Yup, just started working on mine! Went with the optishot and building my own mat, used heavy duty drop sheet for a screen ($30) as opposed to $280. Found a projector on Amazon for $85 lightning deal. It's a work in progress, but keeping me busy in all of this! Optishot, the website itself, had a 25% off coupon to save $100 on it, which was helpful.
jbuchanan887 it’s not great tbh - already have a couple of holes so I added a backup moving blanket. Good thing is the moving blanket is dark, so the picture is a little better. I bought carabiners to clip everything into my lag screws so i can take it down quickly if I have to. Hopefully the backup works!
As an optishot owner it's actually pretty accurate when you calibrate your clubs properly! I'm in Southern Ontario so I'm using it 4-5 months of the year, plus great selection of courses built in ( tpc Scottsdale, Torrey pines black & white, barseback & much more it's like 15 good courses ) lots of fun with your mates!

Great set up! Also from WI. Fox Valley area! Looking to set something up like this, was wondering after a few years do you think its worth it? Will it actually help your shot or hurt it? Thanks in advance man.
You actually did it for 1300. Forgot to include cost of optishot. Optishot 300, matt for opti shot 300, projector 300, impact screen 280 then everything else
Walter Bluhm you forgot the 50-300$ cost for mat and went with highest price... and the $300 stand-alone is the one optishot has. Total is $858.95 when I did it.
I am trying to create the same setup in my heated garage. What aspect ratio are you using on the projector? What display setting are you using on your PC? I am not able to get the projected image to fill up the screen, I am only able to get the top 4 feet with the image. Are there any settings in the OptiShot software to adjust image size? Thanks, great video and setup.
Awesome set up and video. I have an Optishot currently set up in my garage with a temporary net system (borrowing from a friend), but am looking at options for installing an impact screen like this. How is the screen attached to the ceiling? It looks like it is just attached to a 2x4 and mounted to ceiling... Wondering if you could take this hanging screen approach and using hooks on the ceiling to store screen when not in use
I was having a hard time following how you the impact screen was suspended at the bottom. I understand you put a black PVC pipe at the bottom. I was wondering if you could send me pictures or elaborate on that a little more. Great video..I plan to copy your setup. Thanks.
Basically, I just cradled the PVC in the bottom of the impact screen. The bottom end of the impact screen that is cradled under the PVC, gets strung up with rope or cord to the ceiling so it's suspended. It essentially enables it to just barely hang off the ground, and is adjustable. Hope that helps!
Love the setup! Nice and compact. I've got a similar setup in my garage with the optishot. What is the pad that you put under the grass surrounding the Optishot? I need to raise my standing area so that it's more level..
Thanks! I bought the Optishot 4x5 ft hitting mat which has the cutout for the sensor already made. It's nice and level but costs $300, you could probably whip something up that costs less or otherwise bite the bullet and do what I did. Hope that helps! The grass turf below the hitting mat is just cheap turf at Menards or your local big box hardware store
It does, yes. I wouldn't say extremely well, but it works well. The ball left/right flights are picked up by the club head being open or closed at impact and how the sensors read it. Some times it's exaggerated but usually if you're lighting is right it works well. Hope this is helpful
GREAT VIDEO! Thank you for posting this. QUESTION ABOUT LIGHTING: you have two lamps over the sensors, one over the top. Curious why you configured it this way? Did you try it different ways and this gave you best readings? Or was this suggested to you by another source?? Thanks again for taking the time to video this. Great job.
Thank you! Yes, LED or incandescent light works best and doesn't interfere with the sensors. Fluorescent is not recommended. These are two $10 lights that I use and it works well. Just make sure they are as close to directly over the club head as possible because the intent of the lights are to make the sensors detect your club more effectively (so you'll want to minimize the shadow). Try to significantly minimize other light sources. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!!
It's not 100% comparable to the course but it absolutely helps with real time data, feedback and helps you keep your swing polished during winter. Repition is crucial!
I bought an optishot 2 and really worked on my swing over the winter and i went from a 24 handicap down to a 8. I will say i started to golf with a better partner and joined a different league but this was my fourth season playing golf. It was great for me to be able to keep my swing going through the winter but also with seeing how i can affect the club head face and the swing path.
Man, that's awesome! My wife is undergoing her 3rd bout of cancer (lymphoma), and as her obvious caregiver, I have to be here with her 24/7 for 30 days. She can't go to a golf course due to the pesticides after her T-Cell transplant, so I am highly considering building a simulator in the home gym we built at our house. It's 15' x 10' on the outside, so figure a usable 14' x 9' max. Unfortunately, the roof is pitched, so it is 12' high at the highest point, down to I think 8' high. Do you think I have enough room to set something like you have up in that space?
