I think picking the optimal eeveelution for each pokemon to face should be considered part of the routing. Like how vanman decided to manipulate which eeveelution he faced in the porygon race as part of his strategy to save time, while you and speedrunner just went for an optimal Brock split. Leaving freedom to pick the eeveelution that's easiest to face or not just opens up another layer of strategy for the runs.
I fear the “you should have played against the hardest one” spam comments. Hehe. However, I think you’re right. I can shoulder this burden.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon The strongest argument for "You should play against the hardest one" is that there really *AREN'T* many hard opponents in the entire game. Even among those, the AI has a high chance of using garbage moves like Tail Whip, Agility, or Growl, etc. The E4 (-Bruno) + Rival are really the only time you're ever have anything challenging to overcome in the first place, and that's only because 1 out 6 of of their pokemon have a 1 out of 4 chance of using an actual damaging move like Earthquake or Thunderbolt or something.
I don't think you should feel bad for having Seel face Flareon in the last playthrough: after all, these are about speed and a degree of consistency, and (at least in theory) Flareon would consistently be the fastest way through the game, for Seel; it's like how you see the Rocket Hideout as an optional aspect which you can choose to tackle or not depending on how the playthrough is going.
Good breakdown 😎
Agreed. I have a better solution to this conundrum figured out after this video! You’ll see it in a bit!

He's playing Yellow, but he's also feeling Blue and seeing RED.
It's baffling to even imagine that a Water type can do so badly in a Gen 1 solo run, even in scenarios that are supposed to work in its favour it manages to find ways to struggle.
Thank you for sacrificing your sanity for us, the pokémon doesn't get the "seel" of approval but the stream sure does.
I wonder how all the other water types would compare?!
Very well, as Seel is bottom of the barrel as a Water type, as a Kanto Pokémon, as a Pokémon in general, and as a Pokémon evolution line.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon How is it that even Blaine or Giovanni could be struggles?
I can't explain how much I got to love this evolution line. It's literally what you're signing up for. Even it's SHINY is almost same. Plus, it's such a bonus when people get mad over it. Very entertaining overall
Honestly out of all the gen one water ice type the seel line is poggers.
@@bigkirbyhj666 I think I like it the most too. Lapras is usually a no-brainer pick, but I think these two beat it in cuteness and utter simplicity for the sake of simplicity
@@bvd_vlvd Also now for punishing the baby he needs to dewgong a run.
@@bvd_vlvd I don't know about that. Lapras is very cute to me. The sprite gen 2 and up especially.

A water type that doesn’t learn any water type moves in gen 1 through level up. Makes sense.
In fairness, surf is the best move for all water types
@@TrinityCore60 dont dox your bro bro
This is actually interesting, since the ice gym leader from Johto has a Seel without a water move. Seel feels like is supposed to be an ice type without actually being an ice type
Same way how Sandshrew/Sandslash cannot naturally learn any ground moves in gen 1, including dig, which the two lore wise, do all their lives
Electrode not learning any electric type moves through level up
Never thought about how Leech Seed works well with Cloyster's defense.
Laughed so hard with the Electric "Venomoth" sprite thanks for yet another great video
Hehe Venomoth is freaking cute. Venomoth deserves to be Psychic / Poison but would make it overpowered and with little to no type weakness.
@@derekclawson5707 It should have been a Bug/Psychic type.
I very much like that you tried Jolteon thoroughly before switching to Flareon for consistency without over-leveling. You struck that balance between consistency and staying a relatively low level which makes these fun to watch.
Yeah but I still agree with one of the other comments that manipulating the eevolution is a cool tactical decision to make. It might save time to go with the one that's weakest to the challenge pokemon or not. So he really shouldn't go for the strongest eevolution, but for that that lowers the playtime enough.
Seeing that Seel actually matches the surf sprite is very satisfying though. It would be fun to do a run only using Pokémon that have an over world sprite. In gen 1 I don’t even know if that’s enough for a full team.
Dewgong is one of my favourite Ice types. I absolutely love Seel. I wish GF gave it more than just being 'bad Lapras' because its design is real enough that it helps to ground the world in reality, and helps to make the world believable. I really hope its back in Gen 9 and they give it some stuff, cause it really needs it.
Mega dewgong when?
i agree. I really like how simple it is--it feels very gen 1 to me. Seel itself serves as a bit of a time capsule design-wise since I don't think any of the other generations could get away with such a "generic"/realistic design. It's from a simpler time where a pokemon was just a normal creature with some spikes and a hue shift.
Don't get me wrong, i love the new pokemon! I just love them All and i like the variety in them, including simpler pokemon like Seel :]
@@ismellupdog 'I don't think any of the other generations could get away with such a generic/realistic design'

