I got a tour of the Buffet Crampon factory in '74. I was in the 8th grade at the American School of Paris, and our band teacher arranged a visit. They manufacture clarinets, but also saxophones and other woodwinds; oboes, bassoons, and english horns. It was fascinating. There were no computer controlled machines drilling the screw holes, mounting holes etc. back then. It was very manual. The factory was surprisingly quiet considering all the drills, wood borers and brass hammering. The craftmen were true artisans. They were very focused on every aspect of the process. It left a lasting impression.
they should show this video to band students so they can see how hard it was to make their instruments. i see a lot of students mistreat their instruments nowadays.
I agree! I've seen so many students, middle and high school students treat their woodwind instruments (and brass instruments too) with little to no respect at all, but a lot of that is due to the little to no respect they show their parents, the ones that purchased it for them in the first place and have to force their child to practice frequently like the band director asked them to do. Yes, I know how annoyed parents get listening to their child make the sounds that beginning band students make on a new instrument that they've never blown on before or just have no experience on playing!
I have one of these and have played on the same one one now for about 50 years. Still plays wonderfully. Watching this makes me want a new one. Maybe in my next life.
I love playing my clarinet. I have been playing it for 5 years now and hopefully will continue. I especially love the reeds made by Buffet. No wonder the clarinets these days aren't cheap haha. It's amazing how much time they put in into making just one clarinet
While viewing this mesmerizing video I began to think about the times when such precision technology and tools were not available and still those great artists created such masterpieces that remain unparalleled to this day.
Thank you for this tour. I was able to go to the factory in the 1970 s and saw the care and attention that goes into the production I have played a pair of Buffets since 1970s recommended by the late, great Dame Thea King. God bless you all. Bill. Uk 🎶🎶
I am wishing them, who are involved in the work of clarinet making. They are very concentrated to make every part making of the instrument. God bless them. Thanks with respect. I am from India.
When I was I sixth grade and our band director said we would have to build our instrument, I thought he meant literally and now I see why that ISNT the case lmao
That is the coolest thing ever!! I've been holding my clarinet this whole time haha yea buddie! Thunbs up for the clarinets!! Woooooo! I wanna work at that place!
I'm sure it's the B flat version. The Bassette is easily recognized, being 25% longer. Very interesting! I've played clarinet for 40 years and had a good idea about how they're made, but had never seen the process before. Thank you.
Incredible video! It really makes a person appreciate the level of craftsmanship that goes into making an instrument of this caliber. Buffet clarinets are one of the best and most sought after instruments by clarinetists. It is no wonder that they are so expensive!
I am from India. I am watching this video again and again because veri precise and decisive works which related to make clarinet. Excellence character beloned to the clarinet making. God bless the engineers, machanics all members of factory. Thanks
Shout out to all the craftsman in this video, where "Real music" is created in factories like this one, without which , there would be no live performances
Это один самых лучших вообще кларнетов. Очень тёплый и бархатный звук, в руках лежит замечательно, да и очень, если можно так сказать, благодарный за старания.
Hi from Paris ! Moï RUSSKI izik niè karacho. Please can you translate in french or in german. May be in english , although my english in not so good Thanks.
nikolas macalma, the reason they do that nowadays, is because they want to hide away the imperfections of the wood. Unfortunately, the wood used to make clarinets these days is not only not as good as it used to be, but is also aged with much less time, which also uses chemicals to speed the process. This is the unfortunate truth about supply and demand with mass production.
Idk Ok you are NEVER supposed to wash a clarinet. Only polish the metal parts and swab the inside to clean out the layer of spit but never dunk it in water.
Rockington TheThird, a lot of people prefer the big "Buffet Sound" that the R13 is known for, including myself. However, newer instruments, including the R13, have moved away from this, and have become more like Selmer Paris, with regard to wall thickness and the such. This creates a very dark sound, which isn't necessarily bad, but people like me and others enjoy the vast overtones that can be found in older clarinets, where the walls were not only not as thick, but the wood was more porous.
I play both the bass and normal Bb clarinets for high school marching and concert bands and man, they look good and I wished I can play this brand of clarients
I've played bass clarinet and clarinet for 3 years now, and I can confidently say this is one of the most satisfying things I've ever watched. This is just Clarinetist p*rn.
Watching those levers and rods go in does my head in. Reminds me chillingly of the time when one of mine fell out during an important solo in a concert. The first hint I got that it was going was difficulty in making certain notes speak. Then when I tried harder just a loud shriek. My clarinet was a LeBlanc. We all have had our bad moments I guess.
I have a good old Buffet Crampon B12 model and it's been a fantastic instrument. Nothing against Yamaha, Bundy, Vito, or Selmer but I feel lucky to have a Buffet Crampon. I don't know where life would have taken me had I not played clarinet.
very pleased with my B12 never thought a mouthpiece would make such a difference I bought a mouthpiece on ebay originaly from a R13 what an improvement wish I could afford the rest of the R13 must be magnifisent !!
@zakyboi123 compared to most orchestral instruments, the clarinet is considerably cheaper. like u have to spend at least 6000 on an oboe, 10000 english horn, 3000-50000 flute, 4500 piccolo, 16000 bassoon, 10000 violin, 15k-30k cello, and etc.
I work at a music store and got to do a complete overhaul on one of these a few weeks ago, it was completely tarnished and looked like complete hell but when it was finished it looked brand new, I was damn proud of myself except ironically I don't even know how to play clarinet xD
Ok I play clarinet and I love watching how they're made but. Slow videos like this... I actually wanted to see how it was made and and a actual tour of the factory.
beautiful video, but having learnt it, I still prefer german system. in general, which system you play, the clarinet for me is the most beautiful instrument of all!
I've seen a documentary about Tanzania where Buffet crampon sourced their wood from the Mpingo tree . In 1980s Buffet crampon noticed that the wood turning a bell had a habit of exploding while under pressure during machining there was alot of scrappage and they couldn't understand why the wood exploding and they found out the reason over there in Tanzania tribesmen set fires on there land and this damages the young Mpingo trees so when they reach maturity there is a flaw in the wood so bell making was difficult and losing 20 percent of stock .
I'll never look at my (1963) R-13 the same way again. Beautiful! That said, I guess it took a great deal more skill back in the 60s to manage those lathes without computers. On second thought, they may have had some kind of analog system that achieved the same effect. Hmmm...I wonder.
Humm que instrumento muito bom tenho desejo de ter um clarinete desse Buffet um preto mas vou orar a meu Deus pra que um dia prepara para mim ,si for a vontade do senhor meu Deus..

