He was good but I don't get this logic. It seems unlikely they were perfectly equal. Does he deserve as much praise because they were on the screen together? I don't get it. the defining feature of this movie is J.K's notorious performance.
I still remember my 6th grade band teacher, Mr. Morris. He wanted to be something big, and thought he was even bigger than that. The band class was even on the news. I came from another school where we didn't even know how to sight read to a school that already knew their scales. I was in sixth grade and he singled me out, made fun of me in front of the entire band to laugh along with the cool kids, and made me cry in his office. Afterwards he told me to "compose myself." He wasn't physically abusive, but he was just about as mean as this teacher is, and keep in mind I was in SIXTH grade. It got to the point that the vice principal of the school called my Mom and told her that I should take something else besides band. I liked music, so I went with Choir. I loved it! Went to competitions, stayed with it when we moved again a couple years later. Got a 2 at State (only because my best friend sang the same song to the same judge just before me. She even said she would've given me a 1 otherwise.) Went to jr college for music so I could learn to sight read, learned piano level 2, became professionally trained in singing there. I still remember that horrible, miserable teacher and how much he broke my spirit. But in the end, it all worked out! ...I'm a janitor now, haven't sang in years.
This is all about power. He wants to break him by pushing to do the impossible just to feel big and in control. It's a message to the others as well. He is willing to trash him to get that feeling.

I genuinely never knew this movie existed but after watching this clip, i need to watch it ASAP. J. K. Simmons' performance was insane in just these 5 minutes alone.
What's not shown right before this is that Fletcher only knows all of that personal information about Andrew because he acted nice and comforting to draw it out of him.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece! The intensity is so great. Also, “dragging just by a hair”, is the most band this I ever heard. My band teacher used to say that all the time. 😂😂
@@yaraduardo1287 Which is kinda dumb (coming from a former band kid) because if you are talented and hard working you'll make it anywhere. You think Marsalis or Miles Davis would need this dude? At a certain point you've gotta bet on yourself, because the conditions that the conductor puts here makes you worse and destroys your own internal passion for the music
@sulemanqamar3068 yeah, but a lot of people don't realise it, and are just glad to be part of something great and stable. That's the worst part of abuse, that you have a chance to leave - but you don't want in the moment. You see no other, better alternative then to suffer and hope that it gets better for you.
They portray people in a position of authority so well with this, the way he's so approachable and kind when andrew was telling him about his family just to use it against him and scream it in his face when the pressures surrounding him. It's shockingly well portrayed
Apart from the physical abuse, this type of leadership is very common in elite ensembles and sports. Power mad teachers and coaches. But even in certain circles like gymnastics there has been the physical abuse that goes on for years. The movie probably would be a more effective question if the physical abuse was taken out, because a whole of people would agree with the idea of 'breaking ' someone mentally so they could be built up to achieve greatness.
As someone who programs complicated drum machines as a hobby, I know the frustration of getting the microtiming right. But singling out one person after two beats just seems mean. Put a metronome in his ear or something.
Real leaders don’t have to break people down like this. They might be firm and challenging, but they spend more time building you up and inspiring you to do better than they do trying to tear you down. It’s weak people who treat their subordinates this way. Strong people have more effective tools.
@@tommym321and also, the movie does not deal with consequences of this kind of irresponsible behavior on a young person, all that absolutely senseless suffering will have to be managed in relating to oneself and the others. @@lundijuno106 It's a movie! Of course this kind of behavior in an educational setting is unacceptable. But by staying focused on that you miss the subject of the movie. Obsessive ambition, perfectionism, how far is a person willing to go to achieve their ambitions and overcome their limits? All of this is explored in the movie. The student clearly has the ambition to become the best drummer of his generation, and the teacher embodies the idea that pressure and pain can be tools to reveal artistic genius, these two states of mind will collude to create a destructive dynamic between the master and the student. It is a movie that is deliberately ambiguous in its morality, and the questions asked are not answered explicitly, it is up to the viewer to form their own opinion on the question "do we have to destroy ourselves to achieve greatness?"
