About the song "Rechenka": This is an old ritual song about an orphan bride. The girl has no parents. The river was considered the boundary between the world of the living and the dead. She goes to the river and asks for the blessing of marriage. She says that there are many people at home, but there is no father and mother. You hear Diana singing in a whisper. These are the words of the deceased mother of the bride. Then the girl is crying. In Russia, at weddings they sang sad songs to scare away evil and the marriage of a young couple was to be happy. Such songs were called “weeping.” The figures behind Diana are spirits of water and forest.
The song "rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.
There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home.
At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family.
The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.
Thanks for the nice detailed comment. I am not aware of other versions of this song, but specifically in this version there is no mention of how the relatives of the orphan girl died. So, I am inclined to believe that the girl's mother drowned, because the river answers the girl's prayer with the voice of her mother.

К тому же, если реку воспринимать только как дорогу в мир мёртвых, то мать должна была уплыть и оставить этот мир. А тут есть ощущение, что мать слилась с рекой, здесь же и осталась в месте утопления.
Но в любом случае это лишь моя версия и не более.

Wonderful reaction! Rechenka means "the River". The song is based on Russian folksongs about a betrothed orphan girl who goes to the river (the boundary between the living and the dead) to ask her deceased mother's blessing for her upcoming wedding. The spooky whisper is her mother's reply. She laments her loveless arranged marriage, and then travels down the river to her unknown fate.
She was 14 when she sang this on the show You Are Super, a singing competition for orphaned and disadvantaged children. Diana had a horrendous start to life, being beaten, deprived, almost drowned, and then abandoned by her birth mother. During this show she had lots of difficulties with almost losing her voice, and her birth mother threatening to take Diana away (due to her new national recognition). Guards had to be placed at the studio to look out for the birth mother.

Good review. The basic story is of an orphan girl on her wedding day going to the river (the dividing line between the living and the dead) to seek her parents blessings. It's amazing that, at 14 years old, Diana could put so much emotion and longing into this performance.
The lady, dark hair, glasses, white blouse (seen just after the judges press their horn) is her adoptive mom. The firsth years Diana wouldnt perform without her. ❤❤❤

If you knew Diana's life story you would need tissues. The lady with her hands clasped in front of her is an angel on earth that resued Diana from a Russian orphanage where she worked. Diana could not talk after her abusive negligent mother left her in the cold Moscow streets with a broken collarbone at 3yrs old. Her other siblings did not survive, (7 or 8 I think). Her family did not want her and put her in an orphanage. They thought she was defective in some way. Her adopted mother put her in singing lessons to help her develop speech. She overcame immense odds to get where she is today. Truly a miracle.

Oooo! I love this so much. I've seen/heard it multiple times and it stops me in my tracks every time. The story is that she is a young girl whose mother has passed. She is to be married and she has come to the river to speak to her mother's spirit that lives there. It is ancient and filled with magic and spirits etc. are everywhere. Diana is always good for a vocal surprise. And here you have a lot of them. Even the judges can't believe what they're hearing.
A singing teacher once commented on this song that if he wrote down all the singing techniques Diana uses here, he would have a list of all the singing techniques.
The song is about an orphan who is about to get married and goes to the river to talk to her parents and ask for their blessing. The river is the connection to the world of the dead. The celebration can be heard in the background. That's the swinging part of the music. You probably already know that Diana was in an orphanage. It seems to be her song. Hence all the emotions she expresses admirably here.
Diana's acting, the scenery, the dancers. This is musical theatre - at its best.

Diana is magical. A couple of English titles you would like are her covers of Take On Me and Human. I'd encourage you to listen to Revelation (Mood Video), and it's in Russian. She has two uploads on her official RUclips channel but the other one is a lyric video in Russian. It was released a Month ago and it's a Diana original and has quality English subtitles. People familiar with Diana's back story knows this is a song she wrote about her life.

At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far Eastern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak without impediment. Only two years later she started singing in local theater, and in street plays and performances. And soon after was entered in a Russian TV music competition for disadvantaged children. By the age of 10 she was winning local competitions, singing on live TV shows, and her songs started showing up on RUclips. A year ago, at the age of 18, her first performance during a new Russian television competition with several other renowned performers, has gone viral and has garnered hundreds of RUclips 'reaction' videos, and millions of viewers. It's good that you explain the song for them. The versions I have seen with captions are just "word salad" with no meaning. Also, notable in this version, her voice isn't affected at all by being picked up and set into the boat. That's amazing control. I first watched this about 3 years ago and had to find out more. She is one of my top 3 favorite performers. I didn't care much for Pugacheva's version and it was, as you say, very different.

This song is about a girl in her wedding day. She is sad because she has no father or mother to bless her in such a day so she goes to sit by a little river to ask its blessings instead as water sources and water flows had magics and powers.
That airy grunt is the voice of the spirit of the little river or stream and the bouble hammering vibrato (kind of yodeling) has a spiritual calling meaning too. A work of art.
