- Order from herronrail.com. N&W 1950's steam action in Cincinnati, Portsmouth, Bonsack, Roanoke and more with live sound on much of it, even turbine Jawn Henry! Finishes with Y6a 2136 on the Pigeon Creek mine run in late 1958. Engine classes include A, Y, S1a, J, K2, K2a and more. 78 minutes of great N&W steam available at www.herronrail.com (Herron Rail Video) DVD can be viewed with or without narration and it has chapters. Also includes previews of the other 6 volumes.
My family lived in the Washington DC area in the period 1956- 1959. I remember the NBC broadcast in 1958 when John Cameron Swayze announced the last long distance passenger train run under steam. It was of course the N&W J. I remember that broadcast like it was yesterday- so sad, even as a young man I knew that the railroads would never be the same again.
Reg mason232 I live in the DC suburbs.
The Jawn Henry is even more impressive on film. I don't think I've ever seen video of it before.
Beautiful... As someone born in 1958, it's nice to see this very realistic depiction ( color + great sound ) of these wonderful machines. Saddens me to think most of them now scrapped.
Sadly, Ralph Morse passed away a couple of months ago. He was 93 years old. You're right though, he was a great narrator and was active with a theatre group until last year.
Thanks for asking. -Jim Herron
He was the John Facenda of train videos...
Danny Harmon is the narrator for herron rail right now from distat signal
Did you mean to ask WHY is the K2 class shrouded like the J class? The answer is because the N&W liked the design and felt they could use more streamlined engines to fill out their needs of passenger train power. The J class created an image that the railroad believed help attract passengers so why not extend that image to all of their main line trains? There were also branch line passenger and mixed trains that were pulled by non-streamlined engines such as Pacifics and 4-8-0's.
i would give anything to see these engines and any other steamers running again full time!
Well, N&W J 611 is coming back to steam for her second excursion career as part of Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Steam program.
What great stuff! I need to have this one. I was always interested in the Jawn Henry Sadly I was too busy with 'other things' to go see the 611 when it ran in fan trip service and too young to have see any of the others.
How sad that Jawn Henry was scrapped with all the other steam turbines from PRR, C&O etc. couldn't they have saved ONE?? Even one rusting away is better than none at all imho. Look at SteamTown as a shining example of a locomotive graveyard.
Great to see these under steam!
The Jawn Henry was complex and expensive-to say nothing about inefficient-and was scrapped at about the same time that the N & W finally committed to dieselization with steam replacement parts becoming scarce...
Glad to know that we have some footage of Jawn Henry
Norfolk & Western railroad used steam up to 1961. I have the
book entitled The last steam railroad in America, it's about the
Steam engines of the Norfolk & Western. The streamlines J class
Steam engines and even some hot the streamlined K class steam
engines are some of the most beautiful streamlined steam engines
Ever built and ever ran. Saving J class number 611 and running 611 on excursions is great.
+Christopher O'Rourke Actually, the last N&W steam run was in early May, 1960 out of Williamson, WV with Y6b 2190 although one of the S!a switchers may have been alive for another day or two in the yard there.
Steam era ended in May 1960 when N&W S1a 0-8-0 #290 dropped her fire for the last time. Between 1960 and 1970, tens of thousands of diesels replaced steam locomotives on Mark I, II, and III railroads. N&W only ran a couple Y class engines from 1961 - 1962 before reporting their final retirement in early winter 1963.
i was so hyped to see the jawn henry!

611 N&W in 1982 0:19 ❤️💜❤
I love the K mountains and S1s.
@hrvideo Didn't they find one of these sitting in a company building somewhere? Looks familiar. Seems to me it was sent there and forgotten. I love the shrouding, though! reminds me of the Hiawathas from Milwaukee road! Alsways loved that steam streamine look!
@hrvideo I knew it said Jawn Henry, just wanted to know more about the locomotive! It was very interesting and would have loved to seen that in action!
It's good to see a steam turbine in action :)
A simply epic vidoe
0:20 611
Cool
1:23 210’s warning bell doesn’t appear to be ringing but the sound of it can be heard
Watch a video clip of CB&Q O-5 No. 5632 on a fantrip out of Chicago from the DVD program Reflections of American Railroading, produced by Herron Rail Video.
If 1218 is ever brought back and NS allows her to run their rails again( a miracle from Heaven) like their doing with 611, 4501 and 765 now, I would be more happy to see her run free under own power again because the A's could conquer anything that the J's couldn't do like their articulated ability to maneuver tight curves and pull long trains almost up to a hundred cars without breaking a sweat. Just a perfect type bread and butter locomotive that any railroad and engineer would want to have to run with for special excursions that run in especially steep grades and mountains when a running long trains.
I was told wile riding 611 that if they finish the engine house fundraiser and the funds to keep 611 running they might consider restoring 1218
its unlikely but it is a possibility
i've seen one other clip of the Jawn Henry but it appeared to be waiting its turn on a siding and was fired up but not making any sound
When is the complete Pocahantas Glory series going to be on youtube? I have only seen volumes 1, 7 and 8 listed on here.
They are not going on YT. These are previews of DVDs that are for sale.
@ThePete352
youre right man
it did look more like a diesel
but it's a shame it got scrapped
The Jawn Henry was such an interesting locomotive, too bad they didn't preserve him.
Nice. I'll have to get this.
@hrvideo Nope cause "Hooters on Blue Ridge" has film and sound of 2300. But yes it was an experimental unit that was scrapped late in 1957.
Great history.

That is the big honkin' N&W turbine jawn henry.
Which music was in the intro of n&w volume 1??
@HaloCE14 im saying a frisco mountian can be dressed up as a K2 mountian if that ok with you
Where can I buy these videos? This looks awesome! Im from Jersey, but Ive always been a huge fan of N&W steam!
I have all 7 volumes, just trying not to boast, but their all great, showing the last stand against the diesels.
I'm waiting for Volume 8 of Pocahontas Glory
When Steam was king 🚂
Yes
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore; not they. Not like they did back in 1954!
@HaloCE14 but you can find a 4-8-2 and dress it up as a k1. 104 was my favorite k
What in the world is that hug weird looking engine at 2:28? I've never seen anything like that?
there is one o gauge model of k2a 133 with streamlined casing
were can i order this from?! this is awsome!
The era of roller bearings modern component steam locomotives. Sadly it didn’t survive

@WorldOfNothin
well check out the wikipeida article on Jawn Henry.
Any model railroaders out there, there's HO scale models of K2a 4-8-2 133. Check it out.
@0:18 OH MY GOD ITS THE 611 SHE'S STILL ON THE MAIN
What ashame that Norfolk & Western Destroyed the Jawn Henry Turbine Locomotive. They Should have donated it to a museum for history. WHY????????
and jawn henry also there sister
@HaloCE14 nah, how bout 1519
136 and 133 are actually shrouded 4-8-2 mountains
their shrouds look like the 611 and the J class 4-8-4 northerns
if 1366 and 133 are sisters like the Js then their girls. LOL!!!
1:37-1:56
I think all the steam locos in parks and museums should be pulled out and restored and use diesels to take their place in the parks and playgrounds. Lots of employment for men and women plus locomotives with more character than current diesels. Must go now need medication. Ha ha. Great video tho. 👍👍😃👨🏼✈️😀

they should restore #2156 to operation. it would be easier at this point than bringing back 611, or god forbid 1218.
And they went and restored 611, GG Norfolk Southern, GG.
What's up with this "GG"? I've been seeing it a lot... What does it mean in this case? The only GG I know is "good game".
@@09JDCTrainMan good God. Probably.
