  • Are you wasting paddle energy?

Our good friend and surf paddle technique expert Rob Case @RobCaseXSWIM conducted an experiment comparing the efficiency and propulsion of a vertical hand and a cupped hand when paddling.

In surfing, propulsion is achieved by applying force backward, as dictated by the third law of motion. Our hand, a key component of the paddling blade, plays a significant role in this process. Positioned strategically, the hand maximizes the blade’s surface area, ensuring efficient and powerful paddle strokes. Maintaining the right-hand position is crucial for optimizing propulsion.

    Vertical/Straight Hand:
    - Paddle Blade Length: 100%
    - Total Propulsion: 100%

    Cupped Hand:
    - Total Paddle Blade Length: 93%
    - Total Hand Length: 78%
    - Total Propulsion: 85% (as the hand provides an average of 67% of the total propulsion)

    Cupped Hand + Curved Wrist:
    - Total Paddle Blade Length: 82%
    - Total Hand Length: 47%
    - Total Propulsion: 65% (as the hand provides an average of 67% of the total propulsion)

Cupping the hand reduces blade length and efficiency. Stick to a straight hand and wrist for optimal surface length and speed.

You mean to tell me I've been paddling wrong for 30 years?😳
Going to try the vertical hand now and see how it goes. Thanks for the tip!
