Hello I hear you!!!!!!!! I started my food storage when I lefted home due to family abuse/domestic abuse etc. I had no food nowhere to live. I was homeless and would go through dustbins just to feed myself and I could not believe the amount of food people would throw away food. And I promised myself that when I have my own home no matter how small it may be. I will make sure I had enough food for 3 months. It’s all down to you, you really don’t know how much you have help me and for that, every time I pray I will also pray for you and your family. So Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Ashwina from UK.
My mother was raised by her grandparents in the Depression so being prepared is something I grew up with. My husband and step daughter think I'm crazy but there was food on the table every evening (even when the stores had empty shelves) and it's NOT just beans and rice. I'm glad to see others are prepping.
I have been prepping for 8 years so I knew when this pandemic started I knew we were good didn’t have to leave the house it was the best feeling in the world. Only store what you eat. Make a meal plan. It will help you figure out what to buy. And learn how to bake and garden. Can and dehydrate food.
I started doing this before the pandemic, my kids made fun of me asking me when the zombies were coming, then of course the pandemic came and I was prepared, I didn't need anything and when the shelves were bare, I was still ok, it is a great idea to do at any time. Thank you for the video
I did the same! Who had a box of masks? Me!! I’m going to get toilet paper and cleaners just in case we get locked down again, wait, I’m in Michigan so we’re still basically still on lockdown 😡
My grandma too. As a kid I remember there was always food she canned everywhere (under beds, under couches, etc.) Her pantry was giant!!! She was the 'coordinator' of every deer cleaning and taught me the real value of living off the land. She had me rotating foods for her when I was about 5, I thought everyone did it. Lol! My mom and I were very poor while I was growing up and I just learned to be very frugal. *I'm so thankful for the resourceful women in my life and the combo of frugal living and storage practices!*
Mine, also. Plus we lived on top of a mountain and there were no snow plowing the roads. We were poor cotton mill working people and there were no hand outs, save, store and work or you didn't eat!
Do not know about grandmother but my mother was an adult during the depression. Canning and drying was done every year. When freezing came alone it was great! She owned 1 freezer! I have have three and could use an overflow fridge. Family size is 2 - 3. Adult son is trucker so he is seldom home. During the shutdown I changes nothing as I have always have a safety reserve.
If you don't have a spare closet but your closets are deep enough...you can get a bookcase and put it in the back of the closet (you may need to move your clothes' hanging rod forward). A bookcase can hold a lot of dry and canned goods (sugar, oatmeal, canned meats, tuna, etc.). If your living room is big enough you can move sofas away from the wall and stick a shorter bookcase behind it and treat the top like a sofa table but you have the shelves to store foodstuff (soups, tinned beans, nothing that will break open and mess up your furniture).
I used the plastic "sweater-size) bins that fit under my bed. You can get the hard plastic bed risers to get more space underneath. Also, I painted an old 4 drawer file cabinet and put it in my laundry room - have food in there as well.
@@reneesullins3203 We decided to turn an extra room into a pantry and needed shelves. We found bookcases with 2 file drawers as a base. We bought them cheap from a business that was moving. The file drawers work great, especially for home jarred food that need to be stored in a dark place.
With the fires in Oregon where we live, a lot of people were taking in friends and family who were evacuated. We didn’t have to, but it was good to know we had extra supplies on hand if we needed to have more people at our house. We were also able to bag up some things and take them to an evacuation center. Our food storage is for us but also to help others!
My husband and I are retired and we have no pantry so we used the closet in the spare bedroom. I bought those black plastic heavy duty shelves off Amazon and put it right inside the closet! Works great for two people!
I live in an apartment and turned a credenza/entertainment center into a place for can and extra dried good storage. The movies and video games that were in there were moved to a CD binder and I tossed the cases. It works well as there isn’t a pantry, etc.
If you hunt the thrift stores, you can often find the small filing cabinets. They make excellent storage for boxes of stuff as well as soft packages. You can even put one layer of cans in each drawer with lighter items on top.
Yes, Kimmy is in a sense a gift from God walking around on two legs. She lifts me up. I find if I am sad or depressed or anxious. I am so anxious, I can put on a video of Kimmy and calm returns to my spirit.
I’m so happy my husband and I started this last year. We had plenty of flour, rice, dried beans, yeast, and sugar during the beginning of quarantine when stores had empty shelves. It’s so important to have these items on hand!
