The best thing about these videos is 3 generations of men working together. That’s the most beautiful, age-old tradition, the importance of which can not be overstated. I was fortunate to be able to wrench and build with my father and the confidence and self reliance that builds in a young man, not to mention the transfer of knowledge and wisdom, builds the sort of men sorely needed in this world. God Bless you all, and thanks for sharing with us, it’s a wonderful thing.
Don’t care what Paul calls things, I know what he’s talking about. It’s what he’s doing, how he does it and the results he gets that make this channel. Bring on the Toyota
Keep up the great work Michelle. I was quizzed over 40 years what a part was and did. I miss him asking now that he is gone. You and Paul make me think of great memories. Thank you.
"We just have to get the motivation to start" Had a boss one time always tell us "Don't let the start stop you" - Always thought this was great advice since we would sometimes spend hours trying to figure out the best place to start and ultimately get nothing done. Found that just starting someplace would usually reveal the best place
I've been trying to get people to understand for years that it's impossible to finish something you don't start, but seems that the fact that something's difficult or complex prevents them from just getting going.
That's a really cool tow truck. I really like to watch these building videos, they are really good. At least a hundred times better than TV’s artificial car-building programs with staged scenes and silly schedules. Not to mention good humor and funny coincidences, which are true things. I’m glad Paul´s hand it´s better too.
I have enjoyed watching your videos big thumbs up and 5 stars all the way ! This is the video that got me to use my phone and leave a comment ( normally I watch on smart tv ) you are putting in u-joint snap ring which In my garage are known as Jesus clips ( Jesus where did that clip go ) thanks for the great entertainment and educational videos keepM coming !
Paul and Michelle, I rewatched this one today, on my dad’s and step-mom’s 46th wedding anniversary, just because Grandpa Sherm was in this one. As others have noted, great to see you and your dad together in the shop Paul, and your son too. I spent little time with my dad as I grew up in a broken home. Spent a little more time with my Grandpa Brown, as he and Gram lived just down the street. Great channel, great learning/teaching, and a blessing to know you (virtually).
I love that truck! A little tip an old timer taught me with u-joints: When you get done putting them together and they’re a little tight, just wrap each one of the flanges or ears on the yoke that surround the u-joint cap with a hammer and they’ll move like butter after. Agreed - Spicer are the best🙂.
Great video! It was a pleasure meeting you and your son. You know, a person can work a job. Be loyal, hard working, learn the ropes, make your bones. Then 20 years later you get a gold watch. That FJ45 is your gold watch! Make it yours.
To me the "drive line" is the entire drive system, engine, gearbox, drive shaft, and axle. But everyone use words differently, all the time, and about all sorts of stuff. If it's clear what your talking about, then the words have done there job. Much like the way Paul uses his tools. Keep up the great content.
I had a little cat that moved in my shop years ago, 19 years later he passed away. After he hung out for some time and come winter we put a cat box in the corner by the overhead. We took him in got all his shots and had him fixed. I also put in a catflap/catdoor with a 2X2X2 mud-room inside and out of the wall. I added a tight fit obstacle course outside to help prevent dogs and larger wildlife from getting in the shop when we weren't around and it worked. Mice were a thing of the past, mice droppings were a thing of the past, mice urine on everything including receipts was a thing of the past. That little un-wanted cat ran a tight ship keeping ne'er-do-wells out of his domain.....no mice, no squirrels, no chipmunks, no gnawed electrical no gnawed nothing. Make it so she can get in and out, keep her water fresh, keep her food fresh, and keep that food & water 3 or 4 feet off the floor. I think that little black cat will earn her keep. ps: Ours was named GMC short for Grease Monkey Cat, go ahead and use that name. Add her to your video's, and she'll become part of your channel.......People like dogs and cats.
Nice to see family working together. My wife and I were installing a trailer hitch and my little son was watching with bright eyes. I was telling him that I’d teach him how to work on his car one day, but then I realized, by the time he is driving, he might end up getting an electric vehicle. Batteries are getting cheaper and gas is getting more expensive.
It must be a "Generational" thing, I'm about the age of Grampa Sherm and I just have to save old parts because I know they will be needed some day! LOL!
I just learned about Grandpa Sherman. Sorry to hear. I think its awesome you have these videos with him working on this truck, its something that you can recall and see. Memories are one thing, but having him on camera is pretty special.
I wished I would of known about those Spring hangers when I had My 87 GMC Squarebody. Would of definitely had them put on mine. The old wrecker is looking Good. Great Job Guys. Its nice to see a Father and Son working together and Not arguing the whole time...AWESOME.. Thank You for sharing..
