Mauls freakout at the end of The Clone Wars when he was shouting "We're all going to die! You don't know what you're doing!" is so foreboding and terrifying considering the next episode after is Order 66.
@@zakstormcrow5912 He definitely did. He knew he was a tool, and someone in a reply above this said it far better then I. It's why at the very end, he let Kenobi embrace him, and asked him respectfully in his dying breathe. The writers did for him what the writers of the new era of Star wars could not for Sidious: After everyone thought he was dead, he came back and had a far great story to tell on how the balance of light and dark work
“Dad can you tell me about the tragedy of Plagueis or Anakin/Vader?” Me: “actually son.... have you heard about the tragedy of Darth Maul the lost ? It’s a story neither the sith nor Jedi will tell”
That would actually be a great story to tell. A tale full of sadness and heartbreak and suffering. A man used by everybody and discarded like a worn-away tool. For a time he gains some prominence in the criminal underworld, but then he ends up walking away from it, for whatever reasons, and searching for the one that had first defeated him, not to settle an old score, but to end the game, maybe, with some semblance of dignity.
But also the concept of his involvement in the sith taking everything from him. Imo he was referring to the concept of the sith, not a sith or some sith in particular.
@Tate Ullock yeah I agree with that, I was just saying how this line isn't directed at a singular entity or group. Working with the sith (concept, not Palpatine) resulted in the loss of his brother, his body, basically everything. To clear it up, Palpatine didn't cut his legs off for example, he lost his legs to obi wan because he was a sith.
@@kentinson1670 yes, he was kidnapped by Palpatine at a young age. Talzin was actually pretty pissed at Palpatine for stealing Maul from her and she wanted revenge in son of dathomir comics against Sidious. You should read the son of Dathomir comics. It's canon and it does a good job of showing what happened to Maul after his battle with Palpatine in season 5 of TCW.
What got me was how little actually needed to be edited in that final fight scene. The writers/story boarders for SW Rebels knew EXACTLY what they were doing there. Then Porg the Sith Lord comes around, does this, and turns a nice meal into the best goddamn food my eyes and ears have ever tasted.
did you notice that when kenboi switches on his lightsaber, he first goes into his Soresu stance but then changes into Qui Gon's Ataru stance- Maul visibly reacts to this and that's when he attacks. not only did he got got because he tried the same move that he used on Qui Gon, but he literally got baited into doing so. i think that's why he looks so shocked in the moments right after he gets struck, like he can't believe his move didn't work again
Small plot? FOOL I was the first sith in thousand of years to reveal my organization. To kill a Jedi. To get cut in half have my ultimate move stolen by the man who cut me in half. Came back like terminator. Have my brother killed by my master. Then defeated again by the man I hated the most.....oh but I’ll be back again. In a movie a show maybe even a flashback or mentioned in a conversation. But I’ll never truly die my name will always haunt the Jedi.
Savage>Maul. Allow me to explain: Savage's death was the only time I cried during the Clone Wars. "Brother, I'm an unworthy apprentice. I'm not like you...I never was." People seem to forget that Savage wasn't naturally a Jedi-killing monster. Savage was a loyal zabrak and a friend before being stripped from his village and turned into a beast by the Nightsisters against his will. For three whole seasons, Savage was a pawn---pushed around and mistreated by his superiors (the Nightsisters, Dooku, etc.). Even Maul treated him like a subordinate more than a brother. In conclusion, Savage's arc is tragic and underrated. This is why, personally, I think Savage Oppress is a better character than Maul.
@@heavyfromtf2208 antivillain. And Anti-Hero is still more heroic :p Maul does seek the "heroic" goals but his means and method are VERY un hero like and is only really doing it for himself rather than anyone else. An anti hero is someone more like Han Solo (Solo movie->New Hope- Before Battle of Yavin-), a hero who doesn't follow the conventional rules of a standard hero.
Sam Witwer said in an interview before he got the gig voicing Maul he actually had a conversation with a friend asking hypothetically if Maul had survived getting cut in half what kind of suffering would he have gone through? So he was oddly prepared for the role 👌👌
Of all characters, maul begging to be let go, to die is a testament to how terrifying and traumatic order 66 was to both Jedi, and Sith. No one was ready for the inevitable moment that everything changed.
The Duality of Maul and Kenobi is honestly one of the best ones in all of media history. Maul embodies the 'perfect' sith. He is fueled by anger, by rage, it's what drives him. His desire for revenge not only against Kenobi but also against Sidious towards the end of his life. He's not the perfect Sith, he's not all-powerful, but at his core, he represents the core Sith values perfectly and is probably my favorite example of a true Sith. Kenobi on the other hand is the perfect Jedi. No quotes there. We all know why. Saw his master and lover die, saw his apprentice and best friend turn to the dark side, yet was never truly tempted. He remained a Jedi every step of the way. He harbors no hatred for Maul, and he showed understanding and compassion when he understood where Maul came from. Also, something that I noticed watching this video, which I loved. Maul's Sith Eyes. A sith fully embarrassing the Dark Side has his pupils turn Yellow (unless you're Sidious and learned to not show them). Maul's are always bright golden in hatred. Except once: His death. I thought it would be a cool detail and then I noticed it, when he died in the hands of Kenobi, his eyes left that golden rage and had some green return to them. His death is the moment where he was finally at peace, and made peace with Kenobi. Fucking hell I love that character
I was watching this whole video and I thought it was quite good. But when the lightsaber fight edit came in I literally got goosebumps, it's simply perfect!
