Nice ! with this video I repaired a jammed shifter (one pawl we see at 10:57 was stuck by rust) ! Thank you so much ! Few remarks though. 7:52 - This main shaft is secured by a pointy pressure screw. This tiny screw (1mm Hex) is located deep down the hole where you secure the side cover 17:59. Then the main axle is free to slide out. Not need to do this move at 8:12 11:26 - There is also this centering pin which is locating the 1st block in place. The pin goes into a hole in the white plastic PCB support. 14:26 - It has been easier for me to place the trust bearing on the other part we see at 14:43 as it was well centered then. 14:58 - Mention we have to place the pawls under tension when reinstalling. We see you do it, yes. But a commentary would have help. 17:03 - I think I forgot to reattach a spring helping the brake lever return movement. I'll have to remove it again.
Thanks for the detailed video! This is helping everyone making bicycling an even more resource friendly way of transportation activity. I enjoy you enthusiastic and insightful approach to this sport.
Absolutely amazing g to watch. My front shifter jammed and this gave me a lot of interest to take it apart and look. You’ve done something many would tell us impossible… ти chain bike shops. 😄
Thank you for reminding me why I never owned STI brifters! I've had LX rapid fire shifters apart despite the staked screws and corrected the spring that slipped off its stop. Lately I've taken refuge from technology by riding fixed gear only!
I have a similar 105 10 speed with the problem you described at around 16 40 mark, Shifting down . I opened it up and I can see the problem, the down shifter doesn't stay down. After shifting up if I push the whole mechanism down it will work if I don't push it down it wont shift down. I need to tighten the mechanism but I don't see any screws
Great video thanks. But, IT IS NOT EASY! I rebuilt my DA 7900 right shifter and it had multiple broken parts including two of the down shifter springs. Your video helped me trim and bend the springs so it all works again.....except it doesn't.....still working on getting it to down shift. Grrr Anyways, Danke!!
I got a used ST-6700 right shifter, because I couldn't find a replacement spring. Works good, but the grease looked worn, and dirty. I heavily degreased with White Lightning, air compressor dried, then sprayed TriFlow. I think taking it apart would weaken the existing springs. I'm considering cleaning it again, and getting a mini grease gun to replace the TriFlow. I won't be taking it apart. One thing I noticed with my broken shifter, and my new/used shifter... when shifting to the larger cogs, the mechanism inside seems to wobble a bit. It looks janky. I'm not sure if new ones are like that, or if it's a wear issue. This does instill confidence, and I surmise that this unnatural movement could be causing the return spring to eventually break.
Nice job! I have a few of those levers and there was a bad batch one time where the plating process was poor leading to rusty parts....🤷🏼♂️😐....those levers are still going ok though 👌🏻not really too much in there once apart 🤓
I end up here cause my almost brand new ( only 500km ) STI 4700 Tiagra whose small circular spring has decided to dislodge its end from its small hole making it so that the pawls no longer want to brake in each notch of the ratchet. In the upside down position which allows me to remove the bigger cover which is below the rubber hood , the pawl engage just by gravity but we can clearly see that he is loose and that nothing applies pressure to him so that he stays in the notches.it's so small to see that I can't even tell if the end of the spring is broken and if it is possible to reinsert it in its stop hole. Real Swiss watchmaker job that you can do ....Tabarnak long live bar-end shifters
Do you work for Shimano? That is really complicated. My shifter on my second bike stopped working about 8 years ago. I started to take it apart but couldn’t fix it. Hopefully, I can find the parts and try again. Wish I saw this back then. I think I miss my vintage down tube shifters. I could actually shift faster with those things. Haha. Good job.
the video is phenomenal, congratulations. I'm trying to open my 6700 right handle, it's stuck in the N°10 click and doesn't want to go down, do you know why this happens? in your video I've seen that it must be left in the lowest position of the pinion to be able to start disassembling it, I hope that you can help to me please.
Excellent video!! I found out that the "smalest spiral spring" left in the "frozen video image at 09:09" was broken. Does you or anyone here know where to get spare parts like this from Shimano?? It would be amazing to fix this without buing a knew one.
The best bet would be to look on eBay first to see if anyone is selling a “parts only” shifter, and see if you can find out what is broken about it. I have one here but same as you, springs are broken as well as a pawl pivot worn.
Amazing step-by-step tutorial. I stumbled on your page with the new product for ugrading SRAM 11 to 12 with a simple ratchet swap. I wonder if it could be an option for the more complicated Shimano brifters @
Nice video! I found that circlip extremely annoying to remove hahaha Oh, and after disassembling, then cleaning, I discovered that the reason my shifter had stopped working was that the plastic hole which houses the biggest tension spring broke in half, so there's nothing to insert it into :( Also explained why the end of the spring was warped and bent....
I now this is an older video, but as the 2 metal plates determine how much cable you pull, would it be possible to swap these out with plates from a mtb shifter to pull more cable so you can use a mtb deraileur? or are the mtb specific ones a completly different design?
I've been trying to rebuild a ST 5700, 105, RT shifter. I've have been trying to remove the brake lever pivot shaft. I can not find the sir clip like the Ultegra shifter. I was wondering if you would know how to do it and Maybey give me some info on how to remove it. Thanks for your informative videos.
Your lighting is better here than in the other similar video on YT. Your major mistake was taking that spring off the plastic right away (it should be removed later from the metal part, and left on the plastic housing) and fully removing the pin and having the guts spill out. That helps no one understand what’s going on. You should of done like the other video, and gradually pulled the pin down, while sliding out each piece individually as it sits in the stack.
I am certain this answer is too late for you, but Shimano does not recommend complete disassembly of the STI unit, and does not offer parts for them. The only way to get parts would be to salvage them from other shifters.
what was the szajbaze debacle another person here kept commenting about 9-10 months ago? could you tell us your perspective? (10 speed ultegra disassembly is something i should do on one of the bikes)
@@altern8tive That's incorrect, grease (as used in bicycle) is non conductive and act as insulation. this is why you will never see grease being apply to electronics.
mine has 50 thousand+ kilometres on it and only now starting to develop problems, so must be really well made stuff unless i'm just lucky with it (i have the last 10 speed version that still has the shifter cable coming out on the side, i think it might be 6600 but not so sure)
My shifters were working fine but i wanted to regrease them properly this way. gotta be the worst maintenance procedure in the history of maintenance procedures, maybe ever. was successful tho
Thanks for this! My cable broke inside the shifter and jammed it, and I couldn't get it out. Your video helped me get it working again.
That's the first time I watch a maintenance video and my conclusion is "i wouldn't dare trying to do it by myself, even with a video to guide me"
Thats bad
Same here 🙋🏻♂️
Thanks, great video. I used your video as guidance when servicing a Dura-Ace 7900 right shifter. However, what a pain. It took 6-7 hours.

