Hi. I have just read the entire Old Testament from the Bible. It took me 8 months and was heavy going at times!
One of the things that stood out to me was the religion of the Jewish people is intimately connected to the land of Israel and the promises of God. In a sense, it is not a religion that can exist without owning the land. Am I correct on this?

Here's an interesting double standard in his statements that I think you missed: He says he's no longer a zionist because he learned about massacres that supposedly took place when Israel was founded. He also is still a Canadian, who knows about the abuse of the indigenous people of North America by the European settlers, but still is perfectly OK with having Canada as a country, and himself as its citizen.
The idea that Israel, and only Israel, should cease to exist or be brutally punished because it supposedly has some skeletons in its closest, while practically every other country on earth has its "fair" share of brutality and atrocities in its history but still get to hold on to their sovereignty, nationality, security... this is the very essence of hypocrisy and double standards.

Mate actually discusses in full detail how the Canadian government has addressed, acknowledged, and apologized for the stolen land. All Mate is asking is for Israel to do the same, not give back the land, but acknowledge the role in trauma it has caused to the Palestinian people that are no longer welcome in their homeland and allow them to come back.

I couldn't listen to Mate anymore either after he publicly villified every vaccinologist, doctor and scientist who had legitimate concerns about the efficacy of the experiemental covid vaccine. He call them 'psychologically disturbed anti-vaxxers' completely ignoring the fact that all of them had taken every single vaccine ever required by their profession; some of them even created vaccines for a living for cripes sake! After his stance on Israel I consider him a fraud and am so glad I tuned him out during covid. He may have helped many with addictions etc, but he seems to have no understanding that you cannot extrapolate directly from personal healing methods and understandings to what is needed for collective healing.
I recommend Dr Phil, who has been a brave and shining hero for me since Oct 7. He spoke out clearly and publicly condemning Hamas from the beginning and is still speaking strongly in support of Israel.

Plus, he was born in 1944, and it was his mother who saved his life by leaving him with a stranger for around 5 weeks. He himself did not experience the horrors of the holocaust; he was a baby. Certainly being separated from his mother for that length of time was not good for his development. Unfortunately, he has proven to be wrong on a lot of things, including some wrong ideas about the causes of addiction. Despite evidence showing his ideas are incorrect, he still sticks to them. IMO he is doing these interviews because he wants people to believe his ideas on addiction, so he is willing to sell out Israel in order to draw attention to himself. Apparently he thinks people will discard scientific evidence if he can only convince them to like him and buy his books.

I thank you Oren for setting the facts out in a very understandable way. I am Canadian, not Jewish, but have several Jews in my life that are family & friends. It was my niece who is Jewish that got me really thinking about the two different narrative being said around this latest war that got me researching to find the truth. Your channel was one I found that has helped me understand this history of the region. I believe in Israel and I will stand by the Jews everywhere. Never again is my mantra.

Hello from Canada. I'm familiar with Mate's work as I was a mental health counsellor for over 25 years and a lot of my work centred around helping individuals and groups (some of them First Nations people) move on from their experiences of violence and trauma. In fact, Mate is not so well regarded by others in this field. His specialty may be currying favour with notables to help them embrace victim-hood so they can remain stuck and continue therapy with him. That he recorded a session he had with Prince Harry and made it public is one glaring example of what a good therapist never does. As shown in the interview with Piers Morgan, Mate adopts a stance of deflection and bafflegab, speaking about things that have nothing to do with the subject or question at hand. That he keeps coming back to himself over and over is interesting to say the least. He claims to be a Holocaust survivor and while his grandparents were killed in Auschwitz, Mate was only 5 months old at the time. He was never in a concentration camp. His mother had to give over his care to someone else for 5 weeks when he was one year old in 1945 and he claims this has led to fears of abandonment, rage and despair. Yet how many others who actually were held in the camps bravely moved forward with their lives; as for example the many European Jews who created the democratic state of Israel.
Not to metion the hostages who, if they survive, will live with trauma that he justifies.
I think that's what him and his son who calls himself a mental chiropractor are trying to do. Trauma informed therapists talk about post traumatic growth and resilience and he is a Hamas Apologist. No serious trauma therapists would dismiss the pain of people in support of others and ignore the pain of his own people experienced in the land over the last 30 years with hundreds of suicide attacks..thanks for speaking up on this.
I guess now he's showing his true colours or at the very least his huge blind spots and ego - both a very bad look for a therapist of any kind.

