    Hey Theorists, what a WILD season it's been on House of the Dragon! The faceoff between Rhaenyra Targaryen vs Alicent, Aemon, and Aegon has been one for the Game of Thrones record books. Then throw in Daemon and his crazy antics and you have yourself a real BATTLE for the Iron Throne. Of course we already know what's going to happen and who will end up on the Iron Throne because of George R.R. Martin's extended readings, but today we're asking who truly BELONGS on the throne...

      SPOILER WARNING DONT READ IF YOU DONT WANT TO SEE A SPOILER
      Really quick, I just want to point out that the ending of House of Dragons is spoiled by watching Game of Thrones. In season 3 episode like 6 or something, Joffery says, "Rhaenyra Targaryen was murdered by her brother- or rather his dragon. She was eaten by it as her son watched. (Laughs) What's left of her is buried in the crypt right down there."

    One thing about English law that was missed here: Kings could choose their heirs, and override the assumption of traditional primogeniture. When Richard the Lionheart died, he'd already named John his presumptive heir despite having been usurped by him. Because Richard understood he might not have any sons by the time he died, and the other nearest claimant was too young to be king, he chose his younger brother who was both an adult and had experience with governing. His decision was backed by Eleanor of Acquitaine, the real Angevin royal we should be glorifying. Even though primogeniture law was somewhat murky on who has priority: a younger brother, or the son of an elder brother, English law trumped that and John became King of England. Of course that didn't stop his nephew Arthur from leading a failed rebellion and ending up at the bottom of the Seine, but such is monarchy.
    Viserys naming his sucessor should likewise be taken into consideration, on top of the oaths he made his vassals swear. These men can deny that they're beholden to their fathers' words all they want, but they know perfectly well who it was Viserys appointed as heir. Especially since he, at no point, took the effort to change this just because he had sons.
    Of course, because all these Westerosi nobles are a bunch of scheming ingrates, what the law says ultimately doesn't matter. You can have every law of the land in your favour and never become king if you can't back up your claim by force. That's how reality works out most of the time, and you don't even need to be a monarchy for that to apply. And it wouldn't be George R.R. Martin if his work wasn't a deeply cynical application of reality onto wide-eyed fantasy.

    • @Iruma366
      @Iruma366 6 месяцев назад +4

      The early Plantagenets were not really English. The fact that John became king over his nephew Arthur was largely due to the personal relationship between Queen Eleanor and her daughter in law who was not well liked even by her own people and the fact that nobody knew the young prince.

      Before Henry VIII there wasn’t a written inheritance. It was basically who had the bigger army. That’s why Matilda lost to her cousin Stephen, because her army was smaller than Stephen’s. The War of the Roses started for a similar reason. Richard II’s heir was his grandnephew Edmund through his niece Eleanor. However, his cousin Henry IV (son of Edward III’s fourth son Jon) deposed him and instated himself as king. It was only when his grandson Henry VI was shown to be a weak ruler that the Yorks (descended from Edward III’s third son through a female line) claimed the throne.

      @@Iruma366not to mention that these foreigners don't even respect their traditions and oppressed them for centuries, also Rhaenyra broke several oaths (even before Viserys died), this alone should be enough to make her invalid as a ruler.. not to mention that by the end of season 2 she killed more people than Aegon

    Rhaenyra's biggest mistake is her failure to secure her position within King's Landing. Viserys was wise in letting her join the Small Council. Daemon has his Gold Cloaks. They were in a position of power to send off Aegon Aemond and Daeron to be warded off away from King's Landing while she controls the King's Landing.
    Then it's very easy to summon each new lord to the capital to again swear fealty to Rhaenyra.

    • @MasterOphSky
      @MasterOphSky 6 месяцев назад +5

      Thing is, there was no question of a succession crisis at the pivotal moment. There was tension between the two lines, but it was looking to subside just before Viserys' death. The biggest problem was that Viserys was still king, and would never have allowed for his wife and children to be sent away, as he didn't want to even consider the thought of his two families fighting over the throne.