Buy expensive non perishable items like tampax, soaps, batteries, shampoos, toilet paper ...when on sale. Those will come in handy when you have less money one month for your grocery. Lots of great ideas Kimmy thanks
This was worth a million dollars to watch today.I have been slowly doing this because of winter months coming on and they say the fall will rear it's ugly head again.Try to find things on videos some are so far out I would not touch with a ten foot pole. I will copy the list and fill in where I need to, and go pick some things up on our Costco and store run coming up. THANK YOU THANK YOU. Can not wait for the rest of the story and plan. Stay Safe till the next time.
I'm fairly new here, but one thing I'd advise, is to make sure you get or have a whole-house generator to save your freezer foods in case of extended power outages. I lost $700 of refrigerator/freezer food years ago when we lost power in the middle of summer 96 F and 98% humidity - we lost it for a week. I was able to get some dry ice the first or second day, but after that the food spoiled. My homeowners deductible was too high for a claim like that. Also, I'm on a private well for water, and without a generator had no water either, other than a few bottles we had saved up for flushing. We always think of preparing for winter, but it's worse when you lose power and it is super hot and humid. Perhaps you already have a backup for keeping your freezer and fridge food cold. Otherwise, great advice and video.
We lost power for one whole hour this past week and it was a huge wake up call for me. I know that if things fall apart and we lose power for an extended amount of time all the stuff I have in storage in my freezer will be lost. We definitely have to make getting a generator a priority.
3KVA long running diesel generator 1000quid. No doubt cheaper in the US. As we dash to green solutions, the power grid will become far less reliable. No brainer....get one with fuel storage and maintenance kit
Just redid my walk in 8'X8" pantry. Unloaded everything, cleaned, painted, new floor and new industrial shelving. We have about 9 months -1 year of food ect. I did learn that my weak spots were my fur kids. I'm now stocking up for them before November. I feel another trip to the Amish bulk store and bent and dent's in my future! I lOVE my pantry. I haven't felt the need to run to the grocery store when they predict 12"+ snow storms anymore.
My husband and I are planning to add an addition to our house for a pantry. I’m roughly planning an 8x8. Do you find that you have a good amount of space in there? We’re also wanting to put our chest freezer in there as well. It’s hard for me to picture the finished product, so I’d love to know what you think about the size. Thanks. We’re a family of 4.
@@annajackson2239 Make the doorway wide enough to get your freezer in & out and, of course, plan for a GFI electrical circuit so if something causes your freezer to defrost, you don't electrocute yourself standing in a puddle in front of it.
I like to buy one extra thing every week since budget is tight. For example one week I buy one box of pasta plus one extra. Some canned goods are less than $1 so I’d buy a couple extra
Exactly how I set up my “back stock.” I’m aiming at a month of extra. I walk to my grocery, and winter is often a low motivation time for walking with the granny cart. I’m now a household of three, but we each buy our own food. Different diets. So I’m buying for one.
When we moved out of state and checked for the grocery stores near the new home, I made a list of what we needed the first week we moved in, then on a day off I went to the cheapest grocery store we had save-a-lot and I’d Wright down the price of the items. Then the second week I would decided if we like most foods from save-a-lot and “x” out what we didn’t like. What we didn’t like them I’d go to publix and Walmart and do the same thing and get the cheapest brands (Walmart or Publix). I’d we loved those brands then I made a note and I kept going every week until I barely made any changes. It’s a long process but I save money according to our taste because sometimes if you spend more money doesn’t always mean it’s better
I basically buy the cheapest brand and move up the brand ladder until we love that one brand. For example save-a-lot is cheapest store. Their canned corned it’s the that great, then the next week I try Walmart, the 3rd week I try Publix, 4th week I find that target brand of canned foods are best then I buy their canned goods from now on. **remember I do t sponsor any of them and don’t favor any brands over the other this is just an example)
When I first decided to prep I bought a bunch of stuff that went to waste. What I do now and it works well for me is to buy two. When I open a new item, for example a new bottle of ketchup, I will buy two. One to replace what I used and one to stock up. After a year I had a stock pile of a years worth of items I actually use in the right quantity. When I bought a parishable item like milk, I would buy a non parishable version as well. This includes all house hold items like soap and zipl9ck bags. You will be amazed how quickly things build up fast. Of course not everyone one has the ability to double their shopping list. But just wanted to share what worked for me.
