I’m pretty convinced that Patrick Bartley is not from our present time. He’s straight up a time traveler from the 40s who’s come to teach jazz musicians how to solo again! Absolutely phenomenal playing!

Totally. Patrick is unbelievable in that unlike most very famous alto players throughout history, he doesn’t have one single niche. You could place him in front of anything and he can crush. His level of versatility is so impressive because it exists as more than a level of physical technical expression. He approaches each style with a unique reverence, enthusiasm, and absolute passion. Truly an inspiration!

Great transcription of a (typically) sublime solo. The world needs to put a Kickstarter together to get Patrick and Baptiste Herbin on the stage at the same time.

2:51 him choosing to play an F (Ab concert) instead of an F# (A) to stay grounded and signal where he was going next was that next level forethought that teaches a man things

At 2:11 Patrick goes up then Emmet goes down. Such a great moment.
Also 2:25 when Patrick goes down Emmet up at the same time. Emmet heard the moment too.

This solo just blows me away. What strikes me is that its one of the best solos I've heard, and also one of the simplest! Also, it's so so melodic, and he uses space and motifs so masterfully, will definitely keep coming back to this as a reminder of what makes a great solo!

Mr. Bartley is an absolute beast. He has class that I haven't heard on the horn from any living player. I feel like I can learn as much from this transcription as I would from the bird book. Props, and thanks for posting.
Edit: Dare I invoke Cannonball? I feel like I'm hearing something akin to when he's recorded playing with Nat.

I’ve met Patrick before, after a gig in Tokyo (before his move) in just before COVID struck in 2020.
His solos are jaw dropping; it’s melodic and him really singing it through sax. I got a degree in jazz but I think a good amount of us just want to flex on our knowledge of scales and arpeggiating runs, but Patrick keeps it simple and and rhythmical. This solo just proves his greatness.