I haven't realized he tried to use on Obi-Wan the same trick he used to kill Qui-Gon (the surprise hit in the face) and it was what led to his end, since Obi ducked and sliced through it. Nice. Goes to show my favorite thing about Kenobi; Doesn't matter his age or rank, dude always learning and evolving. It's also one of the differences between them - They are both survivors, each one dealt damages to the other, and both lost everything - But Kenobi survived by acceptance and moving on, while Maul survived through his lust for revenge, what kept him perpetually chained in the past.
@@DesolatedChild018 Theres a whole dissection and discussion about this last duel. Firstly, historically its the most "accurate" representation of a duel the universe has ever depicted. Historical duels between samurai, or really any fencing or bladefighting, really only lasts one exchange, maybe two or three blows max. Two samurai would circle one another, changing stances, looking for an opening, the perfect moment to strike. When the exchange came, there would only be one chance. And in this duel, Everything leading up to that last fateful exchange was a mind battle, and Obi Wan won before the blow even fell, because he GOADED Darth Maul into doing what he did. Notice how Obi Wan adopts his signature Soresu style stance. Then to mock him Maul switches stances to the same one he used before he killed Qui-Gon. To call his bluff and goad him in, he switches to Qui-Gons Ataru, taking the same stance Qui-Gon used before Maul killed him. And Maul did not switch his stance, but you can see the realization in his eyes, and the anger, and he fell right into Obi Wans trap. Besides the fact they are now in the open, which is where Ataru shines, Obi Wan learned from watching Maul kill his master, and spent a lot of time studying, not just that final fight, but Ataru in general. He tricked Maul into making the exact same move again, but instead of falling for the feint that killed Qui Gon, he cuts straight down the center, ending mauls life. Maul had just enough time to realize he wasn't just fighting "A rat in the desert". This is a Jedi "Master" One of the most accomplished and intelligent Jedi masters of the recent era. A Jedi master who survived Order 66. And a Jedi Master on guard duty, which means hes protecting someone extremely important. He totally underestimated and misjudged his opponent.
@@Cryogenius333 In general I've viewed that as Maul's biggest weakness. In every fight he loses he's underestimating someone or trying to look ahead to another fight and start preparing when he really needed to focus on the moment he was in. It's a nice contrast to the idea behind the Jedi as well, since they are supposed to live in the moment by contrast. You can even see when he starts beating these moments, against some of his fights with Obi-Wan when he first returns or against Ahsoka during rebels, where he's really intent on proving himself and showing he isn't as weak as many believe, he does incredibly well. Then he fights Kanan, or fights Ahsoka when he wanted to draw in Anakin and Obi-Wan, and he starts trying to accomplish other objectives because the fight is 'beneath him' and he gets punked by the enemy.
@@FPSfanatic96 Maul is a classic example of someone suffering from severe personality disorders. Hes been beaten broken and abused his entire life, he got cut in half. Hes half insane. After spending his entire life getting the shit kicked out of him in preparation to be Palpatines Apprentice, Palpatine dropped him like a moldy potato. Hes never been "good enough" He's a being of pure rage and pain. Hes never going to think things through, and every moment looking forward is purely in anticipation of the moment he gets to face Obi Wan, while every other moment is spent looking back. so in a way you are correct. He never lived in the moment. Always pacing like a caged animal, raring for blood waiting for the next door to open
The fact that Obiwan held Maul in his last moments, the same way he held his loved ones that Maul killed, was truly beautiful. I think it really shows how much Obi wan was able to empathize with people, even when they did horrible things to him.
Well he understood all the way back in the clone wars that his choice to become a sith wasn't his "I've been to your village, I know the choice to join the sith wasn't yours"
@@themarsman5155 i think if it would have beeing the other way around, Maul would have probably done something alike. Perhaps not to show empathy, but to behold the last moments of his old lifetime rival, who i believe in these moment after all he passed and knew (with time Obi-Wan became more of a shadow than an obsesion, specially after his prophetic vision) he ended up respecting him
The fact that he said that he will avenge us is just truly amazing, he could’ve said something hateful for his last words but he chose to die in forgiving arms and put their differences aside for the future, Maul is a legend
It cast the final stark difference between Kenobi and Maul. His dying words were true of the Sith, revenge. Whereas Kenobi believed in restoring the balance, selfish vs selfless. He never understood the Jedi, he was simply brainwashed by the Sith. Even at his end, he couldn't break free of the torment, of the damage of the Sith. A remarkable bit of character writing
@@thesenate3728 Definitely. Although, I like to think that there’s a sort of light side spin to it; it gives Maul hope for the future after his own death, which to me isn’t a trait you’d normally find in someone saturated in the dark side. I love Maul’s character so much, such a tragic individual. I think that in the moment that he was dealt a mortal blow, he knew that this was how he was meant to die, and he was content in knowing that Kenobi was protecting the new hope for the galaxy.
