What Makes Miraculous Fans Stay?

  • I think when you’re knee deep in the Miraculous fandom it’s easy to get swept up in all its flaws. After all there are quite a lot of them. And that can be therapeutic in a way, not feeling like you’re completely insane for questioning the writing of a children’s cartoon where a lot of other people agree with you. But there does seem to really be a lot of complaining, and I realise I am majorly guilty of this with my platform and sharing my thoughts on the smooth brain writing. So today I thought I’d touch some grass, take in a breath of fresh air and talk about what makes this show special and why we as fans really do love it so much. Enjoy.

For me, it is how unique it is: blending fantasy and superheroes, a combination that could and should have been done before but has only been a minor part of DC and Marvel. Furthermore, the villains are mostly demonically-possessed civilians rather than more conventional villains, quite unique. And the heroes wield personified primordial concepts of reality; very unique, not at all like most super-heroes. Plus, the villains are often actually challenging; rather than seeing an expert fighter with advanced technology and tons of resources and prep time beating on older, smaller, less-trained, poorer, and less-prepared antagonists, as DC's most popular example. The main pair are constantly dealing with often very unique and unpredictable threats; rather than a repeat roster of the usual suspects doing the same sorts of things repeatedly ad nauseam. Furthermore, the primary protagonist being a local goofy girl and her love interest trying too hard to be perfect but still being a very likable person beyond that is more interesting than a perfect future Queen from an unrealistically idealized place, or a straight-cut-by-the-books farmboy with absurd powers, or a completely overrated mental patient who never loses. So, for me, it is how unique it is. MLB is such its own thing and that is why I like it despite its many flaws. It should remain unique and never try to emulate other franchises. Another thing I like is the fact that Adrien does not let loss and misery control his life. He is such a strong person and it is a shame that they turned him into a construct of the peacock miraculous, as it removed most of his personal agency as well as most of the sincerity, depth, and complexities of his relationships. No matter who he lost, how much he was isolated to the point of imprisonment, or how much he was treated more as an object than a person by most people, he did not let that sour him or cause him to lose faith in the potentials of others. Even when most miraculous were lost, he never lost faith that they would still defeat his father in the end; even when Ladybug gave up, he never quit not for a second. I cannot get over how much I like him. He could submit himself to every woman in Paris; but instead commits himself fully to the only ones he has any genuine connection with (who are both the same person). Despite being raised by terrible people and only ever having anything resembling a friendship or sibling-esque bond with two dark souls, he still has a clear and true moral compass. This is how you know his truth: he has every reason to be like Chloe or Felix, but he is not. Adrien, it is not how you are alike...it is how you are NOT.

I've watched things go absolutely insane, for better or worse, so I might as well see how it all ends. Even if it's not satisfying, at least I can say my patience was rewarded.

Here is my reason before watching the video:
    -The show is ass
    -The writing is ass
    -The fandom is ass
    -The producers are ass
    -The story is ass
    -The finale is ass
So why do i keep watching it? Because of the concept and the characters. Since 2017ish, 12 years old me absolutely fell in love with the concept of highschool teenagers having romance drama and a superhero alternate life to deal with. The idea that an identity reveal one day would cause the ships to sail and the promise of father-son face off at the end made me glood to the screen (that's glued but written like gloob)
19 yo me knows that the promises were empty but i still absolutely adore the mlb concept and its just like, after so many years, i cant stop now

Then, I started watching it thanks to my best friend and at the beginning I really enjoyed it. After some months, I understood how many problems this show has got, but despite everything I’m fond of it. Not for the plot, but for the italian voice actors: they have dubbed a lot of cartoons and series that I used to love during my childhood and I hold their voices in my heart forever.
From my point of view the real problem in this show is the writing, especially Thomas Astruc, who’s so rude with every person on Twitter….

I also like the very unique soundtrack, and many of the songs in the movie. The theme of Cat Noir's Broken Heart perfectly captures the feeling of star-crossed-lovers and that theme that plays in Protection when the two are watching clouds together perfectly captures what young love feels like; especially considering that it was once Gabriel and Emilie's exact spot; hinting at the fact that Gabriel is an omen of what Marinette could be like if she lets love poison her. No other superhero franchise has such a distinctive and profound soundtrack; they usually center around action and tend to lack a more subtle or emotional soundtrack. I LOVED THE MUSIC THAT PLAYED THROUGHOUT RISK-STRIKEBACK! Risk's theme was downright chilling, as was the scene that played when Gabriel sent the akuma to him: the sun setting over Paris as the last classical akumatization was about to occur, it just oozed "End of an Era".

