  • I’m continuing to work at putting together a three month prepper pantry as I prepare for the second wave so this grocery haul is meant to fill in a few gaps. There may be tough times ahead so I’m engaging in emergency preparedness by putting up an emergency food supply. I’ve tried to choose carefully as I'm concerned about long term food storage, shelf stable items, food variety, and of course, nutritious value. This is prepping for beginners so join me as I share my prepping journey.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this in the comments. AUGASON farms has #10 cans of very, very long term shelf stable foods. One of the most popular is the tomato powder. Not sure how much it is now but it goes on sale for $20. Usually around $41 full price. They have a number of of good products.

Here are some foods I have stocked in my pandemic pantry:
    1) Heart Healthy Bisquick + cans of sausage gravy so we can have biscuits and gravy sometimes as a treat for breakfast
    2) Little cartons of dehydrated hash brown potatoes + a large canister of dried onion flakes, both from Costco, so we can have onion-flavored hash brown potatoes some mornings with an omelet. I put some onion flakes into a carton of dried potatoes, add water and let steep overnight in the refrigerator. Cook the next morning in a cast iron skillet with some bacon droppings. Dust lightly with bacon salt (optional). I rarely have leftovers of this side dish.
    3) Lots of cans of Spam, regular or flavored. Slice it and pan-fry until browned on both sides as a breakfast meat or dice it and brown it and use as the meat in spaghetti sauce or in homemade fried rice. Spam usually costs less per oz. than canned ham but is basically the same food.
    4) Pull-tab cans of smoked clams + bags of flavored yellow rice/rice pilaf. Add the smoky oil from the can of clams to the pot of cooking rice. During the last 5 minutes add a cup of frozen peas and carrots and let finish cooking. Then mix in the clams and serve.
    5) Boxes of macaroni and cheese dinner (any brand). Cook the pasta as directed until al dente and 5 minutes before the pasta is done, stir in one cup of frozen peas and carrots. When the pasta is done, continue with the recipe to make the cheese sauce. The peas and carrots makes this dish a complete meal. Add some diced, browned Spam if you want to boost the protein content.
    6) Dried pasta made with white flour (not whole wheat) and colored with vegetable puree (spinach, zucchini, beets or carrots). Tastes like regular pasta but has vegetable fiber. Serve with bottled tomato pasta sauce or alfredo sauce, heated, plus canned mushrooms. If you prefer whole wheat pasta, plan to store it in the freezer because this kind of pasta can go rancid in just 6 months if stored in the pantry.
    7) Canned salmon or canned mackerel. Mackerel costs less but is stinky. Use the canned salmon (drained and flaked) mixed with mayonnaise and a little dried dill to make a sandwich filling or use in a recipe for pan-fried salmon patties. If you add the mackerel, flaked (drained and skin/bones removed), to simmering tomato pasta sauce, your sauce will have protein and the acid in the tomatoes will make the stinky fish odor magically disappear (and this tastes surprisingly good over cooked pasta).
    8) Canned foods tend to have a mushy texture. To give some crunch to soups, stews and casseroles made with canned foods, rice and pasta add either canned whole kernel corn (drained) or sliced water chestnuts (drained and diced).
    9) Two magic ingredients that will give any vegetable, savory sauce, soup, stew or casserole better flavor: bacon drippings or real butter. A dash of onion power or garlic powder can also improve the flavor of a savory dish. A can of bacon drippings will store for months in the refrigerator. Never throw away the drippings from cooking bacon. You will be glad you have free bacon drippings for pan-frying food if cooking oil becomes too expensive or too hard to find.
    10) We buy extra bags of shredded cheese and store in our freezer then defrost in our refrigerator when needed. Freezing does not hurt the texture of shredded cheese. Freezing will give a block of cheese or sliced cheese a crumbly texture. If you need sliced cheese for sandwiches but want to store some in your freezer, separate the slices, lay them on a sheet of waxed paper so they do not touch each other and then fold over the waxed paper until your have a bundle of flat cheese slices. Put the bundle inside a freezer bag and store in freezer until needed. Tear off waxed paper sections for the amount of cheese slices you want, let thaw and use on sandwiches. Handle carefully because the slices will tear easily.
    11) Yolk-less egg noodles + canned roast beef + canned mushrooms + canned beef gravy + sour cream. The yolk-less egg noodles will store longer in the pantry that regular egg noodles. Cook the noodles and make a sauce of roast beef chunks (drained), sliced mushrooms (drained) and beef gravy. Remove the simmering sauce from heat and stir in some sour cream. Serve over the pasta as a quick kind of Beef Stroganoff.
    12) Having difficulty finding small bags of frozen vegetables? Go to the fresh produce section and buy bags of fresh, washed whole green beans, cauliflower pieces and broccoli pieces. Put these bags directly in the freezer (or, if the bag has air holes, transfer the raw veggies to freezer type Zip Lock bags and then freeze). Frozen green beans are easy to snap into bite size pieces and cook up fine in a covered dish in the microwave.
    13) Original type Dawn dishwashing detergent is my husband's preferred choice for handwashing non-stick pots and pans because this detergent is very gentle on the hands. Dawn is also gentle enough that it is safe to use as a shampoo or body wash for humans and for pets.
    14) Small jars of instant/freeze-dried coffee for grid-down coffee making. Has a long shelf life. Nescafe brand has the best flavor. Get your best prices at dollar stores instead of Wal-Mart or regular supermarkets.
    15) Packets of instant cocoa mix. This is a good comfort beverage on cold winter days after you have been outside and gotten chilled.
    16) Store your tea bags in a glass canning jar with a tight-fitting lid if the tea bags are not individually wrapped. This will keep them fresh-tasting longer.

