When we think about alien civilizations we tend to look into the vastness of space, to far away planets. But there is another incredibly vast dimension that we might be giving too little thought to: time.
Could it be that over the last hundreds of millions of years, other civilizations existed on earth? Indigenous technological species that rose and died out? And that they or their artifacts are buried beneath our feet? What does science have to say about this and what are the implications for us?

For me, one of the most sad realizations in life is the absence or loss of information. Not knowing what's out there, what happened in the past, etc. I hope when I die, I get to spend as much time as I want inside a library containing all of the information that's ever existed, and get to watch where civilization goes. Imagine being something that's existed for millions or billions of years, even after humanity is gone. "Humans? I remember humans."

I would be very interested to see a video about possible aquatic civilizations. How would they have formed? Just from human history's achievements, how would it compare: how would aquatic agriculture develop, would an aquatic stone age work, manually labouring against water resistance? Could they advance to a metal age under water? What alternative pathways of industrialization and advanced would there be? I am sure you can make a great video speculating and giving it some thought ...

I feel like just before mass extinctions would be the most logical place to look for signs of advanced ancient civilization, simply by virtue of there being very little that can destroy such a civilization without ALSO having massive ramifications for other species. That means, from my understanding, the 2 biggest points to check would be the Great Dying and the KT extinction: we have evidence that Early Synapsids showed complex social behavior, which is a key piece of civilization: while Cephalopods are incredibly intelligent, I have seen little evidence of social behaviors in them, which means any findings or ideas made by one will die with that cephalopod. And I don’t know whether any other groups of animals have showed the same level of social complexity as Amniotes have. It’s not impossible, but it’s less likely.
As cliche as it is in Speculative Evolution stories, the KT extinction seems like the best point to start looking: an asteroid impact would be effectively impossible to stop without a space program, and we actually see signs of reduced biodiversity among ceratopsids at the very end of the Mesozoic compared to earlier in the Cretaceous. In addition, Birds, while not heavily established like in the Cenozoic, DID exist for a significant portion of the Mesozoic, along with very close relatives, and modern birds like Corvids have shown uncanny intellect and social capabilities
This is all hypotheticals, mind you, but if we need to start looking somewhere, it’s probably our best bet

    • @kishascape

That's assuming there even was a native civilization. If anything advanced were to have been here if would've just been an outpost similar to what we have in Antarctica which would vanish shortly after leaving it due to nature.

    • @OmDahake
      @OmDahake 2 года назад +203

oil deposits are 180-200 million years old that still leaves more than 2-3 billion years that we do not know of
EDIT: Also the way we calculate age is by comparison something we found to its surrounding and then that to ours and the estimating it which can get wrong and the older something is less accurate we can guess it's age so it's possible that we could have miscalculated the time when multicellular life began to develop as we have earlier missed parts of life as evidence of it was not found or it's age miscalculated

For industrial level civilizations, I can imagine we would find evidence of their existence on the moon, given its geologic and atmospheric stability. Being industrial enough to send resilient items there would be relatively easier than being a civilization who could find those tiny artifacts. Maybe someday we will be advanced enough to be able to rule out certain kinds of civilizations in the solar system simply by seeing no evidence of them on smaller stable bodies like the moon.

while it's always nice to imagine other life forms that use their brains in a similar way to ours such as on Star Trek, what often seems to get overlooked is that you don't always need to be able to build cities for your species to continue for a very long time. For example, the crocodiles. If we do find life in other solar systems one day, I would expect most of it to be non-technological. I once heard something like "Evolution doesn't have to produce the best, just what's good enough" and it made sense.

Now the world is deceived now you mentioned a bunch of bible stuff the Bible says the Earth is a prison. The Bible says that you've been exiled to work out your salvation and fear and trembling. Bible actually says we're the aliens yep we were kicked out of heaven God told me personally when I got saved. God also gave me clear instructions to preach the rapture which is when God removes his church he gave me three dreams. God gives me dreams every night. God said in the end days he will pour out his Spirit on his people old men will dream dreams I haven't stopped dreaming since I got saved. Now my dreams are full of instruction and they're to the point. God is not the author of confusion. Now I'm not the only one called to be a witness many people are crying out that were in the end times what do you think coronavirus is for. You think they shut down the whole world over the flu cuz they care. No they were seeing how much control they have over the world because they need to take it over for the mark of the beast. If they really gave a s*** they would have shut down the world for AIDS and cancer and gave us the cure. Either way you seem to know the Bible I'm not here to fight with anybody I'm just like I said here to be a witness. If anybody wants to escape God's judgment that's coming to the Earth all they need to do is repent their sins to Jesus and then have a daily relationship with him by reading the Bible praying and examining their sins daily. God will show them like God showed me the Bible says if anybody lacks wisdom let him ask God 🙏

