small edit- around 5:26 I say "Lens" and I meant "Filter" most of you probably knew that but I wanted to clarify.
Thanks for the content! I’ve been looking at getting one of these filters. Which do you suggest for shooting video? I’ve been thinking about going 1/4 because it seems like the 1/8 might be too subtle for me. I’ve never used one but at 100 dollars or more for the 82mm size that I’ll purchase I don’t want to have to buy twice. Thoughts?
Keep it up! I'm really appreciating these!
Ohhhhh so this is the secret!! I need to try those to get the Evan dreamy night moods 🔥😎
Pierre Lambert I automatically read your comment in my head in your accent. Heh.
Not Pierre T. Lambert saying this 😆. I love this guy man 😆
Apparently Tiffen made the different Black Pro-mist filters for different focal lengths. I saved this comment from another video. It might be useful for some:
A common formula for using Pro-mist Filters is 1/2 Pro-mist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro-mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above.
thank you so much
Learned this from Vuhlandes awhile ago and I’ve never looked back. I keep a 1/4 BPM on for photography at almost all times it makes for beautiful softer images but not in a bad way, still very sharp too if that makes sense. It’s adding a little extra magic for sure!
I just ordered a 1/4 for my Sony camera. Sony images are to sharp, hopefully this does the trick.
I’ve been a photographer for almost 22 years and I’ve never tried this filter. Pretty awesome info Evan. Going to buy in the near future and play with it for sure.
Oh dude i can’t believe i missed this kind of filter for so long ! It’s like it does exactly what i try to achieve in post as an effect ! That will save me a lot of time ! Looks dope ! Thank you so much !!!
I’ve owned and used a Black Mist for a while for both video and landscape photography. For photos, anytime you have hazy, soft light, it really helps bloom the light, similar to adding negative Dehaze in Lightroom. I got in the habit of shooting photos with and without the filter just to make sure I get proper coverage.
Very helpful video Evan. Thanks for explaining the different filter types at the start, it helped me a lot. Definitely interested in the Black Pro Mist filter now :D
Love this video!! I’ve been obsessed with this look since watching The Crown on Netflix but haven’t tried yet. I think it can be a nice addition for my interior works so I have to get one now
Halation was the word you were looking for Evan!
Bingo! See I knew one of y’all would know!
Correct. Some older lenses produced this as well...
I feel like most photographers forgot about diffusion filters when they transitioned from film to digital. I used to use them all the time when I shot film back in the day. I almost always use a Promist 1/4 strength on an X100F.
I've been using a Black Pro Mist 1/4th for about a year for photography and video, and the effect is just 😍.
The only downside is when you are filming directly at the sun, the halation is often too strong even with a 1/4th strength ^^, or sometimes you lose too much contrast and the image becomes quite unusable.
I do love the look and feel it gives to my content 👌.
Back in the day, we just smeared some Vaseline on a uv filter and saved a ton of money.

yuuuup thats how it is done.
Nice dude! Just started looking into the BPM and watched a few videos yesterday. Coming in clutch 🤘🏻
The picture at 6:29 is absolutely amazing. Anyone else got OCD trigger when Evan touched the filter glass with his fingers??
Yes!
YES!
Incredible work as always Evan. I never knew this was even an option!
Just bought one of these 3 weeks ago for photography. Looks great with portraits and night photography!
Love it. Great vid Evan!
Hey bro you are sooo correct! I have a few ND , grads and such! But no clue till now about this filter. Freaking awesome thanks so much for putting this video out!
My personal favorite is the tiffen glimmer glass 1. Essentially a more subtle black pro mist that I almost feel comfortable leaving on 24/7. But like you i prefer it at night or sometimes for portraits.
I literally JUST bought the 1/4 black pro mist last week. Great video bro!
The glow is called “halation” they’re very good. However, pro mists and glimmer glass can have gross looking bokeh when you have large bokeh shooting wide open. I personally like pearlescent filters because it basically does the same as the pro mists for the halation, contrast reduction and skin softening without messing with the bokeh.
