- If your shifters are jammed or don't work properly, overhauling them might be a good idea. I'm walking you through a whole process step by step. Enjoy!
Thanks for the video, helped a lot! I have just rebuilt two shifters with your help.
I always struggle with the springs, and nearly gave up, then I had an idea to use dental floss to pull the spring in place: put the spring in the lever, loop the dental floss around the notch that needs to catch, hover the lever over the mechanism and as you lower it pull the dental floss hard until the spring is in place. You should then be able to pull the dental floss out.
I tried that method with the first one, took me a few tries before I did it, but with the second one I got it first time!! Took me one minute.
Happy days.
For anyone struggling with the spring: use an old piece of shift cable. Fold/ bend the cable and use that to hook the end of the spring and pull it through. This worked first try for me!!
Wow. the shifter is a very complex mechanism. I will never take mine apart, but wanted to see what it all looked like. Taking that thing apart and putting it back together is an act of bravery. I salute you sensei.
I've moved to SRAM and they are more simpler, easy to service an work on!
Thanks for the vid! I reassembled exacly the same model today, and after some 🤬🤬🤬I came up with the idea to use a piece of fishing line to get the front spring in place. Worked fine!
That was so complex...
U are so professional..Nice job for it
IT'S GOD LEVEL SKILLS THAT YOU JUST SHOW SIR,GOD BLESS n MORE POWER
Good video. I recently rebuilt a 3300 from about 2003. It was an interesting experience to say the least. I noticed a few things differnet on my shifter: the washer didn't have bend to it, the downshift assembly didn't have the U shaped spring with one end going through a hole in the plate, my shifting plate didn't have a tang with the hole in it; instead the spring end rode on the cable wheel. And that return spring; that was brutal! I also had difficulty with the brake pivot rod. Not sure I would take the time to rebuild this one again.
Ohh man...i bought the same?( i am actually not sure form what year my Author 3300 is, there is no info on the internet anywhere its black frame with this Sora and Direction Author series sticker on the frame) bike like one week ago, currently changing the rear derailleur form old Sora to the new Claris, and that is just beginning(-:...Love this old bike, i have another 3 road bikes , and my vision for this is something like Caffe racer vibe bike(-: do you have any pictures of yours A3300 on the internet?
@@Kf1rr I think I have a couple of pics on IG; if not I can post them to it. I thought about it again and may take it apart again (glutton for punishment) and see if I can tighten up the shifting action
@@Kf1rr I have a standing offer of €200 to buy a ROOT 257 RACING bike here in Austria which comes with old Sora Flight Deck shifters, Sora front and rear derailleurs (with blue colour). It is an 8-speed setup. During the test ride ride I found that it was difficult to downshift the front derailluer. The chain was skipping couple of sprockets on the cassette. Do you think I should buy this bike? If yes then do you think if I just replace the shifters with new Claris shifters, then the shifting problems would go away? Do I need to change the derailleurs too? The bike hasn't been ridden much and was mostly lying in the cellar of this person. Feel free to add your comments. Cheers!
@@sandythemonk i just check Root 257 if it is in good shape then its not a bad buy for 200e. In terms of shifting , those older bikes have mostly original bowdens and shifting cables usually(20 years old) ,so sometimes you just change shifting cables and any problems with shifting are gone. If not new Claris front derailer is really cheap those days.
@@Kf1rr Hi David. Thanks a lot for your prompt reply and for your time to find out about this bike. You are right, a pair of the new Claris shifters is less than €100 and they come with internal cables. Do you think these new Claris shifters will work with the old Sora derailleurs which are there on this bike? The derailleur setup is 2x8. Regards, Sandeep.
I have the same Sora shifters on my old bike. This video may give me the courage to try to bring them back to life.
Shimano needs to pay this man. Handsomely. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
@SickBiker Thanks for the Video! It saved me a lot of time repairing my Shifter with the same Model. An Advice for the hardest part by bringing up the tension on the last Spring: I used a rubber band like it is used for bread bags. Just bring up the tension on the first part, use a Screw Driver at the last distance. It helped me a lot. Then just Tear off the band when finished.
I watched it because I wanted to see how the big front spring was installed and the guy jumps the stem saying "it's done" I was like whaaat! He doesn't show how to put it back. Dang!
Now I just have to find 'new' hoods. That's a lot harder than tearing down and re-greasing everything, lol.
did you find any? im in the same boat and need new ones.
@@cole3774 same, looking everywhere but found nothing. It's a shame, because my bike runs so smooth I don't want to replace it just for the hoods!
I don't know how you didn't loose anything down the gaps in your work bench there! Great job and thanks!
This video made me physically woozy. Serious vertigo!
You gave me the confidence to at least look under the hood and give my gears a really serious clean and definitely to Not pull the whole thing apart. So thank you!
3300 8 speed was used from 2003 to 2008 model years. Interesting fact: There was an earlier 7 speed Sora of the same design too.
The same type?
And what about Claris?
@@renzocipriani You're correct. Claris too! Thanks for the reminder!
