awesome space, thanks for sharing! I am currently planning to build a house with a designated golf sim room:) What i learnt, is that ill prolly take some more money in hand do connect the hitting mat with some kind of putting rollout
Thanks to Sam Rockwell for putting up these videos of his golf simulator. SkyTrak looks like the best option if I'm looking for a simulator that tracks the ball itself
For tees try out Birtee. You can then cut a tee claw and twist it into your mat and tie the other end of the lanyard to the birtee. You won't ever chase them or have to cut tees down again.
I was wondering if u could post a list of all the items u have used for this set up and where to get them I'm curious price wise how much it would be for a setup like this
Just the room I was hoping to come across. Thanks for sharing. My build will be similar in size and the question is do I use acoustic foam to pad the walls and how thick (5cm or 10cm) should I use.? Will it absorb the impact or add bounce? Thanks.
I don't think the acoustic foam in a realistic thickness will do much to pad the walls from golf ball strikes. I use the acoustic foam for sound deadening and it helps protect my club head on the occasional strike to the ceiling. I only use the 1" acoustic foam on my ceiling and it would do nothing to absorb impact or bounce. The only areas that I protected from direct golf ball shots (that aren't the screen obviously) were around the screen and about 4 feet out from the screen wall on the sides and ceiling- basically where you see the curtains in the video. In these areas, I applied 1/2" rigid foam insulation to the studs and covered the foam with a layer of berber carpet and the curtains over all of this; this assembly is flexible enough to deaden the golf ball and the carpet is strong enough to stop anything I hit at it. I hope this helps, let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
@@Pause4Life Thanks for reply! Guess I will have to rethink the material for the impact zone and use the acoustic tiles selectively. You mentioned Carl's impact screen, any model in particular? Great job on the room! Cheers.
I want to reduce trampoline effect on my impact screen..do you anchor the bottom of your screen or let it hang free? Also..I'm guessing your projector is mounted behind you/above you..how are you avoiding getting a shadow on your screen? thanks much!
Great information! Where did you buy your golf mat that is in front and surrounding your hitting mat? I'm looking to do the same thing at the cheapest price and making sure it is the same height.
Thanks, I'm very pleased with it. The hitting area is about 12' wide and it's about 8.5' from tee to screen. The overall room is approximately 19' to accommodate seating and club storage. Thanks for the good words!
@@Pause4Life thinking about the skytrak...just read they hit you with a $200 annual fee? I guess if you play alot ..but dang, seems they get from every corner. I am going with the rmotion first and then this system. Just seems spendy for the golf package and then a yearly fee!
The projector is an old BenQ W1070. I don't have the literature with me, but I don't think it is technically a short throw projector. It is mounted about 8' off the floor and approximately 3' behind the line of impact centered on the screen. During a swing, the club throws a shadow, but the motion is too fast to be noticeable. If a take half a step forward, my head will start to block the image on the left side of the screen, but it's really not a problem for us. The closer the projector is to the screen, the less shadow you will have but the image becomes smaller. I had to play around with different positions to get the best image size, least shadows, and obviously not hit the projector during play. Hope this helps. Thanks for the questions.
Hello. Just bought my first house and want to do this in my garage. Do you happen to have a amazon link for the mat? I can't seem to find it. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.
Do you often fade the golf ball? Or pop it high into the air? Just asking. I plan to be an instructor, and there is endless options for styles out there to examine! Either way, sick room ... I imagine you get lost in there haha! Cheers mate.
Thanks! I do tend to fade the ball with my woods and driver. I only ever pop it up if I tee it too high. Thanks for the comment and good luck in your endeavors!
@@Pause4Life thank you for not taking it negatively! I'm just inputting. Putter literally taught me how I should hold a club, so putt your rear end off! I think the best advice ever was "be effortless and let your arms hang from your shoulders" cheers mate!
I’m about to install a simulator a lot like that here in a couple weeks. Is your carpet the “Fresh Cut 12-ft Plush Interior/Exterior Carpet” from lowes? Thanks!