Hey Tres, I'm sorry to hear this. It'd be great if you could get a set up for her, 9 ft ceilings clear a full driver driver for a 6' 2" person, so I'd recommend 9 ft. You don't need a ton of space for this as long as you can comfortably swing the club Hope this helps! Take care.
I'd like to know this too! I am setting mine up, currently about 9' from the screen, but I am wondering if that's too far and I need to move in. He did say he has 6x8 mats down and I believe they are sideways, so I'm going to say around 7 - 8 feet?
I bet when you were making this video you didn't expect so many film critics to come out lol that's an awesome set up man good job, I'm wondering about the Optishot if it resembles your real gameplay, I have a big draw so will it really show that I'm playing a big draw, just wondering about the ball flight if it resembles real life flight?
Thanks! I would say yes, it does resemble real game play. However, it's not perfect nor exact so there will be some margin for error. Like 5-15 yards for distance and some variation in ball shape. The accuracy is also highly reliant on the sensors picking up your club head well. An overhead halogen or LED light to help reduce shadow, also silver/chrome/steel club head bottoms work best because black/gray don't pick up as well on the sensors. Hope that helps!
@@mwwiseone it does thank you so much for getting back with me. I think this is the way I'm going to go to start out with, setting up something like the sky track is just a lot of expense when you don't know how much you'll actually be able to use it.

Hello sir..i am also a cheesehead and am in the process of making a setup very similar to yours..good job bye the way. The optishot2 I understand you need the internet to download and upgrades but it can run without the internet..is that correct?? Thank you and keep swinging brother!!
Hey man I’m trying to build the same exact thing in the garage, just wondering the distance from the hitting screen and also the projector ratio and how far the projector is mounted from the screen. I’ve read a lot about being careful not to mess that up because you can sometimes see your shadow. I appreciate it man.
jbuchanan887 hey man, I didn’t do the video but I just built one myself. My projector is about 9 feet from the screen. The more expensive projectors have digital zoom which allows you to adjust size no matter where you place it. Mine doesn’t really have this, but it worked. My hitting mat is about 1 foot in front of the projector. Hope this helps you!
JustinMaul16 me too man me too. I am so afraid of spending $300 on the optishot 2 and being disappointed and then spending another $2000 on the skytrak. Been trying to find the comparison about whether the extra $1700 is worth it or not, but not finding anything concrete.
I suppose I could get away with just a net and no projector or hitting mat right? I mean what's displayed on your hitting mat is being displayed on the PC as well correct?
What type of net did you get from Menards I cannot find that at my local Menards was wondering what section did you get it from or part number if you still have that
Honestly as long as you have 9 ft ceiling to clear swing path (unless you're super tall), you can tailor to your size needs. Big or small, it's all pretty workable with this type of setup
@@loicdesroches9441Yeah an ad for Trackman keeps popping up in my recommended and it says from $25,000 and I'm like wtf?? Won't be buying one of them for that price. It'd wanna have a bloody good putt sim at that price. I'd want a robot arm that tees the ball up for me or something for that kinda money lol.... I've seen a few channels (Rick Sheils and Peter Finch) that use it but still haven't seen anyone use it for putting. lol
How tall are you? I am thinking of doing this in my garage, and my ceiling is 9' as well, but my concern is hitting the ceiling with my club on follow through. I'm only 5'10.
I'm not familiar with short throw, but it's a 300 dollar projector from Amazon. Minimum 3000 lumens I would say, you want key stone feature and zoom for getting it lined up and squared. But most decent projectors have those features included the ability to be inverted for ceiling installation. Hope that helps
I bought an optishot2 last year and love it. But, I didn't play most of the winter because it was too cold in my garage. Michigan winters. How do you keep your garage warm enough to play in the winter?
Just got one, also in MI. Without insulation in the garage the only hope is going to be 1 or 2 torpedo heaters. Looks like this guy has a unit heater you can see at 0:25
I can honestly say all of the above, just because there is a lot of direct feedback with metrics that help your game. And of course the repetition of practice will only help
How tall is the celing??? I want to do something similar and am trying to use all clubs so it would have to clear my driver dont want to hit anything!!!!
Tee to screen is 8.5 feet. Projector to screen is 14 feet. Also recommend to have 18 in to 2 ft ideally behind the screen to ensure the screen has enough room to recoil when hitting driver and longer irons.