Excellent video, it helped me a lot, I did the repair of some ST-2200 they are very similar and I had not found a guide so well made. Thanks
Excelente video, me sirvió mucho, hice la reparación de unas ST-2200 son muy parecidas y no había encontrado una guía tan bien hecha. Gracias
Great, was looking for the clamp screw, this showed me where to look.
I have the exact same model of shifters. One of the shifters doesn't always engage, so I think the mechanism is worn, but seeing how you do this, I am definitely not going to disassemble mine!
i did it all my myself. its ok. thanks for the video
helped me a lot! thank you kind person on the internet
So very well explained! Thank you!
Brilliant and so well explained a big thank you
that is a nice job man, congratulation. i will dismount a newer version of sora shifter so I will use this video alot i guess, thanks for sharing !
Are you sure this is a ST3300? the return spring is different and this has a plastic piece under spring , mine is brass???
Was there a series "8" speeds in sora group set? I thought sora was all 9 speeds. I'd like to know the series. Nice video.
Thanks for video, wanted to make sure i got the right bolt to remove them and install a new steering wheel. I got this set on a bike (do-it-urself-package) i bought back in 2007 from ebay. It's a Dema Alvito-DC. I only recently found out that Dema is an actual brand from slovakia that's still making bicycles.
hey, I doing a st-3400 maintenance. I can't figure out how to position the spring that is responsible for brake lever to return. I can't see exactly on your video how you put tension on it. On my st-3400 there seems to be no place inside the body for the straight, short end to 'lean' on and create load.
I came because mine at times feels like a gear with teeth missing sometimes and you need a couple of attempts to change down.
Thinking buy new now.
hi dany, can you do some review of microshift road shifters? i think they deserve a full review and your perspective, because their are so cheap in aliexpres, even the centos 11 speed or centos 10 speed, chears from argentina
Agustín Eduardo Angriman I have.Microshift arsis 11 spd on quality bike. Expensive and pretty noisey. Better to buy r7000 105 cheaper.and smoother. Microshift were goo.but.prices aren't cheap.now
@@glennoc8585 in argentina their are at least 50% cheaper, i think its a good alternative for an old bike
Boy was I nervous one of those smaller parts was going to go through the gaps in that bench top!
please help ... replace hood cover for this
Where did you get those replacement hoods?
Nice!!!! I watched your st-6700 as well and disassembled it last night as I'm troubleshooting a mechanical failure in the RH RD failure hahahah You wouldnt know where the hell I can source these tension / coil springs from?
Thank you so much for this video!
This is amazing, thank you
Good vid mate
It's a great job. Definitely not going to reassemble this at night) And not gonna buy a used one
That first cover after he removed the first screw, was very hard to put back. These are very tricky to put back together.
Pra que serve essa fita dentro do sti shimano?
thank you , you saved my day, cheers
Do you have the assembly of the shimano sr-t500 ? I tried to fix my right shifting and had to disassemble everything, but i can't put it back together :(
Tried this and went well accept that lever return spring, the bit you struggled with. I couldn't do it so now riding with a flappy brake lever! 🤦
I'm struggling with that spring too! Any ideas?
@@ParaBellum2024 I finally managed it but it took some time and effort. Just saying it can be done!!
@@huggcycles1545 Thanks KC. I'll give mine another go later today.
Thanks for this. That spring was ridiculously hard. Any ideas on the best tool to use?
I can’t get the spring in
To use a small wire or cord to grab the spring end and clip it to finish the mounting like pro 😉
Gracias!!! Muy buen video!!!
Anyone know what tool is used to remove the first screw on the cover? I used a Phillips driver and both screws look stripped even though I tried to be careful. Where to order replacement screws? My hardware shop, Ace, was not helpful. Good video. Thank you.
8:55 this metal plate is cracked right in the middle it looks like it came from the factory that way because the grease on it was solid rock when I opened it up. I decided not to touch anymore and assembled again. should i change it now? Will it last a few months while I save money?
I have found a pair of Giant OCR 2 in a skip and trying to fix them for my neighbor. The shifters are ST-3300 FlightDeck Triple but unlike in the video, they do not have a tiny hole to hold the right end of the spring shown in 13:40. It seems this bit was trimmed or broke in both levers and I am looking for a replacement.
Now searching for all kind of springs/clips that could be mounted instead to perform the same function.
Any ideas or resources - PDF, PN, Distributor, etc. - would be much appreciated.
Hello
I’ve the same pb.
I felt happy when I’ve found this video, but I’ve watched it many times to understood ... it’s not the same ... and I don’t succeed in .
Have you found the right information to lock the spring ?
Thank you !
Sadly no.
I have given up because it would take me long hours to find a proper solution instead of simply buying a new pair for about 60$. Already spent too much time on this.
The broken ones I will sell as parts to cover some of the expense. The design of these particular shifters is flawed.
Good luck.
@@ycls2004 same here, felt quite confident after watching this but cannot go past this detail. result:new shifters needed!
yes, is there any more info ? my ST-3300 are different. return spring is different
can I use these as a five speed as well? i have two of these lying around, and i would love to install them, but they are 7 speed and i only have a 5 speed bike
The 7 speed version works ok with 5 speed, the low cost of a 7 speed cassette or freewheel makes it worth the upgrade though.