I like though that when he says it, Obi Wan almost seems to.. accept it as his way. Like he knew that was how Maul was to find peace. And in the end, Obi Wan was OK with that.
Who could have guessed that a minor character with almost no dialogue would become one of the most layered and interesting antagonists in all of Star Wars?
That may be but he wouldn’t have had the same background with all his experiences which is what drove him to being broken and seeing things clearly at the same time his character is the most genius and complex I’ve seen in my entire life.

“Is he the chosen one?” “Yes..” “He shall avenge us both” Straight shivers knowing that the hatred Maul felt was pain of betrayal and everting he had been put through just to finally give into his light side at death hoping this child would be the one to avenge everything he had endured
@@shriharihudli interestingly, vader killed most of the jedis, killed the sith lord then *died* and unintentionally brought almost perfect balance to the force
He’s talking about Luke. And he didn’t give into his light side. The joke is the light side and the dark side are both the bad guys and good guys. One is seemingly altruistic but cold, unfeeling and detached. And one is seemingly wretched but passionate and human. The Jedi stole just as much from obi won and other Jedi as the sith stole from maul.
I love how Maul was built as a throwaway character, literally just a man who grunted, killed a jedi, used 2 sabers and promptly died. But they injected life into this character, so have him blossom form nothing to a bigger character than Grevious. But despite all that, they built his character on being a throwaway. He was rejected and cast aside but he just kept coming back, fueled only by his hatred, hence the name of this video. Truly an amazing character.
Yeah its amazing how Maul went from a "Who cares he is dead" to "Damn, Maul is such an amazing character, its insane how much character he has after The Clone Wars & Rebels". Hes one of my top 5 favourite for sure.
Gotta admit that you're right, Maul has a tragic story for who was originally a throw away character. Kinda sad that he was killed so fast in the movies but he is one of the best characters from the franchise Being trained by him instead of Dooku would have been cool now that I think about it
The saddest thing about Maul is that he doesn’t hate Obi-Wan. He just latches onto him thinking that he hates him because he knows that he will never be able to get revenge on the man he truly despises, Palpatine.
I think this is what he really wanted to happen anyway. If he had won, he would be even more miserable than he was before. Short of killing the one that actually wronged him, this was his perfect end. He had his final confrontation and he found peace. He was relieved of his hatred.
@@thegoodolddays9193, I'd go as far to say that in this end, though it was only for a moment, he found his salvation. He was dominated and learned what hatred was, he was indoctrinated to live an incredibly hateful life. He was bested in combat by Obi. Therefore probably respecting him as an opponent, thus why he won't kill him. He never truly hated Obi Wan. He found redemption in realizing this. Redemption from the darkside. Like Obi Wan said, Maul was forced into this. Indoctrinated. Which is what makes his final end matter so much more. Instead of going to what the Jedi might call hell, or some sort of punishment in that kind of afterlife. Maul's soul may have been redeemed after finally letting go of his hatred. As Maul said. "He will avenge us". Maul never wanted to kill Obi Wan. He just wanted a reason to hold onto his hatred. When Maul was defeated, Obi didn't actually land a killing blow. Or so it doesn't seem like it. Instead, it just seems that Maul simply gave up his will to fight because in that moment he found respite and redemption in realizing that Obi Wan was protecting the chosen one. You can see it in his face and hear it in his voice. The animators, directors and the one voice actor of Maul. They all did such an incredible job. Maul was the only Character of any show, movie, and anime I've ever seen with THIS much Character development. Unfortunately there will never be another Character in any media or maybe in any book that has such a deep level development.
I completely agree with this statement is very obvious that this is the case especially when you look at how he deals with Ezra. he's so full of hate but he doesn't have a direction for it that he can do anything about.
(Star Wars novice) Is there any way to train and grow stronger in your respected force practices? Or are where you are to an extent? What I’m asking is could he have trained and eventually been able to kill Palpentine or was he always out of his reach? Because he truly feared Palpentine and once they fought in the clone wars with Savage on his side I understood why
The saddest thing about it: It wouldn’t have stopped at kenobi It wouldn’t have stopped at Ashoka It wouldn’t even have stopped at palpatine No level of vengeance could have filled the void of feeling wronged that maul had. Nothing could’ve brought him the closure he felt he deserved.
His goal wasn't just revenge, but ultimately to gain as much power as possible, which is the goal of the Sith. I think had the original sequel trilogy idea been implanted instead of that abomination we got from Disney, we would have seen a somewhat different Maul, less fueled by hatred and more by a desire for regaining power he once held onto.