I came across one of his interviews on 'Palestine'/Israel, and thought oh, no, not another Jew who doesn't understand the importance of Israel being able to survive, and thrive.
Criticism, condemning wrong acts is of course important, but it seems odd there are several well known Holocaust survivours that only say negative things.
Of course, all the h8ters will post every single one of them, along with the Orthodox Jews that condemn Israel, etc., and all kinds of other rotten things, along with the bombings etc., to 'prove' Israel is really the universes evil player.

You're right about Gabor Maté. He is originally from Hungary. He rarely talks about Hungary in his foreign interviews. He has appeared in Hungarian shows and he doesn't talk about his being Jewish especially in his talks about trauma knowing that Jews are a people who have suffered so much trauma for centuries. I'm saddened to have realised this about him. Thank you.
I think Hungary and judaism are part of his personal trauma- and that is why he avoids it. It is easier to teach people about their trumas than it is to deal with your own

I don't know what you are referring to as I've listened to as many Mate discussions as possible and I've heard him reference his Hungarian, Jewish roots and trauma repeatedly.

his Holocaust survival status is also kind of controversial. He was 13 months old when the ghetto was liberated. Luckily he and his parents were not in concentration camps, though there ware many tragic and brutal events in the ghetto, it is doubtful, what a 13 month old baby can understand from this?

Thanks for another great video. My grandmother was a holocaust survivor. She was 15 when the holocaust started (Gabor was under the age of two when it ended). She came to the UK on the Kinder Transport along with her brother. All of her cousins, aunts and uncles were killed in concentration camps. The holocaust had an enormous impact on her in far too many ways to go into here, but while it was life-defining, she never once referred to herself as a holocaust survivor. It certainly wasn't something she felt good about or that she considered to give her some sort of edge. I completely agree with you on identity politics, it doesn't sit well.
When I saw the footage of the pro-Palestine protests in Liverpool Street I could not believe what I was seeing. Absolutely no consideration or empathy for the Kindertransport children and why we have a memorial there. I live in the North and I find it deeply upsetting what has been happening in the Capital. Not all of us in England have forgotten what your grandmother and all those other children went through. All I can offer right now is a prayer and to say I was thinking of them. It just brings me such sadness that others weren’t.
I've heard stories from Israelis whom their parents survived the holocaust , some of them told that their parents would wake up screaming from nightmares, or that they would get mad if they threw food away , also some would not answer the door sometimes if the knocks were too loud because they would think it's the Gestapo coming to them even thought it was decades after and they were
already here in israel , my own grandfather escaped germany before the holocaust due to laws discriminating jews starting to be enforced and his owned a building and his mother didn't want him to be arrested so she decided they would need to leave germany (smart woman) they found some smugglers and payed them so they moved to argentina where he met my grandmother and they later came to israel

I'm not Canadian nor have I ever heard of Gabor until this day. I wonder though, since he brought up a school story, did he go heavy on the school stories that were later debunked? I’ve seen it in his books - one quote I read was “most people ask why the addiction - when we should ask why the pain” … which is a clear way of shifting blame.
Jews were traumatized in 1945, and started building a country. They were attacked in 1948 to try wipe them out … they were attacked in 1967 by 4 Arab countries again, then again in 1973 by 6 Arab countries.

As a Ukrainian citizen, you must understand the Palestinian situation well. If you support Israel, then we must support Russia. It is the same thing. I think there is also an element of self-promotion; people know that if they go against expectations, the other side will promote them for propaganda purposes. Dr Mate is human, he is not perfect. In subsequent interviews he expressed regret over not showing more empathy for the suffering of the israeli people.
Let us also remember that roughly 30 Palestinians for each Israeli civilian. We are all the same species species, we all bleed the same, there should be equal sadness when any life is lost, I assume that's a fundamental tenet of the Jewish faith. I think the conecpt of pukuach nefesh may apply. I would love to see more people acknowledge the mass suffering on the Palestinian side rather than the deflections we often hear especially from Israeli government. This desire for sensitivity unfortunately in many cases seems to completely ignore that in the name of the initial victims, a genocide is being carried out.