Such good advice as always. You’re absolutely right, it’s not always for a natural distance or pandemic. Income loss, illness, etc can happen to anyone at anytime.
It's nice to see so many people sharing this message. We have been doing this for years...people laughed at us until the whole TP rush happened and guess who they all turned to!! Second wave is expected here in Canada and some of my American friends are still in the thick of it....so be prepared folks!!
It is very common in Europe to do, (probably passed on from the ww II generation, it is still something we naturaly learn from our parents. Our parents stocked up, so we don't think twice and do it too mentality.) Sometimes not as organized as kimmy here, but all people I know have some sort supply to last for a while.
when my kids couldn't find TP good old mom (the hoarder) mailed them 30 rolls. They laughed for years about my storage but were quick to call when they couldn't find stuff.
Since you make double or triple batches of your family favorites, buy the industrial sized cans of corn, green beans, etc. Often the price per ounce is much cheaper.
I love that you only do 3 months, especially for freezer meals. I've been dealing with people that don't toss expired frozen food (mostly beef), and omg is the kitchen disgusting. I HATE FOOD HOARDING! I praise you for thinking ahead and planning so much!
This is so important for my family as my daughter has multiple food allergies and can only eat very limited options of cereal, pasta, snacks and meat. When Covid hit and everyone was panic buying we genuinely could not get the specific brands she needed and feeding her was so hard! Makes me so angry at the hoarders and panic buyers. We are prepared now - not a full 3 months - but we won’t get stuck or run out of her special foods again!
We just moved into a new home that has a huge closet downstairs but were using it as a pantry. Finally have a space to store our dry/canned foods! We are slowly adding to it to get ready for fall/winter in case things get bad again.
In our last home we had a space issue - I swapped two bed frames out to platform mattress frames. Oh my, the storage I had under the beds! So much! You’d be amazed at what fits under a bed. Years ago I started buying 1-2 items a shopping trip. Over the years I’ve built up a good size short term prep/pantry system. I check my inventory visually each month, fill in holes as sales come up, or as needed. Then about 1-3x/year I inventory, adjust on-hand amounts according to use, and do a big shopping trip.
Yes! We have a platform bed in our guest room. We store our Christmas tree and tons of cases of water under it. The platform base wasn’t too expensive either.
If you fill a freezer it’s a good idea to have a generator. You can buy a good one for $500. We had a power outage last week and were able to keep our fridge and freezers cold. Some households lost power for 6 days and lost everything because they didn’t have a generator. If you get a generator make sure it works and you have extra fuel and oil for it. Do your research.
Trina’s Aussie Garden Freezers and fridges suck A LOT of power. Another good idea is to have canning jars and a pressure canner on stand by. You may save some of the freezer contents by canning.
Laura Hirsche I do can a lot but canning that amount of food would take weeks lol. Easier to plug into a generator when the lights go out for a day or few.
Pardon my lack of knowledge on generators, but how do you store the gas needed for them? I would think it would be dangerous to have extra cans of gas in the garage or wherever.
jean massey we store ours in a cool dry place. Our cars and lawnmowers have gas in them too and haven’t had one blow up yet☺️ but as with anything one should do ones own research on what works best for them in their own circumstances.
I’m 23 and I’ve wanted to start my stockpile for a while and wasn’t sure where to start! Thank you, this was super helpful and gave me really good inspiration. Thank you for all you do on this channel 💕
Buy a little something extra every time you do your grocery shopping, and before you know it you'll have a nice stockpile and you won't feel like you broke the bank.
Be conscious of the sales coming up around the holidays. I stock my broths, stuffing mix, baking and canned vegetables for the year during those sales. Canned goods will also go on sale in Jan/Feb.
Last year I had to move from a townhome with a nice food storage room in the basement to an apartment. And figuring out how to organize my food storage has been a headache. Thankfully after some prayer I figured out how to use the closet space efficiently and on a budget. I have two extra closets to use and of course under beds. Those flat plastic bins you get for storing wrapping paper are wonderful to put some storage in and roll under the bed. They fit perfectly and it's organized. Thank you for sharing this video. I have friends I have been teaching about food storage and I will refer them to this because of how well you advise us to plan it out.
