Having come from a poor childhood, and many times not having food, I learned as an adult to buy extra when I could. It didn’t happen overnight. Let’s face it, food is expensive. But over a few years I was happy with what I had gathered. No big house, but learned creative ways to store the food. Most food can last a lot longer than the best by dates, especially canned food. I’ve learned to rotate and switch with the new. I have been teased in the past about storing food. But it’s an insurance like any other insurance, it’s for when the unexpected happens. Seeing my mom eat mustard when we were children, so that me and my siblings could have the little bit of real food left, burned a lasting memory in my head that will never go away. But it also taught me to prepare for the worst. Praying for everything to get back to normal and for everyone’s health. ❤️

I didn't even had a mom but was raised by my grandmother who used to eat the little end piece of the loaf of bread with coffee so that we can enjoy the rest. It's a long distance memory that I will never forget. All the good I have in me is because God put me with a person like her. God Bless

Amen sister. I was very fortunate. Never struggled for a meal, however, living in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where everything was flown or shipped in and and my mom being part Chinese, was extremely frugal and told us that everything could halt in a blink of an eye should Matson stop coming. We never at at McDonalds unless it was a very special occasion. Meals were simple and healthy since my mom was a teacher (since she finished work at 3) and had time to do so.
I’m glad I had parents and grandparents that taught me the value of a hard earned dollar and how to make it stretch.
I honestly believe those who struggle the hardest while growing (like yourself) has the best and well rounded character and gumption to thrive.
Many blessings and much Aloha to you and yours 🌴🤙🏽🌋

Wow your story touched home, we were basically raised on sandwiches and cup of noodles. I’m the oldest of 8 so I saw my mom, single mom struggle. And I’m more cautious about that with my kids and family. Thank God we’ve never gone hungry and have a little not much stored for an emergency.

I bet nobody is teasing you now! I've kept an extremely well stocked home all my married life, and that's been 47 years. Our storage has seen us through layoffs, illness, short paychecks, unexpected company, etc., but I never dreamed as an older person, it would be for sequestering ourselves for maybe two months to try to avoid this horrible virus. I already had my usual supplies, but topped off and got a few things particular to this situation, and was finished before the craziness starte.

You do realize that grocery stores have just-in-time deliveries and only stock about 3 days of food, right? It only takes a few people getting one of this and one of that to clear the store.
Shipping from Asia is way down, so items aren't always able to be resupplied soon.
Much of the world had a bad growing season last year, so there were already some shortages of foods such as rice and beans.
It is always good to have extra around for times like these.

For anyone who is not an experienced prepper and does not have long-term food storage, there are some basic things to keep in mind when estimating how much pantry food you need for X amount of days to feed your household. If you just randomly buy food, you will probably NOT have enough calories per person per day stockpiled for the number of days you want to be able to feed your household. It is not the number of servings listed on the package that is important -- it is the total number of calories in the package/can/jar of food that is important. Make sure you buy enough calories of the starches (rice, pasta, potatoes, whole grains), animal proteins, beans, veggies and fruits to make enough nourishing meals.
So first, you will need to decide how many calories per day to provide each adult and each child in your household. I buy food storage based on the goal of providing each adult 2000 calories of food per day (about 667 calories per meal). Yes, people will vary in how many calories they really need to maintain body weight, but 2000 calories is a good estimate when shopping for multiple adults and teens. Younger children need fewer calories than do adults and teens, but if you stock an adult amount of calories for each child too this makes your calculations easier and results in a bit more food than you really need for X amount of days so gives you a little reserve of food. You will also need to decide which favorite family meals you want to be able to provide on some days when not otherwise preparing very basic inexpensive meals. Favorite meals are good for morale.
Here is the simple and inexpensive way to have weeks or months of wholesome food for breakfast: stock up on enough plain rolled oats (either regular or instant) + powdered milk + inexpensive dried fruit (raisins, dried cranberries) + sweetener (cane sugar, honey...) so you can give each person a 667 calorie breakfast of oatmeal porridge fortified with powdered milk, fruit and sweetener. One or 2 Tbs. of peanut butter stirred into a piping hot serving of oatmeal will make a complete protein (legume + whole grains = complete protein) if you are feeding adults who are doing hard physical labor. Reserve the frozen breakfast burritos, frozen sausage patties, frozen Egg Beaters, canned sausage gravy, Spam, refrigerated cinnamon roll dough cylinders, etc. for making breakfast on special days.
Here is the simple way to decide on food for lunch: some kind of chunky soup or stew or chowder or chili (made with condensed soup + canned veggies + canned beans + seasonings) plus some kind of bread (sliced store bought bread from the freezer or saltines or home baked biscuits or cornbread or a side of cooked rice or pasta). Save the frozen pizzas, frozen steaks, frozen fish sticks, frozen hamburger patties, frozen French fries and tater tots, etc. for special lunches or dinners.
Here is the simple way to decide on food for dinners: two-thirds of of the calories from cooked rice (can be pre-cooked or instant mixes) or pasta (can be instant or pre-cooked) or potatoes (can be instant) and a topping made from a little canned meat (tuna, salmon, chicken, beef, pork...) some canned vegetables (green beans, corn, mixed veggies, sliced mushrooms...) and some kind of canned or instant sauce (pasta sauce, melted Velveeta, alfredo sauce, condensed soup, gravy...).

