How to remove and clean Macbook Pro keyboard keys

  • (EXPAND FOR MORE DETAILS) This video is long: I wanted to show the entire process up close. It goes through each type of key, including the mechanism on the insides of those keys. (I didn't do the Shift key, but that's because I had previously found that it was extremely similar to Cmd, albeit a little wider. Check out the Cmd and Space keys and you should understand what you're doing with it.)
This is a Macbook Pro with Retina from 2012. The key mechanisms across models sometimes vary a little, but the idea is typically the same, with two interlocking white pieces that fold together.
If you have a Macbook Pro from the 2010 era, it looks like the white plastic insides will attach with their pegs on the left instead of the bottom. The 2012's two metal catches on the top (see around 3:24 of the video) are instead a 2010's single wide catch on the right. If you have such a model, you should easily see what I mean. I used a toothpick in my video to knock the white pegs out of their catches, but in a 2010's keyboard, you can't do it quite that way. Instead, you should squeeze the left side of the white plastic to compress it enough to allow you to duck the pegs out of their holes. Concerning the disassembly of the two white interlocking pieces: the pegs will fit together slightly differently, but many of the important facts are the same: flat smooth surfaces face upward, bumped and textured surfaces face down; there's only one correct way for the two white pieces to connect and still be able to lay flat; they will hinge at the center, and all peg-like shapes should be on the left; the inner white plastic piece should hinge such that it raises up (as opposed to down) when it's oriented correctly. To get the plastic hooked back into the keyboard frame: Hook the key into the metal catch on the right-hand side first, and then you'll have to struggle to get the left-hand side's pegs into their holes. I seemed to have my best luck with doing the right-hand catch, then the bottom peg, then the top peg.
I spilled copious amounts of root beer onto my Macbook Pro Retina keyboard, and after salvaging the internal hardware itself, I documented my attempt to clean the keys, which stuck extremely hard after 2 days had passed. I thought this would be a beneficial video for others to see.
Things to note, not explicitly covered in the video:
    • You can probably have some luck pulling the main keys off FROM THE BOTTOM first, but alternatively, many people suggest doing it as I did in the video, from the top left.
    • The TAB, CAPSLOCK, and SHIFT keys have metal bars in them, like CMD and SPACE, but while CMD and SPACE have two bars, the others have only one, which should rest on the bottom half of the key's area.
    • CAPSLOCK has a light in it, but don't be afraid about breaking it if you pull the key off. It works exactly like the others of its approximate size. The light is a little tiny volcano shape with black molding around it for protection.
    • I haven't pulled out the RETURN/ENTER key, but I did pry it up a little to try to tell what kind of mechanism it is. It looked to me to be exactly like the TAB key, with a metal bar along the bottom and a wide plastic hinge.
Thanks for watching as I clean up my mess. Best of luck to you.
Some extra notes, several months after the video upload:
If you have liquid damage on your laptop, even if it ends up still working (like mine), your warranty will be voided, regardless of any Apple Care policy you may have purchased. If the laptop truly is lost to the damage, your best option (short of outright buying a new computer) is to take it to an Apple Store where they can offer to basically refurbish it and send it back to you. They basically rip open the computer and replace the internal parts, such as the entire motherboard. Especially with the MBP Retina, where all the pieces are not individually serviceable, this means they'll replaced everything.
For my 15" MBP Retina, the cost was approximately $1100. You'll have to decide if its worth it. You shouldn't consider the option unless the computer just flat out doesn't work or is unusable. The Apple employees themselves won't encourage you to use this service unless it's really your only option. If you do need to have the computer stripped and replaced, it should come back like a new machine.

I haven't seen anyone mention this, but this works almost exactly for the surface book laptop as well. Thank you so much!

As a retired surgeon, let me just say that this is a top notch, precise video. My ALT OPT key came off (with vacuuming OMG), and I did find that I needed to separate the face from the underlying attachment-base to get this appropriately aligned for re-insertion.....as a result of my previous mashing to put the key on, I had bent the little alignment-attachment spikes and had to straighten them out, which took some effort to re-align properly, but thereafter the process was just as described in about the 11:00 minute portion of the video. Strong work!