Can you hit me with a link or the name of a specific pearlescent filter you suggest? Thanks 🙏🏼
@@jacksonlones6881 i want the link too

Also known as BLOOM. :)
Hey Evan! Nice video again. I‘m watching your RUclips vids for a while now and I can really see a progress in the overall structure, b-rolls and just the whole concepts of your videos. But one thing you always do, maybe it‘s just a personal feeling; but if you want to show like a comparison or just a simple image you‘ve taken it‘s always like a blink of an eye and it‘s gone. For example in this video I would have loved to see the picture of the neon sign maybe in splitscreen, maybe in slideover or something like that or just 3 seconds longer each. I hope you get what I‘m saying.
Last but not least, I love the style of your pictures. Not just the composing and the theme, but the whole edit. I can‘t even describe. They don‘t look like typical Instagram shots you see, they have a persona. I always know: that‘s a Ranft haha. I hope one day I‘ll shoot and edit in my own style on the level you do sir. Cheers from Germany 🙌📸
Great video! I've been thinking about getting this filter or the Cinebloom
Been photographing for decades and did not know about this filter. Thank you for the intro.
Thanks for the video. Excellent info and examples. Exactly the info I was looking for. Peace
Me before the video: He better not be talking about the expensive pro mist thingies!
During the video: yeah right
Looolll
Is there something cheaper?
@@josegaribay9550 Moment Cineblooms are a cheaper alternative
Thanks to your video, I just ordered a 77mm Tiffen Black Pro Mist #3.
I already had a 77mm Tiffen Black Pro Mist #1.
Had no idea! Thank you for most valuable information.🙏🙏😊
Aweeesome tips and very well explained! Thanks buddy!
excellent stuff buddy! detailed review. loved it.thanks. love from India!
You’re absolutely right. I come from a video background and for the past 20 years have been doing stills. I didn’t even think of using a diffuser! We used them all the time before! Thanks for pointing that out!
🙌🙌🙌 happy to hear it thanks for commenting!
I was wondering how I can make my digi fotos have more of a film feel. Next day, vuhlandes makes a vid about Black Pro Mist filters. And here we are one week later with your vid. Clutch.
Halation!! I have always used a Lee FIlter 1 or 2 soft for a style I have learned to work with for over 35 yrs - it just works and is one thing which is truly difficult to achieve in post. Also I use it on my H6d100 where more megapixels adds even more soft but sharp I am looking for
Someone been watching my boy @Vuhlandes
Hell yeah mane 😂
fr
came here to say the same thing. i’m so dead.
Right on. I'm gonna try one of these on the streets of Tokyo at night. Epic. Thanks for the vid!
I just got the Cinebloom 67mm 10% and 20% diffusion filters from Moment. Can’t wait to try it!
I see you going places my friend! Keep the good work! Thanks
Yes dude! I’ve really been loving the pro mist look lately, thinking about ordering one fr.
Aye thanks for watching!
This is great! Thanks for the info!
I love the dream fx filter from prism lens fx. It’s a good product.
Awesome video. Would you recommend using a lens hood when shooting with a pro mist filter? I wonder if this has a negative effect?
Really enjoyed this one. Informative too!
Great tips. Purchased a 1/4 black diffusion filter after watching this
First time I've heard of them, that I remember anyways. I think I'll like some for photography. Even in nature, I can see this having potential to remove over-sharpened foliage. I see they can make portraits look flattering.
i ordered a black pro mist in the full stop version a few days ago. i must be a madman😳
That velcro thing at the beginning was smooooth haha
Hahah glad someone appreciates it 😎😂
Excited for the arrival of the 1/4 black Pro Mist very soon!
1/4 pro mist is my go to. I leave it on my lens all the time. Just need to get some different sizes and strengths to try them out
Yeah I’ve been meaning to get some other sizes as well! 1/4 is also my go to!
Just seen Vuhlandes go over the pro mist. It's awesome
Great vid and info!
