The Last Human - A Glimpse Into The Far Future

  • Because of the potential size of the future, the most important thing about our actions today might be their impact on future generations. This simple-sounding idea has some surprising moral implications: 80000hours.org...

    The future of humanity seems insecure. Rapid climate change, political division, our greed and failings make it hard to look at our species with a lot of optimism and so many people think our end is in sight. But humans always thought they lived in the end times. Every generation assumes they’re important enough to witness the apocalypse and then life just goes on.
    This is a problem because it leads to short term thinking and prevents us from creating the best world for ourselves and our descendants. What makes this worse is that we actually may live at an extremely critical moment in human history. To understand why, let us look at the temporal window of humanity and ask:
    When will the last human be born and how many people will there ever be?

    HUGE announcement: we are launching Kurzgesagt in six more languages! Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Hindi, Japanese and Korean, on top of our English, German and Spanish channels: linktr.ee/kgs_international
    This is where we need YOUR help. It takes us a lot of time, effort and yes, money to translate our videos properly and run so many channels - so to make this sustainable, please help us spread the word! If you are a native in one of these languages, share our videos on social media and tell your friends and family - make people in your native language aware that it exists. Thanks so much for your support!

    • @sonkeschmidt2027
      @sonkeschmidt2027 2 года назад +293

      Technically that's true but equally more problems mean more solutions.
      The interesting bit is to get the solutions across. A whale has many many more cells than a human, yet a human has a very different experience because of the way the cells are communicating with each other. Existence exists because it can and it will create everything that is possible. And everything is possible infinity.
      What's relevant to us right now is how we communicate with each other because that is what shapes our experience and makes the difference between a shitty and a great experience. It is all about how we connect. With ourselves, our humanity, with earth, with the universe, with everything. Limits are finite and therefore inherently temporary. So that what truly is is unlimited and never ending. And if we recognise ourselves in that, we are too =)

      Kurgestagt has realized that people who have been slain by the apathy sword are the people that wanted to help the future. The apathy sword is a term I have invented for the way you try to stop people by convincing them everything is awful and hopeless. If you cant see it, then you cant fight it. In politics its called wedging.
      Theyre trying to form a shield of science and perspective. Something to fight the invisible sword. Perspective.
      *Its not optimism.* Perspective is everything. Here is an example:
      Life has been trapped on this sphere because of its gravity well forever. The dinosaurs had some absurd amount of time to try to evolve out of it, and no one did anything. Life was essentially doomed. Until Humans. We are lifes hope to escape this prison. We are its champions.
      And under that perspective, you basically cant go wrong unless you've eliminated all life. Even destroying the earth but getting some life off it could be considered a victory of humanity.
      Theyre just trying to help people see things differently, because people have been taught everythings awful, and it really can be argued against.

    • @Elemblue2
      @Elemblue2 2 года назад +1

      @@subz9192 Perspectivism is level 3 of optimism. Its significantly less misguided.

    This is why I often find myself wondering about the mystery of the far future with a touch of melancholy.
    So many things I will never get to see, so many things that we can only dream about now being mundane reality in the future.
    But also with optimism: we got so far because of the ones that came before us. Through their sacrifice and hard work we went from, as the video so eloquently put it, "worshipping the moon, to walking on it". Look at all the things we have acomplished together as the human race, and all the things we've built, all the technology that sometimes is nearly indistinguishable from magic, and then just imagine the things we will create in the far future. I get shivers just thinking about it.
    My only wish is to maybe someday be reborn again somehow, to see it all, or at least some of it. But for now all we can do is make the most of what we have now while leaving another stepping stone in our history on which future humans can step on to go even further than any one of us alive today could ever dream of going. ❤️

    "The last human born" is such an intriguing concept. I wonder with technology, biological and/or digital enhancements throughout the centuries if our very distant grand children would even be considered "human" by our limited perspective.

    • @007sephiroth1
      @007sephiroth1 2 года назад

      As you say, at that point what even is a human? What does it mean to be a human? Is it necessary to constrain ourselves entirely to the natural course of evolution? Genetic technologies allowing us to create new lifeforms that can thrive in completely different atmospheric environments is already within our grasp using CRISPR and its coming research. Leaving earth isn't even that difficult either, assuming we become serious about energy development and deployment using nuclear power. We are already positioned for starting colonies on Mars and the moon, with the right planning we can build a interplanetary communications and resource management system using specialized space stations, robotic systems, mining tools, magnetic rail slingshots on low gravity moons / worlds, development of megastructures like the stellar engine or Dyson sphere... there is so much potential for our people.

      If you think there will be 11 billion people in 2100, you simply do not understand the implications of climate change. There are some seriously bad decades coming, and few of the old rules will apply. Now there actually is a mechanism for the 'end times'.

      Yes but tbh would be nice if average citizen would start thinking by themselves and not by reading a clickbait article where they just throw "SCIENTISTS WARN OF HORRIBLE TERRIBLE DISASTROUS APOCALYPTIC LIFE ENDING" bluh bluh bluh nonsense. Those articles make it seem as if they quoting everything every scientist every said, while actually scientists don't say bs like that and they never say "the end is nigh". Better read actual scientific reports, with data and estimations given, ofc the hard part is that average citizen would need to do logical thinking of what would it mean. Scientist would show estimations of ecological impacts on species and changes for the ecosystems. Climate change does not even possess any extinction level danger for humanity, only for some sensitive animal and plant species, which those clickbait articles turn to be extinction for everyone and the average person takes the bait without taking more research. After just a bit of research u don't even need to make sure something is over exaggerated, u just know it after seeing the title and reading couple sentences into. Yes climate change still is bad, i'd say it's better to save those animal species if we can. Plastic pollution + acidity in oceans are also big issues for marine biology.
      People shouldn't need this video to know the possibilities of humanity, plus even before this video this channel posted many future of humanity videos where they show what kind of civilization humanity cold be in the distant future and tbh very realistic future.

    This video made me feel so much better about ourselves and our existence, while putting into perspective how important these times still are, despite potentially being the beginning of something unfathomably bigger. Thank you for making this video and I really appreciate how you translated to other languages, now I can introduce this channel to my parents!

      You don't need pseudo science to take a positive perspective. You can go back to geocentric idea where humans were in the center in the universe. From the mathematical perspective it can be done.
      You can also assume that humans are only one inteligent form in the universe.

      Anybody doing an honest research since WWI and doesn't think mankind is on a path to self destruction is delusional.
      Either divine intervention or some advanced extra terrestrial beings will be needed to save this current situation of mankind.

We have no less than 19 cures for cancer. We are going to mars. We just did proof of concept on cold fusion! We can grow 100x as much food in the same space as 100 yrs ago.