The Snom line?
I remember when Squirtle was based on a squirrel and a turtle. That’s how long I’ve been playing Pokémon.
The only thing I don't like about Seel is that he's always not available until later in the game, you'll be able to find the millions of other stronger water types by then. If he was located earlier in the game his evolution's typing would be very useful and make you at least think about not replacing him.
Honestly, in a strange sense it’s fitting. Seel really is another Water type in a series that floods you with more and more Water Pokémon and Seel (and it’s evolution) has proven itself to be useless, here, in a casual playthrough (though that is because it is found late), in any sort of challenge run, in a speedrun unless the speedrun is specifically to run a Seel (and given this, no one should run a Seel in a speedrun), or in competitive, now or later. Even Dewgong in Gen 1 competitive is mid, in the UU tier.
Yes, given that Seel struggles everywhere, it should be a Route 1-4 Pokémon. However, since it is not, it’s like they want you to forget it, and it turns out Seel (and Dewgong) are that forgettable outside of being a Gen 1 Pokémon.
Can't believe I wanted to have an easy water Pokemon run on in the background while studying and it ended up being one of the mostt frustrating! Also also, actually actually, you often do this thing where you chose an eeveelotions based on what makes the run smoothest, so I was surprised by Jolteon, and I feel that, this makes the decision to change for Flareon is totally acceptable!
I guess he has had enough runs where Jolteon is the optimal choice to forget that Flareon exists as a final battle?
Vaporeon only exists as an option if you can’t attack btw
Used to like Seel because of some weird Pokemon/KFC crossover where you'd get a bean bag toy of a pokemon with a kids meal. I think Zubat, Vulpix, and maybe Dratini? were the possibilities with Seel. Idk it was a weird time but I got Seel.
I remember those small plushies so fondly.
That plushie is the only reason I remember Seel exists. They’re great quality plushies for the time they came out.
I felt the same way about Tauros when I went to Burger King. I always got him as my toy when I ordered a Big Kids Meal. So he became one of my favorite pokemon. 💀
In Seel's defence: Horsea, Persian, Muk, Tauros, Mr. Mime
My Scott Thought’s Pokemon Lunch #13. Hmmm so im against eating seals but some people apparently do. Im going to eat a slab of meat. Seel in later generations gets Thick Fat.
Alternatively if i dont finish my lunch I’ll “seel” it with a Saran Wrap. Love the videos Scott!
I’ll eat Seel after this one….
Venomoth isn't electric btw, it's actually Fairy/Steel, but I can understand the confusion. Hard to tell with those electric steel fairy wings, you know.
I've always had a fondness for Seel and Dewgong since they're adorably derpy and very solid pokemon for when you use them in your teams-if you need a water or ice type, they'll do quite well. Lapras is better of course, but Dewgong is very reliable in it's role as a water/ice type.
Was really surprised at how rough Seel had it for the solo run, though it seems like some of it might be a lot of bad luck
Appreciate the effort that you put into these. It is above and beyond just being entertaining. It's also my new favourite thing to try and predict who will struggle (sometimes literally) in Yellow.
I actually love Seel and Dewgong. Dewgong has such a goofy smile and they’re just fun, if basic, Pokemon. Kangaskahn is similar for me. Going to have to podcast the video in a bit, but I predict that Misty and Lorelei will be walls without Thunderbolt/Thunder. Only having Water, Ice, and Normal moves is going suck.
i think the anime 'ruined' the pokemon for me...like, i wouldve wanted to catch one and maybe use it in my teams, but then the first time it appeared in the show, its goofy smile was paired with the dub-voice "THEEL!" and i just never could take it seriously after that...
I love the idea that Pokemon scientists were naming the Pokemon and they just accidentally named it basically the same thing we did.
I'm really not THAT into Pokémon anymore but I still appreciate the multiple playthroughs for each Pokémon anyway. I keep coming back för more. The videos are getting real good!
I love these challenges, Scott! Great job!
Man. What a run. With some Pokémon I could see how this would be a blast, but some (like this one) seem so brutal. Keep up the awesome work Scott!
So I can't wait for Scott and all his thoughts today..
Came here from your 40K video. I'm really happy you persevered the way you did with Seel. I think that it makes sense, if you're optimizing for time, to let all the pokemon face their best Champion matchups. I also think that you did eventually find a fairly consistent champion fight. The way I see it, mimicking Earthquake, hoping for a kinesis miss or a psybeam, and hitting Egg with a blizzard was your best bet. Great job!
