  • Hello and Welcome to another video where today we'll be taking a look at the Nvidia Geforce2 MX400 which is one of the worst card's ive still seen for sale in stores and online, sure it was mid-range...but that was 17 Years ago, so it's a wonder they can still sell it... But we like to see what cards can do more than what they can't.

      The 8600 GT was a case of a great upgrade for people with older hardware but was a horrible buy considering it was completely inadequate for the games that came out in the next two years. You could have had an HD 3850 or even a 9600 GT less than a year later for the same money and these GPUs handled themselves far better against 2008 games or even games like Left 4 Dead at higher resolutions like 1650x1050

      Razor MAN you have to step up to a 1080, since the mining craze made 1060 and 1070 prices explode, same goes for the rx470, 480, 570 and 580.

    During it's original run the MX400 was an awesome card. Retail outlets stocks were plentiful and pricing was very modest. Before Nvidia got shady and created the Geforce 4 MX420/440/460 series it was marketed in an honest fashion. A budget card you could play games on and a cheap option for OEM systems.

      It was just behind the Geforce 2 GTS, very nice card that i had back in 2002, and it was enough for most games of that time

      1080ti is not relative, as this is not the "Ti" of its generation. The "GeForce 2" was, MX400 was more like a 1070. 1080ti is just the best the best performance gpu of our day, which this mx 400 was not.
      Actually the MX or GeForce 2 generation did have a "Ti" but back then "Ti" meant was a budget efficient card. "Ti" meant what it did today, basically "the highest of a generation". But they only would make a "Ti" once a generation was obsolete. When GTX 3 gen was releasing stage 1 cards, they released a "Ti" of GTX 2 to ship as budget mid-range. Generations where much shorter back then and sometimes new gens would introduce compatibility issues. So "Ti" would still meant the best of generation, but it would only be released when that gen was replaced for those who preferred the 2 series. The Ge Force 2 Ti actually beat out alot of the early Ge Force 3's

      Did you forget to turn of vsync on the steam version ?
      gl_vsync 0 needs to be put in the console when starting it as last time i checked the option too turn it off in the menu doesnt work properly.
      With vsync on even my R9 280 struggled to keep a consistent framerate.

    I had nothing else to game on back in the day, so I even played games pretty far removed from its launch on it - Half Life 2, Halo CE, etc. It was..Pretty horrible, lol. I'd sometimes go to 800x600 and get 15fps, but back then I could tolerate it.

      Something is wrong with your card here - GeForce 2 MX400 is quite capable card for playing games from that era - I`m 100% sure you could play Half Life 1024x768. I played it on A LOT slower card (ATI RAGE PRO) on 800x600. Could be driver issue or the card is not functional 100%.

    • @televisionandcheese
      @televisionandcheese 7 лет назад +3

      +Feiticeira Fatale
      Yeah, that's what I was thinking, my Geforce 2 Ti, although more powerful, wasn't much ahead, I'm sure a solid 30-40 fps at least in HL1 at 1280x1024. I think is a driver issue, probably because this card is brand new somehow.

    • @Mini-z1994
      @Mini-z1994 7 лет назад +2

      The steam version of half-life forces vsync on which needs "gl_vsync 0" before you launch a map too actually turn it off.
      Even my factory overclocked R9 280 struggled to keep it smooth in some places with it on when vsync was enabled.

    • @GraveUypo
      @GraveUypo 7 лет назад +2

      you could easily play hl @ 1280x960 with this card.
      heck, half life would almost constantly hit fps cap on my voodoo2 8mb paired with an athlon 700mhz (although only @ 640x480 as a single card. it could do it at 1024x768 with a sli setup though). at the time i had a geforce 2 GTS, which is one model above the mx400 and not that much faster, and it would run any of the then current games @ 1280x960 no sweat. the first game to give it a run for its money was ut2003

  • @ghost085
    @ghost085 7 лет назад +54

    This was the first GeForce I got as a kid. I paired it with an AMD K6-2 and got terrible performance, not better than with my then current Trident Blade 3D card (except in OpenGL games, were I saw a clear improvement) . I was so mad that I demanded a refund on the card. Years later I learned that my CPU was a serious bottleneck and that it hasn't been the card's fault.

    • @cpufreak101
      @cpufreak101 7 лет назад +3

      Mighty Duck ah a trident Blade3D, I got one of those out of a dump. I somehow got it working on a modern windows 7 PC, with the official driver installed. Even at 800X600 it literally struggled to run the desktop. You know a card is complete trash when it cannot even run the desktop at at least 30 FPS, I'd estimate the mouse pointer was moving at like 15, of course I didn't try any games on it, as from reviews I seen from back in the day, it was kinda shit when it was new 20 years ago...

    • @ghost085
      @ghost085 7 лет назад +2

      Justin Noker Well, Windows 7 is overkill for that card. But in its day it could run Half Life and Need for Speed III respectably.

      K6II 550 is roughly as fast as a Pentium II 400, the K6III as well as the K6II+ / K6III+ were far better but were a rarity even then. The motherboard cache made a HUGE difference on Socket 7 machines too as well as the chipset used. If it was no cache and the chipset was SIS you better learn to be patient.