I find it disgusting this Holocaust survivor card he uses, and also the fact that he doesn't try to support the Jewish community in Canada, or at all.
Gabor Mate's whole worldview, including his attitudes towards trauma and ADHD (the topics he claims expertise on) all come from his personal experience and self-pity. His mother raised him after the Holocaust and transmitted to him her anxiety. He sees this as the cause of all of his life problems, and it awards him expertise on everything Jewish, everything trauma, and everything ADHD (because he has it). His trademark became deep compassion, but it seems to be very selective. I live in Vancouver and run into him from time to time with a feeling of embarrassment and discomfort.
People often make the mistake of taking a victim or sufferers opinion as expertise. If anything it's much harder for traumatized people to have a strong rational understanding of something that they have such a strongly emotional connection to. There's a difference between listening to their personal experiences and listening to their broad takes on a complex political or medical topic.
I am I Jew as well. And while I grew up a Zionist many years ago I met both Israelis and Palestinians who educated me. Since then i am amazed at how much Zionism is a cult.

I have met Gabor Mate earlier this year in Budapest and I like what he had to say, however as soon as his first video came out after Oct 7th I noticed that he is using his expertise in trauma to invalidate Jewish and Israeli trauma at every chance. It hurts even more when it's someone you think has all the information to validate your pain and trauma and instead he dismisses it.

I live in Vancouver, and I used to have a lot of respect for Gabor Mate based on his work with addicts here. I am not Jewish, but I am a supporter of the right for Israel to exist, and I have been disgusted to see the blatant hatred that has been on display in our streets these last 50+ days. I have also been disappointed, but not surprised that our government at all levels have not responded to what are obviously hate crimes in any type of meaningful way. There was a protest outside of a Jewish elementary school in my sister's neighbourhood, and she was outraged, she even sent the school a card just to encourage them that they were not alone. For my part, I am ex-Cdn military, and I am not a small man by any measure. I walk around with an Israeli flag patch on my sleeve of my jacket (which was actually made by the Israeli company Agilite) and it's been no surprise to me that no one has called me out for it yet. These "protestors"/anti-Semites' are only looking for people they can bully or intimidate, I guess I don't fit that description to them.
The IDF needs to continue doing what they are doing, targeting and destroying H@mas, once that mission has been completed rebuilding and restructuring can begin in Gaza, and once there's no images of Israel actively defending itself are not being streamed 24/7 most of the western "support" for Gaza will dissipate as they bored individuals move on to the next "cause" for them to get angry about.

I'm so glad you made this video. My field is psychotherapy and Mate's work has been a part of my teachings and an inspirational figure in that field, but I am deeply disappointed in his rhetoric regarding Israel/Palestine. His ignorance, lack of compassion and empathy for what Israelis have to endure has been eye-opening. I'm not even talking about what they went through on October 7th and continue to go through. I'm talking about several times every year having to run from missiles from their terrorist neighbours, having to endure blatant anti-semitism and misplaced blame being directed at them and having to live in fear of internal terrorist attacks. When I visited Jerusalem a 19 year old IDF soldier was stabbed and killed in a terrorist attack and another time a friend visited she had to leave Israel early due to missile attacks. They should not have to put up with these things and because they do, it is an obligation for anyone with some humanity to have consideration and compassion for them. To see a trauma specialist being unable to extend those things towards Israelis is heartbreaking and unacceptable. He can extend these things to Palestinians but not Israelis it seems. He chooses to be self-righteous in his ignorance and personal ethics in the cheapest way possible now that he has a platform moment. I expected so much better from him.

Thank you for the great video. I was so triggered by the background that was behind Gabor Mate in his interview with Piers Morgan as Metro Vancouver has been my home since moving here from Winnipeg in 1976.
After a visit to Temple Mount, Yerushalayim, Israel, I went to the closest barbershop (Adib's Cut, 1542 Johnston Road, White Rock, BC, Canada) for a haircut, wearing a kippah with a large blue Star of David on it under a hat. I entered Adib's Cut, asked for a haircut, took my hat off to reveal the kippah and was told to "go to the bus stop" and was refused service. The next day I returned to the sidewalk outside of Adib's Cut and protested loudly but peacefully, after which an employee came out and asaulted me, which I responded by damaging their front door. The police came and arrested me and I gave statements about the initial religious discrimination and assault, to which no action was taken by the police.
I have been protesting on the sidewalk outside of Adib's Cut twice a day, singing Hatikva, Am Yisrael Chai, and Shema Israel. A few weeks ago an employee exited and said, "we are going to Palestine", and on another occasion said, "it's all going to be Palestine whether you like it or not, PALESTINE!" But the most disturbing incident happened on December 2, 2023, when a customer came out as I was singing Hatikva, came within five centimetres of my face and screamed, "F^^k you and F^^k Israel! You're a baby killer!" repeatedly. As he was screaming, he spat on me and it landed in my mouth.
I have made multiple reports about these incidents to the BC Hate Crimes Unit of the RCMP, BC Human Rights Tribunal, and the local City Council, Mayor, and members of the Provincial Legislature and Federal Parliament to no avail.
Today, I will go to the local White Rock RCMP detachment to make a formal report about the latest spitting assault, as well as the religious discrimination and assault by the employee of Adib's Cut. I honestly don't have ANY hope that action will be taken but will make the report nevertheless.
I am a Korean-Canadian convert to Judaism to be formalized soon. I was unaware of the halachic prohibition of wearing a kippah prior to formally being converted and will only wear a kippah after the conversion has been completed. Perhaps if I were ethnically Jewish, Adib's Cut would be out of business by now. Such is the plight of converts, especially those that have yet to convert formally.
I will continue to sing Hatikva, Am Yisrael Chai, and Shema Israel outside of Adib's Cut twice a day until justice is served. The police have been called to arrest me for "harrassment" on several occasions, but by the time they come, I am already walking many blocks away.
I pray to HaShem that justice comes before some crazy jihadist decides to take me out for being a zealous zionist follower of HaShem.