I’ve loved seel and dewgong for a years now, in fact Dewgong IS my favourite pokemon.
Lockstins video about the line has made me love it even more.
First time making it to a premiere and this is awesome. Good work man! I’ve decided to take off due to a minor injury so this is a great alternative
Seel looks like he has one of those twirly mostaches villains like to have in old movies. haha He kind of was the villain with all he put you though Scott but once again your amazing strategies pull though in the end! Well done pal!
that old back sprite really adds to that haha
Loving the longer videos mate! Always a great watch!
I want another group race in Generation 2 using Smeargle. It's equally painful and intensely strategic to use because you only get a total of 10 moves you cannot ever get back, need to be spaced out in levels and you have terrible offense (but your Speed is pretty good at least).
You’re a legend Scott. Thank you for all the uploads. Much love ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This one could be pretty exciting. Looking forward to see how it works out. Gym 1 for sure gonna be a struggle. I hope that I can finally for once catch up with a premier. Let's go Volks!!
Looking forward to Seel how it works out*
Was actually a pretty cool and fun run.. :)
Oof, I did not expect poor Seel to struggle so much in the end. Poor guy needs a speed boost or maybe some coverage to help it out in the champion fight. Love your new thumbnail style by the way!
Hey Emily, glad you’ve liking the new thumbnail!
I didn’t expect it to struggle so much either. You’re right away speed and coverage. I think a stat boosting move would be a game changer as well. Amnesia would make it so good, but even agility or something like harden would have been nice….
Your videos make my week man thanks for doing what you do.
watching this for the first time now and it's so funny hearing how optimistic scott is in the beginning and knowing the deep seeded hatred that will develop by the end 😭
If you think about it, even seal would've been a better name with "sea" in it to match the "dew" in Dewgong.
The problem is that’s literally how you spell the word seal. Dewgongs name is horrible too.
It’s good we do more work on these names than the translators did heheh
Some other have suggested a more serpentine body to make Seel a pun off of Seal and Eel.
Hello Scott and Denis!
I feel Seel the seal will seal the deal by lvl 70 for real.
This is despite knowing almost nothing about it lol
You might as well have been correct. Seel took until Level 68, but that was luck-based. If Seel was good, 68 would be respectable, but it is clear that no matter what Seel would need to be level 99 for any sort of consistency. Though high 70 could be good enough to get to Cloyster consistently with both the Jolteon and Vaporeon final teams.
@@iantaakalla8180 Lucky guess on my part lol
@@iantaakalla8180 Seel isn't bad. This is matter of how in the end type disadvantages could really be the end all be all before abilities and natures were introduced in gen 3.
This is one of those videos of someone playing through gen 1 Pokemon that reminds me just how important for the balance of the games it was that they introduced abilities and natures even though for me on a personal level I've never liked them because they always make it feel like battles drag on longer than they should.
Especially with an ability like say Sturdy which just means I have to wait an extra turn to knock out something I'm super effective against because it always has 1 HP the first time I use my super effective move. The fact they fixed how trainers use items also tends to make me feel resentful because coupled with something like Sturdy it means I attack the mon goes to 1HP the trainer gets a chance to fully heal their mon's HP that I should have already KO'd because I'm super effective against them, this means I have to mash the attack buttons a bunch of extra times for something that will inevitably result in the same endgame (the enemy mon fainting).
I'm going to be THAT person but Mew's name doesn't reference the sound cat makes for the simple reason that in Japanese, the cat goes "nya". And no, they didn't chose to use the reference cat makes in English. When he translated all of the first 151 Pokémon names in French, Julien Bardakoff asked the japanese executives if "Mew" was supposed to be a cat sound and they denied it.
Mew comes from "mutant" and maybe "new".
I've always thought that squirtle was squirrel + turtle because wartortle has those "fluffy" ears and tail.