Thanks, despite using WD-40 my gray clicker does not work on my Shimano Sora. Off to the bike shop I go.
Thanks for this
Good afternoon.
I have a Specialized Roubaix with the Sora group, with a Shimano HG-50, 9-speed, 11-32 cassette.
One rear wheel Specialized Espoir Sport, double BlackBelt, 60TPI, wire bead, 700x25c.
Can I switch to the SHIMANO 105 R7000 36/52 - 11/30 Group?
Do I need to adapt a block for the wheel to support the 11 speed cassette?
Hey question: After you put it back together, did it still work?
I've had to disassemble one of my levers (identical to yours) but that spring at 17:12 is _really_ difficult to re-fit. Can anyone explain how they've got this to hook on?
Did you find the secret? He kind of shuffles through it in the video. I've been fooling with it for an hour and can't get that spring to hook either.
@@rdubie1873 Yes, eventually! I made a puller using an old guitar string (about .0011") wrapped around a screwdriver. I then assembled the system and partially-tightened the screws, then hooked the puller over the end of the spring and pulled it back. After several attempts, the spring went into the correct position and I was able to remove the puller. I see someone else did this using dental floss, which I suggest you try if you don't have any old guitar strings. The reason for part-tightening the screws is to hold the other parts roughly in position and prevent them coming out.
@@ParaBellum2024 Just after my message to you I tried again with a dental pick that I put a small hook on the tip, grabbed the spring end through the hole on the lever body and was able to get it done! Thanks for your quick reply!
my right shifter gear down lever broke, anyway I can find a spare one or complete shifter replacement is required?
Bro I'm stick with disassembly of shimano tiagra r 4600 can you make a
Vedio it is expensive to replace it
When I put 2nd gear it goes 7 th gear
That so why I disassembled and clean it
Nothing happened please put a vedio
Thanks for the tutorial.
do u know wich hoods are compatibles ?
same quiestion!
Do you have in campagnolo centaur, 10 speeds, disassemble and assemble it?
Hi there- to start with,I don't know if you have a dexterity of devine and patience of an Angel or perhaps you work for shimano.for myself too much coffee/ wine I shake like a leaf with a dexterity of bull in a china shop.also you seem to know all the names of parts even we can hear English is not your mama's tongue.anyway, more power to you and thank you for your valuable time heighly appreciated.
I have a 03 felt f85 with this gropset
Видимо о ручки левой ST-3300 Спасибо!!!!
Hi I have a shimano tiagra flight deck 9 speed, I braked with it and something was heard from it, as if it broke while we braked, and it weakened and no longer brakes properly, it tightens very little
You can help me in any way?
Thanks
Hi, thanks for this video. ST-3300 and ST-R3300 are the same STI? I need the cover but not find the model 3300, only for the R3300
Hey, I'm also looking for SHIMANO ST-3300 hoods. It is a little confusing, that it's ST-R3300 in the title, but ST-3300 in the video. The reference of the original hoods for ST-3300 is Y6CU98040. Can't find it anywhere, so hoping that some newer hoods will more or less fit. Visually, in my opinion, the style of SHIMANO ST-5600 or ST-6600 look very similar, but it's another line and not the same speed. And the hoods for ST-R3000 looks a little different.
Adoraria se pudesse fazer um do ST 5510.
For what purpose this eletronic wire?
Which shimano sti hood I can use to replace my Shimano Sora Flightdeck
What’s the nut called that’s being put back on around 17:42-17:45? I have an ST-4400 missing this and the washer. It’s not numbered at all in the diagram I have from Shimano.
It would really suck to throw away the shifters because of literally one nut :(
Anyone?
Mine has one spring broken. Is it possible to buy that part?
What kind of computer connects to the loop? I couldn't find it on the Internet.(
Is this 8 speed sti applicable to use rd 9 speed with 9 speed casette?
I'm rebuilding a tiagra st4400 (similar mechanism) and pretty much finished, but i can't in any way place the front lever with the spring correctly. Any tips?
I had to use another shifter as a reference to figure it out. The strait end of the spring should be visible when the shifter is assembled. If the strait end slips into the little cavity within the plastic body, it wont hold spring tension. Assembling it correctly is harder than incorrectly because you uave to fight the spring tension. Hope this helps!
11:44 - thats the part that i need to replace cause it broke. that little ratchet/pawl.
Was there a st 3303 series?
ST3303 is the part number for the Left Shifter you need to use with a triple crankset in this generation of Sora.
hi, do you have a technical manual for that? how could you manage to reassemble? I have ultegra 6600 and cannot put back together, do you have a manual for it, thanks?
You can go to si.shimano.com and search for the techical drawings of the Ultegra 6600 there.
Hopefully this link works: si.shimano.com/#/en/EV/ST-6600

why there is an electronic system in this shifter ?
I came to see if anyone knew! Just took mine apart and was surprised by it!
Me too. @@StephHall95 The cable feeds the gear selection to a Shimano Flight Deck bike computer. The technology didn't quite work so these things were notoriously unreliable.
