So the hospital itself has been a place of healing for 500 years but what's interesting is that Tiber Island also held the Temple of Asclepius in Ancient Rome. Asclepius was the god of medicine and healing; therefore, you could say that the island itself has been a place of healing for over 2,300 years. :)

So cool, I will be staying in the Jewish Quarter during my first ever visit to the eternal city next month. I found this amazing property from 1578 called Palazzo Costaguti at Piazza Mattei, I do sincerely look forward to the entire trip. I might even be tempted to go on a tour with you guys, as I have never been on one before, though I travel to Europe almost every three to four weeks. Thanks for this episode dude, and keep up the great work.

It wasn't in the Jewish ghetto, the Costaguti family is obviously Italian. And the ghetto doesn't even exist anymone, it was a few streets that were entirely demolished in the late 1800s.

I was there last week with a tour. Considering that you said much of it was closed on Saturdays, owing to Jewish observance, imagine my surprise when our main pasta dish had bits of pork in it! While I didn't care, I could only conclude that at least this restaurant's owners are not too "observant."

Small typo: Pompey, not Pompeii. I know you guys know the difference, but mention it for anyone else who might be interested. Caesar was assassinated at a meeting of the senate, yes, but the senate wasn't meeting at the Curia (the regular senate house in the Forum), as it was being repaired. Instead, the senate was meeting in a temple on the grounds of the theater of Pompey (the general Caesar defeated), not Pompeii (the city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius).

This video was Awesome! My Dad did the DNA Ancestry and he found out that he's 49% Italian. I was always told that I was half Safardic and half Ashkinasic. My Dad's Dad was born in Istanbul Turkey and his wife was born in Barcelona Spain. I'm trying to connect the dots. Imagine finding this out in your 80's like my Dad did? I'm 60 years old and I now know that I have Roots in Italy.

Rome’s community is not about Saphardic and Ashkenazic, because it’s earlier than diaspora. Has come before the split, I think it’s the only one.

totally a grand area to visit, drenched in magnificent Roman ruins, but also jewish shops and restaurants. the prices were astronomic, though. there was no way i would spend that kinda money on food. so i walked a few blocs out, and got myself two slices (of outstanding pizza) for a euro each!

"With the exception of brief periods under Napoleon from 1808 to 1815 and under the Roman Republics of 1798-99 and 1849, the ghetto of Rome was controlled by the papacy until the capture of Rome in 1870." the new Italian state abolished such entities, hence the Jewish community building a great temple shortly afterward