"There is no solace in vengeance. There is no purpose in hatred. Because one day There will come a time when you've killed every last thing in the world, and when that time comes, the only person left to hate will be yourself"
This “He will avenge us” at the end hits so deep because he realizes that both, him and Obi-Wan, have lost everything because of Darth Vader and the Emperor. Both stories are similar in a certain way and at the end he realizes that they are allied, even tho they have one of the deepest and longest nemesis-relationships ever created. The only hope for both of them is Luke Skywalker.
I saw a cool discussion about that line where perhaps maul was referring to anakin and obi wan said yes still wanting to believe he can be redeemed. Flimsy Ik but I found it interesting
It was all because of emperor Palpatine that all this happened .. When maul fell to obi-wan it opened the way to anikan and when anikan fell to the dark side all of the Republic fell with him into darkness .. Sidious ruled with an iron fist until finally he fell to a father's love for his son ... The Justice and peace that soo many died for rested on the shoulders of one.. Luke Skywalker
I absolutely love how Obi wan held Maul in his arms like an old friend after defeating him, and instead of Maul feeling hatred toward him, he seemed comfort in his final moments, seeing him and Obi Wan as equals who were both victims.
i feel like obi-wan held him in his arms because he knew even if maul took Qui-gon and Satine away from him, he didnt mean to, because maul is driven by pure rage and never thinks rationally, he knew inside maul was a lost soul and never wanted to be what he was, so he felt as if when he defeted maul, he wanted to consol him, basically telling him to let go of his rage, just like he tried to do that in mandalore
“The Sith took everything from me, ripped me from my mother’s arms, murdered my brother, used me as a weapon and then cast me aside” wow that is probably the most accurate understanding of the sith and human toxicity as i have ever heard. Maul is a wonderful character because he has been broken so and through it all he has endured and survived. “I am the last survivor and i can thrive in the chaos that will come” he was truly a survivor till he met the one man whose conviction and will was stronger than his own, the same man who bested him so long ago. What a character arc what a character study on hatred, loss, and revenge.
I love how Maul's final encounter with Obi-Wan wasn't a big fight like they had before, but rather this silent, focused confrontation where Maul has finally found peace. Obi-Wan's wisdom and compassion in this scene is for me what proves he is a true master. I can't imagine a better ending to Maul's pursuit of Obi-Wan. Incredibly well written characters, both of them.
@@Whxrecore its a bit deeper then that. obi Swapped from his stance Soresu aka the defensive stance into ataru the stance that qui gon was a master in. this lured maul into being the aggressor as he understood that a. It’s insane how a character who was introduced more than 20 years ago and had like 10 minutes of screen-time, transformed and evolved into one of the most in-depth, deep and tragic characters in all of Star Wars. Maul goes down as one of my all time favourite characters in Star Wars.
There were only two people who didn’t use maul as tool...his brother and obi-wan. One died in his arms and he died in the others arms. Saddest shit I’ve ever seen.
@Serious Sketch In legends they go to Starbucks to get some coffee and they get to know eachother, but Qui-Gon makes fun of his mom so Maul tells him "U ded"
Actually Mother Talzin loved him as a son and tried to protect him. In the comics Sidious uses this by making Maul bait in order to set a trap for Talzin, resulting in her death by General Grievous. She didn't die in his arms though. She just got impaled while Maul got dragged away by his own troops trying to save him from going after her.

With them bringing Palpatine back, as tragic as that was, it even justifies the games and their lore, the cloning technology would eventually go on to save Palps life.
The Sequels are bullshit and Rey is a terrible protagonist. The prequels , Originals, and the Clone Wars series and Rebels series are GOATED and it all makes sense and keeps the story connected
I just wanna point something out here. Disney was already in charge of Rebels when that piece of dialogue happened, so Disney literally created this entire episode. Only to make it worthless with the Rise of Mary Sue.
@Ryan Kowalski; You know Kathleen Kennedy? She’s one of the people that helped make The Last Airbender live action movie. That alone should explain everything.

@@traktor420 Luke kind of didn't have a father though. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, and he called them as such. He was the only character who understood how the galaxy worked in its entirety both light and dark side. He was cursed to know while being unable to prevent his own suffering.
The saddest tragedy of Maul and Obi Wan is that they wanted the same thing. Neither wanted to kill the other: Maul only wanted to make Obi Wan suffer so he could understand the same pain and loneliness he felt. Obi Wan was constantly teaching Maul a lesson that the Dark Side was the only thing he could blame for his suffering. Maul didn't want to feel alone, and Obi Wan did not want him to feel alone, either. It makes their final confrontation all the more heartbreaking for them both.
When Maul said “He will avenge us.” He wasn’t just talking about him and Savage he was talking about everyone he was talking about his village, he was talking about Ventress, he was talking about Asoka, he was talking about everyone who’s life was stolen and destroyed by the Sith, and most of all he was talking about him and Kenobi because there life’s mirror each other they both lost brothers to Lord Sidious, both lost there purpose, and both had there lives destroyed by the Sith. They were Twin sons and brothers.
And not just them, also all the beings swept up in the clone wars, all a part of the grandmaster plan of one being, one entity to rule them all, only to be defeated by the chosen one, the skywalker lineage.