I have always felt that each of them quietly assumes they know more than the other, but both of them knowing it doesn't matter because they are working together.
In the UK the drive line can still be called the prop shaft, by old schoolers like me, although I did escape and move to the US. Oh and snap rings can be called circlips.
@Andy Bush, you forgot that zerk fittings or grease fittings are called Grease Nipples, the hood is called the bonnet, the fenders are called the wings and the trunk is called the boot and of course the dump is called the local council recycling center and they charge you a fortune to get rid of your scrap metal! we're certainly divided by a common language!

Another great video for a Sunday morning! And I have to add that they're much more enjoyable than watching any of the popular cable TV shows where the script is force-fed by the members with overly-exaggerated enthusiasm and most of the fabrication is consisted of simply bolting on a lot of high-priced aftermarket parts.

I’m kind of surprised to see you guys throwing anything away!! You have told us all the stuff you have found at the dump…. You remind me of a guy I used to know he would go to the dump once a week but would always bring more treasures home he found than he took
Good to see you working with your dad. Soak up all that you can! I miss that. Also here in NC drive lines/drive shaft are a pretty much interchangeable term so not just a Utah thing.
Grandpa Sherm and my Dad are brothers from another mother. Dad built everything he needed and couldn’t bear to part with anything metal because it would be used some day. He also usually came home from the dump with a treasure that he couldn’t believe someone had thrown away. Dad would have loved your shop. The ratty Bobcat in my profile picture is one he rescued.
here in Eugene Oregon, we have a shop that's called driveline service of Eugene, they fix and build driveshafts, and man they are expensive. Having Paul do his own work saves a bunch of money. My vote is driveline just seems right:)
I have used that shop in Eugene before. You are right that they are expensive but they did a great job building a pair of drive shafts for my M1009 Military Blazer
Good job, Michelle, on name that part! Did I hear Paul call that a grease "zert"? My dad used to call it that, too. I believe "zerk" is correct though, so make sure to give him a little grief! 🤣 Paul, I think there's still a leaky fuel tank to address! 😁 Great stuff as always!! Keep keeping it real and fun! 🥰❤
RIP Man it's sad watching this after seeing you do the air bags. But your dad looked to be proud of his son. God bless to you and your family. Hooe the best!
I thought I was the only tightwad that washed ear plugs. Doesn’t make sense to me to throw something away and buy new that takes less than 30 seconds to clean up. Good job. Love the videos 👍🏻
GrandPa Mad Maxx! Full tank is best, Fumes are what blow up! Ya gotta respect that the boy knows & appears to live A simple, Real, Creative life, centered in family, like A good man should.
I know that thought process "just gotta get started" to well lol I wanna see the truck off road again for a comparison , see how it flexes and handles now ... Good job Paul and I enjoyed the "guess that part" with your wife ...
Back in the mid-sixties, I was a mechanic in the Army, in Germany. A part of my job was to inspect behind the truck drivers to make sure they had hit all the zerk fittings on their trucks. I had more than one driver that had tried to grease the wheel cylinder bleeder valves.
Love seeing Grandpa Sherm smiling and smooth driving that old Chevy. I am just like Grampa Sherm saving on those old pieces, as soon as you throw them out, you will need them and have to drive an hour to replace them!
Fantastic work and video Fabrat as usual. The last bit when your father test drove the truck, he looked so comfortable and at home, looks like he has this truck for a very long time and enjoy using it. This vehicle has a mad Max feel to it. I'm loving it.
When I started working around cars they were driveshafts but when I started working at a heavy truck dealership they were drivelines. They are the same-things just different terminology. 👍
Maybe it comes from the fact that most trucks are long enough that they need two or more driveshafts connected together? Then the two driveshafts and the connecting u-joint is now a driveline?
My Sympathy to you and your family on the passing of your Dad. That must be awful hard for you to lose your Dadand best Friend. All the best at moving forward and the repairs to Dad's tow truck. It is a sweet truck for you to keep your Dad on your mind while using it. Your Dad will be watching over you while you are working on it. All the best and take care Paul you do an awesome job.
Great to see you use the genuine “Spicer” U-Joint - I stopped shattering U-Joints after going back to Original Spicer joints. I am guessing I had 20 inferior quality joints in the junk stack, prior to returning to Spicer. The question at 13:45, I hear that reference interchangeably often while working on that combination of parts. Does not seem like a geographical only term. 😊
Grandpa knows that the next time he needs a new suspension, driveshaft, and tires on the old tow truck he just needs to loan it out to you and Matt for an afternoon.
Chip, what you reference as the driveline, we actually refer to as the powertrain here in Utah. Which is why we often use Drive shaft and drive line interchangeably.