    The thing with the books was that both Aegon and Rhaenyra were actually bad and unfit to rule. So it was a choice between two evils. Yet in the show Rhaenyra seems much better, which kinda kills one of the main points in this conflict, in my opinion.

      Agreed. And this is not the first time the show runners have done this. In the main series Jon Snow is depicted as a good guy, with a cool sword and wolf who kills bad guys. But if you've read the books, Jon Snow is not at all like this. He's more of a politician than an excellent warrior. He wants to do the right thing, yes but he takes morally questionable decisions, even more so after being elected Lord Commander of the night's watch. But all of this is omitted in the shows because they needed a hero

      I agree that they made Rhaenyra as some kind of Saint compared to how she was in the books but she was still more brutal and horrible than Aegon, the whole blockade is happening because of her.. she knows full well that her blockade isn't directly affecting the greens, it's affecting the people of King's landing, and then she acts like a hero when she gives them food, as if they wouldn't have gotten it if she didn't put up a blockade to begin with.. the markets in Westeros operate on the principles of the invisible hand in economy, which means that Rhaenyra is basically using the suffering (of the people) that she herself created through an economic crisis as a weapon.. then there's also the dragon claiming scene at dragon stone where she literally orders her guards to stop anyone from escaping from vermithor's layer, it's genuinely baffling how braindead the hotd community is on the topic of who's more evil overall

    Let’s fill in the gaps.
    Rhaenyra is ‘heir presumptive’. Even without Viserys naming her so, she was, and even when he names her, he did nothing for her but publicise it. Heir presumptive means her being heir is subject to no other heir having a right to the throne. Aegon is ‘heir apparent’. His right to be heir is written in law. While we actually don’t learn much about what legal precedent is, we do know that GoT follows English law, so we must assume that to keep it consistent, this isn’t going to change on the flip of a coin.
    Had Viserys died with no other children, Rhaenyra would be queen, but when Aegon was born, Rhaenyra was automatically bumped to second place, and with Aemond, she was bumped to third (not going to go into her children or newphews/nieces to keep it simple). But since Viserys had a son that lived, Aegon is rightfully the king.
    However, Jaehaerys did name Viserys as his heir, setting precedent that the king can in fact choose an heir regardless. Sure, even when Viserys was selected, one could ultimate figure out who had the right to rule, but people accepted the ruling. Therefore Rhaenyra does have a right to be queen.
    Ultimately though, it doesn’t matter. Even though Aegon is king, his right to rule can be challenged, and even though Rhaenyra was named heir, her right to rule can be challenged. Therefore it’s not about who has the right to rule, but who can impose that right without being challenged, which is why the conflict exists and also why other powers, such as the impact of other houses and small folk, are important to consider.

    • @PysellaRose27
      @PysellaRose27 6 месяцев назад +9

      Jaehaerys didn’t choose Viserys. He couldn’t choose, that’s why he had the lords of the realm choose for him.

      @@JuanPerez-ru5qt ultimately the blame for the Dance falls Viserys.
      He choose to make Rhaenyra heir,
      He choose to remarry despite that,
      he choose not change his chosen heir when his son was born,
      he poorly choose a husband for Rhaenyra,
      he choose not to have the new lords swear to Rhaenyra when the old ones passed,
      he choose to not to make Rhaenyra regent while he was sick.
      All in all regardless of what he claimed after Agon was born never put the weight behind Rhaenyra she would have needed to have a clear mostly uncontested claim. he fence sat between his two children and made it so neither could had enough support to not fear the other usurping and gettign rid of them an their children.
      And in doing so he insured the Dance.

      @@sfsin3380 yeah I agree. His kindness was a weakness. It's weird that the whole thing ends up like daemons revenge to get his heir on the throne since it skipped him. And the civil war was like his own little personal ladder. I also think that viserys thought if he named daemon and then had a son he would be killed somehow by daemon. It ended up being true but different. Also killed his brother's grandson. Viserys didn't protect his family from his brother. But the king after is weirdly both their descendant. Viserys grandson and daemons son. Targs love to hate, hate to love.

