"I can sleep outside" BROKE MY HEART haha
It was awesome seeing Michael Cera in a role so different to what he's typically known for, and doing it so well. Watched it twiiceeee
I just watched it the other week actually!
I wasn't expecting such a dark ending. Thank you to whomever funded this, it's great to see shorts like this with talented actors.
"I'll take a can of gas."
"What's it for?"
"GAS!"
The date scene made me feel physical pain.
Yeah, you might wanna get that checked.
All of the scenes make me feel physical pain
I've never been so conflicted about how I feel about a character.
what about now?
And now?
now?
?
Nah fuck Gregory
I like weird, off beat shit like this. Absolutely my favourite style of cinematography, natural light with lots of centre frame shots. This was cool man
Try Stringer with Jake Jilehnhal
Gregory go Boom, for one, the caliber of skill and budget of this film is off the charts. The cinematography (A ton of natural lighting from props and set design), soundtrack, and having a well-known actor, Michael Cera (Always getting type cast) attracts enough attention from his fans to put this film on the map. The wide shots are fabulous. So far, all these films have unsatisfying or sad endings from the protagonist’s perspective. I felt the protagonist really did desire to break free and love someone, despite his shortcomings from being handicapped. He even had supposed “moral flaws“ with his character and there could be a legitimate discussion that he would’ve grown from that too for a character arc. Overall, the writing and execution in this film is very effective (The comedy hits hard) and the music fits its target audience. I just know that the ending just doesn’t work for everyone and people may feel cheated out of rooting for a character they just learned about to eventually hit rock bottom. It’s like an investment with no payoff and that’s how some people felt toward ‘Buried’ too. The arc of the protagonist feels incomplete.
The ending is so crazy disturbing even compared to the rest of the film, it just makes me wonder what perspective on the character the writers had. Is this hilarious to them or do they relate to this guy?
Maybe both. I believe that Micheal Cera's character thought he was so close to having his desire of being with a woman that it destroyed him once the woman kicked him out. He was in a crisis moment and with how the film was cut we are lead to the result of his mixed emotions that caused him to his doom.
I think he had the intentions of setting himself on fire when he bought the can of gas earlier in the video. Though he bought it at what seemed to be random.
True.
Where the fuck do i get this creepy ass music
Gregory Go Boom
it wasn't until I told my friends about this video that I realized how funny it is. A lot of comedy has "over the top acting". This has "regular acting". So it's different, and takes a second to really appreciate. A huge inspiration to me.
This was damn great. I've watched it twice now. Really love anything with Michael Cera.
I watched it twice too. Just sayin'
Hey I saw some of the stuff you were doing with JASH. It wasn't bad, but I must say, Scott Pilgrim and Arrested Development... you did quite a fantastic job. Thanks for adding me to your circles, dude.
Great short film. I loved the writing and the acting. These things get me excited for the rise of RUclips channels.
This was..by far one of the best shorts I've seen in a long time. The directing of this must have been hell of a challenge...it was a good mix of awkward, hilarity and ABSOLUTE eeriness. It all felt like the rumblings of a horror film/serial killer in the making and all that tension finally came together at the end...seriously. Also was a breath of fresh air to see Michael Cera step outside his usual word. Yeah he was still awkward as fuhhh but it felt like a totally different character.
This was a short. It was how Cera was discovered. It was a documentary
oh hi PD :)
Pop Pep los p no ⁹❤️
Right!? I really enjoyed this character (loved it in fact). I wish they'd make a full movie, I'd pay to watch it. The ending was sad but, got the sense he wasn't happy. I could relate to a lot of what he was feeling and why he did what he did.
@@salvagemonster3612not true
This made me cry so hard.
What a fucked up world we live in.
+Buffoonery Accord I think the beauty is in the fact that he is kind of a terrible person, we convey a sort of sorrow for the character although he is really lacks empathy with anyone he is in communication with, he admires his brother but doesn't empathize with him. Just imagine the character wasn't in a wheel chair he would be down right sociopathic.
*****
Very good point, but that's what makes it sad. I think part of the reason he is so sterile is that he pities himself. He doesn't seem to have very much social interaction.
--
This is part of the reason of why the things he does are cringey. He's not fitting in, he's not adapting to his surroundings and that's what makes him depressed, and he lacks empathy as a result.
--
It's a vicious cycle:
Embarrassment leads to shutting people out. That leads to more embarrassment, which repeats the loop.
