I do not know which vocal coach you saw but she does nothing with her tongue to squeeze her vocal chords (If you saw Peter Barber then that is exactly what he says too), her tongue is flat in her mouth, she just has that voice, she is a Contralto the deep voice IS her voice, she has a big laryngeal space, her vocal cords are thicker than the average female and also her mouth (the inside space) is huge, her resonators are different. So do not fret trying to imitate her because no one can sound like her, as she said her self you have to be born like her in order to sing like her. The melismas at the end of the phrases are staple in Eastern and southern European traditional music and songs, Sinéad O'Connor maybe inspired by southern/eastern European vocalizations not the other way around. This is an ancient folk song so the tribal vibes are expected.

I'll recount this as best as a foreigner can from reading a few autotranslated comments as well as what some english speaking russians have talked about in the comments page of this video and it's many reactions: Igor Krutoy and Cº judges had requested that Diana sing something in russian, probably expecting a cover of some popular russian music, as to the date she had done foreign songs, like Derniere Dance, on this show. What they got was this, which is a very old, tribal, throwback to the very origins of the russian people, and a well known piece. It's sung in old russian if I'm not mystaken. To this day this very performance is considered the best child performance ever made in a talent show in Russia. To me it's special because at this age her voice had not yet dropped fully, as it does to all of us in puberty, and you have this exquisite mix of that young child voice and her rich deep natural tones which is different to her adult voice. Not better but different. She goes both lower and higher now, but her natural tone is lower. You can tell the judges were stunned. It's just a talent show, but what she sometimes brings is high art. For me, this, Can't Help Falling in Love and her recently done cover of the theme song from Dune, are the three most important performances to get her fully as an artist. Everything is good, don't get me wrong, but these song give us a fairly complete view. At least until she takes us somewhere else, she is only 20, and I have the feeling she is not done surprising us just yet. Voice for the ages.
That’s a great point you make about how her age affected how the song sounds, she still had a certain lightness to her voice here because of how young she was and if you go listen to her sing it now, it makes for a very interesting contrast. Her tone matured around like 15 years old I believe and gained more “weight” to it, for lack of better word. In my opinion though this is still the best performance of the song
@@hearingninja I have heard it yes. There is beauty in young voices that is lost with puberty (hence the castrati for example). But it is replaced with depth and power, as can be seen in her rendition of Dune. It is what it is, time waits for nobody. But she is still growing into her voice, maturing. We have not heard the full vocal wonder that she undoubtedly will be yet.

Wonderful reaction! There are many directions you can go from here with Diana. Very recently she sang with an orchestra doing a tribute to Hans Zimmer. She sang 2 songs - "No Time You Die" and a song from the soundtrack of Dune. I suggest you listen to both: the Dune song is the tribal sound you like (in spades), and the James Bond song shows that she also has a large repertoire of non-tribal songs. Both songs are on her channel and short enough for over reaction. Probably the Bond song first ...
She has a song YODELE TIME and I believe she performed that song at age 14. Another her song is YELLOW MOON, which she sounded like a voice of The Universe.

Believe me, you cannot replicate what Diana does quite naturally, because she was born with a very special set of vocal apparatuses (yes, that's the correct word 😊) Larrynx, Pharynx and nasal resonators all different to us mere mortals. Can you believe she tried out for the voice and no one turned in her blind audition. She was only like 12 and was doing an upbeat yodeling song and I think that was why no one turned but I bet the judges feel stupid now. I'm glad she kept going, she's amazing
I have discovered that trying to analyze how she is capable of these abilities is completely unnecessary because just when you think you have figured it out, she will completely flip on you and have you scratching your head all over again trying to figure that out and as we all know it is Simply a gift given to her to share with us, and which that is what she does. Everyone tries to analyze her only to later discover they were incorrect. I watched probably performance she is ever done and she is constantly changing and the more you watch her, perform the more you realize to simply stop trying to analyze her and just enjoy her gift because there is a higher power involved here

She was orphaned and the song is about an orphan girl who speaks and sings to the river Rechenka about the fact she getting married and has no parents to attend and give her away. The river doesn’t answer but simply keeps flowing; just like life. The similarities between the song and her own life are striking and it’s why the judges are in mild shock before hitting their buttons
I would recommend "Oh, it is not evening yet" from Diana, stunning performance as well. And there is a version from Pelageya which is also great, if not better.