Yeah there is a lot to complain about and wish the series was kept to the original plan. The plan to aim it to young adults/teens & making it dark. Also how Felix was Marinette’s original love interest too. However I still watch it bc it could improve, enjoy hearing Cristina, Bryce, Faye & Andrew voicing the characters (especially watching it in French/European Spanish) and mostly to see what will happen next.
They do have great ideas to improve the writing such as the Paris Special & movie but it’s mostly from who is writing the script. Also I did make some friends from us watching the series & bonded over it

There are actually lot of reasons I’m still staying despite my violent disgust towards Marinette in the season 5 finale. First off. Adrien and Plagg’s friendship. That is a core part of the show. Also Feligami. Yes. They needed more time to develop as a ship. But it felt more satisfying than Adrienette’s ahem dragged conclusion. Also Duusu! I hate Reflekdoll so much! Especially because of Ladybug aka Lady Noire’s nasty and cruel attitude! But what made this episode worth that pain. Was Duusu! The kwami of emotions! Her voice in the English dub is so good! And fits her perfectly! I remember being such a nervous wreck because I was worried she’d sound bad. But no. They made her sound adorable and squeaky but not grating! And people say the miraculous English dub is bad. Ha! I don’t think so! What else? Oh! The Lukadrien moments. Those are great! And as much as I have a complicated relationship with Zoe’s character. I really hope she and Adrien get an episode or more together. Because though I ship them. I also would adore seeing them bond together as friends. Without Marinette getting in the way. Because not everything is about her. Even if people think otherwise. I’m also staying to see Marinette be held accountable for her actions in the season 5 finale of course. Because I’m pretty sure forgiving a terrorist is a very high crime of punishment. How high? I sadly don’t know. I also want Adrien to separate himself from Marinette. Because frankly. She’s done enough damage to him in my opinion.

I do think more people are interested in the potential ML’s premise and world offer than the actual execution. You can see this in the number of fan made works set in the ML universe or rewrites.
I think part of this is like the video says; the world ML has build is fun and colourful, it’s a world people want to imagine stories in.
But I think it’s also how new and fresh the world of ML is, so many other superhero stories at the moment are all parts of pre-existing universes, Marvel or DC being the biggest and most obvious. ML however is still new enough that the rules of the world, as well as what can and cannot happen within it, haven’t been set yet. It’s not quite a blank canvas but there’s still a freedom where people can create whatever stories they want without the foundation of what is already there setting restrictions on the creativity.
These factors make it joyful to imagine stories because there’s so much creative potential, which is why there’s also frustration with the actual show; instead of making the most of the creative potential they’ve insisted on a narrative status quo where progress is teased but immediately walked back. And it gets even more annoying when characters get their personalities changed to worse versions of themselves just to keep the narrative where it is for the sake of the “will they, won’t they” nonsense. There’s a freedom to do anything but instead the creators have chosen to do nothing

Plus the movie was actually pretty good and looking at the Paris special and season 6, they actually look like their improving their work.

i couldn't agree more!! i was going through my miraculous phase -again- until this week, i rewatched a lot of episodes from S1 and S2, and even some from S3 as well, and my heart was filled with joy, the giggles this show gave me in the early seasons! it all came back to me, and believe me, i go through this phase every once in a while and it never gets old. however, after S5 i got extremely burnt out from miraculous, i was so upset about everything, and it was sooo hard to get over it. and i made the mistake of rewatching some episodes from S5 just to remember what it was like, and oh boy, the discontent came flooding back to me, and i was immediately shut down on my little phase. so yeah, i relate 100% with everything said in this video. we come back for the love we once had, and we hope for it to change back to what it was before. i could spend hours talking about what i love about miraculous, but i could also spend hours talking about everything i hate about it.

Before I watch the video, here's my reasons:
    1. Most of the time, the story will be a letdown, but there are little moments where the show comes through, like that Marichat kiss? My goodness, that was one of the best scenes in the whole show...you know, before the whole, 'Oh yeah, our identities! We can't do this!' thing.
    2. The idea of a superhero couple never gets old, and them knowing who the other is would actually make it ten times more fun. Cat Blanc was a good episode because one could rescue the other or protect the other, or just have even funnier banter as they fought, and even though some writers are afraid to change or advance the concept of the story like that, that's what people want to see! The story advance! I swear, we'll still be interested even if they know each others' identities!
    3. I have to admit though, because the show never changes, it's easy to watch because you know for the most part, there won't be any surprises.
    4. We all pick certain ships for a reason, like superhero couple, high school sweethearts, superhero sweeps girl off her feet or superheroine sweeps guy off his feet, and people will WAIT for episodes of that ship no matter what. My favorite is Marichat, so I keep waiting for those episodes for sure.
    5. I really like the magic aspect of it and how they're ancient jewels and forces of the universe. I've never really seen a show like that and I feel like that makes it really special.
    6. I was really sad when Master Fu was booted because he added more mystery and lore that the other guardian dude can't replace. He was like a Gandalf and I liked that. 🤣
Edit: Honestly, I really loved your video! I like how you don't straight up hate on one character only, you're not just angry ranting, and I completely agree with your analysis. The love story and magic really does have so much to offer when they're not trying to backtrack or stretch it out. 🤣

