    I actually understand why Pidgeot is more intuitive for most people as that was the bird they used growing up if R/B/Y was their first game and if they watched the anime at all they rather have it than Fearow due to how it was portrayed. Now come to terms with that both birds fail to even compete with the true bird king of Kanto, barring legendaries, Dodrio.

    I think you should use “levels grinded” for a metric instead of final level. This helps illustrate how much a Pokémon is walled at a certain point and how much you have to grind to overcome it, without penalizing a Pokémon that levels up faster for being a higher level.

    • @TheLeviathan1293
      @TheLeviathan1293 2 года назад +10

      I agree. That takes into account difference in growth rates, such as in this case. It doesn't make that much of a difference in this case, though, since Medium fast is just a little slower than medium slow for the first 50 or so levels and a little faster for the rest. It makes a max of two or three levels of difference. I think it would make a nice difference from pokemon in fast and slow groups where there can be a difference of 14 levels.

    • @Matt_Zoran
      @Matt_Zoran 2 года назад +17

      On the other hand pkm that struggle against brock will have a disadvantage in that case. Grinding from lvl 10-20 takes way longer in the forest than lets say lvl 50-60 in the late game

    • @iantaakalla8180
      @iantaakalla8180 2 года назад +2

      Surprisingly, that means that level finished does matter so far as it reflects level grinding.
      Like if you can do the regular gym challenge without much grinding but then you grind up to Level 90 for that good move the levels matter.
      That being said, if the levels they end up when finishing the game become a metric again, it should be split into four different metrics.
      Levels grinded/time taken but recalibrated to adjust for experience group would measure how much effort it takes to grind up a Pokémon. The amount of levels needed for each grind is needed to see just how much time is dedicated for each grind.
      The amount of grinds needed and where they are illustrate how bad the Pokémon is for that region because that describes how many key fights wall that Pokémon.
      Finally, the level they finished at remains.
      Now “level a Pokémon finished at” is more properly an effort marker than just a level comparison.
      Furthermore, significant blocks, like Brock, Whitney, Watson, Norman, Tate and Liza, Platinum’s Fantina, Lenora or Cheren, Ultra Necrozma, or Eternatus should be noted so that we can actually gauge overall ease instead of thinking a Pokémon sucks because it matches poorly against the next major battle, or that a Pokémon is good because it handles the next few battles well.

  • @shanoc5902
    @shanoc5902 2 года назад +34

    Gotta say, I really appreciate how you do multiple runs. While I wouldn't mind you cutting back to 2 runs per pokemon or even 1 run per pokemon if you really felt you needed to, I feel that these multiple runs help massively in getting a better idea as to what's going on. While there's a lot to be said about the intuitive nature of a pokemon, if you had stopped after the first run I would have felt like the grinding before the league would have played a significant aspect in biasing the results, and here it was that I was missing what the bigger overall problem was! It's really nice to see both the 'blind' playthrough as well as the 'perfect' playthrough.
    Also in defense of using levels as a metric, while I definitely agree with your point that time is more valuable than level I think there's something to be said about a pokemon that wins at say level 50 vs a pokemon that wins at say level 100, at a higher level the pokemon has less room to get 'better', so if someone was looking to build a team and was willing to put in the effort having an idea as to which pokemon would win when they're both at level 100 has some value I feel, if only as a tie-breaker.

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  2 года назад +4

      Yeah, multiple playthroughs helps to provide more context. Sometimes I get logically trapped in what I think is the best strategy, but I have a way to hopefully weed that bias out. I’m trying to see what the best time I can get with each Pokémon so this is required to do that.
      From a video perspective I do think the extra playthroughs cause a bit of bloat. I’m working on a production solution to fix that for the next versus video!
      Level range is certainly a good metric. 70 vs 60 is a difference. But 63 vs 62 is not really something I want to judge a Pokémon based on.

    • @shanoc5902
      @shanoc5902 2 года назад +1

      Oh yeah, I hadn't even thought about how small a difference of 63 vs 62 could be. Maybe for a level metric you could say round it and use that for comparison, like while their actual level may be 61 you put a (60) in brackets on the score sheet and if the other pokemon is a 62 since that also rounds to (60) then it results in a tie on the level metric? It doesn't have to be straight rounding, but if you aren't happy with a straight level comparison you could try changing the metric slightly to fit what you want. While it may take a bit extra explanation, having a 62 (~60) or something for the score page I think would give you some room to represent a bit more nuance if you want it. Just a thought, really enjoy the videos! Also for what it's worth, I don't mind the extra bloat as I enjoy longer videos and I feel that you make effective use of your video time so it never feels to me as if things are 'dragging on'.

