I bought both at the same time, received same package. For me personally, early impressions, the civivi is easier in every way to use. Flipper is easier to open, although the thumb stud on the olight is not hard by any means. I can just do the civivi with no thought, the olight takes slightly more positioning and thought. Closing is a bigger difference. For me, the olight is too short. It should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer for the axis lock to be 'easy.' The button on the civivi is significantly easier.

I like how Civivi does their button locks, so if the aluminum scales are similar to their other models (like the ones on the Qubit) then this looks great for the price. The mounting mechanism is cool because it probably prevents blade rattle/shifting and allows exposure of (almost) the entire cutting edge of the blade.
I'll pass on this one because I prefer toolless retention mechanisms and more cutting path free of the mounting frame. If I'm being really picky, I also prefer when the blade is entirely housed within the handle scales. Not just for aesthetic reasons, but because the carbon steel used in disposable utility blades is particularly prone to rusting if sweat makes it through your pocket. (Ask me how I know.)
I'm going to stick with my Big Idea Design Ti Utility, especially after I finally broke in the detent track so the action is super smooth. But I'll definitely recommend this Civivi to friends who want something more interesting than a Milwaukee Fastback, but don't want to shell out for a Tirant Razor V3 or a Reate EXO-U.

  • @BrandonRead-tf1un

If only it came with a quick blade changer. Needing a separate tool to change the blade makes this knife a big pass. My Milwaukee utility knife has a button lock just like this , but with a quick blade change button , and sold for $10 at Ace Hardware.

I use my Exceed Designs TIrant razor for nearly every cutting utility except for food, which is what I use whatever other pocket knife I carry for. (CJRB Crag usually) The TIrant is so perfect in feel and utility that I guess I won't buy this Civivi, though it is still tempting. I do like the large usable edge. Of course, even though the TiRant has less cutting edge usable, it actually has more plungeable blade free of the holder than the Civivi and it has a toolless blade change. The TiRant also has a very satisfying deployment, but has a frame lock and not a button lock, which is the only point where Civivi beats Exceed's TiRant.

If you work in a blue collar job, you already know why utility knives are so much more useful than regular knives. If I need to cut a new piece of conveyor belt to replace on a machine and my knife is too dull, I don't have time to sit there and sharpen it. Just slap a fresh blade on and get to work

This isn't to replace a utility knife. It's for light duty EDC where you don't want to worry about messing up or sharpening a nice pocket knife, or to use instead of a traditional pocket knife altogether.

Gideons tactical did a review of this…..honestly it did really bad in his testing. The blade came loose multiple times and basically wen’t flying. It’s not a quick exchange either. I think the EXO-U is probably going to be a much better option where legal

I mentioned the lack of a quick exchange feature but mine held up fine. No issues during use

@@metal_complexyessir. I sometimes get ahead of myself and comment during the video 😂. As always i appreciate the review and enjoy the content. YOU got me into knives and I’m very thankful for that……though my wife isin’t!

I've had my elemental utility for a couple weeks now, the t8 screw holding the blade on does come loose after a while. I guarantee you if you open and close the knife like a hundred times it'll come flying out eventually, probably my only negative

These are great if you happen to go to the airport and forget you have a knife on you. Just ditch the blade and buy a new one when you land.

So, let's get this straight: A knife that requires you to carry a bit and driver - an overblown problem that you won't really ever encounter. An extra 2mm of clip that's a bill - OMGTHEWORSTTHINGEVER YAAA YAAA OOOGA BOOGA HATEHATEHATE! /coniption fit Do I have that right?
