  • In this video I will be lifting a car for the first time with my new Quick Jack BL-7000SLX. This is a portable at home garage lift. This lift will make wheel off details, polishing and automotive repair much easier for me and my body. I decided to go with the 7000 lb model so I can lift SUV's and trucks.

    Regarding the leaking fittings issue, I had similar issues with mine. My solution was strip the whole system apart. Completely clean the threads on all fittings, and then put Loctite 545 in the threads and re-tighten. I've had ZERO leaks since, amazing stuff.

    I got my 7000 SLX quick jack few days ago, tried them, I am very pleased. they are heavy to move them around and place them under the car, so I watched a video for some one who fitted small wheels under the frame using zip ties to secure them, I did that, and it is really easy to move the stands around, I highly recommend using small wheels to easily move them around.

    Something I've experienced is that when using Teflon tape on the threaded hydraulic fittings, be absolutely aware if there's any of the tape getting into the fittings themselves. You'll be guaranteed a leak from even the tiniest piece of the tape getting inside. That's why you should begin winding at the second thread. BTW, I purchased the 3500 series but sold the car (Miata) before ever using them and got the 7000 TLX frames (using the original power unit, as it works with all frames) for my Chevy Colorado and absolutely recommend them. Still have the 3500 frames ;-) Also, instead of the really expensive truck towers, I found some short 2-ton jackstands which fit, along with the short pinch-weld blocks and it's a very affordable and safe alternative.

    One important caution from a fellow QuickJack user. I unwittingly discovered a "false lock" state can be created which supports a vehicle, but can unpredictably break free. The usual locking mechanism works great and is very solid and stable. However, if you advance the QJ up just a little further before going back down to engage the locking bar, the cam can also pass over the stop point. When you go down with cam also past the locking point, instead of jamming the locking bar's cup into the locking point, the CAM can jam instead. That "false lock" did support my car's weight, but it is through the cam and its pivot pin instead of the secure lock normally created by the locking bar. The false lock looks OK from a distance, and it supported 4,000 lbs. It's just not at all secure. The cam can unpredictably pivot upward out of of the stop and the cam's pivot hinge is taking all the load. Just one nudge of the car and it could break free.
    Always go up until ONLY the end of the locking bar gets past a stop. Never let the cam also go over.
    In my opinion the cam should be reshaped so it can NEVER jam against a stop to create a "false lock." It simply should not be possible. When mine broke free, the locking bar luckily caught against the stop as the QJ dropped. Thankfully, I wasn't under the car and the drop didn't unsettle the lift blocks.
    I have reported this unsafe condition to QuickJack and also filed a report with CPSC.gov (20201128-2FEEE-2147367840) to help ensure proper follow up. The safest solution would be to reshape the cam so it simply can never form a "false lock" and retrofit all existing Quickjacks with new "false lock" proof cams.

    • @FABAutomotiveDetailing
      @FABAutomotiveDetailing  3 года назад

      That is good information! I never let the cam get over the locking bar. As soon as both arm go over I stop and let it down to lock in place.

    • @trueEMR
      @trueEMR 3 года назад +1

      @@FABAutomotiveDetailing I didn't run into it until one day when I was originally going to lift to full height, but decided I only need the 1st stop. I let it down to the 1st stop and it happened. I agree, we're usually naturally stopping going up once the locking arms clank over the stop. So 99/100 times you'll never let the cam go past the stop, but if you do...... Yikes!

      I’ve had my QJ for 3 years, they work great. I use them on all makes of cars, vans and trucks/suv’s. I put a set of jack rails from Steeda on my Mustang so the lift blocks don’t touch the plastic trim on rocker panel, and you don’t have to lift on pinch welds. The rails are a little lower than pinch welds. A good rule to follow is, if it has a frame, lift on it so not to stress body mounts. Lift by pinch welds only if it is a uni-body vehicle.

