    I've always been using mist filters for photography since I have them.
    I first had the nisi 1/8 filter but now I'm currently trying glimmerglass, from the effect I feel that I like the Nisi way more.

      If you are doing just photography I would recommend 1/8 more. It's more subtle and can definitely be an always on filter for photoshoots. 1/4 has a really nice effect but gets tricky in some situation's because the effect is too much. Best ofcourse us if you have both and can switch between them. Also higher focal lengths seem to strengthen the effect.
      (Just some information in case you are thinking to buy one. My first was 1/4 and it was too much, ended up never using it)
      But everything is personal taste ofcourse, and I also love the look of 1/4 it it's done right like in this video.

    Great video, I'm not a filter type of person but you made me want to try one, maybe just the 1/8 strength. I did like that it wasn't too strong and still got to keep the look of what comes straight out of camera.

    • @JamesReader

      Thank you Shawn! Definitely start with the 1/8th strength. Very versatile.

    I ordered a 77mm 1/4 for my RF 50 f/1.2 and a 82mm 1/8 for my RF 135 f/1.8. I've heard that the effect increses the more tele you use, don't know if it's true but I'll give it a shot

    What a beautiful look James. I think the 1/4 black mist filter looks the best. That 15-35 is no slouch either…😅

    Beautiful photographs with fantastic models 😊 I think it worked out really well. So far I have not enough experience with softening filters but it seems or I think that they require careful lighting of the face the bigger and softer light source the better. Is that your experience too?
    I use a softening filter from Schneider, 1/8, just a bit softening of skin tones and lessens contrast in skin tones otherwise good contrast.
    I think Nisi 1/8 and 1/4 looks best. I have several filters from Nisi, they are very good not the best but close.

      Thank you Martin! I would totally agree in regards to the ideal lighting. I haven’t tried the Schneider filters before, I’ll have to check them out! Thank you for watching

    Nice video and great portraits.
    i noticed slight color shift on the 1/2 filter towards reds , just a question can’t we add this effect in post , specially that we cannot undo this after taking the photos ?
    Thanks

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Год назад +1

      Thank you Bez! Yeah maybe a bit of a shift towards green at 1/2. You can get a similar effect in post, I’ve just not had great results personally for photo. In video however software like dehancer or even just the stock Davinci resolve effects do a pretty good job.

    Keep in mind that the strength of the diffusion adds up with the focal length. A 1/4 at 24mm might have a similar effect as a 1/8 at 50mm.

  • @77dris

    Amazing colours in this video. That opening shot especially is super "cinematic"! I'm torn between the 1/8 and 1/4, though the final night shots at the gas station almost look best with the 1/2. These almost simulate halation in a way, yes?
    Btw, if you are using for video, and you need to use ND filters, how would you stack them with a mist filter?

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Год назад +1

      Thank you DRIS! I like the 1/2 for the gas station shots too, definitely gives a similar effect to halation. I put the diffusion filter first (closest to the element) then add the variable ND on top. Seems to work well with no vignette unless you get as wide as 15/16mm

    • @77dris
      @77dris Год назад

      @@JamesReader Thanks James! I guess you would need to use a step up ring to do this? ie if you have a 77MM lens and 77MM diffusion, you would need a larger varibiable ND with step up? Or would a 77mm variable ND work?

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Год назад +1

      @@77dris a 77mm variable ND would work fine in that scenario. Only at extremely wide focal lengths could any vignette be introduced. I always buy all my filters at 82mm and use step up rings, then at least I know they will always fit most lenses.

    Unfortunately the filters I use Lee Filters no longer produce. I use polyester soft fx filters in frames which run from 1 - 5. The No. 2 is my favourite for photography and the No. 3 for videography. I’ve tried many types including the Nisi ones you used but nothing compares to the Lee polyester filters which are widely used in the film industry to defuse lighting.
    I have to say the other thing is I’ve never been able to create the same effect in Lightroom / Photoshop this is one situation where the filters win out.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Год назад

      Shame to hear they are no longer available Jeff. They sound great. I’ll have to keep an eye out for them on the used market place. Totally agree about how difficult it is to get the same look in post.

    What would you choose, Nisi 1/4 or Tiffen 1/4 black mist for portrait shoots? I already have Cinebloom 5% for everyday use (it matches the 1/8 filters)

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Год назад +1

      I personally would go with the NiSi. I have owned the Black Pro Mist a few times from Tiffen and didn’t like them. Better Tiffen filters are the Black Satin and Glimmerglass in my opinion.

      Tiffen also has a Black Glimmerglass as well! It’s kinda hard to tell and say since depending on the setup and focal length and aperture, different filters have different effects. I own the Black Pro Mist 1/4 & 1/2, Black Satin 1, Black Glimmerglass 2 and Moment 20% and from the wide prime lenses I’ve used (24mm & 35mm) it depends on the lighting situation. The Cinebloom is the worst with contrast. The Black Pro Mist blooms the most at 1/2 (used to have a 1) and then the Black Satin followed by Black Glimmerglass. But as far as contrast, I still think the Black Glimmerglass and Black Satin has the most, followed by Black Pro Mist. Been wanting to try the Nisi, would love to see a comparison with all your Tiffen filters!

    • @JamesReader

      I talk about the issue I had with Glimmerglass around 6 minutes in. Basically occasionally it can heavily reduce contrast in when shooting backlit or into a light source
