I love how this scene perfectly captures the descent into madness and giving into obsession.
By the way, those poor bandaids
It’s only madness until you’re successful. Afterward it’s “what a genius” and “how great”
I can see why sound and film editing was won, that constant increasing noise in the background was brilliant!!
Should've won best picture too.
@@jadchahhal1748 Yup. Academy didn't have the balls to give it to a movie with low grossing.
I hit my finger on a cymbal once so, I've pretty much been there already
I’ve cut my knuckle on a snare rim, so also bled while playing
I ruined a school purchased tambourine because I cut my hand while marching and didn't notice until after the performance
How the hell was this scene about a guy playing drums so intense?! Man this film is amazing
Charles Ferdinand nice b8 buddy
Charles Ferdinand Spot the shy irl, 15 year old internet rebel lmao. Reaching unknown levels of cringe. Bet you only watch foreign indies you child..
Charles Ferdinand The Internet rebel strikes again lol. "His real name's Clarence"
Charles Ferdinand bro u good
Charles Ferdinand you just copy and past this comment around to all people who support the move I mate. Relax a bit.
If it bleeds, we can kill it.
Don’t squeeze me ;-;
Probably Fletcher's motivations
Predator reference
As a drummer, I can tell you that bleeding hands happens so much more often than you think, to the point where I can barely feel even the deepest cuts anymore.
I am a drummer myself and actually asked a lot of drummers who have been playing for years and none has experienced cut before and you’re not only the first one to say it happened but also says it happens often which make finds it impressive how much you practice. Seriously tho take a rest dude
@@09-caokhanhduy89 well we're also talking about Buddy Rich levels of drumming. So yea bleedy hands are probably normal in that context.
Been playing for 11 years now, never had bleeding hands mate.
If you bleed, you're holding the sticks wrong. Just like most of the guitarists who have tendinitis, they're simply pressing too hard and should be using lighter strings if it starts hurting.
If you’re not bleeding, you’re clearly not cut to be one of the greats 🤷♂️
A a classically trained musician who would be at the piano for up to 8 hrs a day, i can tell you that this emotion and drive and pain is VERY accurate. I teared up watching this scene. People will say "its just music". NO! IT IS YOUR LIFES WORK!.
I saw myself in this performance. Obviously you never see yourself per se but it gave me a great admiration for my dedication. Being a great musician is truly an art and HARD WORK
From what I've read, people in these music schools practice around 5 hours a day. You have to wonder how much he is doing.
5 hours is nothing….
@@glenngouldschair390 it is when you have to attend classes, do homework and study.
@@theguywhoisaustralian1465 Ling Ling practices 40 hours a day, OK?
@@glenngouldschair390 Jack Hanma moment.
Here's why I love this scene. It does an amazing job of showing how passion can turn into obsession. We start by seeing Andrew make copies of the sheet music for Whiplash and practicing it, which makes sense because Fletcher told him to "start practicing harder" in the previous scene. But then, we see him move his bed and alarm clock, along with some other stuff like his clothes, toothbrush, and I think a towel into his practice room, implying that he practically lives in there now, doing nothing but listening to Buddy Rich CDs and practicing. Then, we see him go so far, his hands form blisters that require multiple bandaids since they bleed a lot. Lastly, as a drummer myself who took drum lessons for eight and a half years at my local Bach 2 Rock, the entire movie, and this scene in particular, makes me really glad that I only play drums as a hobby. I don’t think I could ever be comfortable with playing drums in a band-type environment. And I definitely could not deal with playing drums for hours at a time since I only play for 30 minutes to an hour when I practice.
I love the way Chazelle times when to cut - it elevates the tension really subtly
Back when I was in 10th grade, I was in the wrestling class. I was only approximately 120 Ibs at the time and underweight. One day early in the season, my collarbone and ribcage became misaligned. My arms horizontal movement became restricted due to the pain. I asked everyone; my coach, my teachers, my parents to help me see a Chiropractor. No one took me seriously. Because of this injury which I was forced to wrestle with or fail the class, I never won a single match. I felt absolutely devastated.
