      Y6B and A Class N&W Steamers are available in HO and O. MTH Makes an A class and a Y6B. I'm not sure who the HO manufacturers are, but I know they are out there. I had an MTH A Class, but sold it to get a Y6B which I still have. It's my coal hauler. Search for O gauge of HO gauge Y6B on You Tube and you'll find videos of them. Or Google it.

      g bridgman do by chance happen to have an HO scale FEF?

    • @ktrainBFS
      @ktrainBFS 8 лет назад +1

      that you could sell to me?

    • @1940limited
      @1940limited 8 лет назад +1

      I don't have any HO trains, at least not for sale. My layout is O gauge. Go to ebay and search for UP FEF in HO. I bet you'll find some. I assume that's what you're looking for? A 4-8-4? Any particular road name? I assumed Union pacific, but maybe I'm wrong.

    Amazing: when passing the Y6b at the front of the train, from 0.59 to 1:06 the raising steam from the helper at the rear is visible and gives an impression of the length of this train. Excellent video! Thank you!

    @david245611 Actually, the Y class engines had an entirely different sound. They had a "slosshy" sound which you can hear in this preview. The A class has a sharper exhaust. The Y class could run in either compound or simple settings and each of those had a different sound. If you go to the preview of Pocahontas Glory Vol. 7, you can hear actual sounds of a Y6 on a mine run where it was recorded in both compound and simple operation.

      Steam boat whistles? The Mallets (and the "A"s) use hooter whistles.

    As a Brit it always comes as a bit of a shock at the sheer size of the locos and the lengths of the trains. Impressive shots in this video, pretty countryside as well. Great stuff !

    With a modern fleet and unlimited source of fuel, N&W steam could have run well into the 70's, if not longer.

      PRR5406 Yep Why dieselize when we are burning the product we carry? John Henry was not an impressive display I was told but minus extra crew, Greasing,Water and all that diesel made sense money wise.We were still the last steam Railroad in America.

      Those companies that catered to the steam locomotive, and sold appliances like the feedwater pump, turbo generator, cold water pump etc, and all the various parts that went to them, would all be going out of business! N&W would've had to make all replacements in-house! Business-wise it simply made good economic sense to retire steam.

    Your 5 inch gauge Y6b is also awesome! Since you like N&W and Y6 class engines, check out the preview of Pocahontas Glory Volume 7, also here on You Tube. You'll find Y6 class locos in all of the Pocahontas Glory videos plus A, J, K, M, and S1 class steam power, all in actual service in the 1950's. We ship to Germany frequently. -JH

    @IllinoisTrains1 if you properly bank the fire, a steam locomotive can go a day or two without attention. By that i mean they can sit idle with a hot fire to keep pressure at a certain level. this saves coal and eliminates the need for a night hostler. It must be done properly though or it wont work correctly. steam does have its efficiencies over diesels too, but the overall easy diesel out modes steam efficiencies.

    i want this dvd

  • @IllinoisTrains1
    @IllinoisTrains1 13 лет назад +2

    @kmothersil To answer your question it is just the problem of economics. Steam locomotives are extremely labor instensive and require constant attention. With desiels you can just turn them off for the night and walk away, something you can't do with steam. Plus steam uses a lot of coal (or oil) and water to keep pressure that must be refilled often. Desiels in some application can go their entire trip without refueling. I, like you, would rather see steam but I understand why we don't see steam

    why did n&w use auxes?

  • @JBofBrisbane
    @JBofBrisbane 13 лет назад

    @tradomanico - I'm willing to bet that garbage has a much lower calorific content than even lignite coal, let alone anthracite. You would simply have to carry too much of the stuff to give the loco a reasonable range before refuelling.

    Why don't they find a way to transform garbage into fuel (by using a process the least detrimental to nature) instead of dumping it in the environment.
    Steam locomotives could come back in a more modern type using this cheap type of fuel.