Thank you for this video, was able to save a customer's shifter because of it.
How much $ did you charge for the job?
Dude i have this exact problem at this exact shifter, your video will be a huge help thank you so much
crazy high quality video
7 attempts but finally did it. Fantastic video, thank you! 🙏🏻
Hi there. Great video. But I couldnt find the momente when you put the brake lever spring back.
Great video, I have a 5700 right side shifter that is jammed , this is similar but still I'm having issues ldown shifting are rebuilding

Y'all can relax - it is working now. Thanks again for your video.
Loved my bike with 6700! But wait a minute, there were electronics in the shifter, like in all of them? Never ever heard about that or noticed it.
That's smart and effective work. thank you for posting this helpful video.
Great whatchmaker's skills
What is the part at 11:54 called. It's the white plastic piece that the shift cable goes into and pulls the cable tighter when you shift gears up.

That last spring (called the return spring) that he installs was broken on mine. Don't know where I'll find another without buying one 'for parts.'
Please can you do a video on how you film. Can you show in more detail how you set up your phone camera and tripod.

Can you give the specification of it
Or a link that I can get it.
You are really good!!! Thanks!
Nice! Thanks, as always!
Brilliant..how you got that all back together I’ll never know! 😂
Nice, maybe you can clean my Shimano STI too. Very well meticulously done🧐
greetings. I have some sgimano ultegra st 6703 words and the one on the front does not apply to download. Any tutorial that can help me????
Is there a manual for these repairs, and if yeah where can I find it?
Have you ever come across the stuck shifter problem on the R8000 left shifter? It can't be taken apart as easily as the 6700.
Is there any chance you can do one on rebuilding an Ultegra 6600 10 speed shifter?
Yes please, I need to rebuild one of these myself.

may i ask what is the size of the rectangular head screw under the clamp band? i’ve lost mine and i don’t know what size to buy. TIA
How do you adjust the shifter height for this model please? I cant find a video for it online ?

What grease do you use?

Can I use it for Sh dura-ace 7900?
the electrical contacts on the PCB should not be greased.

Wow! I can see why they're expensive!
kind of puts the whole electric shifting thing into perspective. a servo motor with a wireless button seems less complex than this.