No. Mine is a finer cut and lower quality than the Fresh Cut stuff you're referencing. The stuff I bought was around $.15 / ft sq. It was the absolute cheapest they had, but it does exactly what I wanted it to do. I have another layer of old berber carpet under the green outdoor carpet that helps cushion balls falling onto it and gives it a more realistic/ softer feel under foot. Neither one of these carpets applied directly over wood or concrete subfloor would be soft or plush enough to dampen ball drops in my opinion. Hope this help. Let me know if you have any other questions that I might be able to help out with.
I'm setting up something similar in the garage in the next month. Are you connecting wirelessly from the CPU to the projector? If so, what device are you using? Chromecast?
Hi, do you have to line up right down the center of screen? It looks like you are off to the right by a yard or so. Just curious, I’m planning out a garage setup with a 12 ft. wide screen. Thanks!
The impact zone is off centered in my setup by a couple of feet. Because of the room, this is how I needed to do it. The software allows you to shift the onscreen centerline to coincide with actual strike point of the ball which gives a lot of flexibility in setup. The other benefit in being off center is that the impacts on the screen are off center also which allows me to reverse the screen once I think the screen is getting worn in that area and hit into a new portion of the screen that hasn't seen any golf ball strikes. The screen manufacturer states that the screen is not reversible, but I have a feeling that is because the assumption is that most people are hitting to the center of the screen so when you reverse it, you are simply hitting into the opposite side of the already worn section of the screen. The same theory applies to the mat as I can turn the mat 180 degrees and double the life of the mat. The screen police may hull me off for doing this, but it's a chance I'm willing to take. I hope this explanation was somewhat understandable and helpful. Also, my room is setup for right handed golfers only, things get more complicated if you try to setup for both right and left handed swings. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
what could a person expect to pay on a yearly basis to use the skytrak, researching looks like there will be a couple different subscriptions one to skytrac and another to a 3rd party sim. do i have this correct? can the system be used to just play at home not online without subscriptions? thanks for the answers in advance
you need to have a minimum of the game improvement plan with sky golf on the skytrak to integrate with the 3rd party simulators. I have a skytrak for about a year now with a home net in garden. I plan to build a sim but until then I will use the skytrak with the basic plan ($0 and included with the skytrak. this allows you range access and limited features. no dispersion feature but adequate for practicing. to play course you will need $99 game improvement plan + 3rd party subscription. I plan on getting game improvement plan and lifetime The Golf Club membership for a once off fee when I get my sim built.
How long did you lay off for? I played 3 or 4 rounds a week since I was in my 20s and hurt my back in 2009 and just like you, decided to come back with a skytrak. I never hit balls before, but love the ability to do so now. I had a standard throw projector I bought used to save a few bucks but got tired of smacking it on a follow through...I just bought a short throw and when it comes I will have to play around with it when I get it. I am going to move my mat back a little after watching your video. I am too close... thanks for putting up video.
I took about 5 years off and it cost me about 4 strokes on my handicap. It's never too late to get back into it again and I've really enjoyed having a space in my home to practice. Let me know how your setup works out and feel free to post any tips or tricks you've found useful. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the post. Simulator looks great. I’ve been looking at doing the same in my basement with Skytrak and was wondering what the dimensions of your set up are. I have 9’ basement ceiling but measuring it’s really 8’9” to the bottom of the ceiling joists. My biggest concern is having enough clearance to use a driver without having to shorten my swing. I’m figuring I’d lose another inch or two once I put the hitting mat down leaving only 8’7”.
I just wanted to add a note to this discussion that I have 7' 6" ceiling height in my basement. My driver is 44". I've yet to hit the ceiling with a driver or any club for that matter. Full swings, without shortening or altering my swing. Cheers !
Its 9 feet and he's 6'2 to 6'3 and he can swing driver but he has a relatively flat screen. Figured I'd just share the info as I also do tend to miss some information when i watch these videos.
Not at all. Most of the time I can't even see the dot because the ball is in the way, but sometimes I place the ball in inch or so in front or behind the dot and frankly I don't even notice the dot at all. It's a total non-issue. Thanks for the question.
