  • In the Finishing Sequence of Ashtanga Yoga, we learn Urdhva Dhanurasana, a pretty challenging backbend that is inaccessible to many of us, especially for the first few months of practice.
Just trying and failing repetitively will work for most people eventually, and bridge pose is a reasonable alternative for a while. But if there's a specific reason this pose is not working for you (e.g. a wrist or a shoulder injury) then I want to offer you some ideas on what you could do instead.
I'll talk you through 3 backbends you can do in place of Urdhva Dhanurasana, whilst sticking to the count of the Finishing Sequence of Ashtanga Yoga! These are wonderful postures for strengthening the back.
As always, let me know in the comments if you have any questions.

I love the first sentence in the description where you say that Urdhva Dhanurasana is inaccessible to many of us, especially in the first months of practice. In my case the months were years and I'm so happy to have got there eventually, even if the pose is still hard for me. I do occasionally incorporate your three alternative backbends as part of my warm up for Urdhva Dhanurasana when doing the pose outside the practice. I'm never sure though whether doing Urdhva Dhanurasana itself is the most effective back strengthener and I should concentrate my warm-up time for it more on shoulders (including lats and pecs) and hip flexors rather than on preparatory back strengtheners.