I wanna add, if you have a small freezer forget instant foods like pizza, TV dinners, etc. Buy frozen veggies, frozen fruit, perogies, fish sticks, frozen meat, etc.
Don't buy TV dinner stuff just buy stuff you can make more than 1 meal with, you don't need to spend $5- $10 on a frozen family sized lasagna. Instead buy 2 packages of frozen corn and peas or something. It will get you further.

Dont forget feminine hygeine or sexual health and medical health in general. Those are often overlooked. As well as PET FOOD if you have animals you have to stock up on as much as you can 3 month supply even because humans have choices we can eat a lot of stuff and we get supplies wherever in evacuation centres and all the rest. Here in aus suring the bushfires and floods and all the other bs we deal with its hard to remember that oh my pet has a certain limited range of food and cant just eat whatever provided and if they have special needs like meds or use training pads for the loo or kitty litter or whatever then that needs to be supplied as well. It may not jump out as survival or emergency supply but your animals need very little but what they do need is very important and not as easy to get as human necessities.

I'm a home canner and one thing I do for water storage is use the empty quart and half gallon jars, as we use the food I wash them and set aside then when I have enough to fill my pressure canner I process for 20min and it's good to go. Then you have emergency water if needed and nice clean jars for next canning season. (pour or shake to add air back in for drinking) I reuse old seals for the water(never for food) because if one does not seal you are not out anything and can use it for your plants. My grandma and mom taught me to do this when I was growing up, they used the inversion method but I prefer to process for a short time.

Freezer space is a pain - mine only has three drawers. Mostly fine for my single person household, less great for my parents (four persons household). I do wish I had more space for more frozen veggies, but I'll just have to be strategic. I've got a lot of dried foods (rice, pasta, a variety of beans, lentils). My freezer has a couple of kilos of chicken, and a drawer full of vegetables. Veggies that keep for longer I buy fresh and store in the fridge.

First of all let me just say, I started watching you....probably about 2-3 years ago and really learned from you about food storage and emergency preparedness way back when. I've been slowly but surely building my pantry up and changing my outlook on how I shop for things- stocking up when things are at their lowest price, and cycling through our stash. This has been an actual lifestyle change. To be honest for anyone reading- #1 my family has less fear when it comes to any sort of crisis, #2 we've been a little down and out due to circumstances out of our control and have been able to catch up or save by skipping a grocery run or household needs run for awhile, and #3 with the Coronavirus outbreak, my family is already set should we be quarantined. I do not need to be out buying a single thing right now as I am already prepared. So grateful and thankful! 🧡