+Brandon Jemison that's a shallow psychological interpretation of what's going on. cause and effect bro, read some dostoyevski
theEarlofChip lol I mean enlighten me if you could I don't think you can dig too deep into the pysche of a fictional character in a short film but also I don't claim to be well read on Dostoyevsky. If you have a position to contribute I am all ears. I was saying essentially that his disposition alone seems to give us automatic fabricated empathy, and I believe that to an overarching theme whether inadvertent or not (I am looking at the big picture stuff).
***** his disposition is caused by his condition, his environment, and how others treat him. there's a lot of complex socioeconomic and psychological things going on that determine the chain of events.
maybe there are better examples I'm not thinking of, but dostoyevski is the first that came to mind as he's known for pioneering this sort of character who does bad things, but the reader is allowed to empathize and identify with him and understand his pathology. Notes from the Underground is a short novella that addresses this really well.
this film seriously struck a chord with me, not only was it brilliant made and designed in every aspect but the story fills you with questions and leaves you wanting more, some closure, feeling empty inside, congratulations michael.
A story of a mans struggle against his deformity and his strive to be normal, this short film was just a gorgeous example of one who tries so hard to fit in, but in the end, just can't take it anymore. From being a burden on his sister, to being unable to do all the small tasks we take for granted, we see a man's struggle, a man on his last leg. It all could have been prevented by one person. One of many who were here, but none did. None even attempted. This story is one that millions of people world wide suffer from. Be it from being Gay, or mentally disabled, or coming back from a war without the use of arms or legs, this story is repeated so many times, be it from bullying or from being seen as lower by the society of norms around them, this is a story that rings true. Thank you Michael, for just a peak into that life. There is plenty of lessons here, but most have to be figured out.
I like that this shows Michael Cera's true potential in acting. They didn't just shove an "awkward teenage" role at him. It shows how versatile his acting career could actually be.
And I think that's great. Michael should be given more credit.
It's Mike actually
wow wtf lol... i hated watching it but i could NOT get myself to turn it off.. very disturbing but awesome experience!
I am an awkward person naturally, but this made me feel overwhelmingly awkward. Impressed.
If this wasn't a RUclips video and instead was an actual full length movie it would win awards, no doubt
This really displays what a great great actor Michael Cera is
I'll Take a can of gas. Whats it for? GAS!!!!
This is actually beautiful and sad.... She let's him spend the night with her, and when he tells her the truth about never being with a girl she kisses him.. Kinda sweet
this is truly tragic and I got shivers. I love Michael cera's work
The scene with his older brother seriously cut me deep. I have a brother with autism and honestly I can just see this situation between us. I'm not nearly as bad off as this older brother but I'll be damned if this didn't hit close to home.
You should let him stay with you then. Don't push him away
jayR101084 he's a youngun still in school and my step dad is a great guy so he's in good hands rn. Still ain't seen him in months though.
Wow... I love most of Michael Cera's stuff... But this... This is by far the BEST short I may have ever soon to date, and great acting work by Michael. This is absolutely heartbreaking. Very well written.
It's so crazy how amazing a story can be, yet so tear-jerking at the same time in this way.
Great Work!!!
I wonder if Gregory had that moment of regret after setting himself ablaze
a couple years back... when this first showed up, I was with a couple people. We smoked and watched it thinking it'd be a comedy. There was a little nervous laughter at the 'quirky' first 4 or 5 minutes. then silence. then the end came and we all just freaked out. clearly there are two sides to most actors...
This has been the most awkward 17 minutes of my life.
Dude this is fucking weird.
the deal with the bag?!? and then she licks his finger??
Right?
Michael, I love you bro, but seriously.
Michael Cera and Sarah Silverman pale to Tim & Eric in terms of funny weirdness
"I'll take a can of gas." "What for?" "Gas!"
Nobody does real like Michael Cera but as an audience do we want real?
YES.
But real is outside our window.
James Forrester But I need to know if MY real is other people's REAL.
My pain was reaffirmed as real and not unique through this film.
I could relate and dat feels good.
x anon That's what documentaries and the news is for. I know what you're saying that you want things to be realistic and so do I. But I also want some escapism too. There was nothing redeeming about this to escape the absolute horror. It was amazing acting and writing though. Michael Cera is one of my favourites.
James Forrester It was funny as hell, despite being tragic. That's what you do sometimes in life...laugh at the absurdity of it all despite you being miserable from it, and it feels gud.
Just watched this for a second time, a year or so after my first viewing. I completely forgot what he does at the very end. That was actually really sad.