I watched this because I spilled syrup on my space bar so it was sticky. I got the key to come off and I cleaned it although when I put it back on it is a little more raised up than the other keys but it is staying on and isn't sticking anymore. As long as it works and isn't sticky anymore I don't really care.

Thanks for posting this video. My vice principal's MacBook Air's spacebar was messed up because he spilled some kind of soda into his keyboard. There were no other videos or instructional materials on how to pop keys off the keyboard of a Mac laptop, but yours provided a "cautionary" step and a look underneath the keyboard. I was successfully able to clean the white scissor-like mechanism which got stuck up because of the goo from his soda.

Maybe the Root Beer entering the system confused the software and saw it as another Root User. The way to remedy that would be to pour a freshly opened can of Sudo Pop into the keyboard and then give the laptop a good shake to allow all the Bytes to fall back into their respective holes. Also, the RAM may have drowned. ;o)

For visitors in 2021 and after, the trackpad is now available on eBay. Make sure you have the two special screwdrivers to get into the back of the Mac. They are not normal screws. The special screwdrivers are also available on eBay. The screwdrivers on eBay with the red transparent plastic handles have very strong heads, which is a good thing. When replacing the screws, don't over-tighten

This is a very clear and functional explanation. I spilled a cup of coffee with sugar on my Keyboard and after "CAREFULLY" following this video instructions, my Enter, Backspace and Right-Shift keys are working perfectly well.
Yes, there is a risk of getting a broken key or one of the internal pieces. However, the alternative is to pay a few hundred pounds to get it cleaned at a Service Centre. I took the risk of doing it myself and everything went right. If something might have broken, I know I can get the spare parts at the service centre, anyway.
    Good luck!

Oh my gosh, thank you for making this video!! I spilt some soda on my MacBook Pro back in late 2014 during my freshman year of college and my tab button was very slow and took effort to push it to make it work all these years. Now, after 4 years and watching this video spending the last 15-20 minutes doing that at 1am, my tab button is finally back to normal!!! I can't help but push it now because of how smoothly it works again lol. Thanks again! Btw, for the stickiness on the flat surface after the keyboard was removed on the lights part, I used a little wet q-tip and it seemed to do the job. And on the tab button, I also washed the bar on the black piece and it seemed to be a good portion of the problem for some of the soda got in that tiny spot (FYI for those who are having "tab button" problems).

Awesome video, I really want to thank from he bottom of my heart. Last night, a cup of very hot milk tea has been fallen on my Mac book pro 2016 keyboard (latest), and the tea was pretty sweet as I added a plenty of sugar. I tried my best to soak up all the liquid with the tissue paper after switched it off and disconnecting all other connections with it and then kept in a Rice Bag for the whole night as well to dry it properly. In the morning, when I took my Mac out of the Rice bag, then all those keys which were in direct contact of rice, were jammed (more than half of the keyboard) and the other keys which were not in contact with rice were still working and pushed properly. Watching this video, I could really get the confidence (though it was horrible for me to try it by myself) to open all of those keys and cleaned the sticky tea under the key cover which really made the keys jammed. Now, the two things I am not able to fix that ---key of the letter 'w' is not properly fixed as, it's a bit uplifted by left bottom corner. Other thing is that my screen is also damaged somehow from left corner entered the liquid inside the screen. Although the liquid was not touched there while falling, but may be while trying soaking up the liquid it might have entered into the screen. Any suggestions please except to visit to the apple store? Macbook is still in gurantee period but they say they dont cover any liquid damage.

Excellent tutorial. My space bar was stuck from a little bit of coffee that sprayed over it and following your instructions I was successful in removing it and cleaning it without breaking it. It was a bit challenging on reassembling the delicate parts since I didn't know which part was the top or bottom of the space bar and another issue was the architecture on the newer mac book pro has changed a bit, so when putting on the plastic piece that goes inside the keyboard it has a small little trick to get it snap into place and be flush when putting the space bar back on, but with lots of patience I managed to do it. Very helpful when you went more into detail on the space bar. Thank you for this video, it was a life saver. No need to go to the Apple store to get it fixed, although I'm seriously thinking about purchasing a keyboard protector.