Kimmy i have been watching you for years and you have always once in a while post about your own food room and how to reload it. Long story short i got into it because of you incase of loss of a job or hurricane, since that's very common in FL and let me tell you its been a blessing in our home. We started with a small closet loaded it up and as we got the hang of it we have expanded to a larger food storage space. THANK YOU! specially know that USA is struggling with this virus situation its been of great help for our family of 5. It also helps stop the panic a bit so if you are reading this start your own in a small closet or a space you separate but it os a great help. Xoxo Kimmy to you and family

I know this might sound dumb but I do read a lot of Zombie books and I’ve learned not to brag about what you have. In just about all the books desperate people would force their way into homes they knew were stocked. And it never ended well for the “preppers”. I have a stockpile but I have to remind my kids to never tell anyone, ANYONE what we have. NEVER. If people who know you and know where you live get to the point of desperation, it probably isn’t smart to show them your stockpile on RUclips. I’m not trying to scare.

My husband works making airplane parts and there might be a voluntary leave for 6 months since there is no work and they might be shutting his work for precautions and everyone working from home. For money purposes I go to aldi, since we don’t need a crazy amount of food it’s easier than going to Costco. Do an inventory check of your home for personal care, medication, spices, and don’t forget your pets. Plan out your meals for a few weeks and don’t forget to stock up on first aid and flashlights just in case🤷🏼‍♀️ Stay safe everyone and let’s pray this goes away soon and we can enjoy our summer🙏🏻🙏🏻 I am praying for all the mommas that are pregnant like myself because it’s hard to stay calm but your little one needs you🙏🏻 Jesus please protect us all🙏🏻

1.5 years ago, we lost power for 3 days from a huge storm. Luckily it was summer so we didn't need to stress about staying warm. But it was a wake up call to keep convenience foods/meals on hand. I normally make everything from scratch so all my stored individual ingredients didnt help me without power. Lol. I now keep a tote of quick boxed meal type foods, also home canned meats. So i can use a camp stove to quickly make a dump and go meal with good protein. I just make sure to go through my tote once or twice a year to be sure things are used before expiring and then replaced. 💗 stay well, thanks for posting this video and keeping people informed

    • @EmmaAppleBerry

Id reccommed a small portable gas stove like youd use for camping so you can cook without power OR better yet a generator but i know most people have hos bottle powered bbqs or grills and that can be used to cook and boil water without power. Im going off the assumition first that ill have power and water drinking washing myself and clothes but if i dont i want to have the food water and hygiene down since those are very important necessities. Its good to have if you can portable shelter like a tent you can carry with you in case perhaps you have to evacuate or whatever the case is for whatever emergency people forget they also conserve heat and protect you from bugs and give privacy in the case you had to go to an evac centre or for example to the beach to escape bushfires whatever it can create a private space for your family and shelter you from wind and rain and sun its just a nice reassurance you can keep it in the boot of your car use it at the beach or for picnics at the park or in the backyard for fun or in winter put it on your bed base then slide your mattress inside and help conserve heat like a canopy bed and in times when someones sick keep their germs mostly contained. In a easily cleaned easily sealed area especially if they share a bedroom or you want to avoid as much airborne spreading as possible i mean if theyre confined to bed anyway its not gonna be an issue for them to be inside a tent with all their things and that way you can easily pass through meals etc and powercords and whatever without having to fully expose yourself or them to germs. Its easy to wipe down and with a tent you can leave windows open for fresh outside air which will help the patient and help the healthy because there will be less stagnant air and germ build up cause youll have UV light from the sun killing germs without having to compromise privacy or darkness since you have a tent over the persons bed. Plus that way its more of a fun camping type experience then a scary thing normalcy is something thats important in any emergency or situation like that its brings comfort hope and maintains peace and sanity like a child with their teddy. Whereas big plastic sheets and hazmat clothing doesnt... plus its a cheap easy and useful solution for a range of issues.

One of the reasons there’s no toilet paper anywhere is because shops generally keep only a couple days in stock at a time... so as soon as a few people buy extra, the shelves empty quicker than they can restock. Which of course perpetuates the problem, because customers perceive a scarcity and buy more than they normally would. But, yeah, I do agree that it’s a good idea to keep a two-week supply of everything you absolutely need all year round!