Holy shit that was pretty damn good.
God bless the women who help a brother out sometimes.
- please. please? whatever it is--whatever I did, I am soo sorry.
This made me uncomfortable to watch and reminded me a lot about real life, cuz real life is uncomfortable. :/
+Cocokitty98 yes...'real life' because all physically disabled people in wheelchairs are decrepit and socially awkward. For 'real'.
***** Sorry, nowhere in my comment I talked about his disability being awkward. That's something that you got offended about all on your own.
+Cocokitty98 She didn't say you said that. She was saying that the movie portrayed Gregory (the one who was physically disabled and in a wheelchair) as decrepit and socially awkward, which I too believe it did. Nothing at all like "real life". Doesn't mean the story isn't possible or that things like it could not have happened, all it means is that it is in no way an average portrayal of somebody with the shown "condition".
Ryan Anderson
It seems to be that her sarcastic reply to my specific comment wasn't a statement but is more of a rude assumption on what my comment meant to her. I do not see the necessity to point out the _reality_ of this specific film on my comment since I wasn't referring to anyone's disability.
So yes even though she didn't say I said that, then what did she really _intend_ by saying that at all in a sarcastic manner? I do not agree with what you suggest because your explanation is way more friendly than her approach.
No clue, that was why I put quotes around it.
Welp, time to go make a Tuna Casserole.
I was looking at the previous comments and it was kinda disappointing how many people didn't really see anything behind the film, they didn't really dig deeper than into what messages/thoughts/feelings this film could provoke, or at least did for me. I personally love films like this. I thought the way it was filmed was beautifully done. I don't know much about filmmaking or directing, but I do know the type of cinematography, lighting, themes, etc. I prefer in films, and I really digged it aesthetically, but I liked the dark tone. I liked the character, especially because it shows a darker side to Cera than the usual role he plays, the character was upset on such a deep level emotionally, and at times, I could feel exactly what the creators were trying to make the audience feel, especially in the scene where he is in the bed with the girl. The intense music that was played throughout the movie was unsettling, and perfect for the mood. I didn't expect the end, but I thought it was perfect. I don't think you are supposed to fully understand why he decided to light himself on fire, but I think it's pretty obvious that the guy was just really sad, he wasn't happy his life, he didn't want anyone to have to take care of him, and he felt rejected in every way, from his brother and from women. It was upsetting to me when the girl didn't fuck him, because I for a moment, I felt like she was an awesome person for just making this poor guy happy like that because she knew he never had that chance before. I don't think he would have lit himself up had she not kicked him out, even though he already bought the gas. I think that was just the final rejection, the breaking point. Well done!
"Whatever his...whatever I did I am so sorry. Please, please?? Whatever his...whatever I did I am so sorry. Please, please?? Whatever his...whatever I did I am so sorry. Please, please??" Had to play it twice so I knew I wasn't trippin haha
can’t stop laughing...... the whole thing
Really liked it. How very dismal. I loved that he was a racist, not for any reason of hate but because of the dimension it opened up for the character. In movies you have whites and blacks and few feeble attempts at gray. The "negative" aspects of the character added to his humanity.
dude are... are you serious
"You Wanna Come With Me?"
"Im In A Wheel Chair" lol
I haven't had a serious WTF moment like this since the first season of The Game of Thrones. Michael... What the fuck!? lmao
What exactly are you mentioning?
Most awkward film ever, gave me an eerie feeling and I wanted to turn it off the whole time but I couldn't. Felt like a nightmare...
I interpreted the first film as a dark comedy. I think it symbolized a person crippled by insecurity and seeking a crutch, or some kind of acceptance metaphorically. He wanted to escape his sister Rose because she was his caretaker, making him feel dependent and stifled. He follows all these rebellious people who pave their own path to be more like them. He started growing more and more frustrated and isolated because he realized that everyone is as broken as he is, even though they might appear in control of their lives on the surface. In the end he can't achieve a feeling of independence, so he gives up and kills himself. That's how I see it.
well done michael cera, my hat off to you sir.
Brilliant. I hope you continue to step outside of the box with films like this.
Great film.
Wow. Hmm. Very dark ending.
Good film? Need something to watch tonight.
eikoslamiad Don't consider it good really outside of an artsy, independent film sort of way. And it's pretty depressing. But you can gauge it for yourself.
The title foreshadowed the ending.pretty hilarious really
‘I just got to empty my bag out’ 😂
to quote the great D. McB
"iGuess if Michael Cera's gone...its not a total loss, huh?"
this is the end
michael cera always knows how to make me laugh! hilarious!