Thank you for this! We are on month 5 of my husband being laid off....we do want to have food storage, but it's hard doing on tight budget...this was helpful!
I love these videos Kimmy. I’ve been buying extra food (just a little at a time) every time I go grocery shopping. I don’t want to be one of those people going to the store and they are completely out of what I need.
Its just my husband, me and 🐕 Bella. I started storing food, water and paper products after Super Storm Sandy. I have Celiac disease so I have to store gluten free food for my self.
I want to say thank you for this video and the free printable. My husband and I have been wanting to do this for so long. Our 28-year-old daughter moved out and is living in South Africa for the next three years as a full-time missionary for YWAM So we converted her closet and some space in her room to be our food pantry. We'd been stocking up each trip to the store buying a little extra. Now we both feel much better heading into flu season knowing we are well stocked just in case.
I love watching your videos and learning how other people stockpile. I live in an apartment. I also rent a garage that is located within walking distance of my apartment. I keep my big freezer and lesser used small kitchen appliances in the garage. I have a 48"×18"×6' wire shelving unit in my bedroom where I keep my stockpile. The "pantry" in this apartment is 4 shelves that are 12"deep and 24" across. I use those shelves to hold items for the meals I plan to prepare within 2 weeks. The refrigerator and freezer in my apartment are small as well. I use it like I do my pantry...just what I need for 2 weeks. I also use the small freezer to portion foods, freeze, then bag them for the big freezer. I keep a clipboard at the big freezer so I know what's in it and when I put it in there. I make my menus based on what I have available, then can add any fresh veggies or fruits, milk, eggs etc to my shopping list. When store ads come out I look to see what I need to replace in my stockpile. If I find a good deal, I can replace what I've used. This system seems to work good for me. Oh, and I have a little wagon that I use to carry my groceries and appliances back and forth to my garage. Makes things easier for me. I'm 71 and have been stockpiling for decades but took it more seriously in the past 5 years. Thankfully it paid off during Covid and the 2 serious ice storms we experienced in Texas the last 2 winters. I never lost power.so was able to help out some of my neighbors, who I am now teaching how to stockpile.
Kimmie , I was so glad to hear you say food insurance. I used this term in a video last week and I believe it resonated with my viewers and hearing you say it certainly resonated with me. Your video just made so much since and hopefully, will help ease the fears and reduce panic buying. Thank you for these ideas. I will definitely share this video with my viewers. I’m going to work on more canned veggies this weekend. Again, thank you for this video.
Loved this! We turned our coat closet into a pantry, we added those shelves and I love my pantry! We hang our coats in the foryer on an over the door hook. We also have a tote for shoes. This works dor our family!
for 20 plus years of my 40 year marriage I have always shopped for holiday food and baking and put it in my deep freezer and pantry above the refrigerator. Since covid I started to shop for 3 months for us and our cats needs because I hate shopping for the holidays or regular food during those months. Especially this year too many lines too many people I even purchased my Christmas and birthday things already. I kinda panic bought because of Nov election coming. But it's all good.
Love the video .. I to have a good supply for food when Covid hit we were fine .. It only took once for my boys to learn to stock up and they don’t make fun of mom anymore..
My house has 2 kitchens because we have a 2 bedroom apartment in our basement. Both kitchens are full of food! Immediate use stuff upstairs and food storage downstairs. We probably have a years worth. Maybe more if you include the food buckets containing rice, beans, sugar, pasta, etc.
Hi Kimmy, I really enjoyed this video of your food storage ideas you come across so easy to understand and it makes sense! I like the way you talk and scanned your camera showing us your food on your shelves it made me feel as if I was there with you. You want us to prepare for our family like you do for your family and I appreciate that very much💕keep your videos coming your good at what you do. Take care🙆♀️🙏💕👋👍🌻🤗 Here in Cali.
you might consider using lentils to stretch your ground beef! do 1/2 ground beef 1/2 lentils, maybe start with 3/4 beef 1/4 lentils. This works particularly well in tacos and chili and stuff like that :)
Seriously the best food storage video I've seen in a long time! KImmie your awesome and thank you so so much for all your hard work in doing these videos every week!
I started this last year when Covid hit, and I will continue to do this now. I love the idea of only grocery shopping every 3 months or so. Love how organized you are!!