My grocery store is always having a sale on something. Tomorrow they will be having a huge sale and I'm going to be able to get alot of stuff that I already use rather its daily or even weekly. For instant their chicken noodle soup will be 20 for $10 which is a very good bargain in my area. We eat soup, good shelf life and it is sick season to begin with. ❤

I'm not sure why people don't have food put away period. Having a stocked pantry is what our grandparents did. This was how they survived the winter. The best advice you gave was store what you eat and eat what you store. I have always bought things that are on sale and bought enough to last the year. When ketchup is on sale for $0.79 we go through 12 a year so I buy 12 of them. That way I don't have to buy him again this year and I got them all at the bottom dollar price. I'm not sure why people don't do this it's way more economical oh, but I have come to find that most of my friends don't have more than a few days of food at their house. We had a hurricane of course we had no electricity and no water, and that was difficult but I did prepare the water and alternative cooking methods and we survived with just the pantry Staples that we had on hand no problem. I think it's very nice you made this video because what I do about food storage and what you do is what most people don't do

I'm probably older than you being 56 but, at least 3 generations ago, we did not have grocery stores like we do today & they always had at least 1 yr supply of food at all times in their homes. It's sad but most of us did/do depend more on stores today than ever. If not for the Corona Virus, I always kept stocked in case of job loss, illness where we can't work for a while, earthquakes, tornado's, etc. Anything can happen at anytime.

    • @littlesquirrel5007
      @littlesquirrel5007 4 года назад +10

@@drmy91 I think right now when you're trying to buy for this particular reason it would be expensive. But stores have sales every week and when I first started preparing for the unknown I would just pick up a couple of extra items even if it's just an extra pack of pasta or an extra bag of beans or instead of buying a small bag of rice I got a larger one. It all adds up over time. I would use coupons I would take advantage of buy one get one free sales I would use store reward cards and different shopping apps that give cash back like Ibotta and there are a whole multitude to choose from ranging from uploading your receipts to there's just a whole bunch of different ones to choose from. I was just at Walmart today and I picked up an extra 12 cans of tomatoes. And they are literally under $0.50 a can. So for just a dollar you could get two cans and overtime by the end of the year you would have a very good stockpile of Basics that could get you through something like this.

I agree with the amounts of items that were suggested but there is one thing i noticed was not mentioned. As she is living in Utah her food will do great in most storage areas. When i moved from Utah to North Carolina i found that most of my shelf times on my non-canned food went way down. You need to judge your storage based on the conditions. Bread and veggies do not last as long in this humid area where in Utah they will last much longer in the much drier area.

    • @jelatinosa
      @jelatinosa 4 года назад

I live in a humid hot all year round climate, and we don't have reliable electricity. If I had all that in storage, all the dry goods would be full of bugs, produce would get mouldy in a matter of weeks. We can't rely on freezers because power is always going out, for days sometimes weeks at a time. We can only store sealed jars and canned food for any good length of time and some processed packaged foods that don't need refrigeration.

They figured that they might be able to find some (here in Canada) otherwise they thought they might come for a visit to shop the pantry. As a joke I mailed them some rolls. At one point everyone will be done stockpiling and they will have enough and no money left. This is when shelves will start to fill again :) I have done a lot of shopping in the last week. As i was planning to possibly move states by the end of the year, i had tried to keep my food pantry minimal and only get fresh things i eat for the week. This has left me needing to go out and buy so much. Not because im worried about needing to quarantine myself, but more so that i won't have the food i need when the shelves are empty! Especially with severe food allergies i only eat certain products. I agree with buying a few extra here and there is a good idea. My mother has been doing this all my life and i also stock up on things i use often when they are on sale. Space is an issue so there is only so much i can buy. I have enough to get by for a few months if i ration my food so i think i'm good. I'm only feeding myself so i don't want to buy more than what will last. Fresh things like meat and veges i am not hoarding because i believe they will always be available.

