like her (even if accidentally), but she doesn’t have the good grace to tell him. Because as long as rapunzel gets what she wants, nothing else matters. She nor the narrative cares about whatever evil thing she does so long as she gets the desired outcome she wants. And I’m suppose to find their relationship “sweet” and “heartwarming” when her and her now lobotomized bf look dead eyed at a picture of the creators waifu with plastic smiles on their faces. That’s basically the series in a nutshell. And in the last season finale, they act like giving up is a bad thing when it’s actually what will benefit you the most. Cassandra destroyed Corona. Cassandra and Zhan Tiri didn’t act interested in coming after the people of Corona after chasing them out or anyplace besides the island capital. Otherwise, they would’ve done so. So there was no threat once they managed to escape Cassandra’s temper tantrum and destruction and everyone was currently fine. And Rapunzel’s plan is charging back into Corona, in the castle at point blank with the weaker forces which was an incredibly stupid idea. And it does backfire horribly but far be it that Rapunzel faces any type of consequences for her poor leadership. She pointlessly sends her people to their potential deaths just so she can get her bestie back. There’s no reason to fight a demon and an unstable woman with earth bending world destroying powers for a stupid island. If I was one of those subjects, I would move somewhere else and tell her to eff off. And they should too. They literally have no reason to blindly follow her dumba** plan into danger. Rapunzel is not only a bully who scares even her lobotomized parents and her lobotomized bf into submission, but she has become abusive, selfish and kind of a dictator and it’s suppose to be “positive character growth”. They don’t even sneak in, use stealth, lure cass and Zhan tiri into a trap or cause a distraction. They just storm the castle even though they couldn’t fight off Cassandra last time and Rapunzel thought this would be any different. And the one part of the episode I hated the most. Rapunzel gets to pointlessly risk everyone’s life just so she can try to get Cassandra back who is now toxic and has abused and assaulted countless people for very selfish reasons which is treated as noble and moral by the narrative. Meanwhile, a poor abused teenager has to sacrifice his own father life, had to risk killing his dad whom he literally risked everything to save him in season one, in order to rescue the very people who put him through that abuse all because the main character wants to selfishly win her toxic friend who placed Varian’s dad under mind control in the first place. And this is suppose to be deemed as Varian’s redemption arc as heartwarming. That is just so f***ed up beyond belief. Idc that Varian didn’t really kill his dad because that was electricity to the brain! 5 volts should be treated as 2500 volts because it can kill you. Tasers are considered less lethal, and not non lethal for a reason. Just because it’s not a bullet, doesn’t mean it can’t kill you. And Varian used a helmet taser on his own father which was on his head. Which is where the brain is stored! What’s the lesson suppose to be. If you’re born special/rich, it’s okay that you’re selfish and you get to sacrifice other people for your desires and if you’re not born special, its okay for the system to bully you, subjugate you or even try to kill you to benefit the rich? And that we should gladly sacrifice all we hold dear to keep the selfish rich a-holes happy? This show is more messed up than I remember. Screw this show. Screw Rapunzel and her parents. Screw Cassandra. It’s sick. Rapunzel is the worst disney princess ever.
@@ashebennett7726 Once again, you're right about all of this. Rapunzel was horribly written and it was hard to even watch the show sometimes with how she acted It was advertised as a "Coming of Age" story. But as you said, "sadly [Rapunzel] never really does learn empathy even as she gains experience throughout the series and still remains uncaring and selfish to the end." Rapunzel never changes for the better throughout the story
@@cjgamer6356 Maybe so but I think after spending about two years out of the tower, the onus is on Rapunzel. Eugene and Cassandra attempted to teach Rapunzel but there were plenty of times where Rapunzel refused to listen, claiming that she "could take care of herself". True or not, she wasn't pleasant to those who disagreed with her Why blame the teacher(s) when the student refuses to listen?
Exactly, the entire voice cast did a great job, but Jeremy Jordan was always exceptional. From the creaky voice, to the villanous tone, the beautiful singing and everything else, he fully sold this character even when the writing was lackluster. There's no doubt how memorable he made Varian.
@@lasseehrenreich5502I really like let me make you proud especially cuz it was the first song he ever got to do and he did an amazing job especially the reprise
It always bothered me how Rapunzel made no attempt to visit or contact Varian after the blizzard ended. Especially with how guilty she feels for not being able to help him right away, it makes no sense why she didn’t try to see him sooner. It makes the whole conflict at the end of season 1 feel really forced, since his villain arc could’ve been easily been avoided if Rapunzel actually tried to talk to him. There are two things I think we could’ve fixed this. Either have the king forbid Rapunzel and her friends from visiting old Corona due to him being overprotective, and maybe reveal that the king was having the guards intercept Vairan’s letters to Rapunzel. So Varian thinks Rapunzel is just ignoring him. Or, maybe Eugene or Cassandra suggest talking to Varian, but she doesn’t because she feels guilty about what happened and thinks going to him now will feel like too little too late. She says that she’ll go to him once she has an actual solution to the problem. Then have Varian call her out not for not helping him during the blizzard, but for not coming to help him right away, and Rapunzel actually acknowledges her mistake.
I like your suggestions better than what happened in canon Rewatching it, it's not super-surprising to me. Rapunzel has played "favorites" throughout the story. In the episode "Pascal's Story", Pascal is missing for a day and Rapunzel drops everything to go look for him right away and yet does next to nothing to look for Varian even though she hasn't seen him for weeks after the blizzard She also gave up on Varian but wouldn't give up on Cassandra soo 🤷
@@DragonGoddess18 exactly. Rapunzel use to be my third favorite character before the events of Queen for a day. First was Varian of course, second favorite was Eugene and then Rapunzel. But I started losing all my sympathy for Rapunzel after Queen for a day. So yeah, these ideas are so much better than turning these mains into heartless, neglectful, a-holes and having one of them playing favorites. Varian actually had a lot of reasons to do what he did considering he literally had no choice. And it would’ve been compelling writing if king Frederick truly was the villain by the narrative and Rapunzel and everybody else would have no choice but to dethrone and imprison him. Imagine the growth the characters would have especially Rapunzel. And what was Cassandra’s reasons, because her mom didn’t love her or something. Idk. Idk what they were trying to do with Cassandra. But it was dumb. I think it would’ve been cool and dark if Cassandra turned out to be saporian and her parents were killed by king Frederick after trying to get their home back which is what corrupted her to take the moonstone out of revenge. That way, the title Cassandra’s revenge, would’ve made more sense. Or something like that. And the only reason she would actually hurt Rapunzel is because she’s in her way and possessed by the moonstones magic. And once Rapunzel finds out varians letter were intercepted by Frederick and after Rapunzel talks Varian down with compassion and understanding and everybody turns on Frederick and dethrones him, Varian reluctantly agrees to go on this journey with Rapunzel and the gang while Ariana has no choice but to take over until they get back. And Varian becomes the red herring for Cassandra’s betrayal after a prediction was made that someone will betray the group.