A few more reasons to have "food insurance"... Food prices will never go down. In the past decade prices have increased over 30%, and I'm sure y'all have seen price gouging during the pandemic as well. Also, there is always bad crop seasons. Seeing that Iowa corn fields were hit hard this year, next year you will see higher prices on corn. Perhaps many of you noticed the huge increase of vanilla prices these past few years? That's because Madagascar vanilla crops were effected by flooding and totaled out their crops a few years ago. Word on the street is olives, peas, and rice have all been hit with various issues so watch for those items as well. So, perhaps pick up that bag of rice and a couple extra cans of peas before those too go up in price. I also like to have a variety of extra food on hand to help our friends and family during tough times. A few extra boxes of pasta, rice, bagged beans, and canned food has kept a few families from going hungry during these crazy times and having it on hand made me feel good that I was able to help in a small way.
Random tip for whoever needs to hear this: Vanilla is SO easy to make. Cheap vodka + vanilla beans. I bake a ton and my first bottle lasted about 6 years before I ran out. I currently have 2 bottles that will be ready to use soon. The beans are a little pricey when you first look at them, but it lasts forever and is great quality.
@@annajackson2239 I've always wondered about this. what is the ratio as in oz of vodka to vanilla beans? I want to do this. thanks also for posting here!
@cindyb I use a regular-size bottle of vodka (750 ml) and about 10 vanilla beans. It’s cheap 80 proof vodka. There are lots of recipes online. People make all kinds of extracts. Make sure you get vanilla beans used for extractions. I found mine on Amazon. I just cut them longways, stick them in the bottle (remove a smidge of liquid to create room for water displacement), and shake the bottle daily for a while and then maybe weekly after that. It’s best to wait 6 months before using it. It lasts forever.
This is perfect timing! Getting ready to have our first child 10/10 so each paycheck I am stocking up for postpartum and since I will be a stay at home mom when he comes!
I just thought of this while watching the video... If you have a store that has the online ordering you go pick up, or you can just make a list on the app for.. make a list of all those staples you're wanting to rotate in your stock pile. That way that list is ALWAYS there, and you can add to it when you need more of that item and not accidentally space off a certain item. If you have an allotted amount per check to spend, calculate it up in the app. It'll help SO MUCH!
I miss the case lot sales in Utah but miss our storage room. Food storage isn’t really a “thing” where we are, so there is a lack or storage areas, but we’ve gotten creative with space. We’ve put our TP, paper towels and paper goods in our garage to free up space in the house. Anything that the hot/cold won’t hurt. Love, love, live your storage room...
Hi Kim, newer subscriber here. I really enjoy your channel. Thank you for all the great tips for prepping & storage. I am making sure that my pantry is always stocked now for my family. I learned the hard way when the lockdown began and was not prepared, especially the toilet paper..lol.
I try to meal plan around sales and buy double the ingredients I need so I have food storage. I also bulk buy six months worth of shelf stable ingredients when there's a good bargain on them. We buy meat when it's at its best price and wrap it with our Food Saver. I've been doing this for years to save money.
Kim this was great my husband and I have built up a 41day supply our goal is to get to 60 days and we are apartment people we storage extra foods and supplies in our night stands we didn't use the space before now.
In two of our bedrooms, the room door when open is about 12" from the wall. We build a closet/cupboard the size of the door. When the door to the bedroom is open, it is the closed door to the closet/cupboard and vice-versa. Even if you only have a few inches between the door & wall, you can build shelves for all sorts of things.
I have a huge linen closet and use one half of this for storage plus my normal pantry it works very well. My son calls it the supermarket. So with this storage and two 700L chest freezers, nicknamed “the coffins”, we are well stocked. I’ve not panic bought or am hoarding if always shopped like this my mum did it and now I do the same lol!
Barbara Lent I’ve lived in Nederland, CO, where we have Grandpa Breedo in a freezer. They hold Frozen Dead Guy Days in March. “Coffins” is a perfect nickname.
I tend to write the expiration/best by date on the top of all my cans. Sometimes when you buy things, the last one purchased is not the latest date. It also helps me learn how long each type of food lasts.
My husband might not be thankful for my aprons but he is thankful that years ago i fallowed your guide and started a food storage. Its the best thing ever. When stores were closed i had enough food to feed my family, donate to the salvation army and help friends who needed a few odds and ends. I went through almost everything stored in that time and have rebuilt it again. I hit the buy one get ones, Case sales and coupon on things i can. We are a one income family of four with 4 fur children added haha. But we are blessed my husband is also a hunter.