I think everyone of us can find a piece of us in Maul. No wonder he is so beloved by fans. ...I've watched this video wayyyy to many times over the past years... so much that I can recite it even today. I'm happy that I'm in a better place now... took me long enough but there will always be a part of me who identifies strongly with Maul. I'm not a huge star wars fan, well, not anymore but I'm grateful that I've found the light.
In Maul's last moments, I think he was finally able to give up his hatred. His question of "Is he the chosen one?" is so telling in what he has finally come to realize. That Obi-Wan is the protector for this new chosen one. He dies believing that he and Obi-Wan will both finally be avenged for the betrayal they endured at the hands of Sidious. He almost has a sense of peace as he dies. A sense of closure. The purity of Obi-Wan's heart is also seen here. That even this being of darkness and hatred, he is able to connect with. Maul truly is one of the most tragic stories throughout the Star Wars universe. A very well made video.
I think Maul wanted to die he went for the same dirty move he did to Qui-gon, knowing Obi to remember it and counter or maybe in that moment he just wanted to kill him the same way he did before and didn't expect the counter
@@theliveing I'd say it's both, he definitely baited Maul, and you can see Maul recognize Qui Gon's stance, but I feel like Maul probably wanted to die a little since he really had nothing left at that point, even if he managed to kill Obi, what then, there's not much for him, dying was the best thing that could happen at that point, I mean he wanted to die way earlier like when he was talking to Ahsoka so I think it's possible he still did deep down.

Serious Sketch I don’t think he wanted to. I think he just wanted something to end. Be it the hate for the man that cut him down from the future he dreamed of, or his life so the pain would stop. Maul’s path was a dark and weary one. He lost everyone he cared about, all his ambitions shattered as he was left to wallow in the dark. I think at the end he was tired of it all and wanted to finish his part with one last defiant baring of teeth.
Yeah that part is just haunting, it doesn't help that the entire season, the "end of it all" is taking place when none of the characters we see in this season know that it's going on. I had a constant gut wrenching feeling of dread and impending Doom during this season.
Its a tradition to come to this masterpiece every once in a while. One of the most if not the most underrated characters. If he appeared in more movies than just Phantom Menace his popularity would have skyrocketed but I will never forget what Dave and the writers did for his character in the Clone Wars and Rebels. Art.
They made a character that was wasted when killed into one of the best characters in all of star wars. His story is so good. His ending is storytelling to perfection.
A movie or spin-off show of Maul's past would be better than the new Skywalker Trilogy. People that never seen the Clone Wars and Rebels wouldn't realise that Darth Maul was forced into the Dark Side would probably have a hard time watching his origin it be heartbreaking because in the end the character would be sympathetic and pitied for what happened to him. Darth Maul is second to Vader of villainy. Disney has a problem with there villains doing a 180 in their life. But not saying Vader isn't bad he redeemed himself to save his son that is why he is a good Character. Maul never changed and that's why is a good character. In Maul's end he said "He will avenge US." Maul didn't do a 180 because Palpatine betrayed him, he was in his own way being a "hero" while being a villain, and that's also why he is a good character. In the end Maul was enlightened to know that both he and the Jedi would be avenged. Even after the hate within him against Kenobi died with him.
Personally, I was not a fan of how he lost to Kenobi in their final duel. I felt that it was cheap. But him dying in the arms of Obi Wan, who still showed him compassion, was a nice move.
@@xavierhall185 Agreed. I hated how quick that was. Maul and Kenobi needed a very epic drawn out final duel bit they wasted 80% of the episode on Ezra and Chopper...
Maul and Ahsoka both, to me, showed what being betrayed by the light and dark side can do to one. Both showed the qualities not of an absolute, but of seeing it from both perspectives, just different ideals in how to achieve balance. With Maul being on the darker side of things, and Ahsoka being on the lighter side. But no matter how saturated he was in the dark side, no matter if he believed in revenge. At the very end, he chose to believe in the prophecy of the chosen one, something you'd NEVER expect for a dark side character. I really felt bad for him when he screamed at them to just let him die, and that all were going to burn.
@@user-ce6iy2nw5o Guess that's true. The dark side isn't inherently evil. I actually love the way he clipped "Only the weak embrace the dark side" amongst the fight at the end. Because Obi-Wan embraced him, as if to say he understood.
That scene of him floating over Mandalore and begging to be killed before he saw the rise of a site empire was chilling. I never really felt bad for Maul until that moment when I fully saw him as what he was, a tool used in creating a death machine. He was terrified of what would become of the galaxy and wanted to escape it any way possible
The darkside corrupts people and destroys their spirit, leaving them to be a broken shadow only to hate. That happened to you top Anakin. If we only had notice early that we did everything wrong... If we only had noticed
This was spectacularly done and so heartbreaking. I’ve always had a soft spot for Maul. I remember being 8 and losing my mind in the cinema when he broke out that double lightsaber. I’m glad Clone Wars and Rebels gave him a more fleshed out story.
Maul has got to be one of the best, most tragic, most relatable characters ever written in modern fantasy. Not a villain, just an antagonist. Just a guy, trying to get by, with a warped and twisted view of the world, and the only person he can talk to he wants to kill.