Even though I haven’t touched the actual show in a little bit, I can say that the reason why it took me so long to stop watching was…that Miraculous, despite it’s flaws, had so much potential. It was pretty unique for its time and the premise was ambitious.
But potential can only go so far when the reality is so disappointing. And I had to realize that in order to break away from the actual show.
But I think for the fandom, it’s the lovesquare. People are stubborn and they wanted to see the Adrienette (and probably the other quadrants) through despite all the reasons not to want them canon. I still to this day believe that the lovesquare single handedly kept people locked in this show. Without it, it probably would have faded into obscurity by now. (I was never too into the lovesquare. And I gave up on it pretty early on in S3. I was more into the action, lord and characters which…fucking tanked-)
Overall, Miraculous is what I’d like to call a sandbox show. The premise (and some lore and character establishment) is good enough to make re-writes and original stories based off of them but when you actually take apart the show objectively, there’s not much there to really appreciate.

I agree, the lore is insanely good and interesting and the love square and the characters, especially the main characters are insanely good and the designs (even the season 6 animation looks pretty good), miraculous ladybug has had me in a chokehold since I was 10, I’m 19 and still in that chokehold and I’m not leaving cuz I’m emotionally attached and obsessed, my mom compared me to a football fanatic, which she’s not wrong cuz I 100% agree with her which makes since cuz I have ADHD so even tho I don’t have a lot of interests and hobbies, the ones I do have I’m obsessed with and emotionally attached to It for life, I started watching the show in the beginning of season 1, at that time the most recent episode at that time was Lady WiFi so I got caught up pretty quick, for specifics I found the show either March or April 2016 when I was in 5th grade cuz I remember I found the show after I moved to Houston (I didnt live there that long tho), I’m glad I found it early, not saying I wouldn’t bringe watch multiple seasons to get caught up but I’m just glad I only had to watch a few episodes to get caught up, I’m not leaving cuz I’m obsessed and also cuz all the good stuff in general about miraculous ladybug, even tho it has its moments (some insanely bad like the season 5 finale), but the good moments is what keeps me and also hoping for the show to improve so that too and it has improved a lot compared to season 1 (season 5 is my favorite season even tho the season 5 finale is the worst finale in miraculous), but the main thing is my obsession to miraculous ladybug, but I swear if it doesn’t end before I die I’m gonna be mad, like at the latest pls end in my 20s or 30s, I think 30s is more realistic so pls end in my 30s just not on a cliffhanger, I just don’t want to die and miraculous not even being done yet

It is a good show and can be enjoyable. But some choices of the writers can be bad. Leaving Adrien out of the end of the Agreste arc, not letting him be a main character, ruining Chloé's redemption arc! And making Gabriel a sympathetic villain, LAST MINUTE!

I’d say it’s mainly two things. 1. Sunk cost fallacy. Most people are this far in and think they’d lose more if they dipped out than if they had just stuck with it. So they stay. 2. Pathological addiction. This works on the majority of people whether they realize it or not and they’re all feeding it, constantly. Misery loves company. Here’s one little moment, dopamine rush. Three episodes later: here’s another little moment-dopamine rush. Five episodes later. Moment. Dopamine. Hook is in you, you’re addicted and you don’t even realize it. You give every excuse in the book: just one more episode, just a couple more. Next episode takes steps back. Dopamine crash. Now you’re desperate for the hit because you had anticipation and the excuses grow. Just a handful of episodes and you’ll get another dopamine hit, right? No. Well when we get to mid season there will be a dramatic turn and? No. it’ll be better next season and finally go somewhere interesting? The longer you hang on the harder it’s going to be to drop. Remember that ANYTHING can be an addiction- this teenage soap opera isn’t any different.

There’s a lot of fanservice in miraculous. For every bad episode there’s an episode where the writers give us something we’ve been craving. Like I’ll complain all about season 5’s finale, but the Marichat content that we got during Determination, Passion and Elation was amazing and honestly made me rate the season much higher than it probably deserves. Season 4 was objectively a good season. Season 3 had the really cool Introduction of new hero’s, which kept me hooked. Season 2 awnsered a lot of fan theories and season 1 has nostalgia. Every season of Miraculous has something to offer that kinda makes me forget about how bad the show gets.