Low light scenarios, Perfect! I love mine! BPM #1. The ⅛. I dont think I'd go higher. In My Opinion.
going to order at least 2 from ebay for my new 7artisans 35mm f0.95! I like that dreamy effect and going to build a miniature street set just to show off the effect!some kind of starry night in the background behind miniature cars and buildings with them on a mirror!
Thanks man that was new to me, until I thought to myself - is that not what old lenses do? Glow? But I don’t know enough about that to be sure. Is there any difference? Loved the photos
5:26 nono vibe is a perfect word to describe it
analog photos have such a nice vibe to them and part of that is what this filter does
Nice review!! But is it true that using those pro mist filters affect the photo’s sharpness?
This was a great video and yes you were correct I did not know about them. Another thing for my list of things to buy 😂😂
Well, back in the 70s and 80s the softar filter by Hasselblad was on every photoshoot i can remember, the overuse of that filter led to abolishing it as a cheap trick. In general, you cant undo diffuse filters and today you can add diffuse in post.
Exactly my thought!
Isn't unsharpening or setting the details on minus in any photo editing app, to soften the image a bit + some GLOW not have the same effect, more or less?
I kinda want to buy a filter like this, but you can no undo a filter effect, while adding glow and unsharpen in post is always do-able.
Thanks for the great video. I have recently purchased Freewells 1/4 Glow Mist filter which should be very similar. I tried it on a shoot with my 85 prime which is extremely sharp. I had the subject back lit and used a flash at 1/250th shutter speed. I thought the images looked great in camera but when I got to the PC they are WAY too soft. My subjects faces and eyes look like they were taken with a shutter speed that was too slow. I ended up using Topaz sharpen to get usuable images. What are the key's to using this to get the extra softeness but not to ruin the shot? I'm now scared to try it again. This was not a paid shoot or I wouldn't have gambled on it.
I read somewhere the effect is called “halation”
This is so funny, I literally just bought a BPM 1/8! Got it for shooting cinema but realized it would look awesome for photography as well
Nice video!
For those of you that use photoshop, you can edit this look into image's your highlights as well. (Good option if you can't afford the filter right now or decide later that you want the halation on your highlights)
Very good point!! Thanks for this comment!
Hi, do you have a tutorial or something regarding this?
Thanks

What do you guys think?
West elm light fixture @ 1:48. I have the same one but with darker bulbs :)
I got a few vintage lenses, so the 1/8th strength would be good given the lenses of mine already get a decent amount of bloom. I really am curious to just how much a 1/8 filter would soften the falloff of the bloom, since they tend to bloom much harder than modern lenses. If I had more modern glass, I'd probably roll with 1/4th strength
I really appreciate you sharing this I just subscribed to you I love the way you speak it short sweet details I’ll definitely buy these the one thing that stood out to me about why I want to buy this how you can use it at any time of the day including nighttime
I did not know about this. Thank you
Hey, great video. What do.you think between the black pro mist and the glimmerglass and the black satin? Thanks.
Love the pro mist filters. 1/4 is the best overall and I've had them all. 1/8 isn't worth it in my opinion and anything over 1/4 adds a bit too much effect.
Thank you!
I think even 1/8 is a bit on the strong side
Thank you for that fyi 👍😊😊😊
Superb. Thank you!😊
this is my boy, went out and bought a whole line up of these after seeing this
This is cool!! I never knew about them
I use a nude stocking on my lens for that soft filmic look. It works fine but it raises the iso and not much practical during low light. Does the promist filter increase iso??
I've been wanting to do shoots with this effect, but was too scared to try because I haven't been able to get the effect with lightroom. I had some idea that it was because a filter would help, but I didn't know how effective the filter would be
Just woke up to a dope video. Starting my morning off right! Oh and the 1826 hat is fucking awesome. Had two people ask me about it in target 🤘🏻
Yo really?!? That’s so awesome! Thanks for watching!!
Really nice effect!
I can see the mist on it!!! I love the black pro mist.
Saw this vid on day one. In the time between I’ve acquired the Tiffen black pro mist 1/8, 1, Tiffen soft fx 2, Tiffen glimmerglass 1, K&F black diffusion 1/4.
