I seen one of these episodes where the inmate was super nice, like take home to mother nice, and the response he got from the kid was better than the ones where they just scream and yell at the kids. I can see a handful of kids responding well to something like this but majority just need someone to treat them like a human being instead of being treated awful. In one episode the kid was acting out because he didn't have a father figure so one of the guards even took it upon himself to go and visit him and do fatherly things with him

She ended up being brought to the same prison her mother was locked up in and met her in the yard when all the kids were being moved between units. It was crazy, girl got the lesson there on the yard and still had to go through the rest of the thing.
This show was so wild, I remember watching this. But a lot of the inmates that do the program actually volunteer in order to prevent these teens from ending up like them. They put on the “scary tough guy” act trying to scare these kids into staying outta jail. The gentler inmate approach sometimes worked better because love is what these kids really need at home. Didn’t usually work though. It normally boiled down to bad parenting.
I've always hated the guards for getting up the kids faces. I always rooted the kids on when they fight back because you deserve what's coming to you if you get in someone's face like that no matter what. Not to mention this kind of approach to troubled youth has been proven to be ineffective.

Not always. I went through a period where I acted out and it wasn't anything that my parents did. I just did whatever I wanted to do even when my parents tried to discipline me and change their parenting style.

The parents didn't hit their kids in this show. They're just burned out not knowing what to do with them. The inmates didn't hit them either, but they yell at them, get in their faces, and curse at them to scare them straight. They're trying to save them from ending up in the legal system. They did speak calmly and friendly to them after the kids are broken down.
Hey Caleb the very first Scared Straight was actually a documentary back in 1978. It was very memorable and some of the language isn't considered PC nowadays obviously but it's a great docu and its hosted by Danny Glover!

His older brother was my ex, when they went back home to their parents for a while, my ex ended up k!ll!ng himself because of the mental/physical abus3 their dad put them thru, as a child and well into their adulthood. Kids can be stressed. yes adults (generally speaking) have more responsibilities. Although kids do have stressors such as school, home life, peer pressure, work, bullying. Depending on the kid there could be more serious issues such as abuse, in any form. ECT.
I never understand how people think this helps? It’s known to have about a higher chance of doing absolutely nothing, And at worse scarring that kid for life causing their bad behaviors to only increase. Producers are not prepared for a kid to take a man's eye-sight and certainly can't prevent any physical repercussions to the kids when guards are provoked, the crew is prisoners till they get their story straight.