@@thatguylogan_21 Old Man Kenobi just feels older, so I kinda forgot he was only 50, but yeah Zabraks are also not Longer Lived than humans dunno where I got that, they actually live slightly shorter (than Star wars humans who on Average live to 100, and Zabraks on average live to 80)
So this is everything. Maul was a creature fueled by hate. Others...the Nightsisters, the Mandalorians, Sheev in particular...took advantage of that. Obi-Wan was the first to see him as a being, something more than a tool...if only with his dying breaths.
The voice actor for Maul got so into character that he had panic attacks while voicing Maul and they were so on point with the character that most were kept in.
Someone once said Anakin/Vader is the most tragic character in Star Wars. I raise you Maul: -Abducted as a child and trained to hate Jedi, with the purpose of destroying them -Almost wins galaxy-defining duel, instead cut in half -Spends a decade gone mad and living in a garbage dump -Former master rejects him and kills his brother -Wins the right to rule a people by their own laws, but is rejected -Becomes a business owner. Something tragic happens to lose that and find himself stranded on a deserted planet. -Decides to pass on his knowledge to an apprentice, but is abandoned -Tracks down his old rival, but is killed by him
This is the best tribute to Maul that I have ever seen, you really captured his whole life and character beats very well. I like that you included all Star Wars media even the comics, great work.
@@AlexanderTheBloodraven that's why you ignore disney unless it adds to the universe. Rebels is shit for a lot of reasons, but the Ahsoka and Maul arcs were wonderful
The scene of Maul screaming at the clones about how they don't know what they're doing, followed by Palpatine smiling is so well done. Nobody ever would have listened to him because of who he was, and yet it's because of who he was that he knows so much. I also love that when Maul tells Kenobi that Luke will avenge them, you can see Obi-Wan grimace. Even after everything Maul had done to him, I think a part of him hoped that he would make an effort to see the light. But instead Maul saw it as just another opportunity for revenge, and it broke Kenobi's heart
It is an ethereal line sometimes between revenge and justice at times and Kenobi knows that. I think part of that grimace is that he knows what he feels and what Maul feels on the matter of Palpatine is only separated by a little uncontrolled personal rage. Palpatine hurt them both in many of the same ways, and their lives have taken some of the same trajectories. But the defining difference between a Jedi and a Sith is a Jedi acts for the greater good while trying to keep a leash on those more primal aspects of their being. So in Maul's last breath, Kenobi may have well seen some of himself in Maul.
A man who was taken from his family, trained to be a monster, was cast out for failure, had to claw and fight for survival, reunited with a man he considers his brother, reborn again, struck down by his former master and made to watch the death of said brother, confronted and lost to his nemesis again and again... finds himself dying next to the man he hated for so long. All his hatred and anger seeming to drift away with his dying breath. Holy shit, what a character.
@@skepabbas9400 Maul's the greatest rival to Kenobi. Maul's rivalry with Kenobi is much more personal than his rivalry with Dooku or Grievous. Even Vader is not Kenobi's greatest rival because Maul affected Kenobi much more. He killed his master and love and changed Kenobi's life forever. You can't say the same thing about Vader because it was Sidious that destroyed the Jedi order and the republic and he was the direct cause to Anakin's turn. So I believe that Maul and Obi-Wan have one of the greatest rivalries in star wars.
For anyone curious Old Wounds is a legends short story that involved Darth Maul tracking Obi Wan to Tatooine. Oh and Uncle Owen got involved too which was nice
No Anakin is about selfhate. Maul doesn't hate himself, he hates everyone who wronged him with the intensity of a thousand suns, but he doesn't hate himself.
@@ZainAhmed-ns2di you're right I meant Darth Vader not Anakin; Anakin cares a lot about a lot of people, he therefore hates the people who want to hurt them. But I'm sorry, Darth Vader hates himself ᵃ ˡⁱᵗᵗˡᵉ ᵇⁱᵗ? Darth Vader believes he lost everything he ever had because of his own actions. The only outside person I believe he truly hates is Obi-Wan who he believes betrayed him (which to be fair he did a bit). As an example: when in legends Darth Vader and Maul had a duel Maul asks "what could you possibly hate enough to defeat me?" And Vader replies "Myself" as he stabs himself through the gut into Maul who is standing behind him. The fact that Vader's selfhate is virtually the only thing keeping him on the dark side is also the only reason why Luke was able to redeem him: by showing he can be forgiven.
The voice acting of maul is just... At the end of every sentence you can feel the friction as his words land, giving you an insight to the man's pure fury. And sometimes you hear the pure despair of loneliness, his languish, his pain, his fear, his search for a purpouse that ultimately falls to revenge caused by a lack of other options. His hatred for kenobi, his fear of sidious pain him so, yet he can not even afford to let go since it's his fuel to power. After all, what is he going to do without power? How will he defend himself if sidious tracks him down? A broken, hurt, fearful man who was taught wrong. Someone who could have become so much more, a man who only sought to live, for the sake of being alive rather than living. Alas he defaulted into causing Kenobi suffering, without an end, he killed his brother, and that wasn't enough. He was flawed, he didn't see the injustice he caused, but rather the one's that were cast upon him. Rather than trying to help himself recover, to make sure such a thing happens never again, he sought to make others feel what he felt. I love how Maul doesn't even remember his name, symbolising how greater chunks of his life was taken away. Truly, a great tribute for such a great character.