yeah ive seen flutes having a dent in the head joint within the year they recieve the instrument
ok to be fair this is an multi thousand instrument compared to the crappy 300 dollar clarinets
Those cheap school ones are factory made. Buffets costs upwards to 10k
I have one of these and have played on the same one one now for about 50 years. Still plays wonderfully. Watching this makes me want a new one. Maybe in my next life.
Your next life
I try to watch this once in a while...just so that I can remind myself how precious my clarinet is :)
I love playing my clarinet. I have been playing it for 5 years now and hopefully will continue. I especially love the reeds made by Buffet. No wonder the clarinets these days aren't cheap haha. It's amazing how much time they put in into making just one clarinet

これからも大切に使おう。

I particularly appreciate Buffet's professionalism and attention to detail.

I'd like to see a clarinet made by hand from the start to finish like they would've in the 1700 or 1800s. That would be really cool.
I read somewhere that there was a clarinet maker in 1701 that wanted to record his own craftsmanship but he didn't know anyone with a VIDEO CAMERA! 😊

I didn't understand the strangely
This is the correct version of the Mozart Concerto played on the basset clarinet! LOVE IT!
what recording is this? do you know the performer?
When I was I sixth grade and our band director said we would have to build our instrument, I thought he meant literally and now I see why that ISNT the case lmao

just stunning clarinet playing. I'm so glad people still care about talent!

