The Great Bagel Rivalry

- There’s no food as synonymous with New York as the bagel-soft, chewy, doughy, with a generous schmear. But one city is giving the Empire State a run for its money. Welcome to Montreal, Canada, where the bagels are a little crispier, a little sweeter, but no less iconic. Still, the question stands: which bagel reigns supreme? We hit up New York’s legendary H&H Midtown East and Montreal’s famous St-Viateur to get to the bottom of the battle of the bagels.

You cannot discuss bagels without mentioning their place of origin: Kraków, Poland. Bagels were originally made by Jewish communities in Kraków and they are still widely sold from street carts all around town for around 1zł (0.3$) a piece. Kraków's bagels (or "obwarzanek", as they are widely known in Polish) have the status of a regional protected food of European Union and are one of the symbols of the city. Kraków's bagels are a little bit wider and harder than the American variant, and tend to be eaten solo, mostly as a quick snack by frugal students moving from lecture to lecture within the city. Nevertheless, they are a quality in their own right.
True^^^. and I dont think that is a disputed fact if you go to New York. They acknowledge the origins of bagels from Poland. After all, it was the Jewish immigrants and refugees that brought about the bagel boom in NY. :) I dont know much about the bagel culture and craze in Montreal, but i heard they were tasty as well.
That's nice to hear. I have tried the Montreal version, and I liked it. Trying the NY version is still ahead of me :)
Kraków has no Jews so I doubt bagels are all that common there.
Kraków for hundreds of years used to be 25% Jewish, and it currently hosts one of the largest annual Jewish Culture Festivals in the world.
im jewish american and just wasin europe for 1 year when i visitedPOLANDDAMN there bagels are pure bliss honestly just so convient and practical to snack on and very filling

The real shame is that Montréal's Liberté dairy was bought off and they stopped producing their cream cheese a year ago. The real Montréal bagel experience was complete with it's own local cream cheese, Liberté. Phily just doesn't cut it.
Ain't nothing better than walking into st-viateur or fairmount and walking out with a dozen of freshly-baked, still warm montreal bagels. It's literally impossible to get back home without a couple missing out of the bag on the way.
Especially during winters! Warm Montreal bagels during winter is unbeatable
Wish I hadn't seen a bagel get toasted near the end.
Both styles are fine. The best bagel can be found at your local place that puts in the effort to make them properly. The big catch is that you have to eat it within an hour of it coming out of the oven when it's in peak condition. That's pretty much the reason why the "best" bagels are found in large metropolitan areas like NYC and Montreal - They sell very high volumes, so there's a good chance that you're getting a fresh bagel.
I would say Montreal bagels age a bit better

North Jersey bagels are much better believe me
It's almost like gluten is a polymer.
It's the cold lighting, NYC bagel shops don't care about having warm light to make the food look good, it's a grab and go to work food.
Montreal! I had their bagels once. Delicious! The shop smells amazing.
You could definitely get a bagel like that in Montreal if you went somewhere else. There are lots of great bagel places. I’ve never had a New York bagel but I always loved bagels here and I didn’t know they were famous.

lohphat the added sweetness is VERY mild and subtle, but provides a delicious contrast to the salty cream cheese and lox that one would often top it with. New York bagels are good but just way too doughy.
They aren't that sweet. Really, it's a very slight sweetness, and only on the bagel's crust.

Oui! Les bagels à New York regarde si artificel et sucré. Mais au Montréal, plus précisement au St-Viateur, ils sont naturel et fait par la main. C'est peut-être ce qui les rend si bons, parce que ils est fait avec beaucoup de patience et amour. :)

roof pizza Montreal’s recipe is from Poland but is what a bit modified.
No where really. In MTL we only get them in bagel shops, u cant get them at any grocery store.
Actually you can, St Viateur bagels are sold in many supermarkets. But really it is best to go the bagel shops where it is hot from the oven!
We don't have Bagels in my country but my dad loves Bagels. So I make them for him at home. Should try the Honey-Water next time ☺️
“I don’t care for the New York bagels and neither does my family”
We weren't asking but okay damn.
Not only are their bagels delicious, but St-Viateur Bagel is also open 24/7, so you can stumble in after a night of partying and order some bagels. Right out of the oven, crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. Perfection!
Born and raised in Montreal. I’ve had New York bagels and I can sorta see the appeal. But St. Viateur bagels are the best thing ever. Hands down.

I'm from America but I like montreal's bagels because of texture and flavor and it baked in wood fire.

I was born in Montreal and I always keep talking shit about how it seems to have very little places that are worthwhile in terms of food. I just recently discovered Tsukuyomi, one of the best ramen restaurants near st-laurent, candylabs, a place in McGill that makes hard candy right in front of you, and now I absolutely have to try these bagels. Give Montreal’s food treasures more damn recognition!
Nero Crescendo what? Montreal has some of the best food in the world! Are you really from Montreal of some guy from Laval that just says he’s from Montreal
Nero Crescendo you need to try Cantinho Express, its on boulevard Henri-bourassa. Its a Portuguese fast food type place and its AMAZING!
Thanks for this video
As a New Yorker you got to get locks, capers, scallion cream cheese, tomatoes and onion and you got yourself heaven
I grew up in Toronto where both varieties are widely available (there isn’t really a Toronto-specific variant). The very slight sweetness of the Montreal bagel provides a delicious contrast to salty cream cheese. Heavenly. New York bagels are perhaps more filling, but overly chewy and crumbly. One thing I notice is that the quality of NY-style bagels vary much more from bakery to bakery than MTL bagels, I guess because it is the more common variety.
I'm a baker at a Canadian bagel shop in Ontario that makes Montreal style bagels so I personally hand roll dough and work in a similar wood burning oven however we all have a deli side that makes custom cream cheese and makes sandwiches with the bagels aswell
Team Montreal style bagels for the win lol
So it's kinda best of both worlds at my work, u could walk up and order a dozen of un cut bagels or get a sandwich.
I'm so happy they did this with st.viateur instead of fairmont

New Yorkers are crazy about their bagels, and they do have the great cream cheese and smoked salmon combo.
But if you want to have a great bagel on its own, or with some butter or cream cheese, go to Montreal or Istanbul. Sesame bagels in New York don't come close to those two city's sesame bagels.
Every state has their weird rivalry’s
👌
WHY NOT BOTH?
I think you have to have tried both to have a say here; if you've only ever had a NYC bagel, of course you're going to prefer it to something you've never experienced! I've had both, and Montreal bagels win, hands down. I used to walk to Fairmount in the wee hours of the morning, and grab a half dozen bagels (with a chocolate chip one to eat on the walk home)
same here.... funny how lots say they prefer something without trying the other one
I used to work at a bagel factory and we would make thousands per day. One thing i saw was that they are all the same bagels just different packaging. So if you see a bag of bagels at the 99 cent and at your supermarket they are the same bagels just different bags
I live in Montreal and lemme say, our bagels are kickers