If you ended up using stall tactics, would it have been worthwhile to mimic leech seed? in Gen 1 there is a glitch where if toxic and leech seed are co-applied, the leech seed sap affect is applied to the damage dealt via toxic. I am not sure if this still works in Yellow but it definitely does in R/B
Love Seel!!! Been waiting to watch this one!

Do you teach dig to one of your HM mules for the teleport when your main poke can't use it? Or is that illegal?
I do teach Dig to charmander and use it for teleport.
My shower thought today was, how about a test of "Which type should Venomoth really be?".
What I mean is changing Venomoth's type to every type it should actually be (psychic, grass, flying, poison etc) and see which beats the game fastest.
I'm not sure how much it would add up, but at a minimum typing would affect : STAB, damage taken, and status effect immunity.
Hey man love all your videos! Would it of been good to mimic leech seed to seed the cloyster and ninetales?
I did try that. Doesn’t solve Jolteon though. Thunder still just wrecks…

Thanks so much for the support Alex, it means the world to me. Glad you enjoyed the last two. I’m working really hard to improve the quality for each release and make each video unique in some way.
I know that this line isn't creative in names and designs and is not even good in competitive battles, but I have always loved Seel and expecially Dewgong. They are adorable. And despite what many people say, Water and Ice in Gen 1 isn't a bad double type at all. These 2 types combined destroy a lot of Mons and with the decent bulk of the Seel line they aren't even so bad defensevely.
I really wish Seel also had the Ice type :(
If it helps, Dewgong is good in Pokémon GO if you have Ice Shard and Icy Wind, which are legacy moves.

When optimizing for real time, would it be better to skip the optional rival to get Flareon? Or does the faster training for Brock offset the resets vs Jolteon?
In this case it appears it a wash… probably level slightly more and attempt to plan for the magneton out speed. I don’t know it’s in battle speed stat off the top of my head though.
Man, the localization team really phoned it in on this one. There _had_ to have been better options. This sounds like one of those beta placeholder names.

Still need that poliwrath vs politoed run
Poliwrath vs Poliwhirl is also a great run because they are two of the fastest pokemon but Poliwhirl might be a little faster.
Poliwhirl and Poliwrath are so powerful that they are the only pokemon that can reasonably pass on learning Psychic.
It's that time of week. Scott's thoughts and a nice relaxing bath. Here we goooooooo
Ah yes, the derpy sea unicorn Pokémon! Always fun to see how the game is different for each mon you run through the game with. I like the name too!
Dude that was an obscene amount of critical hits you suffered in that run from Jolteon. Jolteon is one of my favorite Pokémon but it was low key annoying me with all those crits. Great video!
Yeah, it has like a 25% chance to crit because of its speed :(
I guess to an AI, 25% is 100% especially when you can not dispatch the Pokémon before Jolteon and you are a water-type
Will you ever do Let’s Go solo challenges? With the additional typings and better move pools it seems like it would be a great opportunity for some of the Pokémon that might have been more lacking in the O.G gen1 games
Don't the Let's Go games limit if you can enter a gym or not? Like I swear Brock required a Water or Grass type on you or something

Great video, I'm surprised how poorly it faired in the late game that toxic stall strats appeared to have more consistency
Yes, gen 1 was cohesive in it's design philosophy. They are all animal adjacent, science-based or based on RPG conventions. It's why I think the gen has the strongest designs. A degree from the real word. In addition, the artist used a more naturalistic approach to his drawings, color wise as well. I will take a silly seal any day of the week over a fucking anthro soccer rabbit.

Me: *BAY-BAY!!! mutter mutter mutter KISS FROM A ROSE FROM THE GRAVE*
No, but seriously, this was, as per usual, an excellent video! Also as per usual, it's sad that Seel - a WATER Pokémon - doesn't naturally learn water moves.
Also, fun fact, there is a band known as Wake Me that originally went by the band name No Fair Fights. During that time, they performed a rock cover of "Kiss From a Rose" that's actually really good. Red from OSP uses the theme a lot whenever there's an event in the myth/story that warrants it. Which is often.
Also, also: I love the fact that you literally called your Seel :P
Phew, what a toughie! Hard work pays off!! Nice challenge!!!
Hmmm I know its not *ideal* but what about skull bash? The defense raise should activate the badge boost and then you attack. There might be something there, or if you think you can tank hits... bide?
Skull bash doesn’t raise defense in gen 1 unfortunately :(
Around 6:50 the stats of seel go up and down, it is ok ? (I didn't check if it is also the case everywhere)
The stats are live from the games rom. So they adjust when they change in game
Looking forward to you revisiting Pokémon to try them out again with your improved experience!
I’m looking forward to it too!
I love the smiley face as the name. Never would have crossed my mind
I love the videos but I gotta ask you don't like using double team but why use rest aint it just a stall tactic of getting hit resting and then wait for an opening and then rinse and repeat
Rest is more predictable and it doesn’t trigger the badge boost. Double team is entirely luck based and every Pokémon could use it to win at extremely low levels. Rest helps, but if you can’t strike back because the enemy does more than a third each turn, then it doesn’t solve the fight. Double team on the other hand would.
What takes more time, doing the playthroughs or editing the footage?
Editing and production is like 3-5x the playthrough time
Seel is a staple in my old pokemon deck. Dewgong was just so good. An Uncommon that could do most of what Gyarados could do was great. Seel also was much less likely to just die turn 1 compared to Magikarp.
