I grew up the youngest of 8 in 1960s England and we were hungry. There was never any food in the cupboards and I was very underweight. When I married and had children of my own, I was determined that they'd never experience what I had and so my food storage journey began. For 35 years, my cupboards and freezer have held everything we might need to survive on for at least 3 months and I've instilled this in both my kids. My motto is buy what you eat and eat what you buy, but always be prepared. This was a great video. Thanks Kimmy and happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

I too have stocked presses and when lockdown happened the first time here I didn't leave the house for over 2 months, everyone was going crazy, empty shelves etc but I had prepared early and had everything. Husband would pick up fruit/veg and milk on way home from work. There's even worse times ahead of us now!

The best part about food storage is that every thinks it's for big disasters the SHTF events, but it is so handy for lifes smaller hiccups as well. You get sick, don't have to shop. Lose a job, at least you have food. Friend or family need help, you have the supplies to help them. If you're storing the food please make sure you're storing it well & for the love of god use what you store, rotate stock in & out. Also don't buy things you don't know how to use. Learn to cook dry beans, learn to grind wheat & bake bread now, not in an emergency.

So many people have been so spoiled with so much food available all around them. They cannot imagine being without food! If you ever go through a prolonged storm system, flood, earthquake, very long illness where you can't work, you would sing a different tune. The problem is that these people can't even imagine something like this happening, even with it all over television. Yes, America is a mighty Country, but extreme wealth produces weak and spoiled offspring! Get a clue people, hard times ARE coming soon! Because the sack containing oxygen absorbers should only be open for 15 minutes max, I fill all of my buckets first and then open the sack and finish the process. If I have any absorbers left over, I put them in a canning jar and use the jar sealer attachment for the FoodSaver to suck out all the oxygen from the jar.

I learned the hard way. After hurricane Maria threw Puerto Rico back to 1900 in a heart beat. Absolutely no services for the first month not even post office. Food?? Our Walmart was kinda stocked after 3 months. Kinda. The supermarket's took about a year to fully come back. It was the Army k -rations that feed us. So hard lesson but at least I learned. Food storage is a important topic. Especially for people with kids. They really don't understand. They only know that they are hungry.

I work for a grocery store, it'll be 3 years in June. When the pandemic hit, our shelves got wiped. People panicked and bought practically everything in sight. There are still supply chain shortages going on and it's been over a year since the start of it all. Of course natural weather disasters have played a role in the supply chain shortages but it hasn't stopped no matter what the weather has been around the world. Food storage I believe is essential and I've had to start showing my husband how to stock up on certain things to help make sure we don't run out because despite working at a grocery store, I'm so busy working that I don't have time to shop myself so I have to shop after customers and not all the time are things left. My store also has a policy where employees aren't allowed to buy things while on the clock so it makes things harder when there are rushes of people who want to buy whatever is being put out. Love the information in the video though :)

When sealing powdery foods in your Food Saver, you can drape a paper towel over the opening of your powdery product to keep the machine from sucking in the powder (powdered milk, flour, etc.). The paper towel is a useful filter 😃

For someone who hasn’t had much experience with freeze dried food it would be nice to see what a meal looks like prepared from these ingredients especially ones like in your mother-in-law’s food storage ie: broccoli, zucchini, chicken, beef etc etc

If you’ve ever eaten the fancy ramen noodles with the veggies in it, that’s freeze dried :). The strawberries that are in some of those breakfast cereals are freeze dries too. If you’re super curious, you can find freeze dried fruits (and some veg) in small amounts at Trader Joe’s. If you want to try freeze dried, I suggest diced onions (use in any recipe that needs onions, except maybe onion soup), green peas (if you like those) and bananas (SO yummy used in overnight oats). Walmart (ain’t some stores) sell some freeze dried food in their camping section. Add a little extra liquid when you use freeze dried things in a recipe, you don’t usually need to hydrate them .

My husband’s job takes him to trucking companies, warehouses, etc. The trucking companies are having problems locating tires and their supplies are dwindling - some places have less than 30% of what they need. If the trucks don’t have tires, they can’t run. If they can’t run, the shelves in the stores will bare. Stock up now if you haven’t already.

I have always wanted, a cold storage room, but you dig down 12 feet in Florida, and you hit water lol. No basement for us! I like to use 2 liter bottles, for dry storage also. As long as they are clean, and the lid is threaded, and makes an airtight seal, you can fill it with dry ingredients, add in a couple bay leaves and oxygen absorbers, and you are good to go. I have some oddly shaped spaces, that are too small for buckets or bins. They are stacked with 2 liter bottles of grits, beans, rice, pasta, oatmeal, sugar, salt......... Very manageable also.

We in Florida were used to having to do this kind of thing way before corona. We’ve seen long lines, empty shelves, so many times over the years, it was kind of a dress rehearsal for Rona, and let me tell you it’s scary. But at least we kinda knew already what to do when Rona hit. Only difference is we now have realized there are a lot more reasons to prep than hurricanes and that we need to prep long term like for six months or a year and not just for hurricane season every year.
We also realized that we need to prep EVERYTHING we use including medicines, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, etc. Hurricanes give you forewarning and a window to prepare, but with other things that happen, like you said, you’re caught with your pants down. Even if you can only prepare for a month or three months or six months, that gives you some time to figure something out or concentrate on just paying your rent/mortgage and other bills rather than your food bill. Love you for doing this. I hope a lot more people are convinced by this video to start prepping/preparing.

