You and nine other individuals have been captured by super-intelligent alien overlords. The aliens think humans look quite tasty, but their civilization forbids eating highly logical and cooperative beings. Unfortunately, they’re not sure whether you qualify, so they decide to give you all a test. Can you solve this hat riddle? Alex Gendler shows how.

So true, and I would be one of them : Even after hearing the explanation I know I wouldn't be able to pull it off, AND IT'S LITERALLY A VIDEO WITH DRAWING.
Wait till they picked up some karens.
only one serious problem of this riddle : everyone must understand your plan
Well the alien says you have 5 minutes to discuss, so you and your friends can discuss and agree on that plan :)
That's why it's a test to see that the whole group is qualified or not.😂
@@eliasheinrich5617 so why won't the tallest person says all hats colours starting with the first guy?

Realistically, the aliens would've also said that they aren't allowed to touch their hats, or otherwise remove them from theirs or each others' heads, to prevent them from just looking at their hats or switching them around.
That doesn’t change anything at all
Realistically this would never happen
That's really clever. Too bad you'd never be able to get 9 average humans to understand the strategy in under 5 minutes.
What comments are you talking about? Most people who figured it out probably paused it to think about it for a while, so it took more than 5 minutes. And if 9 people out of 8 million viewers instantly grasped the solution, that doesn't mean it would be realistic for a random group of 9 people to figure it out (worse odds than winning the lottery). Not to mention, a handful of people out of 8 million would be above average by definition.
nah they don't all have to figure it out for themselves, it just has to be explained to them...like how it has been explained to us, in this five minute video :)
XD
well it took him 4 to do this so i am a pretty average person,... im not smart.... but i got it so i think it would work

This can be extended to any amount of colors. Let's say we have three colors red, green and blue. First we assign a value to each red=0, green=1, blue=2. The person starting to guess a color adds up the color values of each hat he sees and takes it modulo 3. For example for a lineup of (r,g,g,r,b,g) the sum would be 1+1+0+2+1=5%3=2, so he says blue. The next one does a similar calculation 1+0+2+1=4%3=1 and subtracts this from what the last person has said, leading to 2-1=1=green and so on.
Interestingly, the riddle gets simpler if you use an infinite amount of colors. Again assigning values to them, and for simplicity just consider the values instead of colors. The person starting simply adds up all the values and says the corresponding color. Now the next person does the same and subtracts the result from what the last person said. So for a lineup of (12,2,43,29,1), the first one says 2+43+29+1=75, the second 75-(43+29+1)=2 and so on.
If you tried to make me do math like that under that kind of stress I'd just tell the aliens to fucken eat me!
I'm not sure it's working, it's not enough to subtract the sum I see from what the last one said.. example: 0,1,2,1 - the first says 1+2+1=4%3=1. The second sees 2+1=3%3=0 so he says 1-0=1 (good), the next one sees 1 so he says 1-1=0 - wrong!
I believe the correct solution is to set a bit: in the first turn it's what the first person says (i.e., (total sum)%3) and then on each turn, the bit is set to: (what the one before last said) minus (what the last person said)
So in the above example, the first one says 1, the second has bit=1 and sees 0 so he says 1-0=1. the next one has bit=1-1=0, and sees 1 so he says (0-1)%3=2, the next person has bit (0-2)%3=1 and sees 0 so he says 1-0=1
How do we know red is not eight and purple is ten

And that works for *any* color hat.
+Pseudo Lain Yes, very
I came up with another plan. Let me name the prisoners p1 to p10, p1 being the tallest and p10 being the shortest. P1 obviously can’t guess his hat colour. So he just says the colour of p2. Now p2 knows his colour. The strategy is, if p3 has the same color as p2, p2 just immediately says the color of his hat. Since the answer was immediate p3 knows that he’s wearing the same colour. But if p2 sees that p3 is wearing a different colour, he says his hat color after a long pause of 5 minutes. The pause meant that p2 and p3 aren’t wearing the same colour. So simple terms,
P1 tells the color of p2
P2 now knows his colour
If p3 is the same colour, he immediately says his colour
If not, he takes a long pause of 5 minutes before he says his own color
By paying attention to the timing p3 knows if his hat color is the same as p2’s
I saw the solution immediately because I am aware of what computer scientists called a parity bit. It was a way of reducing errors caused by computer hardware. Say you have 8 bits (1s or 0s) to read. The hardware (such as a tape machine) would read the bits and then software would see if the total was even or odd. It would then compare that to a parity bit which had been set based on the correct answer. If the parity bit and the software calculated odd or even were not the same, then it would know there was a reading error.