I tore off the cardboard top from cigarette paper, very thin cardboard: then slid the cardboard corner under my space bar and drew it gently around and under the space bar. This did the trick.
I then cut slices/pieces from the thin cardboard and worked them around all my keys. Finally I vacuumed my keyboard, holding the hose end slightly above the keys, pressing one at a time down (a few times). It takes patience.
This is a great vid to have on hand should I ever spill liquid on my kb.
Again, thanks for the excellent presentation, Tim.
This is not a performance for anyone in a hurry. You can get your keyboard professionally cleaned.
    Namaste and care,
    mhikl

I spilled a red daiquiri all over my keyboard and it was so sticky! I thought I was going to have to buy a brand new one but this video totally saved me an extra $1,500 or spending a few hundreds for professionals to do it! Thank you so much!

My CMD key is back from the dead!
The mechanism under my CMD key is actually a little different from the one shown on the video (only one metal bar), but nevertheless this video was exactly what I needed. It really helped to understand what was under the hood and see the process done
The best part - was when Tim said "It feels *really* *really* horrible to pull it, but you just have to do it". It gave me the confidence to do something necessary I would never have dared on my own (and please don't quote me out of context)
    Thanks!

Thank you very much for this video and the shift key video! My Macbook Pro has been gathering dust and the occasional crumb under my keys for a couple years now, and I felt like doing a deeper cleaning. Surprisingly, I found 8+ strands of dog hair underneath each key as well! I couldn't have cleaned my keyboard nearly as easily without the help of this video. Thanks again!

Hey! I googled forever to find even an image of the back of the command key because I couldn't figure how to reinstall it--Your video showed me the reason I was confused is because both of the tiny posts had torn off and the white pieces no longer snapped together. Thank you for this video it helped so much!

Thank you for that nitty gritty part of how the plastic insides must go!! I needed it. I am really bad at this and I dropped something heavy enough to pop a key off the open macbook pro. The white plastic setup inside was not clear on any other video. This is so specific. I can't believe I did it! Hurray for me but only because the video is so great. I
was really nervous and thought I would have a dysfunctional key!!

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and I followed your advice - and got the key top off - but then saw that the details of the key mounting were different ! However, there were enough clues in this video to enable me to fix my T key without breaking anything. Many thanks. I found stuff under the key, no stickiness, but, the cantilever came away with the keytop.

Fabulous instructions very clear language to follow how to clean every key. As I saw so many comments I notice that a lot of us commit the same mistake of letting a cup of anything near your laptop. In school they taught me to never have any liquids near you P.C.NEVER! I filled English Tea on mine so my space bar won't work properly. I will try to fix it following your instructions. Thanks

    Hi Tim,
Thank you for the video. It was an excellent starting point. I found that starting at the bottom and slightly lifting the key with a razor blade then using a pick to get between the key cap and the hinge on the bottom of the key a prying them apart then slide the key down slightly to release the top catches. This is the way to avoid damaging the hinge. The metal retainers can be released by starting on the sides where they meet the metal frame then with the pick and working around the bottom to release the clips on the metal springs. Then the process is the same as above. The picks I used were purchased at harbor freight for a couple dollars. The pick I liked was the hook.

Just a quick thanks for having documented/done this. I just replaced several keys, using the (only) merchant's 1-min video as reference, but yours as the practical guide.
Rather than risk breaking a delicate hinge tab using a screwdriver to "tuck in the bottom tabs" after hooking the top, I did what you said, and voila. Push, snap, done. Super easy, even for me who is by no means a techie when it comes to dissembling laptops. Thanks again. I really searched before beginning the process, and had lots of time to watch your vid being in "shelter in place" times. Now I'm sheltered with a new set of keys, which was greatly assisted by your demo. Stay safe and connected. (And don't spill root beer on your keyboard!)

Thank you, especially for doing the command key which is what was getting sluggish! There was a small dab of something sticky on the wire closest to the keypad. Can't figure how it got there, but it was the problem. You saved me a 60 mile drive to Apple and who knows how long of a wait!