I like that you said that it's a marathon not a sprint. I've been a little overwhelmed with everything there is to do to prepare, but I'm trusting in the Lord and I know He's going to see us through...AND I believe there is a blessing on the other side. :o)

    • @homemakingwithdenise
      @homemakingwithdenise  4 года назад +1

Michelle Adams Hi Michelle, do trust in the Lord but also do the work. Step one...make the decision to prepare. Step 2...take inventory of what you have on hand. Step 3..determine family needs. Step 4 start putting food aside. Start with a case of water for each person. Then look at getting in a variety of things including rice and beans and canned meats and toilet paper. Just do it in stages. Send me an email and I’ll send you my meal planner bundle. You can use it to inventory your fridge, freezer, and pantry and then start to plan what to buy.

Here are a couple of recommendations: in case the power grid goes down, I highly recommend purchasing a botane gas camp stove and gas cans to power it. I also recommend highly purchasing 50 pounds of rice per person. I have heard it is highly recommended going into the fall to stock up a six-month food supply to make what's coming more comfortable for you and your family.

    • @homemakingwithdenise

Hi Kori Lynn, I’m going to work towards a six month food supply first then work towards four, and then five, ultimately, six months of food put up. I’ll get more rice. I probably have ten pounds of rice all together. 50mpounds of rice is a lot of rice per person. But I’ll get some more in. I like rice.

Muffins pancakes cookies browines cakesvect. Cornbread and bisquick mix.
All can be made over a fold out camp stove or a charcoal grill. In a cast iron pan. ( iv used muffin mixes for pancakes it works. )
Also keep some canned broth and canned gravy that is heat and serve like instant canned soup can be saftly eaten cold.

Your food storage is shaping up very nicely, Miss Denise! :) Dried/powdered milk, non-fat to whole, doesn't always taste very good to many people when they haven't used it before or often outside of baking with it. I'd like to suggest should anyone new to using them have to, to make the milk the night before if drinking or consuming in cereal and add a teaspoon or less of pure vanilla extract if possible, stirring until the powder is fully dissolved. When chilled overnight this way, the flavor is much more palatable, especially to small and young children.

    • @homemakingwithdenise

Shredded cheese freezes just fine! So does butter, and the Walmart butter comes in a 2 pack to save extra $. Also, if you can find raw local honey, it’s really good for you! Can help with allergies, aid in healing and more! Great for making homemade cough syrup, or in your tea to sooth a sore throat. While milk powder works as a substitute creamer for your coffee. Another thing I'd focus on is oils and fats. My mother-in-law is German and was there during WW2. She said her father became deathly ill because they were so desperate for a bit of fat to cook something in that the mother used MOTOR OIL out of desperation and about killed him. Oils don't last forever so you can store them in the fridge all the time. Another alternative that lasts years past its expiration date is stuff like Crisco shortening which you can use in baking or melt. Granted it's not great for you but hey, are you kidding? I can't imagine being so desperate that I'd use MOTOR OIL to try to cook with but those were not stupid people and it was desperate times. So I have a couple containers of Crisco, plus coconut oil jars.

Tang instead of lemonade. One serving of tang give 100% of daily vitamin C. Bulk up on rice and pasta.... And Seasoning. Taco, chili, beef and chicken bouillon, can turn rice and pasta into so many different meals. Oils and sugar for baking. Multivitamins. You are doing Wonderful! Keep Going !!!!