    You know what? I might buy one of these! I have a 15 year old laptop lying around in a box, and I plan to repair the thing. It’s been falling apart for years and it’s a bit of wreck these days, missing parts, broken parts, all sorts of issues including some fried drivers preventing it from booting. Getting parts is getting harder and harder and I’m worried I’m gonna lose the poor thing, so as this GPU would actually be an upgrade compared to the potato it used back in the day, (which I’m not sure is even working anymore.) and might be worth it. Then again though, if I can find a more powerful card that works with such ancient architecture, I’ll probably get one of them instead.

    Budget-Builds Official: The MX400 was a good card for it's era 2002/2003 , considering that the wholesale predecessor of this card for mainstream desktops at the time was the GeForce MX 100/200. Many of us spent our youth running everything from Quake 3 and Serious Sam 2, to emulators and video editors on such 32 and 64MB AGP cards.

    I think every 400-600 dollar pre-built PC came with one of these back in the day. My HP Pavilion had one and it was OK for gaming as long as you didn't care too much about high settings. I couldn't play with more than 1024x768 anyway, so that was fine. I think the successor to this card was the Geforce 4 MX-400 (which wasn't a real Geforce 4, but a card based on the Geforce 2 generation) and Geforce FX 5200.

    I remember my first PC. AMD Spitfire @ 650MHz, 512MB RAM, 20GB HDD and... GeForce4MX440... I've literally rap3d this PC when I had it. I recall that I wanted to play Postal2. So I installed it and on it's first run the game popped me a message stating that my PC is far below the minimum system requirements and if I continue it will impact the game's performance. Back then I didn't care so I went on. What impressed me was that I could run the game maxed out! All gfx details were set to max and the resolution too. It ran perfectly fine except when I died because when you die in Postal2 you literally drop everything you have around your corpse. And when all those objects were spawned in the game world my FPS went to shit for a few seconds and then it was all normal.

    You made a slight mistake in this video and I thought you might want to know. The GeForce2 MX 400 variant that you have is an ultra budget 64-bit SDR variant. It's not the actual MX 400 as per nVIDIA spec which used 128-bit SDR. There are also 64-bit DDR variants but they don't apply here. Your card is like this one: www.ebay.com/itm/Inno3D-MX400-64-Bit-64MB-AGP-VGA-Garphics-Card-FREE-SHIP-/222264336668
    Your card is severely crippled. If you'd like to see the GeForce 2 MX 400 in all of its glory than look no further than the Hercules 3D Prophet II MX: www.vgamuseum.info/index.php/cpu/item/242-nvidia-geforce2-mx

    I had the PNY version in my first gaming pc back in 2001. Back then I saw the night and day difference an accelerator card could do paired with an AMD Duron 1000mhz and 128mb of ram. The fact it's still being sold new now is absurd. Unless you're doing a Windows 98/XP circa 2001 retro PC it's pretty useless now.

    For an early 2000s card it's really not that bad. I had this in my budget PC that had AMD Duron 1,3 GHz + 256 MB SDRAM and this card, i think it was the weaker MX200 version. It was easily overclockable to about 220 MHz clock speed without any additional cooling required.
    Games I've played on this setup:
    -GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas. All ran acceptably in 640x480, 20-40 FPS
    -Soldier of Fortune 2
    -Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy
    -Max Payne 2
    -Gothic 1 and 2
    I had to run most of them in 640x480, sometimes 800x600. It was not until 2005-ish where I ran into problems where games wouldn't launch at all due to shader requirements. This was the point of changing the card to 6600GT which was one of the best budget cards ever released

So I put it on a cardboard box as a basic testing area, and it worked! So after testing it, I threw it into a spare ATX case my dad had. It had 2GB DDR3, now it has 4GB DDR3 RAM and it's going to be 8GB DDR3. And it was $5. Yes, $5.

    Looks like a driver problem. The original HalfLife ran well on that gpu in 1600x1200 with an athlon xp slower than that p4. Desktop mswindows xp ran fine in a resolution that high and with 2 monitors. You'd need to try different drivers per game. In win-xp and win98, I played (on low settings) farcry and hl2 on a 1.4GHz p4 on that card with only 32meg video RAM. In the day, the card was low power and gave DVI and svideo on win95, with plenty driver choices.

    Back in the day I bought the PCI variant of this card, it is 128 mb which back in the day was overkill. It was a damn good gpu for it's time, there wasn't anything that it couldn't run back in the day. This card helped me through my first days in Ragnarok Online which makes it hold a special place in my heart. It still works, in fact the whole pc works besides the original hard drive that died like 12 years ago and to be fair it runs Metal Gear Solid Integral even better (better pixels) than my geforce 9500 and 770 because it supports a specific type of textures that went unsupported sometime after the jump to the AGP port.

    I think I did have a MX 200 or MX 400 back in the day, it runs original half-life, GTA VC and many other games of its time quite decently, on 800x600 resolution. Since most monitors back then only support up to 1024x768, they were the best bang for their buck.

    Nuts how much Technology improves in such a "short" amount of Time. Imagine what we'll have in like 20 or so years, you wont be picking different cards and manufacturers because the Performance is better because Performence is as good as it would ever have to be. You'd be choosing between manufacturers because that one Card looks cooler.
