When my father was young his family lived beside the railroad track in eight mile AL. I miss his stories of the steam trains and the first diesel engine that come down to Mobile and what a big deal people along the tracks to see.

1957 for us in the Uk was still a steam dominated time. But it was the first year significant numbers of diesel locos were intrduced onto the UK rail network. DMUS came in force at the end of 1956

The Norfolk & Western rr had an impressive variety of steam power back during the steam era , i always enjoy seeing footage of steam locomotives in operation as this is a distant era. The J class 4-8-4 engines along with the A and Y class articulated types were the most popular examples of N&W steam power, along with the K class Mountain type engines of which some engines were later streamlined in the late 1940s similar to the J class locomotives in their appearance.

Norfolk & Western Y Class 2156 has a cracked frame alongside the fact that Norfolk & Western Class A 1218 has missing parts. Thankfully we have Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 running at Union Pacific’s Steam Program at Cheyenne Wyoming and most excitingly, Union Pacific Challenger 3985 bing restored at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvis Illinois.