I think in a real scenario like this, there'd be people that just refuse to cooperate. Rather than talk logically, there'd be a frenzy of crying, arguing, or just people refusing to play along because of stubbornness, and "why does this have to happen to me?" kind of thinking. There's no selflessness, nor calmness, nor logic in the average person's way of thinking. Likely, they'd all die because the actual smart people in the group who would have thought of a solution would actually be too busy trying to calm the people freaking out, and trying to get the stubborn, defensive people to cooperate. And so everyone would die. This is why I'd rather take my chances in a single-person challenge than have to deal with other people in a scenario like this.
+SirSaxamaphone Not saying this isn't a neat puzzle. I enjoyed this. I'm just saying it's more likely to be paired with non-cooperative morons who refuse to understand and choose to panic, than actual logical thinkers.
+SirSaxamaphone well sure, it said that at least 9 people have to get the correct answer. The more people who have to cooperate and get the right answer, the worse the situation is. What if they said that only 1 person has to get it right? Then of course you'd want as many people as possible. So, it depends on what kind of question is being asked or what the challenge is. But you're right that people would sometimes rather be stubborn and destroy all life rather than cooperate. That might be what happens in real life eventually.
+SirSaxamaphone Agreed.
+SirSaxamaphone you just described exactly what i think of the human race
+betatalk357 When he said single person challenge, i don't think he specifically meant this one. Obviously this is a biased challenge in the way that it CAN be logically won with 2 or more people (assuming you still get 1 chance to be wrong about a hat color like in the video). Obviously if they asked just one person to guess the color of their hat it literally would be a guess, with no prior information, or ability to deduce the color via logic.
The main point SirSaxamaphone was trying to make is the fact that this situation wouldn't even happen, because once the 5 minute timer started ticking half of the randomly selected people would be freaking out. Crying about why they're here, why me, etc. Ever watched the SAW movies? It would basically be like that. And if even ONE person cannot follow this logic to make the plan work, you're all eaten (unless they get a lucky guess). Even worse if the tallest is one freaking out since the entirety of every ones guesses hinge on that information.
I’m actually pretty happy I got the answer!

By the thumbnail I thought you had to figure out why which one had which colored hat, after a good five minutes of stareing at it, ITS IN THE NOSE
-Placed in a single file line facing forward in size order
-Able to see everyone in front of you
-May not:
- Step out of line
- Look behind you
-Have either black or white hat assigned randomly
-Must determine said color of high moving from back to front
-No signaling whatsoever
-Must have at least 9 correct.
Using these requirements, you could simply just take your hat off and look at the color. It's not against the rules, and a guaranteed 10 correct.