I have a Race Deck floor in my garage making them slide a lot easier which is a pro. The con is they can get away from you pushing them just as easy. thomkirby The truck adaptors don’t but it won’t crush them. They are the same pads I have on my 2 post at work and I lift in the pinch welds everyday.

    thank you so much for posting the video. does it tell you in the specs how high off the ground would it lift a car using the blocks, and a truck using that special adaptor you showed us?

    • @FABAutomotiveDetailing
      @FABAutomotiveDetailing  2 года назад

      It doesn’t say that I know of. I would say it lifts with the adaptors about 30 inches or so off the ground.

    After bleeding it it goes up pretty even (left frame 1,2 inches faster than right) but when coming down right frame would be already on the ground while left frame is still 7 inches up (not with a car, so far only tested with me on it) Normal?

    • @FABAutomotiveDetailing
      @FABAutomotiveDetailing  4 года назад +1

      Okaythen001 Check and make sure both cylinders have atleast 40PSI air pressure in them. If they do I would do the hydraulic bleed again until no air comes out. Once a car is on the lift it will probably come down normal.

    I been putting cars on lifts for nearly 10 years now... I would never lift a Body-On-Frame vehicle by the body/pinch welds... We always lift by the frame, this does not overstress the body mounts?

    • @FABAutomotiveDetailing
      @FABAutomotiveDetailing  2 года назад +1

      Only time I use pinch welds is cars or light SUV’s. Anything larger I use the frame like I did in this video. It won’t stress the body mounts on smaller vehicles I have been lifting them like that now for close to 20 years now.

    I can't tell from the video but does the car go straight up or does it move forward or backward as it goes up?

    • @nhra7110
      @nhra7110 2 года назад +1

      Due to the geometry of the frames, QJ does not lift the vehicle straight up like a true 2-post, but rather in an arc (aka, radial shift). The vehicle can move 10-14" forward or backward (depending on how the frames are oriented) at the second lock position . Radial shift is obviously less at the first lock position.

    The Quickjacks are great if you're lucky and get one without a defective air cylinder. If you do get one of those you're screwed - the company will 100% not stand behind their product. They'll claim the air-assist down isn't "necessary to the function of the lift". Really? So if one side has air assist down and the other doesn't, and they drop unevenly, that's safe? And then when the vehicle drops to the ground and one side of the lift goes straight to the full down position while the other... doesn't. You need to wait... and wait... and wait for it to drop with no weight on it. Quickjack will claim this "is normal operation" and that "it will get better over time". If you invest a massive amount of time trying to get them to stand behind their product they will, eventually, after burning through every once of customer goodwill, send out a new cylinder. Yay! Until you get the replacement and the freakin' air side is literally capped off. Like intentionally made unusable. That's not a fix guys. Then they'll claim that the engineers decided the down-assist wasn't necessary and that they've changed the design on future models. But I didn't buy a future model with less functionality. I bought the current model with exactly the functionality I wanted, was promised, and paid for. Whatever. Too much time wasted on it already - I've written off the entire company as another skanky marketing hack with no integrity. I still have it in my shop, but the company worked very hard to make me regret my purchase and it low-key pisses me off every time I look at it.

      Joe Park Funny you mention that because last week when I used it the one cylinder was completely out of air so it wouldn’t rise or lower correctly.

    • @FABAutomotiveDetailing

      Not sketchy at all! They are perfectly safe and gets the vehicle higher off the ground and allows you to hit the frame on trucks.

    I'm looking to purchase this very lift but I'm curious if I would have to buy the extension kit as well. My smallest wheelbase car is a Mini Cooper. It should lift that very easily. It's my 2015 Honda Odyssey Lx that I'm wondering if I need the extensions for. What's your opinion?

    • @FABAutomotiveDetailing
      @FABAutomotiveDetailing  4 года назад +1

      Brian Basinski I would say most likely yes you would need the extension. The lifting points on the Odyssey’s are pretty far apart.