I think Varian and Cass have almost inverse problems. Varian’s fall into villainy it makes sense for his character but not for the surrounding characters. Meanwhile Cass’s makes sense in context of The surrounding characters but not her own character
I have to say what I absolutely love about Smarty Pants is that he always makes me feel like my opinions with shows are so validated! EEP! :) I literally remember watching The Tangled Series and was hugely expecting Rapunzel to go and seek Varian after hugely upsetting and disappointing him. Yet, when she didn't I was like, "What the heck, Rapunzel? I thought that you were just like me and always wanted to show care for others. Wouldn't you care if he's still alive? Don't be such a cruel hypocrite." I also completely agree that she should have stopped the guards from dragging Varian away as well. That was ultimate betrayal and character assassination! :( Rapunzel will always be my second favorite Disney Princess behind Ariel, but, yeah, those things bothered me. :(
I agree with what you said. Yes, it didn't make sense for Rapunzel's character to be like this, but at the same time it gave Varian some character arc, which I don't think he would have if they didn't made him a villain in some way. But yes, I'm really mad that they made her let him get dragged away by the guards, that didn't make sense for such a character as Rapunzel at all.
Varian betrays Rapunzel because she didn't help him save his father. Spends 1 year in prison. Harsh, yet somewhat understandable. Raps could've shared some of the blame tho': she pretty much dismissed the cries of help of her friend. She had to save the kingdom, that's fair, but what about afterwards?? Cass betrays Rapunzel because she believed Gothel gave Raps all the love (never did since she's a monster of a woman) and had undeniable proof that was never the case and STILL believes Zhantiri like a fool. Rapunzel keeps on giving her second chances and Cass rebuffs them every single time 'til the last second and she gets away with no consequences. I want to believe Cass got told she was banished from the kingdom off screen (AS SHE DESERVES) because HOW IS THAT FAIR?!
exactly! cass only redeemed herself after she’d lost the moonstone and was trapped with rapunzel in a rock cage. i mean, you could say the same for varian, but he clearly felt bad about everything he was doing with the saporians, and he betrayed the saporians the moment they broke their deal that no-one would get hurt (poor varian, so many broken promises 😭).
Honestly Varian deserves Better, both In Universe and by the writers cause they managed to create a surprisingly great side character that could’ve even had his own spin-off series “Varian and the Seven Kingdoms” but the Creator seemed to have it out for people who liked his arc and character more than his Female OC Cassandra. Dude is a great breakout character.
@@leonormarques6250Yeah it’s TRUE!! Varian was not only very popular with the fandom, but had potential for a series spinoff called “Varian and the Seven Kingdoms” with him as the main character You can even search on RUclips for potential sketches on the show But unfortunately the producers denied it. For the petty reason of “the series wouldn’t be popular without Rapunzel as the Main Character!”
@@toadlord8594 I knew about that part (not the justification, that, honestly sucks), but I was curious about Cassandra being the OC insert of the creator. Can u please tell me more
sure, but tbh i was glad of it 😭 he’s my favourite tts character, it hurt to see him as a villain for so long. also, you could say that he began to start his redemption a few months into his year in prison. of course, he joined the saporians, but he said himself he only did it so that everyone could forget what he had done. he regretted it all, and rapunzel returning and the saporians betraying his trust by breaking the deal that no-one was to be hurt just gave him his chance to redeem himself, so it’s technically not that rushed.
Tangled the series is my favorite show but some of its flaws are hard to overlook I’ve read some fanfiction that gave believable and in-character reasons for why Rapunzel wouldn’t seek out Varian after the storm but they still didn’t feel very satisfying imo In fact they just made it more obvious to me how weird and out of character it was for her in the first place when I didn’t think that originally Anyway great video! I liked how sympathetic you were towards Varian and how you framed his turn as a result of his mental health I thought that was cool and I rarely hear it spoken about in that way
Yes, the spin-off was titled Varian and the Seven Kingdoms, which was unfortunately rejected due to the simple reason... that the producers thought that a series without Rapunzel as the main character was not going to be popular. And that makes me so angry because Varian is literally the most popular character on this show, everyone would have loved to see more of him and the world they live in.
I think it was very out of character for Rapunzel, I wish there was some sort of blockade between corona and lower Corona, caused by the blizzard maybe, that prevented Raps from getting to Varian, or perhaps the black rocks could have gotten so out of control that Raps can't get into lower corona, so it's only when Varian, maybe riding on the back of a mutant Ruddiger or by some other kind of mechanical/alchemic means gets into Corona and they can have the stealing flower episode ,then after that she can get to Varian to get the queen back via hot air balloon or something, I mean they play that cheat card later on in the series... what actually happens just makes me really dislike Raps which makes me sad because I love her character sooo much, but the way she treats Varian is just horrible, she goes on a bloody painting lesson after Varian gets kicked out into the blizzard that nearly killed her parents to meet his dead dad, like WTF RAPS!!!! anyways rant over 😅
How Varian’s character was handled in the series makes a lot of sense when you learn that Chris (TTS creator) essentially hated Varian and his fans. He would get mad whenever someone brought him up, and it got so bad that he got banned from the Discord server.
In season one the episode that introduces those two criminal sisters (red and angry), when they are caught and taken to the castle king fredric literally says "I can't send children to jail" (something like that) and then at the end of the season varian gets sent to jail. If varian actually got the spinoff he deserved it would be really cool to see him actually still hold a little resentment toward rapunzel and the others for all this stuff. (you guys should look into varian and the seven kingdoms because its really cool but sadly not green lit)
YESS I’D’VE ACTUALLY *LOVED* TO SEE THAT IN VAT7K but tbh even if disney had made vat7k i doubt they’d do that since they couldn’t possibly show rapunzel in a bad light!
For me, the thing that made the least sense about the whole show was how Rapunzel was always naive and trusted others too much, even though at the end of the film she had discovered that her entire life was a lie and the person she loved and trusted most was the villain. How can I not have trust issues after that? Instead of her starting out so open and energetic, wouldn't it have made more sense for her to slowly return to trusting others at the beginning of the first season?
@notrealyBea I don't think that's her personality. You would have to really break her emotionally first her to withdraw and act distrustful. After Cassandra's betrayal, she briefly starts distancing herself from everyone.