"Rechenka" = the little river.......this is a Russian folk song of an orphaned girl (touching, as Diana spent time in a Russian orphanage) who goes to the river (the boundary between the living and the dead) to ask her deceased Mother's blessing for her upcoming marriage.
Honestly, I think it’s largely pointless trying to figure out how she sings. I’ve seen so many people who think they’ve figured it all out but they all formed their own different theories, so there’s no real way to know who among them is “correct”. One vocal coach will say she pulls her tongue back and another will point out her perfectly natural tongue position. Someone will label her a mezzo-soprano and another person calls her a contralto. Only Diana herself understands fully how she sings. Based on interviews, I can tell you for sure that it mostly comes down to anatomy. Is it possible to force yourself to sound like her? Probably, by moving around stuff in your throat, but it would never sound as natural or comfortable as it does for her. She really is just a unique singer
I do not know who called her a Mezzo but she said herself that she is a Contralto at the interview after the masked singer show so i will take her word for it. Celine Dion is a good example of a Mezzo.
@@Kwstas_Vagias Yeah, I remember seeing that interview, but there are still plenty of skeptics out there. A while ago I watched Maggie Renee (she herself is a mezzo opera singer I believe, I’m sure you’ve also seen her) and she seemed to lean towards labeling Diana as a mezzo. Others that I’ve seen straight up don’t believe that she’s a contralto and debate in the comments about the likelihood that she is actually a soprano who purposely over-darkens her sound (which tells me how little they actually know about her). Of course I ultimately trust Diana the most when it comes to knowing her voice type, it’s good enough for me if she says that she is a contralto
@@hearingninja Maggie says that because she is hell bent on believing/following the rule that in order for someone to be classified as a contralto she has to be over 30/40 years of age which does not make any sense in Diana's case. The rule over 30 has been established because the voice changes till that age on Contraltos, i can not see how Diana's voice will get lighter with age, it may become way deeper sure but lighter? So it is rather hard headed to insist on that.
@@Kwstas_Vagias I agree with you there. Vocal classification gets really ambiguous sometimes but in Diana’s case it seems pretty obvious to me how to classify her. Of course her voice is still in the process of maturing, but for a couple of years now her voice has just continuously been getting deeper and darker. I don’t foresee that changing. Generally I don’t take the skeptics too seriously anyway because they’re just confidently wrong
I think the truth of the matter is that she is a contemporary singer that defies classification, like Dimash or even Faouzia. You can sort of fit them in a classical classification but their extraordinary vocal ranges defies it. Yes she is a contralto... that goes both lower and higher than most contraltos can. At the end of the day we see her there, peerless, with the whole world trying to figure her out. Unique imo. Which is a long winded way of agreeing with you!

I'll recount this as best as a foreigner can from reading a few autotranslated comments as well as what some english speaking russians have talked about in the comments page of this video and it's many reactions: Igor Krutoy and Cº judges had requested that Diana sing something in russian, probably expecting a cover of some popular russian music, as to the date she had done foreign songs, like Derniere Dance, on this show. What they got was this, which is a very old, tribal, throwback to the very origins of the russian people, and a well known piece. It's sung in old russian if I'm not mystaken. To this day this very performance is considered the best child performance ever made in a talent show in Russia. To me it's special because at this age her voice had not yet dropped fully, as it does to all of us in puberty, and you have this exquisite mix of that young child voice and her rich deep natural tones which is different to her adult voice. Not better but different. She goes both lower and higher now, but her natural tone is lower. You can tell the judges were stunned. It's just a talent show, but what she sometimes brings is high art.
For me, this, Can't Help Falling in Love and her recently done cover of the theme song from Dune, are the three most important performances to get her fully as an artist. Everything is good, don't get me wrong, but these song give us a fairly complete view. At least until she takes us somewhere else, she is only 20, and I have the feeling she is not done surprising us just yet.