Thank you for a well-rounded video that covers everything that I need to know. Also, I like your video because you got straight to the major points and your explanations were not winding like some of the videos from other preppers.
After watching a few other videos on this I almost felt like panic buying. Your video is so helpful in getting me clear on how to start and make good decisions being that I am new at this. Thanks for the clarity.
Great video, we don’t use any sugar or gluten grains, but while we don’t eat rice, corn or lentils, we do have so,e of that for our back up for our backup.
When my mom moved in, for the last few years of her life, she needed a tv stand. Hubby hauled some food storage boxes in there and we covered it with a nice blanket. Worked out great! Do you have an empty book shelf, put some canned goods there and add a little curtain with a spring rod to hold it up. Use up your empty spaces.
I'll be moving this fall and I finally will get a pantry. Not a walk in or anything but it's the width of 2 doors. 4 shelves. I also have a huge bedroom closet to store extras. Every winter is hard for me to get out and go shopping, so I'm going to try stocking the entire pantry for the entire snow season. I get most of my groceries delivered from Walmart and Superstore. But will be going to Costco to stock up on lunch meat, Hotdogs, Pancake Mix, syrup, Cereal and Popcorn. Possibly sugar, flour and yeast too
I have always adopted this idea. Is something on sale that I use regularly? Buy more than one and store the others. Is there a great meat sale? Get an extra. With Thanksgiving and Christmas approaching, think turkey and hams. They freeze so well and last so long. And while I do love a turkey roasted at Thanksgiving, it’s even better smoked in a smoker mid July!!
Thank you so much for this video Kimmy! I have been working on this for my family since I got married last year and even more since our first baby is due next month and this video was so helpful!
I also wrote the dates on the packages and cans. Have you thought about Velveeta mac and cheese? They make a variety where you don't need milk. I also got some extra breakfast protein drink powder mixes. Might try to get some shelf stable milk
Food insurance, I like that! I've been watching you for years now and have been building my pantry up since. During the virus crazy shopping I didn't need to worry about food. Toilet paper, however, we'll let's just say I am ready now😂 a pack at a time adds up! This pandemic has shown me the holes that I need to work on. Great video!💜
How do you do your grocery budget? What do you add for food storage amounts? Can you make a grocery budget video for the month? To include regular meal planning and food storage amounts?
I have always tend to buy in bulk just to save money going out more often, not having to carry these things all the time, we are an extended all family living in separate units in our home but under one roof. I buy boxes of salt, tomato sauces, condiments, pasta, washing up liquid etc. then I don’t have to keep going out. Important essentials would be flour, sugar, rice, powdered milk, yeast etc and the like. Same goes for tissues and kitchen rolls etc.
Great ideas I’ve been starting a three month storage plan for me and my husband rotating my food putting dates on top of the cans when it expires helps a whole lot and when winter gets here I think this virus is really going to hit and it’s going to get hard again so I’ve been getting prepared for that I’m not in a panic but I’m just getting myself prepared thanks for the video
Thanks for sharing your storage and knowledge with us. We’ve been doing this as long as I can remember and people used to make fun of us for doing it like it was a waste of money. Then we laughed 🤭 at everyone when they were running out during the pandemic on a pure panic. We were sitting pretty! 😆🥳🥳🥳
I live in Southern California and what's going on has made me very alert of what is coming next. Food Shortages are next they are shutting down farms and COVID is going to go affect EVERYTHING! Remember The Great Depression don't repeat history and survive to the tell the story how you got through 2020 and 2021 along with following years.
You really got my brain wheels spinning, in a good way! I'm going to be checking my extra storage items to see where I'm at and what I need. Thanks for this Kimmy!
I’d love to see a video with tips on moving your food storage. With cans being so heavy, how did you pack them so you could move them efficiently to your new house?
We are two seniors and I too thought it would be best to stock up on our dry/canned goods...my pantry food. So I went to my cupboards and wrote down what I had...then went onto to Walmart grocery and ordered enough for a few months. It worked so well....after we picked it up...all we had to do was remove from car! Saved us finding them in the stores...going thru a checkout...loading into car. And this was all heavy items...just a tip for you! Thanks Kimmy...love your storage room!
