He’s exactly what a children’s cautionary tale is. He isn’t going after Puss to be a villain who wants to kill the good guy, he’s going after puss because Puss can’t seem to grasp onto the value of his own life, his last life. Which is exactly what’s the core value of scary nursery rhymes or stories. There’s stories that parents teach their children in order to prevent wrongdoings, such as not staying out late alone or to not poke a bear with a stick (which is also a joke in the movie, hehe). In a sense, he’s like saw where he demands Puss to appreciate life more.

The cool thing about Death is that he OOZES intimidation. Every time he's on screen the atmosphere immediately changes to a dark and ominous tone. Another thing I love about him is that since he's the very embodiment of Death; in the end he will always win. Doesn't matter who you are and what you've done, Death will always win. Which is why you never see him worried, or in a hurry. In my opinion it makes this character one of if not THE coolest villain DreamWorks has ever made.

Though Death doesn’t agree with the idea of cats having 9 lives, that wasn’t why he pursued Puss personally. He pursued him because of the way he was disrespected, disrespected by how casually and carelessly Puss threw away each of his lives before the ninth, by the way he continued on as if Death could not touch him. He pursued Puss specifically to remind him that Death comes for everyone and that *everyone* very much included him.

The thing is, Death isn't a villain in the traditional sense- merely an antagonist towards Puss.
Death itself is unbiased, and the great equalizer. Everyone dies. Nobody is greater or lesser than anyone else in death.
Death used here was simply a lesson- value the life that you have. Once that lesson was learned, Death was no longer something to be afraid of or something to fight.
You accept that Death will claim you in the end, so you make the Life you have now worth living.

He reasoned since he had wasted his other 8 lives, he would just "cheat" and take this was now anyway since she would probably waste this life too. That's why the puss life with the playing cards is about to say "hey thats cheating!" before death cuts him off early. Death wasn't just doing his job or being unbiased, this was personal, he was definitely acting like a villain here, it was all for his own satisfaction of ending the legend of puss early himself. When he realizes puss as the legend is already dead, he loses interest in puss. He didn't care about teaching him a lesson or respect. It was a selfish desire for death

Death has been disrespected and mocked by Puss in Boots for so long. Even into his last life, Puss is in denial and continues laughing at Death. With that in mind, it's easy to see that Death was *angry* at Puss. Death is a force to be respected, because with that also comes value for life. Puss has thrown 8 of them away now. Death *wanted* to claim Puss' last life; it was no bluff or scheme.
In the end, he is pleased, but disappointed that Puss has genuinely learned his lesson. He curses himself in spanish for "playing with his food", and thus giving Puss the time to learn his lesson. He knows that he will eventually have Puss regardless, but the part of him still smarting from the 8 lives of disrespect is frustrated, less with the fact that Puss has learned to value his last life, and more with the fact that Death finds himself proud of Puss for learning his lesson, and respecting him for it. And thus he feels obligated to let Puss go - for now... to live his life, and catch up with him another day. Perhaps on that day, not unlike the one brother from the story in Harry Potter, he will greet Death as an old friend.

Love how we're introduced to Death with a whistle, we have no idea who he is or that he's a threat similar to Puss not knowing he's staring in the face of Death until he draws blood. Then the whistle turns darker, we know what it means and we're scared because we feel Puss' fear, we are anticipating another encounter, looking over our shoulders with anxiousness and when we see Death it's chilling. But then the ending where he's leaving with a whistle, it's lighter, less threatening almost pleasant like when he's first introduced. Now the whistle holds understanding just like Puss understands he isn't immortal and that life is precious, he also understands and accepts Death, and Death leaves as an equal and not his enemy/tormentor.
Also I just noticed but at 2:37 we see Puss's eyes reflected in Death's sickles because he fights not knowing who Death is but he's afraid because he's being bested in combat. But at 2:38 we see Death's eyes reflected in his sickles showing that Puss must overcome his fear but also understands that he is facing death itself. It's a subtle but nice touch in his development throughout the movie. Just like when Death stares at Puss's eyes but no longer sees arrogance and ignorance in them

What I like here is that the lesson is not, you should accept death, or you should fear it, but what makes death important and scary is the same thing, the live you live and fighting for it in the face of death is what is really important.
Death will at one point win but fighting it until you lose is important, because the live you live is always worth it.

This whole movie was Puss's redemption. From the narrative's perspective, Death serves as a catalyst for Puss's change of heart. In the end, he truly became a fearless hero and a legend, battling with Death himself.

I think we can all agree, that death isn’t the bad guy, he was just mad that Puss never appreciated his lives, because in the DreamWorks universe, Cats have 9 lives, where others only have 1. Death isn’t the villain, he’s an example that we should try to live our life with good choices, and to live it to the fullest.

I love the ending we got. While Puss have the upper hand in the last fight.
He knows he can't won, not against the being in front of him.
Against a literal concept that has taken even the mightiest of warriors.
A being who existed since the beginning of time.
He cannot win against that and he acknowledges that. He even acknowledge that they WILL meet again.
Because no one could escape death.

Frivolous. End. But you... didn't even notice me, because "Puss in Boots laughs in the face of Death", right? But you're not laughing now."
Puss in Boots: [shocked/horrified upon realizing the mysterious Wolf's identity] "You are no bounty hunter. You are..."
Death Wolf: [revealing his true name] "Death. And I don't mean it metaphorically or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or any other fancy way. I'M DEATH. STRAIGHT. UP. And I have come for you, Puss in Boots."
Puss in Boots: "B-But... I'm still alive..."
Death Wolf: [chuckles sinisterly while showing his complete distaste for Cats, as well as the real reason as to why he want's to kill Puss in Boots] "You know, I'm not a cat person. I find the very idea of nine lives ABSURD!" (points a sickle at Puss, glaring at him) "And you didn't value any of them. Sooo, why don’t I do us both a favor, and take this last one, now?"
    Puss' 2nd Life: "That's cheating!"
Death Wolf: [throws a sickle behind him into that Puss' crystal] "Shh, don't tell." [the crystal shatters]
Puss's 1st Life: [shouting before being shattered] "Run, Puss in Boots! Make the wish!"
Death Wolf: [before chasing Puss in Boots] "Go ahead, run for it. Makes it more fun for me." [while chasing/attempting to catch/kill Puss in Boots] "Run................................... Run ................................. RUN!!!"

Alright, death for me is in the same ball park as Gaunter Od Dimm, creepy yet cool theme, inevitable and calm, collected and calculating. Yet can flex wherever need to be, Death dodging Puss strikes saying, Slow, Sappy and Sad while Gaunter just stops time. Come to think of it Death doesn't even have the courtesy of stopping time. It's just the pure fact that he is inevitable is what puts him up there as a villain.