Well, there's still the chance, the guy at the back will, by pure chance, guess his own color correctly, thus allowing you to have 1 wrong answer.
Hehehehe
carealoo744 Unless you are the last one and the first one gets it right, you will convey the wrong information and thus cause everyone to guess wrong.
No, I meant if you were the only one who wasn't listening. The one at the back, would still give the right information, and may, by a 50% chance, guess his own hat color right, while doing so, thus fulfilling the required: 'At least 9 getting it right.'
"Now, it all comes down to you, at the front of the line"
*are you calling me short?!?*
This is still the only Ted-Ed riddle I completely understand
How to solve the riddle:
*_step 1_* : confirm you have green eyes
*_step 2_* : ask the alien to leave
Ooh, from the other riddle!
C'mon unoriginal
Aarush Kalra c’mon I thought they were still funny! Idek lol
If you didnt see the video yet, heres the link:ruclips.net/video/oHg5SJYRHA0/видео.html
Step 3: get thrown into the volcano
Step 4:????
Step 5: PROFIT!
“You at the front of the line”
Yo forget the puzzle is he calling me short!???!!
He's calling one of the yous in a puzzle universe in this multiverse or a different one short
Are you, though?
Prisoner 10: accidentally counts the hats wrong
For everyone saying the last person could mess up/get it wrong, that still puts them at a 50% chance of being safe. It's not guaranteed that the first person will be wrong as well.
Anyone could mess up
this would work in theory, but of course there would be one or two people who aren't quite as bright as the rest of the group who would get confused and answer incorrectly
squidkid true
Do you know Splatoon?
Lol such a relevant question
This is not necessarily true. Not all people need to reach the answer, just one and this one explains to the others. The thing is how 10 people would organize themselves to get to the answer in 5 minutes. I think 5 minutes is not that long when your life is in risk. These alians are mean. Haha.
João Paulo Souza Soares pi
Five minutes? Okay, here's the plan; there's ten of us, and three of them. We'll each go into three groups, and then when they get back, we attack them, steal their forcefield gun, and force them to let us go!
lmao
U dont force them u forcefield them HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You think that you could safely land that spacecraft? Ha!
The good old human way
what if they got guns and a phone to distract them from a selfie
It took me a little more than five minutes, but I got there...love this stuff.
I'm doing one of these every day. I'm on day 2, did the 3 gods one, which was awful, but I found a 'solution' (barely) which meant 66% chance of survival. I got this one right and the feeling is borderline euphoric, I feel unstoppable
but the tallest wont be able to see all the hats bc the ones ahead of him hat is very pointy and wont see the shortest persons one. so impossible
If only humans were this good at understanding plans
Try to explain plans without screaming, it works wonders
Only with intelligent people.
@@nicaangelierugas2828 I want to know how,,
I wanna see the cows try and complete this test
They'd do better
RUclips Idiot they'd do better at feeding the aliens
Moo
Search up: Aliens eating beef. That's basically it.
Moo
The first one will say the colr of the second one? Then the second one will either count to three before saying the color (which means he/she sees the following hat with a different folor) or shout the colour immediately (indicating the following hat has the same colour) and so on. Everyone will know the plan and wait for how long the person before them needs to tell the color of the hat
"Now it all comes down to you at the front of the line."
Are you saying I'm that short?????
Highly logical and cooperative, huh? Can anyone see this actually working out?
+RequiemInnocence (レクイエムイノセンス)
Was that irony intentional?
+RequiemInnocence (レクイエムイノセンス) Well when people kind of want to stay alive and not get eaten....
+Nieve Andrea darn, you're making my game far too easy
Nieve Andrea Aliens can be advanced and still want to eat dead flesh....? We're mildly advanced and we still eat dead flesh.
Star Blaze
I wonder if she'd prefer living flesh.
Uhhhh. The horses name was Friday!
what?
+Slade Wilson lol i miss that show
lol
im watching that rn lol
Konata?! Is that a fellow Otaku!!!
Who else got thinking of a strategy where you had to tell someone else's hat color, right in front of you or two ranks up the line, or at the very beginning of the line moving up? And the next person would repeat it, and .. well I mean I somewhat convinced myself that was it, and .. ten of us would be alien food now 😅
Tell the aliens they have green eyes, this will give you more more time to escape without them looking.
Omg lol
LOL
How am I supposed to get 9 guys to listen to me, especially being about as big as a dwarf?
Then you would be at the front not the back
@@starsiaeve4649 I think he means 'How would I get everyone to listen to my plan'
Become a garden gnome
You won’t have to have them listen. Just listen yourself.
Before finding the answer: " Omg! this is impossible! "
After finding the answer: "Omg! It was so easy! i am so stupeed!"
You're gonna be eaten
+Uber Megustador Si aici te vad :)) ? Still doesn't sound easy to me. :D
Is not correct just saying the color of the hat of the person in front you and the memorize all?
Juan Felipe Martínez No because you have to say the color of your own hat corectly and that may differ from the one in front of you.
+Juan Felipe Martínez What? !!
Oh my god, awesome, yet so complicated.
This works perfectly but is quite complex to explain without pen and paper to draw on. An easier solution would be for person number 10 to say the colour of that hat in front of them, that person then has two options, if the person in front of them has a matching hat they say it as fast as they can, if the person in front of them has a different coloured hat they count to 30 before saying their own colour. This still provides 100% chance for the front nine people, but is much easier to understand without a drawing. Going for the easier option is also a highly logical choice to make, still fulfilling the condition.
nice one!
The rules never said that they couldn't touch their own hats. They could just take them off and look at them.
Edit: Where did all these likes come from???
XD

Collapsing Distance I think mine is a pretty logical answer
