    I had the a7iv and x h2s. The Sony is an awesome camera and the af is as good as it gets. But I returned it and went with the x h2s. The Fuji's are just a joy to use and the images oh my!!!! I love that you can load raws to Capture One and have all the film simulations at your disposal. The af on x h2s is good enough for most folks. One thing that helps with more af hits is to choose focus priority over release priority of the shutter release in the menu(factory standard is set to release). While Fuji is a notch below Canon and Sony for eye tracking af on faster moving subjects it's almost as good overall in every aspect.

    Thank you for this video Jarred and especially the RAW files. I’m considering one of these two cameras and it’s been absolutely valuable to be able to edit the raws I’m Lightroom. I was surprised how similar the images could be once edited. Very slight increase in noise on the Fuji vs the Sony if pushed extremely hard but that to one side the images are very comparable after a white balance and exposure adjustment.

    Great video, Jerred! I'm seeing this Fuji vs Sony focusing issue perhaps a little differently. I agree 100% that Sony has better AF-C than Fuji. But I also think there are at least three camps: 1) Those who want AF to just work and don't want to fiddle with settings. 2) Those who love Fuji cameras and are willing to put up with less than stellar AF. 3) Those who love Fuji cameras, want really good AF and are willing to tweak settings to get there. Personally, I'm in camp #3. If I have to work a little harder than I would with Sony to achieve good AF, I'm willing to do it as Fuji has so many other things going for it.

    • @SlicedBread1001

      I would be very interested to know how you are tweaking your AF settings. My aging x-t2 seems to miss as much as it hits, so I’m looking to move to either x-h2 or a7iv. I’d rather stick with Fuji if I can as Fuji’s best lenses are cheaper that Sony’s GM range.

    Thanks for showing us the side by side comparison. The new Fuji sensor is definitely an improvement. While maybe not reaching full frame detail and definition, the way Fuji was able to maintain dynamic range and iso performance is pretty incredible. I have noticed the Fuji 40mp Raw files need a lot of sharpening. They look equally as soft in lightroom and capture one. One good thing I see, is the files have far less artifacts in lightroom than the old Fuji sensors. The jpegs on the other hand have a ton of sharpness and clarity to them. With portraits I am reducing sharpness to -1 or -2. And that Fuji color magic just cant be beat.

    As a hobbiest, I shoot only Fujifilm and have a number of camera bodies: X-T20, X-E4, X-T100 (converted to IR), X-T3 (two of them), X100V, and X-H2s. I think for most online viewing, 26MP is more than enough resolution. Getting a 40MP sensor might be useful if the output destination changes in the future, but from what you, and other reviewers, have shown, the autofocus is not good enough for what the cameras (X-H2 and X-T5) cost. The response to your RUclips video by those on dpreview has been amusing. Some people concur with your opinion, while others act as defenders of Fujifilm and list detailed steps needed to get decent autofocus results. I think playing a game of Twister would be easier. I would not be surprised if some of the Fujifilm autofocus defenders wear t-shirts with #StayFujiWoke written on the front. 🙂

    While I am Fuji FB (still waiting for my ‘5’), I am no apologist for their failings. I have some $10k invested into Fuji gear, since moving from Canon to Fuji some 5+ years ago, however it seems that Fuji has lost their focus (no pun intended) over the past 2 or so years. I have noticed that the ‘Kaizen’ marketing campaign that was a major selling point when I first got into the ecosystem has or is being scaled back. Listening to their base users has seem to have gone by the wayside over the past year. More emphasis has been put into the GFX lineup, as well as more PASM featured cameras creeping in. The lack of a BG for the ‘5’ still sticks in my crawl, with the mindset being…”you want a BG, get an X-H2….” (mostly from other FBs) Well, I do not want that camera. This not uncommon behavior from companies and/or individuals who receive so much praise and adulation, that they become complacent and lazy, believing in their own superiority. All said, I still love Fuji, I love grabbing my X-Pro 3, X-E4 or one of X-Ts and heading out whether for myself or a client. I just hope Fuji wakes up and honestly acknowledges their biggest flaw, AF before it is too late…

      I thought the reason for "Kaizen" in the early days was because cameras was released with incomplete feature set. They added more later. Today their releases are more mature/complete needing fewer firmware updates.

    Just out of curiosity, do you have an issue where the new Nostalgic Negative film sim is actually on your XT5 yet when you import the raw files into LR, it doesn't show up in your camera profiles to apply? Is that also the case for the XH2? My understanding was that Adobe updated LR for the XH2 and XT5 yet I'm seeing reports that the new preset everyone is so interested in, doesn't show up in LR.

    I have a Sony a7IV and a Fuji x100v. I'm loving how you got the Sony files to look so good - looks like low ISO, controlling your white balance, and then warming up in post. Because when I do a head to head of those two cameras, the Sony blows the x100v out of the water. BUT, I'm looking for the combination of the Fuji and the Sony because I love the Fuji colors so much. Right out of camera they are just perfect to my eye. So I'm thinking about the XT-5. I'm wondering if you have any updated thoughts one year out...

