Roy often doesn't get his due as a fantastic arranger! I really dig this chart on "La Puerta." The recording is a rehearsal with the Dizzy Gillespie All Star band in 2008. Rehearsal recordings often give different insight in some ways than gig recordings(check out the full video link below). You'll spot quite a few heavy hitters in this band if you look closely! How did you get your Yamaha to get the smoky color?
You'll probably want a hard rubber piece... transcribing Lester Young would be my best piece of advice for that. Check out "Lady Be Good." I also really dig his album with Teddy Wilson