Our offer on our first house was just accepted and I can't wait to start a food storage! Thanks for the video and looking forward to ur next video on how to store for long term💕💕💕
This was fantastic info. Seeing your room felt very comforting to me as I’m doing the same thing. I don’t think it’s ever “done” as we need to use all that food and rotate. Well done girly.
Love this video, we’re on vacation until next Thursday, we were suppose to be in Barbados, however we’re both high risk, so we had a home day yesterday and prepped food. This video is awesome and has inspired me to do more. Love and light!!
I'd suggest large container storage for the sugar, flour, and dry goods. 5 gallon or so storage buckets which are air tight and rodent / insect deterrent. One infestation of ants or mice can really mess up the storage closet. Plastic storage containers block the scent that brings in the critters.
My mom would do this when I was a kid, now that I have my own house and 3 kids and live in Florida I make sure i have a lot of extra canned goods. If I get down to like 10 cans I know I am running low.
During wave one, I bought everything on the DHS list. I found we did not say a bunch of stuff like boxes Mac and cheese because my kids did not like that stuff. Now for wave two, I am trying to only stock up on foods we would normally eat.
Thank you for the video Kimmie; very informative and helpful! Your food storage pantry looks great! I had to laugh when you said, "Use a coat closet." Because thats exactly what we did!! Our pantry is small so we had to create more space for our 3 month supply of food!! It's working out great!! Take care & stay safe 💕
My dad was awesome at shopping the sales. He knew the rotation of sale items an planned / shopped accordingly. I never picked that up from him but making sure we always have some extra food storage I have. My goal is a 3 month supply to rotate. I also have been slowly adding long term storage. How do you do water? I am wanting to have 2-3 months of water storage as well.
I checked with the USDA regarding Peanut Butter storage .. they said that PB goes rancid quickly and will cause Botulism so... Long term storage is best by freezing PB and put the entire jar win a food saver bag (do not remove PB from jar) remove the air with the food saver machine when time comes to use just defrost and the PB will not be rancid ...
You can freeze cheese and just need to remember to let it sit out for 24 hours. The oils need to reabsorb before you put it back into the fridge. And no, it won't go bad sitting out.

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I did the same! Who had a box of masks? Me!! I’m going to get toilet paper and cleaners just in case we get locked down again, wait, I’m in Michigan so we’re still basically still on lockdown 😡
Who's crazy now ! I hope your kids apologised before they got any of it ...
the answer: 2020 lol
I have been filling my pantry too. No problems during lockdowns. Why can't others see the need?
My grandmother was a child during the great depression and I remember her always keeping an amazingly stocked pantry at her house when I was a child.
Mine too💗
Mine, also. Plus we lived on top of a mountain and there were no snow plowing the roads. We were poor cotton mill working people and there were no hand outs, save, store and work or you didn't eat!
Mine too, she was always canning
Oh good idea on the sofa bookcase front ...🤔 I'm looking for ways to hide some of my preps what a good idea cheers
Cheyanne, I have a friend who lives in a studio apt and she took an old dog crate she got free, threw a tablecloth over it and calls it an end table.
Omg, that is SO SMART! I applaud you for thinking of that idea! I'll have to remember it.
I hate when apartments don't have a pantry. Luckily we have a small linen closet in the hallway and we use that.
If you hunt the thrift stores, you can often find the small filing cabinets. They make excellent storage for boxes of stuff as well as soft packages. You can even put one layer of cans in each drawer with lighter items on top.
Way to work with what you have 🤗
Never fails, I always learn something new from this lady, so happy to have her for great ideas.
Thank you Sherry.
Good morning ! I did stock on food more when my kids where all home but now seems like for just 2 people we would not use it fast enough
Exactly how I set up my “back stock.” I’m aiming at a month of extra. I walk to my grocery, and winter is often a low motivation time for walking with the granny cart. I’m now a household of three, but we each buy our own food. Different diets. So I’m buying for one.
Slow and steady wins the race 🤗
My father was Italian and lived through the depression...we always had a big garden and he always canned food... I get it from him I guess
Lol yup!!!!
@@lynhanna917 Moms are the best ;)
Since you make double or triple batches of your family favorites, buy the industrial sized cans of corn, green beans, etc. Often the price per ounce is much cheaper.
