@@dslrvideoshooterjust a heads up, some Tiffen filters like the Black Satin have grids of bokeh artifacts that can make certain shots unusable, since they show up so prominently in bokeh orbs. Just had it ruin some client shots I did since I wasn’t aware of that issue. I called tiffen and they were like “yeah we know, other people have complained too”…
I have the Glimmerglass 1 and often film outdoors, let me tell you, the halation and the way it softens the harsh digital frame are worth every penny. It makes my footage look dreamlike and totally different to anything else out there. So much more to it than any software effect you can use.
What do you think about GG 1/2? On videos looks like it is twice less powerful than 1 and much less powerful than BPM 1/8. I consider GG 1 or GG 1/2 just for having really subtle halation. I'm just afraid 1/2 can be twin image to no filter because so far Glimmerglass line is the most subtle in Tiffen.
Nice filters. I would love to see a video showing the differences between lens filters and post effects and the reasons why some effects can’t be done in post as well as a lens filter.
@@jessecumberledge4530 Haze is - again- something different entirely (if you're talking about pumping haze into a set). Haze, optical diffusion and "digital" diffusion are all a bit different...

Thank you so much for giving me a shout out at 8:08 Been watching your stuff for ages and never thought I would one day appear in one of your videos :)
Thank you for the comparison. GxAce, Casey, might be the most creative filmmaking and photography channel I know. All his content is way up there. Strongly suggest his channel. Every video is almost like a sci-fi movie (blade runner and such), great content.
This is interesting on an artistic level. Modern lenses are so clean/clinical that people are adding character to them. Stuff that is just part of the inherent character of many vintage lenses.
Amazing video as always, and was actually just starting to go down the diffusion filter rabbit hole (Tiffen, Moment, Urth, etc.). Was also happy to see the shoutouts at the end of the video. Such a simple gesture, but genuinely something that can make a huge difference for smaller creators!
I can’t be the only one who isn’t a fan of Black ProMist filters. I get when they’re used with a purpose, but way too many people here on RUclips use them 24/7 and never take them off their lenses. When I see videos with very low contrast and extreme highlight blooming I can tell right away they just slapped on a BPM filter because everyone else is doing it This Smoque filter is quite interesting though and if used purposefully I think you can get amazing footage with it
Agreed. Glimmer glass is much better. I see a lot using 1/4 to 1/2 BPM filters, it's too much, but like a lot of newbs the tendency is always to go heavy handed.
Thanks for the hint, I had no idea that such filters exist, very few shops carry them - and I like the effects! Will definitely try them one day for both photos and videos.
I refer to that triangle chart whenever I want to buy a diffusion filter. I hate the pro-most 1/4 that I have. I think I want the black Satin, but 82mm is always outta stock. I noticed Tiffen sells them directly from their site since years ago.
Thanks for this extremely useful video! I’ve been following your channel for 5 or 6 years maybe more haha, and I’ve always added those effects in post production because couldn’t decide which filter to buy since there are expensive. This video will definitely help me chose and take the plunge :) Edit: I also love using my fog machine to create a smoky ambiance in my sets, but since I make 30min long shots, it’s not consistent as time passes and grading is sometimes tricky, those filters will definitely solve that.
Wow thank you for this. Never new a smoke filter was a thing. Looks just like atmosphere spray was added to the room! Also that triangle diagram is pretty cool. I’d hang that on a wall 🙌🏻
This is amazing! I use a Cinebloom and DreamFX but was curious about glimmerglass, and now finding out about this smoque filter I might just need to pick it up as well.
If a filter’s main selling point is lowering contrast, I’d be tempted to just do that in post, but I suppose it could be helpful for high dynamic range scenarios
They also effect light sources by adding a bloom effect and can have a nice softening effect on skin which can be flattering on older subjects or female subjects I have an older repeat client who wouldn't like the look of the image when it was too sharp, pop on a Hollywood Black magic filter and they love it
I want to view the videos mentioned in this video but don't see the links in the description at all, just affiliate links and product links. Were they removed?
Hey Caleb, great comparison video! I have a special request for you: recreate these diffusion filter effect within Premiere or Resolve to compare a lens filter vs color grading work. I'm sure you can recreate the Smoque filter effect by just raising the blacks and adding a bit of halation. I would be very curious to see the difference. Cheers!
I have a question Caleb. I use SLR Magic microprimes which are already a bit flare-ry, not very sharp and they don't have much contrast as well almost like a vintage lens. Now I use them as my own signature look for how they render these characteristics. I'm willing to get the Glimmerglass but is it worth it or will it be overkill?
Would love to see a comparison between this filter, and a filter added digitally in post. It looks nice, but would prefer a workflow of clean footage I can alter and play with digitally.
Shhh… don’t tell people about the Black Satin-let it be our secret weapon 😉 Kidding of course, but it’s definitely my favorite diffusion filter of all time.
Would you say that these effects are also achievable within your editing software? Is there much of difference in the final look? (Besides obvious workflow differences)
I would hope so as those little guys are expensive. I haven't tried it, but I already know you can get those glow effects. You might be able to take a solid color maybe an off-white and blend it over the image to give it that milky smoke. I need to try it.
Hey! Love the review!!!! I got a few questions. What lens were you using to film the desk shot? My next question is, based on what lens you used, what was the circular size of the glimmerglass filter when you ordered it? Last question is that, say I wanted to get the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 zoom lens and put a glimmerglass filter on it, Do you know what would be the correct circular size of the glimmerglass filter for the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 zoom lens?
Fabulous results! But why use expensive filters if the same effects can be achieved in post? One exception is that the out of frame light sources affect filters, but they can't affect anything in post. This is the only big difference that comes to mind. Am I missing something?
I think the main reason is to speed up the process. You can do it in post but if you know you want this kind of effect it's more efficient to have it straight out of the camera
It's probably because of my monitors but I don't see much of a difference between the lenses when comparing them on clips of yourself. I think using more outdoor shots instead of yourself would help, just because I noticed a difference with the room shots a lot more than when you were using comparison shots of yourself. Could be time to get better monitors as well though lol!
ну и зря. такого же эффекта можно добиться и на посте. дублируй слой, добавь сильное размытие по Гауссу для верхнего слоя, поменяй режим наложения на Замену светлым и уменьши непрозрачность. всё. абсолютно такой же эффект
Is it not possible to create those effects in SW (Premiere Pro)? If so what would be the pro's and con's. I'd think that it gives you more versatility if you can do it in post en perhaps also cheaper than buying one or more expensive filters (depending on the lens diameter). I do like the effect of the combined filters as it gives a kind of 80ties vibe to the desk image.
@@marcinmrzyglocki And the con would be that if your artistic vision changes at any point, later today or in five years, then tough luck - you're stuck with that effect forever.