The first time I saw Witwer in anything he was an extra in Always Sunny with like 2 lines. Turns out the dude helped make my favorite character in all of Star wars.
Love the "He will avenge us." line. As Obi-Wan holds him in his coming death, Maul realises Obi-Wan was never his enemy. They were both tricked by Palpatine. He was tricked by Palpatine into focusing on wrong person.
The fact that he said "he will avenge us" is a testament that maul never wanted to be a sith but when every emotion inside him fell short of his rage and hatred there was no other road for him to choose but in the end he still wanted to see the fall of Palpatine
I watch this about 2-3 times a year. It just shows the phenomenal storytelling that Clone Wars had, especially with an enigmatic being like Maul. From his tragic background, his antihero arc, and even the voice acting is so dang incredible. So glad they fleshed out this character in the way they did, this is writing at its best!
Obiwan was the one constant in his life he did not feel betrayed by him. He trusted obi wan to be his enemy and I think this gave him comfort.
it gave him anger, fuelled by kenobi only.
I wouldn't say he trusted him. It was a simple revenge plot between them, even although maul came to hate the very thing he is he knew he was gonna die regardless

Amazing how The Clone Wars and Rebels transformed this character from almost nothing to pretty much the best villain in the Star Wars universe.
Savage>Maul. Allow me to explain:
Savage's death was the only time I cried during the Clone Wars.

@@NixonRules963 Now that you've mentioned it, I really feel bad for Maul, literally.

The throw away character that didn't want to be
Being cut horizontally and vertically
Not that being bigger than Canon Grievous is that hard.
Legends Grievous on the other hand was a juggernaut that carried his own story.
Gotta admit that you're right, Maul has a tragic story for who was originally a throw away character. Kinda sad that he was killed so fast in the movies but he is one of the best characters from the franchise
Being trained by him instead of Dooku would have been cool now that I think about it
The saddest thing about Maul is that he doesn’t hate Obi-Wan.
@@thegoodolddays9193 I completely agree
I completely agree with this statement is very obvious that this is the case especially when you look at how he deals with Ezra. he's so full of hate but he doesn't have a direction for it that he can do anything about.

No I think just the emperor. Palpating was the root to both of there suffering.
As a wise man once said "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"
It was all because of emperor Palpatine that all this happened ..
When maul fell to obi-wan it opened the way to anikan and when anikan fell to the dark side all of the Republic fell with him into darkness ..
Sidious ruled with an iron fist until finally he fell to a father's love for his son ... The Justice and peace that soo many died for rested on the shoulders of one..

In Maul's last moments, I think he was finally able to give up his hatred. His question of "Is he the chosen one?" is so telling in what he has finally come to realize. He wasn’t even evil he was just broken
I was hoping for Kenboi......why are you here?
Like you
all villains are just broken heroes.
I’m sure u can relate
Well put.
not a twisted view of the world. but of the universe.
So, we're going to forget about Guts? Figures.
Ever heard of Guts? No one in fiction can beat his tragedy.
And yes Maul is a villain, for all the horrible things he's done.
@@braderkofte7792 I agree
I feel like. In mauls final moment he was shown the most compassion He's ever had. Obi wan caught him as he fell..
This
That's probably why he died, his rage melted away and that's what kept him alive (Edited cuz I misremembered star wars lore)
@@rescuerex7031 well said, but maul is actually 2 years younger than obi-wan
@@thatguylogan_21 Old Man Kenobi just feels older, so I kinda forgot he was only 50, but yeah Zabraks are also not Longer Lived than humans dunno where I got that, they actually live slightly shorter (than Star wars humans who on Average live to 100, and Zabraks on average live to 80)
So this is everything. Maul was a creature fueled by hate. Others...the Nightsisters, the Mandalorians, Sheev in particular...took advantage of that. Obi-Wan was the first to see him as a being, something more than a tool...if only with his dying breaths.
SO ARE WE NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS AMAZING VOICE ACTING
The voice actor for Maul got so into character that he had panic attacks while voicing Maul and they were so on point with the character that most were kept in.
@@profsoul5224 what really ??

Someone once said Anakin/Vader is the most tragic character in Star Wars. I raise you Maul:
-Abducted as a child and trained to hate Jedi, with the purpose of destroying them
-Almost wins galaxy-defining duel, instead cut in half
-Spends a decade gone mad and living in a garbage dump
-Former master rejects him and kills his brother
-Wins the right to rule a people by their own laws, but is rejected
-Becomes a business owner. Something tragic happens to lose that and find himself stranded on a deserted planet.