    Aaron Sorkin wrote it best into The West Wing's Season 1 Finale: "Decisions are made by those who show up."
    Rhaenyra was starting the Dance at a massive disadvantage. She spent the final years of her father's reign on Dragonstone.
    Yes, she was producing more heirs to secure the family's bloodline, but she was absent from court.
    Ceding control to the Greens for all those years allowed them to completely transform the Red Keep.
    The Iron Throne was no longer surrounded by symbols of Valyrian culture, but Andal culture, specifically the Faith of the Seven.
    And the Faith's seat of power isn't in King's Landing, it's in Starry Sept in Oldtown and heavily influenced by the Hightowers.
    In that time, the Greens stacked the Small Council with lords who were loyal to Ser Otto and his scheme to make Aegon King.
    Decisions are made by those who show up and Alicent did just that by serving as Regent for Viserys in his final years.
    The fault of the Dance doesn't lay solely at the feet of Aegon or Rhaenyra. Their rivalry was entirely made possible by Viserys always trying compromise and keep his family together. He wanted to be a good man, but it made him a bad king.
    Rather than ensure Rhaenyra would succeed him, he made like Doctor Evil when it came to killing Austin Powers:
    "No no no, I'm going to die and not actually witness them crowning Rhaenyra, I'm just gonna assume it all went to plan. What?"

Rhaenyra was named specifically to disinherit him. Rhaenys was passed over for her cousin Viserys despite her father being the older brother. Targaryen succession is not based on male preference primogeniture, but male ONLY primogeniture

    The Seven Kingdoms is an absolute monarchy. Word of the King is the law. Therefore if King Viserys decided to confirm Rhaenyra as his heir, even after the birth of his sons, she is the only legitimate heir. Furthermore in medieval (and to a certain extend modern) times, oath of vassals are transmitted to their heir. Therefore the lords of the Seven Kingdoms are still obliged to Rhaenyra. From a purely legal pov Rhaenyra is the legitimate heir.

  • @Edmonton-of2ec

    9:16 Actually that’s male-preference primogeniture. “Male primogeniture” isn’t really a term that anyone uses. The closest thing I can think of is agnatic primogeniture, but that’s a term that means the succession bars women and their descendants from inheriting the throne at all
    And funny enough, if male-preference primogeniture was the definitive law of the realm, Rhaenys would be queen, as her father’s place in line would have held her above her uncle’s sons. This is why Victoria became Queen of the UK after the death of William IV, and not her cousin the future George V of Hanover.
    13:34 Not… entirely though, because it is ultimate Matilda’s son Henry who would end up succeeding to the throne after Stephen died, even though he had living descendants (although I should note the first male descendant of his wouldn’t be born until 1207, over 50 years after he died).
    There is also the precedent of the Glorious Revolution during the reign of King James II (and VII of Scotland) where his eldest daughter and child from his first marriage seized the throne from her father with the help of her husband and many of the lords of the realm through Parliament after the birth of a male heir to her father’s second wife. That would be a point in Rhaenyra’s favor.
    16:50 Russia yes, France no. After Louis XVI, France would have between 6 and 10 monarchs after him, the last not losing their throne until 1870.

    • @JustFlemishMe

    I think Rhaenyra is incompetent at the very least. She knew there was two factions forming in the Targaryen family, yet she lets the green faction rule in her father's stead while he is bedridden (the entire time, the green faction is solidifying their power and position). Would it not be in her best interest to be at her father's side in Kings Landing? She also seen Viserys on his deathbed, and still flew back to Dragonstone to leave the greens in control of Kings Landing, Rhaenyra is either completely oblivious to the dangers of the greens, or she is completely incompetent.
    Rhaenyra should have taken control of Kings Landing in her father's name, brought her dragons and her household guards with her, with her husband Daemon by her side we can assume the Gold Cloaks would declare for Rhaenyra. She should have been by her father's side when he passed, if this was done, the greens wouldn't have an opportunity in the first place to crown Aegon ii. This incompetence leads me to believe she would make for a mediocre queen at best, likely not good.