As silly as this may seem, as a diehard Varian fan, this video made me tear up. It’s so refreshing to see discourse like this that recognizes the potential and the flaws of how this storyline was written without either completely infantilizing Varian (even though he’s our baby ☺️) or making Rapunzel out to be some kind of irredeemable b!tch. I also agree wholeheartedly on your point about Varian’s punishment being way too harsh. I’m pretty sure King Frederic promised to get him help at the end of season one, but he sucks so it doesn’t surprise me that it didn’t end up happening.
One thing that still messes with me about Varians villain arc is how Rapunzel didn’t check up on him afterwards? Like was that an animation error of something, I feel like it doesn’t make any sense especially seeing how Rapunzels personality is!
Maybe Corona treats minors over the age of 12 as adults if they commit crimes? In the time travel episode the guards put teenage Lance in a dungeon cell with Shorty who is old drunk. I know this is fantacy, but it still takes place in the past where they had different sensibilities than our modern ones. It also makes a weird kind of sense that Varian and Andrew would be jailed together. They both committed acts against the kingdom of Corona, where Andrew is a saporian separatist that tried to overthrow the kingdom and Varian committed treason by threatening the kingdom and kidnapped the Queen. Their crimes were similar so they both were imprisoned together. I think where you get imprisoned goes by your crime not your age. Honestly how many other 14 year olds are in the dungeons for anything other than petty crimes? They probably thought Varian was too dangerous to be housed with anyone his own age. I don't agree with it, but I also see what the captain of the guard and King Frederick's logic was behind it. Shame it shot them in the foot in the end
@azureaquarius4487 Agreed. I GET the thought process of it like I said, but I don't agree with it. I felt it was such an injustice that Varian ended up at the mercy of someone who sent the gaurds to silence him, which exasperated his situation. I strongly believe that being targeted like that sent Varian over the edge and contributed to him feeling like everyone was out to get him and that everyone had turned on him. The most powerful person in the kingdom, THE KING used his power and resources in an underhanded way to silence Varian, making him feel victimized by the ultimate authority firgure, is the one who is entrusted to decide his fate. When he didn't treat one of his subjects with honor to begin with? The narrative was so mean spirited and lopsidedly biased toward Varian's character in season 1.
@@Passions5555 I guess my overall problem is how the show and and some people will make so many excuses for Fredrick and act like he had no power in the situation completely forgetting that he is in fact a king with a lot of power like yeah I know he didn't know how to solve the rockproblem, but he didn't have to make the problem worse than it already was instead of wasting everyone's time threatening an orphan, keeping secrets, and pretending like the problem was not happening he could have just told people the truth and prepared them for the possibility of evacuating the kingdom, he moved the people of Old Corna but he also gave them false hope of the possibility of fixing their homes even though he had no intention to do so I get he was paranoid and didn't want to accept responsibility but doesn't excuse the fact he didn't have to be so excessive
The reason his spinoff was never done was because disney thought he wasn't popular enough or so I've heard like DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE ??????? Varian and the 7 kingdoms looked so good, the characer design was beautiful and it would have been divine to hear Jeremy as Varian again
I agree with that but my biggest issue was always that instead of seeking revenge for being tossed into a jail for a year and forgotten, the first thing he wants to do is erase his mistakes....not get even with the person who wronged you? Not trying again and again to get Rapunzel's powers?? For a curious, stubborn, tenacious character who went so far as to kidnap her to save his father's life, this is so wack. I hate this redemption so much because it's so weird. First things first, he should be doing everything in his power to escape, then plot against her and try again but it's like the writers swept all that under the rug. If u wanted a TRUE redemption than he should also be free from the constraints of the jail and law of the kingdom, and thro action and trial realize that he should have looked at it from another angle and tried other means to save his dad MAYBE even joining the group to the Dark Kingdom a bit more sour towards the characters than before, rebuilding wat they lost.
To me, his redemption makes sense because deep down, he is actually a good person, and there were hints even during the secret of the sundrop finsle that he knew what he was doing was wrong and he was disappointed in himself. He loses, gets tossed in jail and is left to ruminate on what led up to his imprisonment and his father's situation and I think he realizes that his actions led to his ruin even if he felt wronged. He desecrated his soul, taking on the role he felt fate had given him and hardened himself up to survive and to avenge himself from the people who abandoned and persecuted him. And for what? He got NOTHING from it and only lost his morals and acted without honor in a way that he could never be proud of himself or his father. As tenacious, driven, and focused as Varian is, he is not a naturally vindictive person, and when his high emotions ebbed, he was forced to reevaluate his actions and realize he handled the situation wrong. I would have preferred that he decided to stop attacking the kingdom and stopped seeking revenge on Rapunzel in order to redeem himself for HIMSELF because he sacrificed his morals and ethics to get what he wanted and only hurt himself. It it wasn't worth his integrity or soul. So, him not wanting to continue antagonizing everyone makes sense for me. I am slightly less convinced that he would want to be friends with Rapunzel again, though. I think he could have acknowledged that Rapunzel was not really responsible for his dad's situation and realized that attacking her and her mother was effed up of him, and I can see him trying to make amends with her is fine, but wanting to be friends again? I think he would not want that because he did feel let down and abandoned by her, and it's fair to not want a friendship with her. That part of wanting to be friends again felt like writers were flattering Rapunzel too much and to have her think she could reconnect with Cassandra again.
For me it makes sense that he’d try to erase everything cuz at the end of the day he is a kid. Makes sense he’d want things to go back to normal more than revenge
I find it a little bit weird that everyone except for Rapunzel in the kingdom thought Varian attacked Rapunzel during the blizzard even though he was asking her to help with his dad
@ninjamasternick3323 What I find weird about that is when Nigel said to Rapunzel's face that Varian attacked her, she doesn't correct him that "no he didn't attack me" but then when Varian tells Rapunzel that he has had "to lay low. The people of Corona aren't too keen on people who attack their princess" (paraphrased). Rapunzel's reacts like she's shocked, like this is the first time she has heard this false account. I can't decide if it's her reacting to the false rumor going past the castle walls to the point it was affecting Varian when she thought the incident was confined to just the castle gaurds, Nigel, Cass, and the Captain, or if she knew the rumor spread past the castle and but she naively thought the citizens of Corona wouldn't harm him in her defense.
I know someone in the film industry and I think that in very early drafts of the series Varian was supposed to free ZhanTiri bc he thought she could save his dad
That would be awful. It would made his character totally irredeemable to selfishly release an evil demon on the world just to save his father. Sometimes I'm glad they shelved his arc for a season .