That’s a great point you make about how her age affected how the song sounds, she still had a certain lightness to her voice here because of how young she was and if you go listen to her sing it now, it makes for a very interesting contrast. Her tone matured around like 15 years old I believe and gained more “weight” to it, for lack of better word. In my opinion though this is still the best performance of the song
@@hearingninja I have heard it yes. There is beauty in young voices that is lost with puberty (hence the castrati for example). But it is replaced with depth and power, as can be seen in her rendition of Dune. It is what it is, time waits for nobody. But she is still growing into her voice, maturing. We have not heard the full vocal wonder that she undoubtedly will be yet.

Believe me, you cannot replicate what Diana does quite naturally, because she was born with a very special set of vocal apparatuses (yes, that's the correct word 😊) Larrynx, Pharynx and nasal resonators all different to us mere mortals. I have discovered that trying to analyze how she is capable of these abilities is completely unnecessary because just when you think you have figured it out, she will completely flip on you and have you scratching your head all over again trying to figure that out and as we all know it is Simply a gift given to her to share with us, and which that is what she does. "Rechenka" = the little river.......this is a Russian folk song of an orphaned girl (touching, as Diana spent time in a Russian orphanage) who goes to the river (the boundary between the living and the dead) to ask her deceased Mother's blessing for her upcoming marriage.

Honestly, I think it’s largely pointless trying to figure out how she sings. I’ve seen so many people who think they’ve figured it all out but they all formed their own different theories, so there’s no real way to know who among them is “correct”. One vocal coach will say she pulls her tongue back and another will point out her perfectly natural tongue position. Someone will label her a mezzo-soprano and another person calls her a contralto. Only Diana herself understands fully how she sings. Based on interviews, I can tell you for sure that it mostly comes down to anatomy.
Is it possible to force yourself to sound like her? Probably, by moving around stuff in your throat, but it would never sound as natural or comfortable as it does for her. She really is just a unique singer
I do not know who called her a Mezzo but she said herself that she is a Contralto at the interview after the masked singer show so i will take her word for it.
Celine Dion is a good example of a Mezzo.
@@Kwstas_Vagias Yeah, I remember seeing that interview, but there are still plenty of skeptics out there. A while ago I watched Maggie Renee (she herself is a mezzo opera singer I believe, I’m sure you’ve also seen her) and she seemed to lean towards labeling Diana as a mezzo. Others that I’ve seen straight up don’t believe that she’s a contralto and debate in the comments about the likelihood that she is actually a soprano who purposely over-darkens her sound (which tells me how little they actually know about her). Of course I ultimately trust Diana the most when it comes to knowing her voice type, it’s good enough for me if she says that she is a contralto
@@hearingninja Maggie says that because she is hell bent on believing/following the rule that in order for someone to be classified as a contralto she has to be over 30/40 years of age which does not make any sense in Diana's case.
The rule over 30 has been established because the voice changes till that age on Contraltos, i can not see how Diana's voice will get lighter with age, it may become way deeper sure but lighter?
So it is rather hard headed to insist on that.
@@Kwstas_Vagias I agree with you there. Vocal classification gets really ambiguous sometimes but in Diana’s case it seems pretty obvious to me how to classify her. Of course her voice is still in the process of maturing, but for a couple of years now her voice has just continuously been getting deeper and darker. I don’t foresee that changing. Generally I don’t take the skeptics too seriously anyway because they’re just confidently wrong
I think the truth of the matter is that she is a contemporary singer that defies classification, like Dimash or even Faouzia. You can sort of fit them in a classical classification but their extraordinary vocal ranges defies it. Yes she is a contralto... that goes both lower and higher than most contraltos can. At the end of the day we see her there, peerless, with the whole world trying to figure her out. Unique imo. Which is a long winded way of agreeing with you!