Well here's the thing we're living in crazy times and I found out the truth and so I'm called to share it. When my sister died I cried to God and God woke me up you made me look for the truth and it wasn't like I started out looking for God. I saw a whole bunch of crazy stuff on the earth I looked into reptilians and aliens and all that stuff. But I also saw that the celebrities in the world leaders sold their soul to the devil and that was the really the truth. Cuz we live in Satan's kingdom this is what I found out they even sing to Lucifer in the Vatican. I saw testimonies of heaven and Hell and I knew those people weren't lying. So I repented my sins at home to Jesus and he answered my prayer. Then when I gave up sin God showed me the rest of my sins cuz I didn't know. Thank God showed me we're living in the end times and to tell people. God also showed me that there's going to be a Rapture where he's going to remove his church. That's why I chose this alien platform because I know that that's going to be the deception of the Earth. That's why they're saying all this stuff about aliens now they're getting people prep to believe in them but aliens are just demons. The stuff is all real we live in Satan's kingdom. So here's the deal Jesus isn't a religion he was God in the flesh and if you go in your room and you tell God that you believe Jesus died for you and you're sorry for whatever you think you did wrong and mean it and you're not going to willfully sin God will 100% answer you and you won't be deceived by the world anymore. At this point it's your job to have a relationship with God you do this by working on giving up your sins that's why you're supposed to examine yourself daily. Then you read the Bible pray which is talking to God and give thanks for your food. Follow these simple instructions and God will 100% tell you what to do and you'll know 100% that you're saved and going to heaven and you can't buy that there's no better gift in the world so make sure you get saved because Jesus isn't a religion he's a relationship and if you don't have one with him you're not going to heaven that's why we're in times everybody rejects God and ends up going to hell don't be like the rest of the world God loves you

Reminds me of a conversation with an old geology professor of mine, he pointed to coal reserves as evidence against previous industrialized civilizations on Earth. Coal is geologically unique because it was formed when plants figured out how to make cellulose and for a long time nothing could break it down. Coal was formed when these massive piles of old cellulose would catch on fire. This meant all coal on earth was formed in this tiny period, and will never be regenerated, unlike oil. The prevalence of coal for our civilization indicates that there hasn't been a civilization that used coal before.

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
You can give your life to God right now. Repent for your sins, trust Jesus, and God will give you eternal life. Have faith and say this prayer.

There's one type of evidence from agriculture/empire civilizations that wasn't mentioned in the video. Or rather, something similar to it misleadingly applied only to industrialisation. That's homogenisation of species and its rapid spread. There are some particular species (and even sub species) of plants and animals that agricultural civilizations found more useful than others. Those few species experienced a massive population increase and were rapidly spread across entire continents, and even between them. So if the fossil record shows that a particular genus exists in only one area, and with many different species of it there, in one moment; and in the next layer there's only one species of it left but it's become worldwide, then that is a huge signal that something very unusual has happened.

I remembered when I played the game Chrono Trigger and it blew my mind when, in its story, after the Prehistoric Age they imagined a "Magical Age" that happened before the "Normal History" and everyone had forgotten about it after so much time. Only legends remained. There was an advanced civilization using magic to escape the planet's harsh conditions due to the disaster that eliminated the dinosaurs. But they eventually caused a great disaster to themselves. The survivors started living among the other people and as time went on, rebuilt cities and civilizations.
I always loved this idea! But I also thought about the points in the video: how long would it take for a civilization to be completely lost to time, depending on the materials it used and its technology?

The fun part is there are conspiracy theories based on perfect pyramid shaped mountains in Antarctica at 78°21'S and 160°30'E from the Falcon Scott expeditions, based on which Lovecraft might have drawn inspiration and the current closed off access to the region.

Were in the End Times, Jesus is real he was God and not a religion. Thats why if anybody truly tells Jesus they believe he died for them and their sorry for the sins they have committed he will answer them the problem is at this point your supposed to keep seeking Jesus by working on giving up sin by examining your behavior daily and reading the bible, praying and giving thanks for your food. God will teach anybody and answer them daily don't be like the rest of the world get saved today you will see God will answer you if your serious:)

You did forget one thing that would stay for an incredibly long time and be almost impossible to miss, space debris. Satellites above low Earth orbits will basically stay there forever and so will any satellites we've put in orbit of other bodies like the sun or other planets, probes and other stuff that we've left behind on extra terrestrial bodies can also stay around for very long. Everything that's been left on the moon for example will basically have to be hit by asteroids to be removed and with how much we've left and how low the rate of asteroid impacts is in our current solar system they'll basically stay there forever, immune to biological or atmospheric sources of decay. These things would be obvious tell tale signs of a previous industrial civilization and even if many of the satellites are destroyed due to Kepler syndrome it still wouldn't be difficult to recognize that these are artificial in nature. Any alien civilization that finds Earth before it is destroyed by the Sun will be able to spot and recognize these things and from that can easily extrapolate that there was once an industrial civilization on Earth, following the same logic given that it only took about 150 years from the invention of the steam engine to the launch of the first artificial satellite we can assume that any industrial civilization in Earth's past would probably have developed space technology and as such leave tell tale evidence in the form of satellites.
There's of course other things we can look at to say that there probably hasn't been any industrial civilization in Earth's past, for example our extraction of hydrocarbons in the form of coal and oil is very noticeable and we have almost used up the entire supply of oil and have significantly reduced the supply of coal. Given how easy these are to use to power machinery we can kinda reason that just because we find them in amounts that are only consistent with us being the first to use them that probably means that there hasn't been any industrial civilization before us. Our coal deposits for example age back to the Carboniferous and many of our oil deposits started developing in later periods. We know that oil would take at least a few hundred million years to naturally regenerate to our current levels and the kind of coal formation that happened during the Carboniferous can't really happen anymore so we can reason with a lot of confidence that there haven't been any industrial civilizations prior to ours.