As an Asian who knows nothing about the crisis before October 7, I have learned from various sources about it. Your channel gives me many reasonable arguments for the matter. Thank you for the good work! I was so disappointed at Gabor Mate's talk about his "one-side favor". As an outsider, I see the Gaza crisis as an ongoing war between two national movements in which one side is winning and never stops developing itself, also has shown its eagerness to deal with the conflicts a number of times, and the other side has been loosing in the war over and over again, no matter how many times it uses dirty tricks or plays the victim card and together with time, it has become a sore loser! Israel is winning with more fair deals.
What annoys me is the left of the West is doing more harm than good to the order of the world, in which democracy is still a better option, although it needs a lot of amendments and it is possible to be fixed, not like those like my home country. The stupidity of the left is giving the evil world more chance to win! If only they all go and try to live in one of those countries, ... but I start to think even that would not change their blind mind.

War is terrible, we all know. Whatever we say about those victim individuals will never be enough for the lost or the trauma have been done to them. But perhaps, a voice like mine is useful somehow in putting a macro view of the matter via my "cold voice" for the better or less lives damaged outcome.
My concern in a bigger picture is the attitude of the left in Western countries towards this crisis. As a Vietnamese, from my own experience of living in a peaceful Vietnam, I absolutely have no "gratefulness" for the Western left in how they played a role in the outcome of the Vietnam War, based on their own silly naive westernized or mostly Americanised fantasy, also protested for PEACE/STOP THE WAR campaign in the 70s, along with their hippy dream of a beautiful world, bla bla bla. People who have decided they hate Israel, I've noticed for decades, generally tend to really embrace that hatred with all their hearts and souls like some embrace a religion. I'm not talking about Muslims or Arabs, just typical garden-variety western leftists, mostly from Christian European backgrounds. Often it manifests itself in really extreme and embarrassing ways. Eg. an American colleague (not Jewish) in China told me when he was traveling in Tibet he met an older couple from Israel. They were treated like garbage by most of the other mostly young Americans in their tour group just because they were Israeli, many of whom actually refused to even speak with them or share a table with them. Being a reasonable and decent man he said he kind of of "adopted" them for the remainder of the tour and made a point of always sitting with and chatting with them and at one point he apologized to them on behalf of the other *ssholes in the group. He said they were very gracious and said things like that had happened to them before on their travels, and they just tried not to take it too personally. Also I've noticed this tendency of Israel-haters who have never been there and know nothing about the actual country to make bizarre assumptions about it, eg. they think it's populated entirely by Ashkenazy Jews who "colonized" the place after 1945.

That dude has been very inaccurate throughout this video and would not be able to convince any historian. I will not point out everything because that would take too much time, but a few things:
- He fails to mention how European Jews mass migrated under British force once they took over.
- If you are a Jew born in Europe, you do not have a claim to Israel/Palestine. If you are a Jew born in Europe, you are native to europe. You can not just claim your Jewish ancestry and disregard your European ancestry. Every human has ancestry in different places, you can not just choose the one that you just like. Especially if you have not lived in a certain place for 2000 years. But even if we apply that nonsense logic, the palestinians are more closely related to the ancient Israelites than most Jews. So they still have a more valid claim to that land, especially if they already have been living in it for 1000+ years.