I love this video - practical, sensible, everything people really need right now. I had a few minutes when I was looking at all sorts of food to buy "just in case", before my brain came back online reminding me that if I haven't needed something in the last couple of months, I'm probably fine without it.
This panicked hoarding is creating an artificial shortage where there isn't one - the shelves are empty not because there's not more food, but because the store can't stock the shelves quickly enough. It does no one any good.
I stocked up a bit. Both my parents and I are high risk, and I basically want to just not have to go to the grocery store to buy the small packs of stuff that I usually get. It often makes sense for me to buy the smaller packages because I live in a small studio apartment on my own, but I know I'll need to minimise my exposure for the next couple of months so I really did need to make sure I have enough. But most people aren't high risk like me, or very high risk like my parents. Most people will be fine going to the grocery store every now and again. The hoarding helps no one, it just hurts the more financially vulnerable of our population. Unacceptable behaviour.

I had to sacrifice my take out dinners, my hanging out with friends expenses, to get my pantry filled up...I was amazed at how much money is wasted on these take out dinners, compulsive shopping sprees, etc....
I went to the home depot in our area...they totally sold out of FREEZERs all sizes....over 300 units sold out....have to wait 2 months for a restock , I am told.

I'm so glad I started my food storage last year. Something I do is at the end of the week, if there is something left that we didnt eat, it goes into food storage, you don't always want the same things every week, so I keep my pantry tidy and move things out before doing a new shop. Just get a few bits every week and on those weeks where you dont really need them, get them anyway and store them so your shopping costs the same every week.

All great ideas! I've been working on my food storage as well - taking inventory and filling in where needed. One thing I've been doing as well is picking up frozen veggies and throwing them on my dehydrator overnight. They dehydrate very quickly and I can store about 5 bags, depending on the veg, in a quart jar. I have a food saver with a jar lid attachment to suck out all the oxygen and they store for a long time that way. Thanks for sharing! It never hurts to be prepared!

I feel so blessed that l was paying attention when l saw the virus in China and took action right away and from this day forward l will stay on top of my supplies and not take anything for granted.

I am here in Colorado and before I even realized that people were panicking I wanted to pick up some toilet paper. I was at Costco and they were completely out. My niece, her husband, my parents and my son are all coming here. I thought oh man well I will try again tomorrow. I tried again the next day and they said the truck came and it was gone within minutes. I have 14 rolls left but with all these people coming lol. I teased the cashier and said well I guess we will have to use leaves from the yard for now. lolol. Like you said don't panic but I think it is too late for that. I have a great co-worker who happen to be at Costco just in time and grabbed a pack of TP for me. I am grateful for her for that. I don't know and hate to imagine how it would be if there were a real crisis. God is good and its great to be prepared but don't be greedy. How much toilet paper do you really need. People I guess were buying 4 packs at a time, Costco had to put a limit. Ugh It will be ok. God bless and thanks for the video it is very helpful. Looking forward to the one about water. :)

This video was so helpful! Thank you! I have never been one to have much on hand. I usually shopped week to week just because doing more overwhelmed my brain lol. Recently, though, I really felt like it was time to start thinking a little farther ahead and keeping more on hand. We joined Sam's Club and have been gradually adding things to our storage. We also bought a chest freezer so that is beginning to fill as well. It is a huge peace of mind to know if something comes up, and we can't leave for a few weeks, my kids will still have their tummies full ❤️ Saturday morning my son woke up with a horrible stomach bug and I was mad dashing to the store for toilet paper, Lysol wipes and otc fever reducers. It was a good reminder of why I am now working to keep more on hand lol! I was so anxious for you to do a video like this, and, as always, you did not disappoint!

I agree that people have gone insane but don't go to the big box stores. Every grocery store, pharmacy, and small store in our area has tons of toilet paper sanitizer has been harder to get. Personally I bought four of the big sanitizers early on because I knew the people would go bananas. I gave one to my parents and one to my ex-husband. I kept two for myself because we already have the small little ones that are in each of the bathrooms so we have plenty. But people are putting 8 10 12 of them in their carts and then leaving none of them for others. That's not stocking up that's hoarding and it's also being very selfish. Everybody wants to prepare for their family.