@@Passions5555 The way it was explained to me was that he freed zhantiri after she promised him that she only wanted to help free his father, the arc of him defying the other prisoners was supposed to be him & zhantiri who then took the place of Cassandra
@@eliskacerna4189 Thank you for telling me this, I appreciate the insider information. However, to be honest I may very well be in the minority here, and I have gotten flack for voicing this, but I did not like Varian's villain arc in this show. I am in the minority, but I dislike Varian's villain arc. I personally feel they took his actions too far and sacrificed the integrity of his character so long as he fulfilled the narrative purpose of antagonizing Rapunzel enough to have her empowerment moment and launch her into her season 2 journey outside of Corona. I appreciate that the next time we see Varian he sorted himself out and did the right thing. Now I feel how the writers handled this was rushed, underwhelming, and a tad didn't make sense, but I do like how Varian puts aside his vengeful feelings and acknowledges that his father's situation was most his own fault and to back off on lashing out. Him recognizing this and backing down is great. I think Varian manages to get out of his villain arc mostly unscathed because of how short it was. If they had dragged it out and made him the reason an evil demon gets released that hurts people, I don't know if that would have been a step too far in making him completely irredeemable. After season 1 I didn't trust the writers to treat Varian's character justly (as a villain), because all the things he does as a bad guy is to imply a comparison between himself and Rapunzel of why she is better and more deserving to get what she wants, and he is worse than her, and doesn't deserve what he wants, and needs punishment. In Cassandra's villain arc, she gets tricked into letting Zhan Tiri out UNINTENTIONALLY, and a lot of people in the fandom condemn her for her selfish actions for it. The kicker is that Cassandra is the centerpiece of the story, and the writers had the intention of making Cassandra tragically sympathetic due to Zhan Tiri's manipulation, so they crafted the story for you to feel sympathy for her and a sizable chunk of the audience didn't. The writers don't care about Varian as they do Cassandra because he was just a plot device villain. If they had taken him down the same path of releasing Zhan Tiri as Cassandra did, they would have been entirely less charitable with how they had him go about it. Those are my thoughts on this and why I am glad it ultimately didn't happen. Sorry for rambling. I know this may be a weird stance to have but I have strong opinions on it and strongly disliked how the integrity of Varian's character was handled during his villain arc. I don't want you to think I was ungrateful for the insider information you shared about what was planned for him before rewrites scrapped the idea.
right, don't attack me for this, i'm not saying that varian wasn't done dirty, he 100% was, but. in queen for a day, when rapunzel couldn't help him and he was thrown out of the palace and ran back home, when he found his dad, after probably hours of crying at the amber, in "let me make you proud (reprise)", he says, "anybody who stands or has stood in my path, they're going to pay". so, even before rapunzel had ignored him and before he had even gone out and shunned by the coronans, he was planning his revenge on rapunzel. ofc, it's more likely that if rapunzel had helped him right after that instead of going to painting lessons, he wouldn't have enacted his revenge and just been glad of his dad being back, but it's still interesting to think that he was vengeful before anything else happened. either way, they did varian DIRTY and the way he was thrown into prison with an manipulative adult who just so happens to also be a terrorist, and the way that rapunzel didn't think of him as a friend after he betrayed her, compared to cass, who she is convinced is still her friend, (even though cass did worse things by that point), and the way that cass got off with no actual punishment (it's possible she was exiled, but i don't really think so. i don't know. also, wouldn't crimes like that be punished with more than just exile?) and that varian, a scared, grieving child, was thrown into prison for a full year, really pisses me off just thinking about it. rapunzel literally says, "i don't even know what he is anymore!" about varian when he'd put the truth serum into the cookies and when he was only trying to get the flower, but when cass literally kidnaps varian and attacks the rest of them, she says (after eugene was rightfully worried for rapunzel), "this is cassandra! not some monster!" you see how biased the writing is? also cass' motives, whilst not entirely ridiculous, are pretty stupid reasons for her to become a full on murderous villain. i mean, varian, whilst he probably should not have done what he did, he had just lost his only parent. his mother isn't in the show, and according to vat7k lore, she left when varian was a toddler, so varian only had his dad, and lost him too, and even though the amber was technically his fault, it wouldn't have happened if rapunzel hadn't asked him to investigate the rocks. so yk thanks for coming to my ted talk i just hate how varian was done so dirty
Corona didn’t know how to make hot air balloons, varian got the idea from the people who helped him invade corona, rapunzel even says in return to the spire that the trip that originally took them months only took them a few days by ballon
Yeah...I am ngl one thing about TTS that rather clunked its storylines half the time is how they forced most of Rapunzel's characterization, especially during half of Season 3 she felt low key flanderized half the time. I mean it's not too surprising that most of the writing probably had certain limitations because of it being on brand for Disney and for sure in some way it is gonna affect most of the way storylines may function but that just throws coherence out the window. That said Rapunzel had a decent Arc imo but it's weird whenever the pitfalls said for it are apparent, like Queen For A Day because well they can't make her seem too flawed Ig because she is a Disney princess...
i think its worth noting that he gets tossed into prison as in like, adult prison, like his cellmate is andrew and that guy is in his 30s or something, like no juvenile detention or anything? adult prison?? i know this is kind of an olden-days show but thats kinda bonkers
FIRST OFF VARIAN IS PRECIOUS AND AMAZING, SECOND OFF, Varian was only 14 when his dad was literally INCASED in a frickin CRYSTAL, and then he goes to find help and ten is REJECTED B EVERYONE AND THROWN OUT INTO THE FRICKIN BLIZZARD, AND THEN he tries to save his dad himself, AND THEN HE FAILS AGAIN. Varian did what he did for his Dad, and then he, being a fourteen year old, GETS LIKE 15 YEARS IN PRISON. AND THEN CASSANDRA DECIDES SHE WANTS TO BE EVIL BECAUSE HER MOM LIKED RAPUNZEL MORE THEN HER SO SHE DECIDES SHE'LL HATE RAPUNZEL FOR IT, AND THEN SHE PROCEEDS TO KIDNAP MULTIPLE PEOPLE AND LITERALLY DESTROY THE WHOLE FRICKIN KINGDOM WITH HER FRICKIN ROCKS, and tell me, what punishment does she get?.... ABSOLUTELY NONE. YOU CAN'T TREAT VARIAN LIKE THAT. Not to mention Disney REJECTING VARIAN'S SHOW. HOW DARE THEY? HOW DARE THEY?
Yeah, it doesn't make sense, and she never once apologizes for it. It's like, Varian's fall into villainy somehow turned her wrong into a right. And lets not forget that Varian's a boy and Cass is a girl. Of course they would go easy on her!
I didn't get the sense that Cassandra got a vagina pass I got the sense that Cassandra was given more grace because Rapunzel simply cares about her more.