I love that you only do 3 months, especially for freezer meals. I've been dealing with people that don't toss expired frozen food (mostly beef), and omg is the kitchen disgusting. I HATE FOOD HOARDING! I praise you for thinking ahead and planning so much!
When items are coming to their end date ,I put them on a tray in the kitchen and plan my meals around them to use them up.
@Elle Hobbs
I know the feeling. I have dairy, egg, soy, and gluten allergies.
And it’s all stuff I regularly use! 👍🏻
@@rhiahlMT yous are so lucky with sales over there, we don't get sales like that here unfortunately
Yes, food insurance is a thing. So many of us don’t think about it like that. I’m going to watch your channel as well. 🥰
I definitely want to start preparing this for our family of 12. It’s time to start our stock pile! 💓
You should check out Jamerill Stewart on RUclips! She has a large family too.
Smart move!
I store cans of soups and veggies under my bed.
It’s a perfect space and the only thing under there is dust...lol
Those underbed storage bins hold a LOT of food!
I do that too. Ran out of room in my panty. Wish I had a huge pantry like she does but I digress.
Yup kick those dust bunnies out and use that space LOLOL
I have started my 3 month food storage, Thank you so much for your help. God bless your family.
Take care🙆♀️🙏💕👋👍🌻🤗
Here in Cali.
Thank you Monica!
you might consider using lentils to stretch your ground beef! do 1/2 ground beef 1/2 lentils, maybe start with 3/4 beef 1/4 lentils.
@@annajackson2239 thank you so much. I look forward to giving it a try.
I went and bought several cans of hominy because of what happened in iowa...we use it in pozole, dips, etc...
This is perfect timing! Getting ready to have our first child 10/10 so each paycheck I am stocking up for postpartum and since I will be a stay at home mom when he comes!
Congratulations! 💗 💙
Thanks for the tip. I was running out of ideas as I live in a one bed apartment
don't forget about under the beds, plastic bins that slid under the bed are great for tins.
@@lynhanna917 yes that will be our next spot.
I've got 32 cases under my bed....

Cream style corn is great for breakfast over biscuits, My grandma used feed us this sometimes for breakfast instead of gravy.
I feel like your food storage is looking better than ever!!! Awesome job!
Barbara Lent
I’ve lived in Nederland, CO, where we have Grandpa Breedo in a freezer. They hold Frozen Dead Guy Days in March. “Coffins” is a perfect nickname.
I tend to write the expiration/best by date on the top of all my cans. Sometimes when you buy things, the last one purchased is not the latest date. It also helps me learn how long each type of food lasts.
Thanks for emphasizing being CALM! It's fine to have food storage, but people are panic buying. Scary!
Possibly sugar, flour and yeast too
That's funny, I had my hubby turn our coat closet into food storage!!! TFS and take care.........
Agreed
Good morning Kimmy! Your food storage room looks fantastic! Those are very useful tips as always. Have a wonderful day 😉❤️.
This video was so well done and very informative. Thank you. This will help me get started. We normally carry 1-2 months but I’m wanting to do better.
Just watched Pegi&don and learned an easy 2 ingredient biscuit. I'm loving all the ideas out here. Thank you for sharing🌸🌸🌸
Thank you for sharing, you have helped me so much over the years and now I’m building my food storage
Kim, you truly are a godsend. Thank you Sister.
I love how you explained everything I now understand how and why to start prepping
Thanks for sharing. What do you always eat..buy that to store. Light bulb!!!! For some reason things finally clicked about how to go about doing this!
Our offer on our first house was just accepted and I can't wait to start a food storage! Thanks for the video and looking forward to ur next video on how to store for long term💕💕💕
ASMR Destination Sleep
How exciting! Congratulations!
@@veronicageorge7820 thank u so much! Its been a long hard road but finally!💕
I need to work on this for when I’ll be on Maternity Leave in March. And Freezer Meals. 😍
We’ve got a stock pile never looked back
I went through 3 food savers. I use it all the time. I freezer meal cook.
New subscriber I don't have much room however I have slowly started my food storage.
Blessing
Welcome!!
Excellent video! I am constantly looking for more info. You are such an inspiration!!
You can freeze cheese and just need to remember to let it sit out for 24 hours. The oils need to reabsorb before you put it back into the fridge. And no, it won't go bad sitting out.