I don’t know if it’s a culture thing, but here in Brazil we don’t do this. Not at all. We don’t can food, we don’t build months of food storage. With the pandemic, we didn’t have a problem of finding food, cause we don’t panic buy. You could find everything you needed. But I’m fascinated by the different ways people plan and how the mind set chances when we have different backgrounds and experiences.

Two hints: I get 100, 300, and 500cc oxygen absorbers. Once I open a package, I divide them into smaller numbers and put them in very small mason jars and seal them with a food saver jar lid sealer so the air gets sucked out. This way I only expose a few packs to air ( and oxygen) at a time and can reseal them right away so my oxygen absorbers stay effective.
Second, basmati and long grain rice ( don’t know about jasmine or brown rice) are typically aged ( in India and all of the Middle East) for them to be better. Just store in a cool dry and dark place add some salt to it control vermin and moisture. Have you noticed that premium rice comes in breathable burlap ( those with a plastic inner bag have perforations in the plastic to let air in!)

BEGINNERS: If you plan on buying the long term foods, it's best to get a few items that you plan on opening NOW to test it out and learn what you like and don't like. The cheese will NOT melt down like you are used to with fresh cheese. The carrots will NOT get super soft like a fresh carrot cut up in a stew. These are things you will want to know NOW, not down the road when you're trying to make pizza with dehydrated cheese when SHTF!
Personally, I LOVE long term food for many reasons and I use the vegetables regularly. Onions, celery, carrots, bell peppers, tomato powder, and mushrooms are fantastic, especially if you live in snowy climates and don't want to venture out in a storm for veggies for that crockpot soup you have your heart set on. The fruit is also great! Makes fantastic pies and syrups for pancakes or ice cream. Get to know your long term foods before you spend a small fortune on them! I've been doing this over a decade and know what to expect. Now is the time to experiment, not when the power actually goes out!

Stupid question here. Why not put the flour into two or three bags? Rarely do you use that amount of flour at one time. It gets stale once it's opened. This way it stays fresh longer.
I never knew that you could do this with mylar bags. What are the oxygen packs for? Or are those those thingies that help keep it dry? Thanks for the video. We always have back up. Just not like you have in the buckets. Those are a great idea in case you need to leave your home. Thanks for this video.
By the way. Powder milk is like twinkies. It last forever! There isn't a expiration date for it. Even if it's on the package.

I was just telling my husband this morning that I probably don't really need to go to the store to get anything. But I will look at the food I have, what's on sale and see what I can get...or maybe this week, work on not just food, but other types of supplies, like medicine etc. Great information on this video.

@@shesinherapron I’m excited to watch this series with you! We are just getting started and researching and learning from everyone we can.
One thing I wanted to mention was breaking your Mylar bags down smaller. Like your flour, rice and beans make smaller bags and still put them all into the same bucket. This way you open a smaller amount and don’t expose more than you can use in a viable amount of time. Also seal higher up on the bag so that you can cut that section off and still have room to reseal if needed.
Just some ideas I’ve come across.

  • @purplepauline

When you heat mylar bags just do the very end of the bag when you cut open youcan then reuse the the bag again without downsizing the bag too much the oxygen absorber will still work creating vacuum

    • @nolacockerham4823
      @nolacockerham4823 3 года назад +8

Agreed. And, if you TURN the household iron on its side and just use the edge, it will work better. I do two lines all the way across for added security and then just roll the excess into the bucket. Then you can reseal The whole shebang (technical term).

I utilize my food saver jar sealer attachment to store dry goods in glass jars as well. One thing to point out you don’t have to have a large space or dedicated room. I utilize a shelving unit in my utility room. Most importantly keep inventory & use what you have, this keeps it rotating. Never buy something you wouldn’t eat.

This is great information. I started my prepping journey last year and have really focused on it since the pandemic. I've read a lot of information that says the freeze some of your items for about 3 days before putting them in mylar bags. I froze my flour, pasta, beans, rice, and oatmeal in my deep freezer before sealing it. It helps to kill most of the bug eggs and you have to let them sit for a while to get room temp before working with them.

  • @deniswalker77

Always freeze your flour and rice at least 3-4 days then bring it to room temp prior to prepping for long term

I started my extended food pantry in August and it’s still not completely finished, it does take time. Buy only what your family eats. Dehydrating food is another good way to have long term food storage! I also put bay leafs in my 5 gallon buckets. Thanks for sharing the Mylar bags and how to seal them, I was wondering how you do that! I’m definitely gonna go and purchase that book of a year without the grocery store.

I’m watching you on RUclips right now on my TV I’m sending you a message through my phone! I have learned when I do this type of food storage that the best thing to do with your flour, your rice, your cornmeal, your oatmeal is to put it in the freezer for 2 to 3 days and let it freeze in the freezer then take it out bring it to room temperature and then store it in the buckets that’ll kill all the larva and little weevils and stuff! I always love watching your videos thank you so much!!

Really great reminder about the importance of yeast! During the 1st quarantine during spring, my country had a really low number of covid cases, we had nothing to worry about. BUT! the stores were ALL out of yeast, some were even out of flour... It was terrible, ususally, there is so many types of yeast, fresh and dry, from many companies. And for nearly 2 months, there was literally none.

A suggestion also is to wait to seal your 5 gal lids for a few days to make sure your oxygen absorbers worked. You’ll see the Mylar bag get sucked in tight if it worked. And if the absorbers fail you can try again before it’s put away for years.

    • @elenacala
      @elenacala 3 года назад +2

Oxygen absorbers don't always give you that vacuum packed look and it doesn't mean they didn't work. Oxygen absorbers remove oxygen but not air.