I refuse to see this movie because I am afraid of reliving my own trauma. It’s because of this trauma I fail to understand how so many people including Chris Stuckmann can praise a work like this, and because I fail to understand I feel weak, incompetent, and outcast. Sometimes I feel like all the critics are begging me to see it else I’m missing out on something great; the performance of a lifetime. Is it okay to feel deathly afraid of a film such as this?
I'm not a drummer, but I've seen the movie before.
The end of it may be a trigger in your case.
Watch out, dude. But the movie is excellent, btw
My sympathies, man.
Dude, just watch it. It’s a good flick.
It's a movie don't overthink it bredda
Guess you weren’t the next Charlie Parker
definitely the best part about this whole montage is the transition to the next scene with Nicole looking like she's gonna puke
Yes! That transition is next level.
As a drummer, this scene is hilarious. Just seeing him look like he’s going to kill that ride cymbal while mercilessly beating it with terrible technique just makes me wonder how hilarious it must have been on set.
@@user-hx2zv9dw3i they could have took the concept of him practicing to oblivion and made it about some polyrhythm or time signature rather than speed which can actually relate to musicians
@@birddoesnottalk1032 but no one cared or ever will about that, only freaking band bitches will,no one but you musicians will understand that,it’s a fucking movie who gives a flying fuck whether it’s relatable or not
Dang dude, you are like totally the coolest
@@benmorgan8890 4 years later and that's still true.
0:47 looks like Rocky there. Probably not a coincidence
People say that this movie had a bad ending, HOW?! This kid wanted his dream so badly he practiced until he bleed, walked away from a car crash, all to achieve his dream wrather than listen to his family telling him to not do that
because the villain won, fletcher. he got the perfect drummer he wanted, and now neiman is stuck in a spiral of obsession.
What is the problem with that? Thats the life he chose
@@reguloluna5629the problem is that it’s a horrible decision.
@@rtheawesomegm And? The 'villain' lead him to greatness and the fulfilling of his ambitions. That's hardly evil imo. Neiman became a success rather than some forgettable background character like his dad.

He ought to wipe the excess blood off before putting another plaster, otherwise he's gonna get blood all over his drum sticks.
I don't play drums, I play trombone, but when you hit you finger on the cymbal, that shit hurts.
Can your hands really bleed from overplaying the drums?
Edgar Gonzalez if you have piss poor technique yes
Brayden Pace the wood is constantly rubbing on his skin. At that point it blisters. You keep going? You draw blood.
Probably you do it faster then it bleeds or the set breaks
Only if you have .5 star quality technique like he does here and like how other commenters before me have said. Also, it's not easy to start bleeding. I dont think I ever have, but accidents can happen so knock on wood.
Yes
This scene gives me chills… all the greatest people we can think of were this obsessed with their craft. It’s awe-inspiring
It's like the shiver method in button mashing for 4 minutes
I never understood the whole bleeding hands thing, as a drummer that's never happened to me, I've only ever gotten a blister once
Maybe he practiced way too hard
I'm a pianist and I can tell you that my fingers start twitching after a good 4-7 hours of practicing.
imagine if you continue to practice hours after you had that blister
its happened to me a lot (bleeding calluses), as a drummer, but only after really long practice sessions.
It confuses me to, I've only gotten mild cramps and one time a minor cut because my grip was so tight that my fingernails poked part of my hand.
Love how this scene suggests that practicing music is just going really fast for as long as possible until you're covered in blood and sweat. I guess the five hour montage where he was slowly and methodically practicing basic rudiments got cut?
You’re not understanding the point. It’s a movie. It doesn’t have time to show him practicing 5 hours a day. The movie is trying to demonstrate his commitment and drive to become what he wants to become, that being the best jazz drummer in history.
Bleed for this
Dad: *”Shit!! Our medical bills are gonna be through the roof!”*
Well maybe if he was holding his sticks correctly that huge blister wouldn't be created.
I think he’s holding it correctly, but I think it depends on the wood of the sticks.