Geez Paul, I didn't think you and Grampa Sherm ever went to the dump without coming back with something new to fix😉 Looks like the tow truck is ready to make another impossible recovery 😁 Good job everyone 👍👍
Driveline: everything between the output shaft of the transmission to the drive wheels. Transfer case, driveshaft, u-joints, Ring, pinion, spiders, axles, CV’s, etc. Driveshaft: The twisty stick between the transmission/transfer case/transaxle and the axle assembly. However, I agree with him. If we know what you’re talking about, your terminology for a car part is just fine. Ignore the RUclips professors.
Agreed, When Derek aka Vice Grip Garage calls a carburetor a " Fuel Happener " or a spark plug a "Sparkalator , rust holes "Weight Reduction" we (car guys) know what he is talking about, no need in splitting hairs.
Thanks for another fine video folks. Love the new shop cat, we've always had a mobile mouse trap around and they can be handy as well as a source of entertainment. The new rear suspension on the tow truck looks to be a big improvement, well done.
@9:03 I see a little work done on the GMC in the background that hasn't been uploaded. Looking forward to that along with the FJ build. Keep up the good work, love all your videos.
I really enjoy the episodes when you help out family. Love watching you and your Dad work and get things done and the way you use what you have on hand and can salvage to solve the problem at hand. Way to go!!! Another great video!
Thanks for the videos. I always installed the cardan shaft with the smaller part fixed in the gearbox. Prevents the ingress of water and mud and also protects the glove. (Google translate).
Not that 1 ton springs will ever ride or flex very good but I was amazed at how much it helped flex on some of my old jeeps by keeping the leaves oiled up. Usually sprayed silicone spray but even a light spray of used motor oil makes them work way better. With a load it's gonna flex one way or another I guess.

Nope, driveline is same as drive shaft.
At least in truck shops where we build and modify trucks all day every day.
If it's not a driveline then the thousands of shops i have seen through out the year's will have to change their signs to driveshaft repair. 😅🤣

The driveline includes everything in the chain from the engine to the drive wheels. A driveshaft is self explanatory :)
Of course you are correct but I kinda like Paul's propensity to just "make up" the vocab as needed. HILL PEOPLE! :-)
Chip, what you reference as the driveline, we actually refer to as the powertrain here in Utah. Which is why we often use Drive shaft and drive line interchangeably.
Drive line, drive shaft same thing, tow truck looks awesome, love you guys and God Bless You and Your Family
A drive line or train is the entire drive system a drive shaft is the individual part of the drive line/train.
Geez Paul, I didn't think you and Grampa Sherm ever went to the dump without coming back with something new to fix😉
Looks like the tow truck is ready to make another impossible recovery 😁
Good job everyone 👍👍
You guys don't sell your scrap for $, that piece of lands bed looked worth saving for a future project to me.
A definitely is worth saving but I'm out of room. And there's not a scrap yard close to me so I just give it to the dump and they scrap it
@@FabRats aww man I should have known no scrap yard, I mean your driving an hour for parts. Love the vids, "keeps" em coming...lol
That little dump trailer is badass...love the c10 ..it looks like it's built very well and deives good to...
I'm with Paul-it's a driveline, in total. Their are many parts in a driveline, including driveshafts.
You guys have "Heart",.. and that's something to be proud of. Love the channel.
Im glad im not the only that thought him calling a drive shaft the drive line was odd. Its Paul so i always gave it a pass lol.
Hell, I just always figured he knew something I didn't!! 😁
@@georgeorwell126 he did, the other term for the part. Like calling a transmission a gear box .
@9:03 I see a little work done on the GMC in the background that hasn't been uploaded. Looking forward to that along with the FJ build. Keep up the good work, love all your videos.
Come on Paul , cats are cool ! All my dog does is eat , poop , and bark - oh I forgot he wants constant attention lol
I really enjoy the episodes when you help out family. Love watching you and your Dad work and get things done and the way you use what you have on hand and can salvage to solve the problem at hand. Way to go!!! Another great video!
Quit being a cat hater Paul. It’ll keep the mice out of that shop of yours.
I’m with Paul... cats are nasty as pets
I'd rather have the mice.
Good job Paul...enjoy watch your video. Cool to see papa Sherm going through the gear on that truck...keep them videos coming...
Thanks for the drive shaft correction Michelle
Father and son working together. Great stuff.
Thanks for the videos. I always installed the cardan shaft with the smaller part fixed in the gearbox.
Prevents the ingress of water and mud and also protects the glove. (Google translate).
We do it this way so that the rocks don't hit the tube As easy
That truck is how i found your channel glad to see it getting some love
nice work Paul! the truck needed some TLC and some new and newerish parts!