-Decides to pass on his knowledge to an apprentice, but is abandoned
-Tracks down his old rival, but is killed by him
Still Anakin but Maul is close yes
-rejected by the only other person who understood what it felt like to be used
-failed to deprive his former master from his prized pupil
This is the best tribute to Maul that I have ever seen, you really captured his whole life and character beats very well. I like that you included all Star Wars media even the comics, great work.
Ending made my eyes sweat. Amazing tribute. Maul has always been my favorite since I saw episode 1 when I was a little bugger
For me this has passed “Old Wounds”
Absolutely true
My favourite is Maul-Revenge of the Fallen from Fulcrum. I reccomend you checking it out
This is awesome as well
Just watched the fulcrum edit, it was very good as well
"He Will Avenge Us" I literally was covered in goosebumps after that. Maul is the best Star Wars character change my mind.
facts
Thrawn
Agreed
Who was he talking about tho??
Facts
"It is such a quiet thing... to fall......but far more terrible...is to admit it"
-Darth Treya
Mom Treya is speaking facts
yes
Thx for the Grandma Machiavelli quote ^ ^
According to Disney, she didn’t say that.
Or anything at all, for that matter.
Savage WAS LITERALLY his brother
Savage was his blood brother and his other brother strangled by Savage
Yet he still stayed loyal/stuck to the dark side to his end. "He... will... AVENGE... us"
@@nemesispax0383 half brother same mother (probably) different fathers
Maul is Kenobi’s greatest rival. And Kenobi is Maul’s . Their arc is more compelling, more complete, than any in Star Wars. Fantastic video.
You could say grievous was kenobi's greatest rival or Darth Vader or count dooku. Kenobi had a lot of enemies...
@@skepabbas9400 i would say Maul
@@skepabbas9400 Maul's the greatest rival to Kenobi. Maul's rivalry with Kenobi is much more personal than his rivalry with Dooku or Grievous. Even Vader is not Kenobi's greatest rival because Maul affected Kenobi much more. He killed his master and love and changed Kenobi's life forever. You can't say the same thing about Vader because it was Sidious that destroyed the Jedi order and the republic and he was the direct cause to Anakin's turn. So I believe that Maul and Obi-Wan have one of the greatest rivalries in star wars.
Skepter 101 wtf no
Yeah we both hate each other
"There is no Palpatine. No Empire. No Jedi. There is no light, no dark… just you and I here now."
(Old Wounds)
For anyone curious Old Wounds is a legends short story that involved Darth Maul tracking Obi Wan to Tatooine. Oh and Uncle Owen got involved too which was nice
@@bambi5227 I read it too but I didn’t like Owen killing Maul
if you want can you check my last edit
I love how he finds a sort of peace in his final moments
The end of hatred: death
Second, and nothing compares to mental distress quite like maul. Anakin is about internal rage, Maul is about his internal sanity.
Anakin is rage.
Maul is rage plus insanity and I intelligence
The voice work by Sam WItwer to convey Maul's inner torment and struggles with sanity was so very well done.
No Anakin is about selfhate. Maul doesn't hate himself, he hates everyone who wronged him with the intensity of a thousand suns, but he doesn't hate himself.
@@MattFyrm anakin isnt about self hate. Maybe when he becomes vader he hates himself a little bit. But still he mainly just hates everyone
And to think he was planned as a one and done character. I'm glad the fans kept voicing their desires for a Maul continuation
Sam Witwer would make an astounding voice for Jared Nomak.
Take a like, young skywalker
I just have to say, Sam Witwers performance on Maul was absolutely next level.
As another commenter said "Sam Witwer deserves every reward ever"
The first time I saw Witwer in anything he was an extra in Always Sunny with like 2 lines. Turns out the dude helped make my favorite character in all of Star wars.
Love the "He will avenge us." line. As Obi-Wan holds him in his coming death, Maul realises Obi-Wan was never his enemy. They were both tricked by Palpatine. He was tricked by Palpatine into focusing on wrong person.
The fact that he said "he will avenge us" is a testament that maul never wanted to be a sith but when every emotion inside him fell short of his rage and hatred there was no other road for him to choose but in the end he still wanted to see the fall of Palpatine
the voice actor of Maul is beyond incredible
in case you didn't know, the voice actor of maul is the same guy who was starkiller :)
Good Ol Sam Witwer
i hope that someday there will be more not canon content, i wish there was more about both of those and many more characters
He also played doomsday in the Smallville TV series.
Yes Sam Witwer brings so much to his performances Maul and Starkiller are so emotional and Sam nails that emotion
Always remember, I am fear.
Always remember, I am a hunter.
Always remember, I am filth.
Always remember, I am nothing.
always remember, i am so much more.

They say the poets who went mad wrote their best after the fact
Maul was never a redeemable character, but boy was he human. Suffering twisted him into a monster.
But it was so artistically done
I watch this about 2-3 times a year. It just shows the phenomenal storytelling that Clone Wars had, especially with an enigmatic being like Maul. From his tragic background, his antihero arc, and even the voice acting is so dang incredible. So glad they fleshed out this character in the way they did, this is writing at its best!
I watch it 2-3 times a day