ZFighter XYZ also he was practicing for hours
I've got blister on my fingers
So glad we’re identifying Napalm Death as jazz now.
When my hands won't move fast enough against title defense mr sandman
Neiman to himself: Were you rushing or were you dragging……..?
I don’t know who made the edit, but I swear somebody had layered this over footage of them practicing fighting video game combos and I related so fucking hard to that.
I wish I could still practice my drums, unfortunately I don’t have any room for them :(
We all like to pretend we can play drums
It is DRAGGING! *throws the chair to his head
Neimen first puts some blood on his drum sticks to get ready for war
Mr Fantastic
where is james, kirk lars and jason?
Being an obsessed gamer and punching your hands and punching a wall because your hands and fingers won't move fast enough and your dexterity isn't where you want it to be
It's fucking perfect
0:23 - who’s the drummer in the photo?
Buddy Rich
That music is not that hard from the sheet music to what he's playing.
Blast beats
why is he practicing blastbeat?
Maybe because you’re hit on the symbols or on the snare drum
Still not quite my tempo
Sounded good to me
Not my tempo
This is hilarious! Never seen a drummer that bleed his hands by excessive practice haha!!
Not sure what blasting has to do with jazz, but a pretty solid flick nonetheless.
Exactly like bro is not 3 Black Hearts of Damnation and Impurity 😭
Discipline is the key to success
These guys really hate metronomes huh
This scene just makes zero sense. He is extremely tense while practicing and just trying to go as fast as possible, the complete opposite of what practice should be. And if you’re cutting yourself while drumming, you really need to work on technique. I’ve never once injured myself in any way while drumming. It’s more like a meditative practice than anything
Honestly, i believe you just described why the scene actually *makes sense*.
Neiman has given into his obsession into such a level that he no longer cares for technique and logic. He isn't fueled by passion or curiosity, but anger and stress, and when that becomes your main motivator you simply don't care about *how* your goal is accomplished. How many times have you said things during a heated argument that you really didn't mean, only to realize what happened once you've calmed down?
Neiman *never* calms down and gets a chance to think about anything, and i think this scene shows the progression of his recklessness in a very realistic and capturing way, like for example when he keeps on applying bandaids instead of letting it heal or even cleaning the wound. I don't know much about music theory or practice at all to be honest, so i'm not gonna say too much of that, but as i said: Anger blinds you.
@@stinkygaming6959 "I don't know much about music theory or practice at all to be honest". Nor do most people who watch the film, which is why it works for them.
Really, I don’t think this scene is about good drumming more than it is about obsession

As a drummer, this makes me feel unbelievably lazy.

Not my fucking tempo
Loved the film and I get what they're going for here - obsession, suffering, pushing through etc. But fast drum rhythm is a result of technique, not effort. Stick balance, rebound, grip etc, you're not lifting weights. Practice for technique and speed will come.
American Dad brought me here
Human rights and correct teaching methods is good'n all but... if your not satisfied with the paycheck they give you at McDonald's, i suggests you take a beating in the face and start showing improvements in your life
Extremely unrealistic
Max Nguyen let’s see you do better..
Julian Salerno it’s not unrealistic though, it’s a friction burn
It’s a film what do you think?
That’s the whole point. It was never supposed to be realistic. It’s over-dramatized. The film would be boring otherwise.
Julian Salerno Umm, you do know that what you said was completely opinionated? It’s ignorant to say no one practices for such long hours. I know a buddy of mine, who has practiced for 6 hours straight, yes he didn’t get any friction burns but it’s ignorant to say NO ONE WOULD EVER GET IT.
Julian Salerno Dude, there’s no reason to get pissed over a RUclips comment. I mean it’s rather sad how you’re going to such lengths to prove a point that’s wrong. It’s not impossible, it’s improbable. An example of impossible is you having more than 5 brain cells. You could have practiced for 7 hours, you probably took breaks in between, or didn’t practice as hard as you could or should. Don’t just say it’s impossible, you’re ignorance is annoying as hell.
