  • Sexualized media without representation and education has tremendous negative effects. From porn addiction to dehumanization of others, these effects can be devastating, especially for young people.
    (*Mature subject matter)
Ande is a sophomore at the Miami Valley School and has lived in Ohio for the past nine years. When she's not taking part in various clubs or extracurricular activities (or studying) she's usually either teaching an art class to elementary students in downtown Dayton, hanging out with her friends and family, or nerding out over Disney movies with anyone who will listen. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

As a man. I'm eternally grateful to the girls that are calling these things out so that it can be addressed. If nothing is said, then we wouldn't pay attention to it. It's taking days, but I'm slowly getting around to being a better person and I apologize for all those who are affected by our sexualization of you ladies who never asked to be sexualized in the first place.

I think a lot of people are coming to this conclusion naturally. The overton window has gone too far one way. Social movements get co-opted and make wrong turns all the time, but in time I think we will keep moving towards a better society, even with regressions like this.
It's just important to keep talking.

She is beautiful, but I feel profoundly sorry for what happened to her in childhood. She needs a lot of therapy, love and support to fully overcome whatever residual pain she still has from the abuse.
She has grown a lot from the experience, but she is definitely still scarred. Her crying at the end and her overall downcast demeanor, makes that so clear.
I thank her and the team at TEDx for allowing her to express herself. That in itself is healing and empowering for survivors of any kind of abuse.
    Very moving presentation ❤

    Do not get confused people.
Young ones do bad because they are
    1. Inexperienced
    2. Insensitive hearts.
Take ownership of your choices. Throw off inexperience, and think of what your parents think, think of what those who love you want for you. STOP putting your selfish desires first. Turn around, change before your heart is too hard to listen.

It may be that blaming men is one of the many things that is factually true. But as of this moment, it is worse than that. If women have accepted the image of how they should be, and how they can use their power to freely reject, but point the fault at men saying, it's your responsibility to not look at me, then, they have accepted defeated. Maybe nature has taken its rightful course. Maybe eugenics, evolution is an inevitable consequence of the times we live in. But as humans, who are gifted with reason, ought to do much more. Maybe as a whole, not every race, tribe is on that level yet. But we must make a difference, to freely give love and grow insight. Scarcity is a cancerous tumor.

Sexualization of women is empowerment. As much they get sexualized men will enjoy that and it will be empowerment for women. Sexualization of women in media is good for men. That's why as a male I love feminism. Feminism allows sexualization of women in media.

bit of a mess? have you went through what she went through to complain about her speech being a "mess"? she's still damaged from the experience! and it's emotionally overwhelming for her to talk about it in the first place, it's obvious with the way she broke into tears at the end. deciding to speak up about it in the first place is in and of itself enough. I thought the speech was more than perfect as well, in such circumstances.