What is your favorite?
@@rectape The glimmer glass(strength 1). For me it's the most versatile. It can live on my lens without ruining any shots. Sometimes the pro mist can ruin a shot, or make no difference to the shot depending on the condition. Glimmerglas 1 seems to be a nice middle ground for me.
Great video. Recently bought the filter, after doing some research about Andre Josselin’s work, 1/4 is the sweet spot for me.
Do you know what strength Andre uses? Thanks in Advance!
TravelwithPunit I think he is using from 1/4 to 1 .
Hi. I'm a beginner here and searching for filters, and I would like to ask if would you recommend this filter for ultra wide angle lens photography such as landscape and architecture where they are done mostly outside with enough to high amount of light? or the polaroid type of filter will be better choice in this case? Thank youuu
Photographers used diffusion filters in the film days. Now they diffuse an image in post. Software allows for more control.
Definetly a vibe🤩 thanks from Paris
Yo thanks for watching!
I’m actually sold, gonna save up for this one
Thank you for the tip!!!
Film photo RUclips was all over this filter last year it’s wild the difference it makes in night scenes.
It’s pretty cool what it can add to a photo, thanks for watching!
My man here be talking about filters and getting his hand all up in that glass. Why you mess with my OCD like that man!?! 😫
Cool video through! 😉
everyone needs these. Ooooor shoot with vintage lenses. Promist filters are on almost every film set as you get a softer, more cinematic look.
You should try the cinebloom filter!
This is what I've been looking for without even knowing
Good stuff Evan.
Hi there. Would running a Pro-mist Black be much different than going s little negative on the Dehaze slider?
Allready using it for over a year loving it
Need to get one now 👌
its crazy how many people don't know about pro mist filters
i am considering this filter.. but i need more information.. plan to use it for full body portrait.. which will perform better for 20mm or 50mm? 1/8 or 1/4?
Thanks for the video, what about CINEPACK soft diffusion filter ? Have you tried it ? Thanks
I have noticed that when I am using my black pro mist 1/4 filter on my 85mm lens I get some weird reflections in my photos, especially when I shoot directly into lights. Have you ever observed something like that?
Can I add a filter on another one without adapters if they have the same size, for instance 77mm? so I’d like to put a black mist on a 77mm diameter lens and then a nd+cpl filter on the black mist.
Thank you for explaning I really appreciated! ☺ I have a question for you, thank you in advance for answring... I would like to use the lens Sony 24-105mm on my Sony A7IV, then I would like to apply a Nisi Black Mist on it, and on the black mist I’d like to put the ND64 6stops + CPL integrated filter by Nisi. Will I make a mess of my photos and videos? Would this be a bad choice to make? Is the 24-105mm G really less sharp, bidimensional, sad looking and not good in night, low light or indoors situations? Cause my intention is to get a tridimensional, cinematic looking on my photos and videos.
Hey, thank you for this amazing introduction! So, can I use the Sennheiser MKE 600 on the R5C without applying anything? can I just apply the mic on the cam? here is also this NiSi Filter ND64 (6 Stop) which I would like to buy, and this Canon RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens, Commlite CM-L50BII Dimmerabile 50 LED Ultra High Power Videocamera d and Battery V Mount, Moman Power99 Vlock with the cable Moman Tap50 - , int his case do I need a box or something else to connect it to the camera? is it better to have a card reader or can I transfer photos and videos directly from the camera trough USB, is it slower? for what concerns the card, I would like to buy the MICROFROM 1TB CFexpress , and finally the gimbal FeiyuTech Scorp-C
Great video! Just bought the 1/4 strength and full 1 strength! Have you ever used the higher strength filters ?
I’ve never got into the 1stop range just cause the effect is so strong, but there’s a time and place where it can be used for sure!
Evan Ranft thanks for the advice! Got it for more of a vintage look!
I found myself slowing the clarity slider down a lot and compensating with the contrast slider when it comes to dreamy golden hour photos. I'm curious to know the difference between my method and using a pro mist filter.
And, any results? :)