A little detail but in Season 3 Episode 6 Varian had told Xavier-- the Blacksmith and practically Corona capital historian-- that "the Saporians used hot air balloons, I know how to build one." He knew and not this blacksmith whose been around the block and that's only because Andrew and the rest of the Separatists would have taught him or he got the deal through osmosis. And in Andrew's introductory episode we see that neither the princess nor Eugene have ever been on a hot air balloon before, possibly not even Cass, the other two were mesmerized by the experience. And back to Season 3 the Saporians were ruling the kingdom and making this tech on masse for their plan. So I don't think the balloon was an option until Season 3 since before then only Andrew and his faction could build one and later Varian but he was their enemy. More than likely Mime smuggled that balloon to flight across the land to the Dark Kingdom out of desperation despite being an unknown piece of transport but again, desperation would have set in by now and possibly the osmosis learning if the Saporians had cracked down their influence on the people of Corona. Whose to say they didn't do so culturally too?
5:30 my headcanon is that cassandra doesn't receive the death penalty because she didn't mean to bring back zhan tiri, and helped to kill zhan tiri, so it cancels out, and instead she gets exiled from corona for all the terrorism. But honeslty most of the characters do stuff that's bad enough to get the death penalty, like varian kidnapping the queen of corona and holding her hostage, demanding a ransom and threatening to kill her, yet they get a slap on the wrist at worst. It's like if osama bin laden got a my little pony redemption after making some friends and saying sorry. It honeslty ruined the immersion and took me out of the story quite a bit because it felt like the show didn't take what it was showing me (it's own conflicts) seriously. Like rapunzel literally watched as varian threatened to encase her mom in crystal to kill her and still thought to herself that he can be redeemed and should be forgiven.
Varian was treated as a monster because his childish behavior led to his villain arc, and had to learn to move past it, which of course he had to, now that would be all fine and good if there wasn't a double standard to how the show outright coddles, excuses, and justifies Fred, rapunzel, and Cassandra childish behavior. at least Varian has something of a reason he's an actual child, Fred, rapunzel, and Cassandra are adults who honestly should know better.
Ngl I think she could have been very distracted especially cause of what was going on with her parents that could have led her to forget about varian so that could be a possibility
During the flower-stealing episode Rapunzel mentions that off screen she sent guards to Old Corona after the blizzard, but they didn't find anything because Varian had already gone into hiding. It's AN explanation for why Rapunzel wasn't more active in the Varian issue, but certainly not the best. This is a rare instance of episodes being aired out of order benefitting a show, because the production order had Queen for a Day in the middle of the season, but the airing schedule put it later at the beginning of a string of plot-relavant episodes containing Varian's villain arc. If it feels like Rapunzel dropped the ball as a friend with the season as-is, imaging how much worse it would be if she were going on a bunch of goofy slice-of life misadventures while Varian was in hiding totally alone in the world omg
I don’t think that Rapunzel mentioned anything about sending guards to Old Corona. She was talking about the guards that her dad sent to chase Varian out of his home.
Ngl I was sad cause I love varian and cass but the writer's did them dirty especially cass its not really something that I could see se1 cass doing and varian like fredy boy said he would help him but I see no help anywhere it's just really sad cause I really like se1 and se2
I just hope that in the movie of Shrek 5, once Disney buys DreamWorks, all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses appear, especially the most important character in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, with her best friends Zephyr, Tip, Dash, Kiera and Catalina, and besides, they will be the new main characters of the movie of Shrek 5 so that they help Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Dulcinea, The Three Diablos, Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and The Others to defeat Rumpelstiltskin, Death, Drizella Tremaine, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, as Queen Grimhilde, Lady Tremaine, Captain Hook, Hades, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, Marina del Rey, Ursula, Gaston LeGume, Jafar, John Ratcliffe, Shan Yu, Yzma, Dr. Facilier, Zhan Tiri, Judge Claude Frollo, Mother Gothel, Tamatoa, Drago Bludvist, Grimmel The Grisly, Mor'du, King Runeard, Prince Hans, Pitch Black, Dr. Zara, Queen Nerissa, King Magnifico, Rapunzel (Shrek) and Morgana, and to prevent Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks from ruling and destroying all The Multiverse Forever, especially The Kingdom of Far Far Away, Shrek along with his wife named Princess Fiona will need help from their new friends which are all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses, as Prince Florian, Princess Snow White, Prince Charming, Princess Cinderella, The Baker, Anastasia Tremaine, Prince Philip, Princess Aurora, Prince Eric, Princess Ariel, Prince Adam, Princess Belle, Prince Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, Prince John Smith, Princess Pocahontas, Prince Li Shang, Princess Fa Mulan, Prince Naveen, Princess Tiana, Prince Flynn Rider, Princess Rapunzel, Varian, Cassandra, Maui, Queen Moana Waialiki, Hiccup Haddock, Princess Merida, Kristoff Bjorgman, Queen Anna, Jack Frost, Princess Elsa, Miguel Rivera, Princess Raya, Walter Beckett, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Jin, Yi, Connor, Ruby Gillman, Starboy, Princess Asha, Mateo, Queen Elena, Prince Desmond, Princess Amber, Prince James, Princess Isabel, Prince Hugo, Princess Sofia, Namaari, The Futuristic Four, The Other Six Princesses of The Kingdom of Atlantica and Melody, but actually, Melody is The First and Only that she is not a True Official Disney Princess, because Melody made her debut in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea and it is also because she is The First and Only Daughter of an Official Disney Princess, but Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Dulcinea, The Three Diablos, Goldilocks, The Three Bears, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and The Others also need Melody's help to protect and save all The Multiverse, especially Their Kingdom of Far Far Away away from Rumpelstiltskin, Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, because Melody is The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, but also The Death of Queen Lillian, because since her husband named King Harold passed away in the movie of Shrek 3, she has felt heartbroken and that caused her own death in her Kingdom of Far Far Away, and all The Inhabitants of The Kingdom of Far Far Away are saddened by The Death of Queen Lillian, because now she is with her husband named King Harold in heaven, and now they have lost their queen, that means now The Kingdom of Far Far Away needs a new queen and King Artie said that his love interest, girlfriend, fiancée and former classmate from Worcestershire school called Princess Guinevere would be the one to be The New Queen of Far Far Away, so King Artie decided to return to his old school called Worcestershire along with Shrek, with his older cousin Princess Fiona, with Donkey, with Dragon, with Puss in Boots, with Kitty Softpaws, with Perrito, with Dulcinea, with The Three Diablos, with Goldilocks, with The Three Bears, with The Children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, with The Children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and with the Others to meet again with their friends from their school who are actually Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany and his love interest, girlfriend and fiancée Princess Guinevere to take them back to his Kingdom of Far Far Away, and also The Romance of all The Official Disney Princes and all The Official Disney Princesses, especially The Romance of Maui and Queen Moana