    Great video, too bad I missed the live, I sold my Sony equipment for Fuji XT5 for several reasons.
    1. weight and bulk (70-300 fuji vs 100-400 FF, the difference is enormous) for travel and hiking
    2. colors on jpeg files
    3. the really awesome use of a REAL photographer's camera (in my opinion).
    4. the price, I'm not a pro, just a fan of photography.
    5. the way people look at you on the streets, the fuji looks so dire compare to a sony. with my sony on several occasions I had remarks to know if I took this person in photo.
    6. APS-C vs FF on a print? I didn't see any difference, I think it's brand brainwashing to show an "evolution" of sensors, just marketing.

    Hey Jerred, do you still have the X-H2s? Did you find that it worked any better than the X-T5 in the scenario in your last video with tracking eye AF?
    The Sony GM lenses are probably some of the sharpest lenses ever made. They really are awesome. I’m hoping that Fuji release some higher end prime lenses to compete with these GM lenses. We know they can do it as their GF lenses are stupidly sharp.

    • @JerredZ
      @JerredZ  Год назад +2

      Oh man... those GF lenses are nuts, right? I keep telling my wife to come over and "check this out" for shots that have wild amounts of details, and she just rolls her eyes at me and tells me that "good photos are more than something being sharp." She's so awesome. And as far as the X-H2s, I'll get out and do more tests. In my general use and on some paid portraits the X-H2s delivered generally better results (With a few really weird situations that I need to test where the autofocus lost it's mind... but those were isolated and I couldn't repeat them in the field). SO - I'll be looking more closely at the X-H2s soon.

      I believe that the real difference here in sharpness is the quality of the lens.Where as FUJIFILM lens are generally good, the Sony GF lens are great. Nonetheless, the Fuji is a great camera, and I am glad to have scored the XH2 from B&H last Sunday. Now I need some good lenses. I got the 16 80mm F4 as a kit lens with the camera. I have an 18 55mm F2.8. And a Viltrox 13mm 1.4. I am up for the 70 300mm lens next. That said, the 16 80mm as a kit lens on the XH2 with my shutter set to focus priority vs. shutter release seems much faster than my XT4. I agree with John Branch photography when he says that this setting is better to get 3 perfect shots vs. 20 quick shots with 1 to successful hits.
      Why is no one talking about the Viltrox 75mm 1.2 pro lens.
      Great objective video......points well made about out of the box auto focus. I am an amateur photographer falling in love with photography with my XH2 and Mavic 3 camera gear. I mainly shoot NYC metro area, the Hamptons, the Hudson Valley, and Bear Mountains landscape pictures.

    Cameras are like race, cars, some race cars you don’t have to do anything to them but the ones that they design to be fast is certain things that you have to do to bring out the performance of the car or race cars are not the same just as well as all cameras are not the same but you can get great results out of them all.. full frame and crop sensors like Fuji. There is not a lot of difference when you know what you are doing. Print them out side-by-side and ask people to pick up for one that is from Sony pick out the one that is from Fuji with just a little tweaking, we would not be able to tell the difference…😂😂

    i have been shootng the XT5 besides the a7m4 for a few weeks now and the Fuji has absolutely more detail (!) in the image. BUT: With Fuji it is HIGHLY dependent on the lens, while Sony lenses are almost all absolutely Excellent the Fujis can vary greatly. The issue with Sony is, that they apply a strong Sharpen to each RAW (!) File that cant be disabled. So eyelashes appear sharper on the Sony. Now if you sharpen the Fuji it actually has more detail than the sony, but you need to bring it out. And thats not even using c1, just basic LR its better then the Sony... People always confuse sharpness with detail resolution and youtube keeps telling this nonsense...

  • @isaacxvasquez
    @isaacxvasquez 9 месяцев назад

    Please correct me if im wrong. The SONY looks sharper, but sharper doesnt make the photo more satisfying. There is something with the sonys sharpness that is "too much". I always compare the sharpness on cameras & lenses to Hasselblad with a carl zeiss lens (very sharp BUT smooth at the same time) because its my favourite type of sharpness. The Sony has this "Cutting" sharpness that just looks horrible to me, like its to perfect.

      The Fuji autofocus is not far behind Canon, looking at some of online reviews, the Fuji autofocus is almost 80-90% there compare to Canon or Sony. The problem with Canon R7 and R10 is the lenses lineup, native lenses are limited and expensive and now Canon have stop third party lenses maker to make lenses for RF mount.
      There is no perfect camera system, each camera have their own issues and limitation. I think for APS-C..I would say Fuji is the best platform all around with some limitation.

    Thanks for the video. I am deciding between the Sony α 7 iv, the Fujifilm X-H2(s) or the Nikon Z 6 ii. Or even the Nikon Z f or the Fujifilm X-T5. Every time I see a new video I change my mind in the camera I want.
    I see many professionals that use the Sony because they can't afford to lose shots due to AF, so I decided on the Sony.
    But then many people prefer the Fuji colours. So then I want the Fuji.
    After this video I kind of think I don't need the Sony over the Fuji, of better said, I don't need Full Frame over APS-C. But as the Fuji X-H2 is even bigger (slightly) that the Sony or the Nikon I still have to decide. (even though FF lenses are normally bigger than APC-S). Another thing pulling me to Fuji is the slightly lower cost of the lens ecosystem.