As always, I am impressed with Michael Cera's acting. Janicza Bravo masterfully directed his script and inspired the best from his cast. That being said, I found the resolution lacking and the message (if indeed their was one) overbearingly nihilistic. I am among the millions of Americans that are labeled as "disabled". I know some that never mention it, some that let it define them, others that are happier than any other person, and still others that are as depressed and filled soul-sucking self-loathing as our "Gregory" here. The overwhelming difference tends to be that none of them find a can of gasoline at the "end of their rope". They find a friend, family member, doctor, church, neighbor, or even just one more book to read or movie they want to see before they end it all. (As for me, i'm holding out for Avengers vs. Justice League to hit the big screen!) I'm all for shocking endings, as long as they lead me to think about something. I didn't with GGB. I've watched it 4 times now. Same opinion. Great cast, acting, directing, lighting, sets, make-up, etc... but if their were a multiple choice for any other ending (maybe a jet falls out of the sky and randomly squashes Gregory as he rides across the desert), I'd choose that one. On a positive note, everyone see Magic, Magic. Cera is genius and it's creepy as hell!
This is like a really dark Napoleon Dynamite.
Some how I liked this short film it´s so raw.
I really liked this!
But what I don't get is why in the first two mins or whatever Gregory and the sister were interviewed about the brother like this was some kind of documentary, but then the rest of it was like a short film.
yeah
this is so cringey but i have to finish it i can't turn it off for some reason
Too real
I KNOW I had to push through after he called that lady too dark
I love the face cera makes when the waitress tells the girl we dont have grape soda, he's like oh shit dont fuck this up for me how don't you have grape soda, lmfao
I cringed the whole time but I could not stop watching... it was like watching a train-wreck I could not look away. Regardless, I love Michael's work. Loved it.
Funny in a really fucked up, dark, twisted, terribly sad way. Loved it.
Napoleon Dynamite on heroine
THIS MOVIE DESERVES AN GRAMMY 0_0
It smells like pee and soap.
The version here on RUclips uses an alternate take of the bedroom scene without toplessness. Amazon Prime has it uncensored.
This is one of those films where you go 'WTF?', 'lol', and 'that's depressing'.
"I'LL TAKE A CAN OF GAS" / "what's it for?" / "GAS!" ahahaha
I enjoyed this. Extremely awkward but good.
what's the music in this? you know the
buh-buh-buh- dnananan buh-buh-buh
Michael Cera.
touche
Wow, that was fucking great! Had a huge Harmony Korine vibe! Sick af!
Hahaha! "You smell like my sister..." Best awkward moment ever!
Napoleon Dynamite Directed by Rob Zombie
If this was supposed to be funny, like that is it's main goal, then I missed it. With that being said, I did enjoy the short. Pretty sad ending though.
no, it was not supposed to be funny
Gotcha, this is why I stopped reading the comments on RUclips section for a while, they confused the hell out of me.
I like going into it with a clear mind. Zagy015
Exactly how I felt.
This is an interesting character. Gregory is a character who desires independence by looking for affection in all the wrong people. He makes bad decisions and is a racist, so he has very few redeeming qualities which is what makes this a powerful character study. He pushes away the one person who cares about him, because she babies him.
12:10 You wanna sit on it, LOL!!
this was heartbreaking and brilliantly if not painful to watch (for the heart - m cera and team great job) but if y'all watching this can take one thing away. Just because you're in a wheelchair/physically disabled DOES NOT mean that your life has no meaning, you lack hope and live in isolation. This is such a terrible, tragic stereotype that to this day and age still lingers. Trust me...I know. People seem to flip their eyeballs out when they encounter a disabled person who is independent, outgoing, ambitious, funny, happy and genuine. "So sad, how terrible, what a tragedy, you're too pretty, so young...so sad." are often the first lines of communication spoken when first confronting/meeting a disabled person (and trust me on this...I KNOW. I live it). why is that? Really irks me that Cera chose Gregory to be in a wheelchair, I get it, for a short film it helps build up the character and tension but...so sick of the stereotype.
+Ulrika Have you lived in the middle of nowhere in the midwest, or in a westen-ish town like in this short?
nope....never been in the middle but i can imagine what its like
Even perfectly healthy teens have trouble with getting out there and being sociable, much more than being in the city. Mainly cause you need a car to go most places to do things. For me something like this is not far fetched at all. Granted there are only a few people I have seen this bad, and they did not burn themselves alive. What I'm getting at is that it's a stereotype for a reason, cause in places like this it happens a lot.
oh yeah.... the solitude/isolation lack of outlets for social, interests, activities....i'd be depressed as hell too. big city living can get crazy but at least you feel alive
Did i just watch Napoleon Dynamite 2 preview?