    While this is a great video and comparison I would have been more curious about the difference between a fearow & dodrio. My guess is dodrio would take it by a few minutes because it is a tad bit faster and has slightly more attack but the early game with less move options and the 11 level difference in evolution would probably make it a super close fight especially since it's also part of the medium fast level grouping!
    Regardless thanks for your time and effort, this series has been amazing to watch!

    So this should be an interesting match up.

      @@valor1omega Pidgeot is a mix with it based off Osprey and other various birds of prey like eagles and then as cockato for its crest. So I don't know how you think Pidgeot isn't a deadly hunter or lame in design when they are both a reference to several various birds. Though the birds fearow is referencing aren't really hunters but rather waddling birds. A large overall mix actually. Fearow's birds they are referencing are Heron or Ibis mainly due to that long neck. Though it doesn't have the long legs.
      And lol at calling Pidgeot's crest dumb when talking about Fearow. Fearow's comb is like that of a chicken. In general a hens because it doesn't have those flaps roosters got.

As for compared to the 'so called try hard' of really just a ok punk rock hair style on Pidgeot. I really don't see what your issue is with punk rock man? You gonna tell me something like Dixie Kong's hair is bad as well?
      And of course Pidgeot doesn't scream fear me. Its not designed that way. Its designed to be mimicking birds that have been useful for humans. Go into a top tier bird of prey but comes from humble beginnings.
      Something that can be good for humans cause people train birds like that to be useful. Homing Pigeons are awesome and the idea it can grow into also hunting for people is even better is all I'm saying.
      Don't know why you want just scary but I guess Fearow being more scary I'm fine with giving it. You ever deal with a swan they aren't to be messed with I guess lol but still. Why would I want something that won't earn its keep?
      Still, why Fearow for all that when you got Dodrio? I mean it is stronger than Fearow and learns better stuff.

  • @androidboyd
    @androidboyd 2 года назад +5

    I'm guessing Pidgeot wins. Fearow has a stronger late game move, true, and a better "solo pokemon playthrough" stat line, but Pidgeot will level faster and should be able to beat Brock sooner, depending on how risky Scott takes things with Sand Attack.

    • @valor1omega

      Pidgeot won due to raw luck and that's it.

    Really awesome comparison!
    You should do a comparison of the 4 early flying type Pokémon of Johto.
    There are more early game flying type Pokémon in Johto than in Kanto.
    There's Pidgey, Spearow, Hoothoot, and Zubat.
    Hoothoot evolves at level 20 just like Spearow.
    Zubat and Golbat learn wing attack.
    Also, gust is a flying type move in Johto.
    Hoothoot and Zubat are caught at night. Pidgey and Spearow are caught during the day.
    I know Ledyba and Hoppip are also low level flying type Pokémon found around level 4 on the route north of Cherrygrove City. But, they don't have good moves.
    In the Johto games when the player goes to Kanto they can catch a level 4 Doduo left of Viridian City.
    You could compare the winner of this video with Doduo and Dodrio in Yellow.

    Before even starting the video. My opinion is that the best defense is a good offense . Fearow gets Drill Peck, and is faster and has higher attack, but not only that, having a basic Flying move much earlier, Peck, giving super-effective STAB against all of the bugs, putting Fearow ahead at the start. I have a feeling Pidgeot's better bulk won't make up for that time loss. My vote goes to Fearow, although it could be a slim margin.

    Why is this even a discussion? Look. Spearow evolves into Fearow at Level 20. Pidgey evolves into Pidgeotto at Level 18, but doesn't turn into Pidgeot until Level 36 - making it, essentially, a Flying-type Starter Pokemon, like the other Route 1/1st Route birds in every generation. By the time Pidgeot comes into existence, Fearow has already been pumping up its stats & its moveset for 16 entire levels. Fearow would, thus, wipe the floor with Pidgeot from the get-go.
    Not that either had all that great a moveset in Yellow, mind you. But, speaking of that Fearow also has a better level-only moveset then Pidgeot - at least as of Gen 8 - as well, with things like Drill Run acting as an anti-Rock & anti-Electric counter-move.

    I think that onter metric you can add to the playthrough is banning moves that dorps accuracy, and banning the use of vitamins, whenever you are doing the first run for each pokemon, and then using vitamins, and using moves that drops accuracy for 3 additional runs and see how the results differ, it could be interesting.
    Onter then that, it was a great vs video, and I'd love to watch onter early game pokemons trying to compete against each other. 😉