@ Mrs. Jordan, I like your video and the different items you purchased. The items you showed would fall in the comfort/morale area. That's good because in austere environments rationing those items will be good for you. I'd suggest getting Mr. Jordan out fishing as much as possible to fill your freezer.
Have you heard of Calcium Hypo Chlorite aka "pool shock"? You can buy it online from pool maintenance supply houses. Lean how to use it and you won't have to worry about bleach wipes for a long time. It can also be used in water purification. You'll want it in powder form 68%. Dry-Tec is the brand I have. Store it out of the way. Preferably in a large glass jar with a plastic lid. It will react with metal lids. Don't open it until you need it.
Another item that will be very informative is the Special Operation Force Medical Handbook. It will explain how to use the pool shock and sanitary procedures in austere conditions.
My friend Karl Erickson has a RUclips channel called Tactical Rifleman and he has a couple episodes on water purification.
Welcome to the club and good luck,

The DAK hams, SPAM, Treet, etc. Slice it and FRY it! That really makes it tasty, and it reheats better than bacon. Promise. The texture is sorta like kielbasa sausage, but not. Its like difference between ice cream & frozen yogurt, both are good.
Mac& cheese bxs-choose the ones that have cheese sauce, not cheese powder. Walmart's fancy m&c are very tasty.
Any box mixes, select the ones that only need water. Or oil.
Don't buy water, buy the big bttl of juice. Then you got free bttles for emergency water whenever needed.

I am really enjoying your videos! I am starting a prepper pantry myself and I was starting to have a lot of anxiety around it. You are a very calming influence. I think some of the ideas I hadn’t thought of that you had in your haul were the dried eggs, the whole dried milk and the Gatorade. That’s a great suggestion for illness. One thing I saw on another lady’s channel is getting a 72 hour food supply into a bin that you can just grab and throw in your car if you need to leave your house for an extended period such as a tornado situation or what have you. I thought that was a great idea. She also suggested a blackout box for power outages. It has lanterns and flashlights of various sizes, candles, matches, a lighter, a manual can opener, battery operated personal fans and cooling towels if it’s hot. Also card games, bottles of water for the cooling towels, and baby wipes for whatever, charged up phone chargers and a hand crank radio. I thought that was a great idea as well. She said that should also be thrown in the car if you need to leave.

Good buys!! I think it is so important nowadays especially, if you are able to do so, buy extra when you go to the store and buy with the idea that you're going to set up an emergency food supply. Our local grocery store has BOGO's a lot and if there's a BOGO on items that we normally use, we stock up. We stock up on sale items that we use. We are building up a food pantry that will last us several months in time of dire need. It's also important to rotate these items in to your kitchen when needed but be sure to replenish the pantry! Thanks for sharing!!

--Did you know, that you do not have to buy 'special' refill foaming hand soap? It has to do with the dispenser, not the soap. Just dilute any liquid hand soap and reuse your foaming dispenser.
--I always buy a case when I find a good sale. Recently our discount store had butter for less than $1.50 per pound! I bought 10 and put them in the freezer.
--We like biscuits and gravy. If I happen to be cooking bulk sausage, I save the grease in a container and mix in flour and seasonings to make a paste, sometimes some crumbled sausage too. This is kept in the freezer. When we want sausage gravy, I scoop out enough and cook it up with milk and its good to go. I suppose you could make pre-portioned amounts, it might make life easier.

I may have missed it but I'd definitely get a big supply of bullion cubes in the flavors you use. I'd also buy sauces such as Worchestershire (be sure to taste before you buy a lot as I've found only Lea and Perrins is the brand I like) and soy sauces (same deal, I like Kikoman and not the store brands), and things like that. You can't really make Worchestershire and soy sauce easily yourself. Also I like Crystal Hot Sauce so I make sure to have enough of that. I store some extra stuff like ketchup but I really store a lot of little cans of tomato paste which can easily be turned into ketchup with a bit of water, vinegar and spices. Which also brings up spices...I store those I can't grow myself--like cinnamon, allspice, ginger, and such.

I have been buying frozen turkey burgers, cooking them in a skillet and squirting some bar-b-que sauce on top toward the end of cooking. He LOVES it.. Makes him not miss hamburgers so much. We buy freeze dried food through a company we are affiliated with so we have a 'grocery store' in the basement. One thing we are always on the lookout for is chunky soups on sale. Loved your vid and all the advice. I have been prepping since we were married in 1961. My mom did it so it is what I grew up with. She was a farm girl so they always did it at home, too.
Couple of comments. I would store the opened raisins in jars with a tight lid. Keep them in their inner bags or in plastic bags to separate types of raisins. They will keep fresher. Not only powdered eggs but powdered egg whites are good to have on the shelf, too. We get them in bulk at the Miller's General Store, an Amish store in rural Independence, Iowa. I use them in baking when I am running low on eggs. Don't keep carbonated beverages on your shelves too long. They will loose their fizz. And lastly, use bay leaves in stews and soups as well as to keep weevils out of things. Remove them before serving the soup.
What did I like best? A reminder to have crackers and soups on hand. You are right, when someone is feeling puny, soup and crackers are the things to serve.