I think i stick around mostly cause i think there is a lot of potential with the concept of Miraculous. Like the idea behind it is interesting and i think that the show could be amazing but it fails to actually fulfill that potential or do much with its characters and will make characters act a certain way that feels Out of Character for said character to make a plot work. Its something that i see in fanfic often where they need a character to be a certain way to fit the plot rather fit the plot to the character and it feels disappointing but you stick with it as other then that it is interesting and the concept is just that good.
I will also say that i was sticking it out with Miraculous as i really was drawn in by the Agreste family drama but now that thats resolved im not sure if there is much more to keep me in the fandom especially with how anti-climatic it was in the end.
Honestly my favorite thing about the Miraculous fandom is basically all the fans agree that the show is kinda shit, but we all still like it. its like watching a dumpster fire but damn if you can't look away from it and just chat about the whole thing with others also watching

Sort of off-topic, but I notice some similarities between Adrien and Drizzt Do'Urden (a dark elf hero of a very terribly written fantasy series): both are the only objectively good people from their families, both decide to become heroes, both are treated as sex objects and nothing else by most women despite their many talents, etc. Even the people in their origin tales are similar: Gabriel is analogous to Matron Malice (both are tyrants, Malice is Drizzt's mother), Emilie is analogous to Zaknafein (Drizzt's father was the only one in the family he ever really loved, much like Adrien and his mother), Chloe is basically like all three of Drizzt's sisters in one (Briza, Maya, and Vierna), Felix has similarities to Dinin (Drizzt's brother), and Natalie was the biggest supporter and most loyal confidante of someone who ultimately caused her death much like Patron Rissyn.

I would say that in some way Miraculous is so good it's bad and at the same time so bad it's good if that makes sense.
I started watching the show for its hilariousness and plot which over time deteriorated when they seem to focus more on just the Love Square and Battles than plot and character development but I've stuck around for it.
I'll admit I was ready to quit watching the show when the romantic factor between Marinette and Adrien was getting too much and became all the episodes ever focused on besides the battles and not development in plot which led to a lot of continuity errors in plot and some annoying twists that made no sense.
However, the show still had some of its humor and I have been very curious to see how far it goes with the secret identities thing and the villain's comeuppance.
Honestly, in regards to Miraculous, I'd say the Movie told in Jeremy Zag's perspective handled all the plot factors nicely especially with the final battle between Adrien and Gabriel which should've happened in the show but didn't and the identity reveal.
So in a way my biggest curiosities were solved but I still want to see where this goes with the show's plot even though I know there will be MANY times it will annoy me with how its plot is handled but I love it either way.
I'd also say that Fanfiction and Fanart is one of the factors that still keeps me hooked on the show as I love the creativity in fans as they reimagine and retell the show in amazing ways that has me going back to the show to wonder how it could have been if it happened that way.
Although, I wouldn't exactly turn to Miraculous as a way to teach kids about curbing toxic traits as they didn't quite confront Marinette's stalking tendencies to stop it but rather gave an excuse to justify it or rather the factor of questionable trust in friends who, even if they've known for so long, somehow fall for the stupidest lies to ever be spoken against you that can easily be debunked but they still believe it and never truly apologize for that.
Anyways, Miraculous is both good and bad in its own way and the curiosity of seeing how far the plot will go is what has me sticking around now.

I love the show but the only thing I hate about the show is that they made a 14 years old girl into a stalker. Marinette deserves better. She is my favourite character.

This is nonsense. Marinette is not a stalker. I advise you to look up the definition of a stalker.

@@maximilianschussler8126she is one before they toned her character down in s4 and 5. She literally broke in Adrien house and traveled to a different state/country to follow him. Her back story was an explanation but it is just said. Even Mari stan like myself and many others know marinette was a stalker in the show.

Hey at least the writers toned her down in S4 and 5. Where she learned from her mistakes and she stopped stalking adrien. And finally they are together now.

@@IceyWolftb I seriously believe you don't know what a stalker actually is. Please look up the definition and criteria of "stalking" and compare both to Marinette's actions. She has never been a stalker in the entire show (being obsessed doesn't have to be connected with stalking). She "trespassed" into Adrien's room; "breaking into" is a different criminal offense. However, both terms ain't considered stalking. Travelling to another state or country at the same time as your friend or crush does is completely legal and not stalking either. Most of the fandom wrongfully think that Marinette would be a stalker, but since neither the official definition nor any points of the criteria of the crime of stalking are matching with any of her actions or her behaviour, she simply can't be a stalker. It's not like stalking would be an opinion. And I'm not saying any of this because I'm trying "defend" or "protect" Marinette or her actions. I'm just trying to explain that the term "stalking" ain't appropriate to describe her behaviour.

She’s not a stalker…but she’s still a creep. There’s more to say about her being a terrible partner to Chat as Ladybug though.