Thanks for posting. I too live in WI and agree....very long winters and I think this might be enough to get me through them. Would you change anything? I've heard that maybe 1 our 10 drives gives a credulous length. Have you had any problems with this?
Hey! Happy to help. Nice, I'm in the Fox Cities. I honestly wouldn't change the setup at all. However, there was some thought process beforehand to try and get it right the first time. It really depends on if your driver has a silver sole or not (versus black or gray). It reflects the chrome/silver/stainless finish the best on the lasers. You can always put reflective tape on the bottom but that can be hit/miss with results. Lighting should also be directly above the lasers to eliminate any side shadows (I believe I forgot to mention this in the video). Use incandescent light not fluorescent. LED is okay. It shouldn't be more than 10-15 yards off in distance.
He obviously can’t add. 300 for the projector, 300 mat, 300 impact screen, 800 optishot. 50 net, 30 for ball holder, 50 for the green area. So you can make this for under 2500.
the optishot is $300 and he said that he bought a $300 mat thats not needed and you can get for much less in the video he even says he goes over 1k but tells us how to stay below it
You calibrate each one by dragging the club square over the sensors 5 times, then open 5 times, then closed 5 times (it's a bit excruciating, honestly - but only have to do it once). You can put multiple clubs sets in there and save them.
As long as you have enough space to swing on either side of the sensor, it's not a problem at all. I wouldn't recommend switching it around each shot, the settings on Optishot specify if players are LH or RH. So its really just more of a space issue, hopefully not for you!
Thank you so much for this extremely helpful comment. I definitely don't understand the difference between landscape and portrait, and definitely didn't use portrait intentionally to ensure you all could see the top of the screen. I don't know where I went wrong but have you to thank for this enlightening information. And none of this was sarcastic at all. I'll make sure the next video is in landscape so you can't see anything and important parts of the screen and setup are cutoff.
It is designed pretty well to take repetitive irons hits. We use it frequently and it has held it's integrity. They are embedded below the turf so it's built to take normal and fat iron shots. Hope this helps

Hey Gregg! Thanks. Correct, you once it is updated you can run it without internet. Good luck!!
@@mwwiseone
Thank you very much sir!!!!
Do you have a link to the screen and projector?
Great job! Quick question... how did you attach the impact screen to the furring strips on the ceiling?
There are holes/grommets in the screen edge so you can screw it into the wood thru those holes using screws or lag screws and washers. Hope this helps
Hi do you use a tee for every club.
Sweet Set up bro!! How far from the screen is the mat?
9 ft from center of hitting mat to impact screen
Nice setup! did you consider the upgraded turf for the optishot? I've heard good things about it.
Awesome! How do you like the optishot 2? Accurate? I’m debating between this or spending more on the skytrax.
JustinMaul16 me too man me too. I am so afraid of spending $300 on the optishot 2 and being disappointed and then spending another $2000 on the skytrak. Been trying to find the comparison about whether the extra $1700 is worth it or not, but not finding anything concrete.
Drake Nerveza THANK YOU. Exactly the info I needed! Thanks for taking the time to offer great advice
Thanks for the input! I don't have SkyTrax experience so I'll defer to the thread
Step one: have high enough ceilings
Yessir, 9 ft
if you have low ceinings the Phigolf system might get you by.
I have "just" enough linear room in my garage but the ceiling is only 8 ft tall...
I suppose I could get away with just a net and no projector or hitting mat right? I mean what's displayed on your hitting mat is being displayed on the PC as well correct?
projector or pc, yes
thanks for the video! wondering how tall you are and how tall your ceiling height is? do you have trouble hitting driver or any other clubs?? thanks!
Driver must hit ceiling......😭
But who heeds a driver with modern 3wood and UDi anyway🤷♂️
he said he has 9ft ceilings
What type of net did you get from Menards I cannot find that at my local Menards was wondering what section did you get it from or part number if you still have that
Carl's Place (4:3) 144" Diag.- 7.7 x 10 Ft Preferred Golf Impact Screen Finished with Black Vinyl Edges and Grommets, Golf Screen, Golf Simulator Screen, Golf Simulator Impact Screen, Impact Screen www.amazon.com/dp/B07KBDJK79/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Ztj5Db189AWRT
Sorry that was the link for the impact screen. The net at Menards is by the tarps. Pretty inexpensive, 20 bucks or under
Hey, what size room would you recommend to set this up?