Waialiki, The Romance of Hiccup Haddock and Princess Merida, The Romance of Jack Frost and Princess Elsa, The Romance of Varian and Cassandra, The Romance of Starboy and Princess Asha, The Romance of Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany and The Romance of King Artie and Princess Guinevere, because I think that Maui will be Queen Moana Waialiki's love interest, boyfriend and fiancé, while Hiccup Haddock will be Princess Merida's love interest and boyfriend, Princess Tiffany will be Prince Lancelot's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée and Princess Guinevere will be King Artie's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée, because Queen Moana Waialiki is going to fall in love with Maui, Princess Merida is going to fall in love Hiccup Haddock, Princess Tiffany is going to fall in love with Prince Lancelot and Princess Guinevere is going to fall in love with King Artie, but they don't know how to tell them their feelings towards them and neither how to win their hearts, because every time Queen Moana Waialiki gets too close to Maui when it comes to true love, she gets very nervous with him, while which in the case of Princess Merida is also the same, because whenever Princess Merida gets too close to Hiccup Haddock when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous with him, in the case of Princess Tiffany it is also the same, because whenever Princess Tiffany gets too close to Prince Lancelot when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, and in the case of Princess Guinevere too, because every time Princess Guinevere gets too close to King Artie when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, but luckily for them, Princess Fiona will help Queen Moana Waialiki to win The Heart of Maui, also Princess Merida to win The Heart of Hiccup Haddock, also Princess Tiffany to win The Heart of Prince Lancelot and also Princess Guinevere to win The Heart of King Artie, and I also want that Jack Frost will be Princess Elsa's love interest and boyfriend and Varian will be Cassandra's love interest and boyfriend, because Jack Frost leaves fall in love with Princess Elsa, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Jack Frost gets too close to Princess Elsa when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, because Varian leaves fall in love with Cassandra, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Varian gets too close to Cassandra when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, but fortunately for they, Shrek will help Jack Frost to win The Heart of Princess Elsa and also Varian to win The Heart of Cassandra, except Melody, The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, because she doesn't need a love interest, but also The Rivalry of King Artie and Queen Anna because they both want to compete in a challenge to see who is The Best Ruler of a Kingdom, because both want to do what is best for Their Own Kingdom, because King Artie wants to do the best for his Kingdom of Far Far Away because now he is The New King of Far Far Away and Queen Anna wants to do the best for her Kingdom of Arendelle because now she is The New Queen of Arendelle, but at the end, King Artie and Queen Anna become best friends in the world, because at the end, they both learned from their mistakes that they have made since their challenge to compete to see who is the best ruler of a Kingdom, and that at the end, King Artie and Princess Guinevere see their first true love kiss and that they become a romantic couple, just like Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany, and also that at the end of the movie of Shrek 5, Shrek becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princes and Maui, Hiccup Haddock, Kristoff Bjorgman, Jack Frost, Varian, Jin, Connor, The Baker, Starboy, Mateo, Prince Desmond, Prince James, Prince Hugo, Prince Lancelot and King Artie become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princes, while Princess Fiona becomes The New Leader of The Official Disney Princesses and Queen Anna, Princess Elsa, Cassandra, Yi, Ruby Gillman, Anastasia Tremaine, Princess Asha, Queen Elena, Princess Amber, Princess Isabel, Princess Sofia, Goldilocks, Namaari, The Other Six Princesses of The Kingdom of Atlantica, Princess Tiffany and Princess Guinevere become The New Official Members of The Official Disney Princesses and that one day, Princess Tiffany will be The Wife of Prince Lancelot and that they have a family in the future, and that also Princess Guinevere is The Wife of King Artie, that they also have a family and that she becomes The New Queen of Far Far Away in The Future.
As for Varian being jailed and Cassandra not, Varian was still angry and vengeful and a threat risk after his defeat. Frederic, for his part, vowed to help him and look for a way to help Quirin; Corona just doesn’t seem to have any therapists and no one found anything for the amber situation. Meanwhile, Cassandra had cooled down and turned good again, having helped to save Corona and the world, so incarceration wasn’t a pressing need. Once Varian turned things around himself, he was free to go even though he did just commit treason again. Though he still had to earn the people's trust back. Considering the Snuggly Duckling thugs are walking around, prison doesn’t seem to be the first solution unless there is an immediate recidivism risk. (And Corona doesn't seem to have a prison industrial complex and prison labor situation.)
The thing is, Cassandra didn't "cool down." she "SHUT DOWN." She lost. Right up to the moment the moon stone was taken from her she was going through with taking the sundrop from Rapunzel (while gloating that she finally got one over on Rapunzel.) Then Zhan Tiri snatches the moon stone and sundrop away and then Rapunzel and her were stuck together in a black rock cage. Rapunzel had already forgiven her because instead of being mad at Cassandra, she spent the whole fight with her leading up to Zhan Tiri stealing the moon stone trying to get through to her and talk her down, only pushing back in self defense. She didn't turn good until after she lost because she was fully going through with it until Zhan Tiri took her victory over Rapunzel away The big difference between how Rapunzel reacted to both Varian and Cassandra turning antagonistic toward her was that she never stopped treating Cassandra like a friend, while with Varian as soon as he turned on her, she gave up on him and treated him accordingly as her enemy. And fair enough for what he did. But Cassandra gets preferential treatment for her wrongdoing. You said that the difference is that Varian was still angry?. I have no doubt that just like Cassandra after being defeated, he shut down too while entrapped in his automaton and probably could not get out either. But where Cassandra falls into the coddling, forgiving arms of Rapunzel after she shut down after her defeat and is soothed by her, Varian is clapped in irons, and is met with a cold dungeon as he carted away in front of on lookers. I know Cassandra means more to raps, but it was still an irritating contrast.
@@Passions5555 A reason why Rapunzel acted towards Cassandra that way was that she learned from her treatment towards Varian and him turning good again.
@@Passions5555And to top it all off, Varian’s a MINOR. It doesn’t exempt him from punishment of course, but like you said, it’s bonkers that he actually faces the consequences of his actions, while Cassandra, who did WORSE things on top of the same crimes, for far less sympathetic reasons, gets off scott free.
@@beingafk3494 still has pretty messed up double standards that she was willing to put the kingdom's life in danger to protect Cassandra but is unwilling to go against her father to help save Varian fathers life and that Rapunzel never gives up on Cass even though she tried to kill her multiple times because of petty jealousy. At the same time, Varian only attacked her through desperation and still treated him like a monster. since there is no scene of Rapunzel admitting she learned through her experiences with Varian all it really is is hypocrisy and favoritism
My head cannon is that Fredrick told her that he would check to see if Quirin was ok then after finding out what happened lied about it and preceeded to make Varians life as difficult as possible to punish him for what he had done to Quirin. This would explain why rapunzel didn't check in with Varian if she was tricked.