Clorox wipes! We haven't been able to get any except through Amazon in months! I live in Arizona. I just discovered your channel and like you, I've been a homemaker for over 45 yrs. I love your channel! You're awesome, dear. 🙂😍

Sandy, when I saw those Clorox wipes just sitting there and that was the only pack, I almost missed it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing then I scooped it right up. I am so glad to get it!

@@homemakingwithdenise It was meant to be! I had a couple of cannisters in my closet. I haven't seen any in stores since the end of February. Clorox (the real stuff) is showing up in a few places.

Bay leaves ? What a great idea. Thank you. Miller's moths are no fun.

I am glad that you included items like mushrooms, barbecue sauce, and butter. Sometimes people get so focused on the basics (beans, rice, canned chicken, etc.) that they forget to get the other things which can make a meal taste really good. It's so important to have pleasing food when we are stressed. I always keep packages of gelatin on hand. Gelatin can be so soothing when somebody isn't feeling well.

Another great video on this topic! The thing I liked the most from your haul (and what I will also be purchasing) is the powder egg and whole milk. 🥰

Hi Jennifer, I've got both of those items linked in the description box. And yes, they were recommended by viewers who are further along on this journey than I am. Did anything else strike your fancy?

Hey Denise, thanks for the great tips for a practical solution to the problems. Try to make Cowboy Coffee. It's very practical & economical plus it tastes great. @ 21:25 about the trash bags, when I was in the Army, one of the things that I learned was to use a used M.R.E. bag to go in & then you'd bury it to hide it & eliminate odors. I found all the items to be interesting. As for the powdered eggs, I would use 2 eggs for every 1 powdered. Thanks for sharing. 😁

New cubbie but I have watched several of your great videos. I have a channel and had been doing makeup videos but in this crazy world it seems like such a waste of time. I really enjoy watching you. I need to start something like this. Your voice is do calming and pleasing to listen to. Keep up the good work and stay safe sweetie.

Very nice haul. Big Lots in my area has a pretty good prices on paper goods. They may not be name brand but the quality is good enough to put back for when the time comes we need our back stock ( we won’t be as picky about brand names we used to use). You are a beautiful and lovely lady, thank you for sharing😊

After viewing your video, I decided to add ginger ale to my secondary pantry. I have bottled and powdered Gatorade. I have bought lots of kitchen and large outdoor trash bags because I thought garage pick up might cease. I found out from you that I may need to use them in my toilet.

corned beef hash is delicious! I introduced my husband to it yesterday for the first time. He seemed to enjoy it. if you're stocking up on foods your family may not be familiar with, be sure to cook some of it for them ahead of time. that way if they hate it you know not to waste your money on it. :-)

I buy blocks of cheese cut up freeze pull out let thaw and it crumbles perfectly no need for shredded cheese unless its on sale. Anytime you can get a product whole all the better, goes for canned foods as well such as tomates pears peaches get them halved less surface the better the products. example whole roast over ground up leaving less exposure to the product contamination..

Hahaha my first experience with corned beef hash was when I was 6 months pregnant with our first and my husband asked me to make some for him. I had horrible morning sickness any way, but smelling that all I could think was “dog food”. To this day, I still cannot bring myself to try it and it still reminds me of that day and how sick I was. But we have a stock pile of it 🤢. Thank you for all of your tips!

It's amazing the things that word even available during lockdown. I had the hardest time getting powdered milk, tuna, canned chicken and I still have been able to get instant potatoes . There's a special kind I get at Walmart and they're very good so it's good to stock up. Remember even though it says flushable wipes their very very bad for the environment so if you use them I do not recommend you flushing them. They get caught in drain pipes under the city and caused a terrible mess. Don't forget to build up your spices also . Granulated garlic dehydrated onion is another thing that's important for us . Things like that . Be sure you also have a battery operated radio . Be sure you have one of your cell phones charged at all times . Even though it might be an old one that you don't use if it's charged you can still call 911 Thank you for sharing

Side note, I store my honey in glass jars only! It keeps better. Even if I get in a plastic container I transfer it to glass.