Honestly as long as you have 9 ft ceiling to clear swing path (unless you're super tall), you can tailor to your size needs. Big or small, it's all pretty workable with this type of setup
But how do you putt? I've seen others using sims like this but never actually seen anyone putt on one so just curious how it works. :-)
Russell Reilly track man simulator can putt very accurate! Trackman costs 40 grand tho ahah
I've seen a few channels (Rick Sheils and Peter Finch) that use it but still haven't seen anyone use it for putting. lol
I noticed that you didn’t bring up the price for the Optishot sensor. $1000 for all of the other stuff but how much for the sensor.
Sensor is included with Optishot system which I mentioned costs around 300. Hope this helps
Opti is infrared, no lasers
How tall are you? I am thinking of doing this in my garage, and my ceiling is 9' as well, but my concern is hitting the ceiling with my club on follow through. I'm only 5'10.
I'm 6 ft, I think you're good unless you have an extremely steep swing!
@@mwwiseone Awesome. Thanks for the info. Looks like a fun project with an awesome outcome. Can't wait to start it. Thanks again.
How much is the software plz
Is your projector a "short throw"? Any + / - you could share about the projector? Tks.
You need a list of what you used.
I don't actually need that
Not sure if this was mentioned, but what ceiling height do you have? thanks and nice review! @mwwiseone
9 ft
If you hit behind the ball wouldn’t it damage the sensors?
There's space enough between and they are embedded low on the hitting mat/laser component - so it's well guarded against that
They are embedded pretty deep, you'd really have to aim and try and hit the lasers. It is built to take chunky shots.
Wisconsin!
Looks like this guy has a unit heater you can see at 0:25
Would you say this has helped your game, or is a good training tool... Or more just for fun
I can honestly say all of the above, just because there is a lot of direct feedback with metrics that help your game. And of course the repetition of practice will only help
@@mwwiseone Thank you for the reply!
How tall is the celing??? I want to do something similar and am trying to use all clubs so it would have to clear my driver dont want to hit anything!!!!
Did you watch the video???
9 ft
What type of lighting did you use ? Thanks
LED right over the lasers. Halogen for the room. Just avoid fluorescent!
what is the distance from the tee to screen, and your distance from projector to screen?
Tee to screen is 8.5 feet. Projector to screen is 14 feet. Also recommend to have 18 in to 2 ft ideally behind the screen to ensure the screen has enough room to recoil when hitting driver and longer irons.
can you use plastic balls and get the same distance and readings
There is options to use fake balls, real balls and even without balls. You can just swing right over the sensors.
What is the radar ?
What if you shank?
I put up a shank guard, just some thin plywood
What's the minimum dimensions someone would need for one of these? Width, length etc.
Probably 9 ft ceiling. And the mat can be whatever works for you. Probably 9' high x 8 ft is min and reasonable
He obviously can’t add. 300 for the projector, 300 mat, 300 impact screen, 800 optishot. 50 net, 30 for ball holder, 50 for the green area. So you can make this for under 2500.
the optishot is $300 and he said that he bought a $300 mat thats not needed and you can get for much less in the video he even says he goes over 1k but tells us how to stay below it
Hi mwwiseone, what is the best email we can reach out to for golf sponsorship?
Hey one question, do you put in your clubs in to the simulator or how does that work?
You calibrate each one by dragging the club square over the sensors 5 times, then open 5 times, then closed 5 times (it's a bit excruciating, honestly - but only have to do it once). You can put multiple clubs sets in there and save them.
Did your projector come with a hanger for it?
Yes
how difficult would it be for a lefty and righty to share this setup?
As long as you have enough space to swing on either side of the sensor, it's not a problem at all. I wouldn't recommend switching it around each shot, the settings on Optishot specify if players are LH or RH. So its really just more of a space issue, hopefully not for you!
When you video something do it with your phone sideways not vertical
Thank you so much for this extremely helpful comment. I definitely don't understand the difference between landscape and portrait, and definitely didn't use portrait intentionally to ensure you all could see the top of the screen. I don't know where I went wrong but have you to thank for this enlightening information. And none of this was sarcastic at all.
I'll make sure the next video is in landscape so you can't see anything and important parts of the screen and setup are cutoff.
How well does the sensor work when you use irons? And does it wear out the turf quickly when you use your irons
It is designed pretty well to take repetitive irons hits. We use it frequently and it has held it's integrity. They are embedded below the turf so it's built to take normal and fat iron shots. Hope this helps