Except that's not what happened on screen. Rapunzel wasn't kept from checking on him after the storm. Not even her father verbally forbids her from doing so. Rapunzel decides on her own volition to not follow up on him. Although I think King Daddy gave Rapunzel projects (like an art project painting a wall) to passively keep her occupied while he made Varian's life difficult and Rapunzel jumped at these projects as a distraction. The thing is that Rapunzel on her own decides that because she couldn't help Varian when he initially asks that she lost her chance to help him at all and decides to not deal with it. But instead of dealing with the issue she forces herself to forget about it and ignores him while going on with her life like nothing happended. I think this shows us how Rapunzel dealt with unpleasant experiences while living in the tower. She blocked what upsets her and forgets about it and carries on with life. It's a maladaptive defense mechanism she developed to survive her living situation that makes, her cone off as insensitive and uncaring now that she no longer in her old situation. Rapunzel dropping the ball to follow up on Varian's situation could have been a great character exploration for her but they instead gloss over her part in screwing Varian over by making his wrongs erase her wrongs so she remains blameless.
I’ve always thought his villain arc was weak with little motive and every one loves it but hates on Cassie’s arc even though I really like memes her arc but varion when looking back on it it’s nothing really special with really little motive
Technically we don't know if Varian was in prison for an entire year. It could also be that he was just in there for a few days before he joined the saporians and invaded Corona with them. Also he was put there to "cool off". The King said he wanted to help Varian and his dad, but Varian was still filled with anger and a danger to other people in that state. Edit: People like to think the King did not try to help Varian while Rapunzel was gone, but we do not know that for sure since we do not really go back to what is happening in Corona during season 2. It could be that Frederic and/or Arianna tried to talk to Varian, but Varian was not ready accept help.

He wasn't great
Varian didn't have anyone for months after losing his dad in the amber (which I'm pretty sure counts as an accident) so it's no wonder why Varian did what he did
To this day, I can't help but worry if Varian was only brought back in Season 3 because of his popularity.
LITERALLY!!!!! I WILL NEVER FORGIVE DISNEY FOR WHAT THEY DID TO VARIAN.
i think he actually only was brought back bc of his popularity, and it breaks my heart
I am to this day, still so confused about how Cass escaped with zero consequences. Varian deserved so much better
Because Chris Sonnenberg loved Cass as a character and hated the Varian fans
He even once said that "If you're watching the show because of Varian then you're watching it for all the wrong reasons" (not quoting him verbatim but still)

Varian is my favourite chracter in all of Tangled. His songs are probably the best in my opinion.
He's my fourth favorite character behind Rapunzel, Eugene, and Cassandra.
But, I can't deny that outside of the theme song.
Varian's first song, Let Me Make You Proud, is my favorite of the series! EEP! :)
It's sad that he had such a powerful angelic singing voice but also gets the least amount songs to sing in the main cast. 😭
Hearing Ready As I’ll Ever Be for the first time was what got me into the show. Varian will always be a favorite of mine, and I’ll always think it’s such a shame that his spin-off was turned down.
It’s upsetting that he didn’t get his own show, even though Disney should’ve KNOWN Varian is the fan favorite 😭
There's fanfics of it featuring Varian's boyfriend Hugo
Rapunzel was horribly written and it was hard to even watch the show sometimes with how she acted

I like your suggestions better than what happened in canon
Rewatching it, it's not super-surprising to me. Rapunzel has played "favorites" throughout the story. In the episode "Pascal's Story", Pascal is missing for a day and Rapunzel drops everything to go look for him right away and yet does next to nothing to look for Varian even though she hasn't seen him for weeks after the blizzard
She also gave up on Varian but wouldn't give up on Cassandra soo

EEP! :)
I literally remember watching The Tangled Series and was hugely expecting Rapunzel to go and seek Varian after hugely upsetting and disappointing him.
Yet, when she didn't I was like,
"What the heck, Rapunzel? I thought that you were just like me and always wanted to show care for others. Wouldn't you care if he's still alive? Don't be such a cruel hypocrite."
I also completely agree that she should have stopped the guards from dragging Varian away as well.
That was ultimate betrayal and character assassination! :(
Rapunzel will always be my second favorite Disney Princess behind Ariel, but, yeah, those things bothered me. :(
I agree with what you said.
I want to believe Cass got told she was banished from the kingdom off screen (AS SHE DESERVES) because HOW IS THAT FAIR?!
exactly! cass only redeemed herself after she’d lost the moonstone and was trapped with rapunzel in a rock cage. i mean, you could say the same for varian, but he clearly felt bad about everything he was doing with the saporians, and he betrayed the saporians the moment they broke their deal that no-one would get hurt (poor varian, so many broken promises 😭).

sure, but tbh i was glad of it 😭 he’s my favourite tts character, it hurt to see him as a villain for so long. also, you could say that he began to start his redemption a few months into his year in prison. of course, he joined the saporians, but he said himself he only did it so that everyone could forget what he had done. he regretted it all, and rapunzel returning and the saporians betraying his trust by breaking the deal that no-one was to be hurt just gave him his chance to redeem himself, so it’s technically not that rushed.
Kinda but at the same time it wasn't dragged out at the very least.
I SEE VARIAN IN THE THUMBNAIL I CLICK
This is why I really separate the tv from the movie because I really think the movie Rapunzel would NEVER treat Varian like this.
Tangled the series is my favorite show but some of its flaws are hard to overlook
I’ve read some fanfiction that gave believable and in-character reasons for why Rapunzel wouldn’t seek out Varian after the storm but they still didn’t feel very satisfying imo In fact they just made it more obvious to me how weird and out of character it was for her in the first place when I didn’t think that originally
Anyway great video! I liked how sympathetic you were towards Varian and how you framed his turn as a result of his mental health I thought that was cool and I rarely hear it spoken about in that way
What's sadder is a Varian spinoff was proposed with art & everything but the big D dismissed it for some reason.
It could have been so cool
Yes, the spin-off was titled Varian and the Seven Kingdoms, which was unfortunately rejected due to the simple reason... that the producers thought that a series without Rapunzel as the main character was not going to be popular.
And that makes me so angry because Varian is literally the most popular character on this show, everyone would have loved to see more of him and the world they live in.