Why is this not a movie
I don't think my jaw has ever actually dropped like it did at the end of that. wow
This was fucking brilliant!
OMFG what the hell did I just watch
This wasn't a comedy. Anybody who thinks this was a comedy is wrong- including the creators, if they think so. This was an intensely sad, painful tragedy. Any comedy was incidental and minor.
"Whoops I accidentally added humor. My bad!!"
Luis Ortega yes
Do you understand what satire means?
Agreed, I watched this and later googled it to find it labeled a comedy, which it clearly isn't. It was great, but it's honestly closer to a horror than it is to a comedy.
Listen, guys. I know my phrasing was inflammatory. I know that what a person gets out of a work is purely up to them, and while I said, basically, "Your opinion is wrong", I don't really believe that. This is just an opinion I feel very strongly about, which is that, for me, the minor comedic aspects in this literally just made the rest of the film even more tragic. That's all.
MICHAEL CERA'S ACTING IS SO. GOOD.
Whoa, Michael Cera, you are dark.
I really like this usage by 'professionals' of youtube; making it a platform for flowing artistry - both inwards and outwards to the old media realms. This short film is of a quality not regularly achieved by youtubers (only very rarely). Quality as in camera-work, editing, general acting, setting. But, the fascinating thing is that youtubers are catching up. While the energetic interaction and guerilla engagement of youtubers is not yet matched by the industry's professionals. But ideally it's not a race. It's a nice mutual exchange of injections of quality and platforms.
Specifically, I think Michael did a decent job here, but I fear these roles suit him too good, he needs to get be careful of a type of stigma, the Napoleon Dynamite skin, he might have a much wider range, but I wonder whether he gets the roles to show it. Enter: the handy usefulness to develop oneself at a by now more appreciated platform like RUclips. I hope to see more of his different sides.
I don't think Gregory Go Boom was bad, but it doesn't distinguish itself from other Indie flicks, the usage of empty pace, the vast dulness of surroundings. I do appreciate such genres of non-developmental plots, if indeed executed in a proper manner. Also, I'm ambivalent about the ending. It's a nice dramatization, but it comes too cathartic, too sudden, out of the blue. The main character seemed unhappy but gritty, harsh. Why would he do so? Or shouldn't he have been more on edge, even? Not just unkind, but really enraged; empowered from being a suffering disempowered one - wouldn't that make the vulnerability of the sex scene stronger and the disappointment deeper? Also, is that burning act a reversed or inside-out form of pity towards disabled? That they live such a miserable life they could just kill themselves? I don't know. I guess the character did live in a meaningless context; the town, the family. You can easily use the same arguments to state the greatness about this work. All in all, I couldn't exactly go for this short film, even though there was quality.
We viewers have nothing to bitch on. These creators make this stuff for us and share it with us, they do the effort. So let's at least appreciate that. Conceptually we can feel like were not touched by the work. But there's no point in being a spoiled little brat, demanding stuff and pissing all over.
music reminds me of akira
the manga film
We know what it is
i swear to you this is the first film Cera has been in I have liked... and not only because he set himself on fire.
Confusing. Hilarious. Highly Improbable. Realistic. Genius. Crazy. All that in various measures.
"You smell like goat" lol
anyone know the song at 6:25
That wasn't meant to be funny
Yiyo Tellez shut up pal
My life without the wheelchair
I love the music
wheres the unwatch button?
I don't get it.. I don't see how anyone could watch more than 2 minutes of this...
I don't see why anyone could turn something off after 2 minutes of watching, kinda takes more than that to make a decision on how good something is.
sorry.. I loved it.. best movie ever
Couldn't watch it because I went completely deaf about half a second after it started
hahahaha omg that was the best part by far
...am I supposed to like it ironically?
i laughed out loud when i saw him on fire at the end. was that supposed to happen?
hwut the actual fuck
It’s a shame this film never really found an audience. The 4 AM infomercial spot on adult swim would have been perfect.
It was funny until the end when I realized wtf he was going through his head, This really happens around the world.
Good riddance
idont understand this but watching it any way cos I'm a big fan of michael cera. EDIT : ok this is really fucked up and dark
i'm so confused
holy. fucking. shit.