I was so excited when I got my first Buffet.
I was, too! And it is a humble B10... but I’m in love with it nevertheless.
@@03Venture I'm craving to buy one right now I don't know what mine is made of but it sure isn't beautiful wood
I’m in love!!!!!! My clarinet is sooo old and has been in my family for who knows how long. Sadly, time is started to catch up with it.
Are you still playing it? And keeping it repaired

Really enjoyed this video Beautiful and precision works.👌🎉
Thank you and love you all 😊
I'm using the Buffet R-13 it's a great instrument!
I wish they wouldn't paint it black and let the natural beauty of the wood grains and textures give each clarinet character...
nikolas macalma, the reason they do that nowadays, is because they want to hide away the imperfections of the wood. Unfortunately, the wood used to make clarinets these days is not only not as good as it used to be, but is also aged with much less time, which also uses chemicals to speed the process.

I washed mines and then the paint came off

Carla Lopez why
Im in 8th grade and I have a plastic clarinet at the moment...
Getting a WOOD clarinet in 9th grade! I'm so excited :)
I hope you’ve really enjoyed that instrument all these years!
Dang you 1 second you were in 8 grade and now you’re a grown man with a wife and kids
Buffet definitely makes the best clarinets on the market today. I have an E11 and love the rich tone and crisp articulation it gives
I´m Clarinet teacher and Clarinet player and I play with buffet vintage in Bb and A. Amazing clarinets!!
This is eye opening!
Gives you a greater appreciation for how complex those instruments are

Very sincere works in the world, the making clarinet. I am from India. Thanks
I am also a clarinet player and I own a E11 and it works beautiful even though it took some adjusting at first since it was a new model Made in France
Mozart really knows how to put clarinet on his concertos.. Glad for the mozart clarinet concertto on behind.. 💜
I have a 1981 evette schaeffer student clarinet, solid wood and silver keys. plays beautifully and sounds amazing
Patrick Meyer I use a Buffet E-11, not the best but i could upgrade to a R-13 soon!
Why does everyone else play on a buffet....... all I have is Henri Selmer Paris

That was OUT STANDING! Thanks for the offering.
I am really Motivated and encouraged. God bless all of you
I play on B clarinet Amati (made in Czech republic), but I want Buffet's Eflat clarinet. It's amazing :) Maybe somewhere in future...
Buffet Crampon, the sweetest clarinet even made! Long live!😍👍
I play both the bass and normal Bb clarinets for high school marching and concert bands and man, they look good and I wished I can play this brand of clarients
its amazing :) I have a R13 Prestige clarinet and now I know how it was made!

Daddy-O
wow, such a work of art. no wonder these instruments are so expensive! thank you for sharing!
Just realized this is my exact Clarinet.
I play on the RC Prestige. The craftsmanship of all buffet clarinets is simply amazing!! I wouldn't choose any other clarinet!!

Saving my pennies for a Basset Horn.
I have a composite (half plastic, half grenadilla wood). I'm in grade school. They look and sound so beautiful.

@Moragomi that's cool that y'all passed it down! this is only my 2nd year playing it though, when i bought it was used for 1 year
Just a quick piece of trivia, the music in the background is the Clarinet Concerto by Mozart. It's a beautiful piece, one of his last completed works.
Have a wooden Bb Buffet clarinet and it sounds gorgeous
mmmm i wish i had a buffet clarinet...but honestly, i have a vintage wooden bundy clarinet and it works beautifully....
Look on eBay. I've gotten two used R13's that way. Last one was a steal.

I saved a Buffet from an abandoned house. Looks like it hadn't been touched in at least 10 years. Glad I found it!
I'll never look at my (1963) R-13 the same way again. Beautiful! That said, I guess it took a great deal more skill back in the 60s to manage those lathes without computers. On second thought, they may have had some kind of analog system that achieved the same effect. Hmmm...I wonder.

Seriously though, the background music, where can I get the sheet music? 🙏