@@lautaroromero2964 yep! Varian getting a show would have been so good
I think it was very out of character for Rapunzel, I wish there was some sort of blockade between corona and lower Corona, caused by the blizzard maybe, that prevented Raps from getting to Varian, or perhaps the black rocks could have gotten so out of control that Raps can't get into lower corona, so it's only when Varian, maybe riding on the back of a mutant Ruddiger or by some other kind of mechanical/alchemic means gets into Corona and they can have the stealing flower episode ,then after that she can get to Varian to get the queen back via hot air balloon or something, I mean they play that cheat card later on in the series... what actually happens just makes me really dislike Raps which makes me sad because I love her character sooo much, but the way she treats Varian is just horrible, she goes on a bloody painting lesson after Varian gets kicked out into the blizzard that nearly killed her parents to meet his dead dad, like WTF RAPS!!!! anyways rant over 😅
How Varian’s character was handled in the series makes a lot of sense when you learn that Chris (TTS creator) essentially hated Varian and his fans. He would get mad whenever someone brought him up, and it got so bad that he got banned from the Discord server.

@@Narvalo_Lastar fr 😭 imagine hating a character you created, and anyways how could you possibly hate him sm?
In season one the episode that introduces those two criminal sisters (red and angry), when they are caught and taken to the castle king fredric literally says "I can't send children to jail" (something like that) and then at the end of the season varian gets sent to jail.
If varian actually got the spinoff he deserved it would be really cool to see him actually still hold a little resentment toward rapunzel and the others for all this stuff. (you guys should look into varian and the seven kingdoms because its really cool but sadly not green lit)
YESS I’D’VE ACTUALLY *LOVED* TO SEE THAT IN VAT7K
but tbh even if disney had made vat7k i doubt they’d do that since they couldn’t possibly show rapunzel in a bad light!
This show made me hate Rapunzel’s character because of how she betrayed Varian in season 1.
That would have been better
5:48 Don't forget that he was cell-mates with a grown man
Pretty gross
Don’t remind me…😣
Maybe Corona treats minors over the age of 12 as adults if they commit crimes?
@@Passions5555 does not change the fact fredrick is a tyrant for throwing a child in a cell with a grown man
@azureaquarius4487 Agreed.
@@Passions5555 I guess my overall problem is how the show and and some people will make so many excuses for Fredrick and act like he had no power in the situation completely forgetting that he is in fact a king with a lot of power

instead of wasting everyone's time threatening an orphan, keeping secrets, and pretending like the problem was not happening he could have just told people the truth and prepared them for the possibility of evacuating the kingdom, he moved the people of Old Corna but he also gave them false hope of the possibility of fixing their homes even though he had no intention to do so

Frederick and Nigel spread that rumor
They said so in the episode after "Queen for a Day"
@@DragonGoddess18 that makes some sense but I still find it a little weird
The writting and character dev at least gave us a killer musical number tho!
I know someone in the film industry and I think that in very early drafts of the series Varian was supposed to free ZhanTiri bc he thought she could save his dad
omg that’d be so cool
What
right, don't attack me for this, i'm not saying that varian wasn't done dirty, he 100% was, but.
in queen for a day, when rapunzel couldn't help him and he was thrown out of the palace and ran back home, when he found his dad, after probably hours of crying at the amber, in
"let me make you proud (reprise)", he says, "anybody who stands or has stood in my path, they're going to pay". so, even before rapunzel had ignored him and before he had even gone out and shunned by the coronans, he was planning his revenge on rapunzel. ofc, it's more likely that if rapunzel had helped him right after that instead of going to painting lessons, he wouldn't have enacted his revenge and just been glad of his dad being back, but it's still interesting to think that he was vengeful before anything else happened.
either way, they did varian DIRTY and the way he was thrown into prison with an manipulative adult who just so happens to also be a terrorist, and the way that rapunzel didn't think of him as a friend after he betrayed her, compared to cass, who she is convinced is still her friend, (even though cass did worse things by that point), and the way that cass got off with no actual punishment (it's possible she was exiled, but i don't really think so. i don't know. also, wouldn't crimes like that be punished with more than just exile?) and that varian, a scared, grieving child, was thrown into prison for a full year, really pisses me off just thinking about it.
rapunzel literally says, "i don't even know what he is anymore!" about varian when he'd put the truth serum into the cookies and when he was only trying to get the flower, but when cass literally kidnaps varian and attacks the rest of them, she says (after eugene was rightfully worried for rapunzel), "this is cassandra! not some monster!"
you see how biased the writing is?
also cass' motives, whilst not entirely ridiculous, are pretty stupid reasons for her to become a full on murderous villain. i mean, varian, whilst he probably should not have done what he did, he had just lost his only parent. his mother isn't in the show, and according to vat7k lore, she left when varian was a toddler, so varian only had his dad, and lost him too, and even though the amber was technically his fault, it wouldn't have happened if rapunzel hadn't asked him to investigate the rocks.
so yk thanks for coming to my ted talk i just hate how varian was done so dirty
The series really made rapunzel into a cow
i think its worth noting that he gets tossed into prison as in like, adult prison, like his cellmate is andrew and that guy is in his 30s or something, like no juvenile detention or anything? adult prison?? i know this is kind of an olden-days show but thats kinda bonkers
HOW DARE THEY?
this is literally what goes through my head in the middle of a maths test 😭

Plz make a video on Sofia the first it so underrated
Yes Sofia the First needs more love!
Or Elena of Avalor
Cassandra is the Karmie of Rapunzel.
4:46 I mean for a girl who’s been locked in a tower for nearly two decades, she probably CHOSE their mode of transportation
Yes he was done dirty
Varian was treated as a monster because his childish behavior led to his villain arc, and had to learn to move past it, which of course he had to, now that would be all fine and good if there wasn't a double standard to how the show outright coddles, excuses, and justifies Fred, rapunzel, and Cassandra childish behavior. at least Varian has something of a reason he's an actual child, Fred, rapunzel, and Cassandra are adults who honestly should know better.
Ngl I think she could have been very distracted especially cause of what was going on with her parents that could have led her to forget about varian so that could be a possibility
Of course he was done dirty!!! Where is his spin-off??? Varian and the 7 kingdom has a fandom but Disney didn't ise the opportunity
And the rest of Old Corona didn't say anything?
Ngl I was sad cause I love varian and cass but the writer's did them dirty especially cass its not really something that I could see se1 cass doing and varian like fredy boy said he would help him but I see no help anywhere it's just really sad cause I really like se1 and se2

She didn't turn good until after she lost because she was fully going through with it until Zhan Tiri took her victory over Rapunzel away
The big difference between how Rapunzel reacted to both Varian and Cassandra turning antagonistic toward her was that she never stopped treating Cassandra like a friend, while with Varian as soon as he turned on her, she gave up on him and treated him accordingly as her enemy.
At least Zhan tiri was a great villain.
Yee
Edit:
People like to think the King did not try to help Varian while Rapunzel was gone, but we do not know that for sure since we do not really go back to what is happening in Corona during season 2.
It could be that Frederic and/or Arianna tried to talk to Varian, but Varian was not ready accept help.
