See how to do a secondary air filter replacement on your YXZ1000R in this video from Partzilla.com. This job-- if you follow the service manual-- is a biggie: remove the fender, remove the bed, remove the roll cage, remove the seats, change the filter.
But we’re going after it another way. John will show you how to use a couple of extensions, a swivel, and some electrical tape to attack the eleven 8mm screws that hold the air box cover in place. You’ll need to remove the rear wheel, but this approach saves you a lot of work. And watch closely to see how John uses the electrical tape to stabilize the swivel AND keep a bolt in place while he gets to one particularly hard-to-reach location.
We’re using a GYTR performance replacement air filter for our Yamaha YXZ1000R, but there’s also a stock filter. Find it here: www.partzilla....

Great video. Everyone on the forums dread removing that filter. Your process didn't seem that bad.

OMG, this was so much easier than following the manual. I've been putting this maintenance off for too long now. I have used an R2C dry filter since new and clean it with compressed air every 1000 miles.. I have just over 9000 miles on my 2016 YXZ, and believe it or not, the secondary still looked serviceable, but of course I put in a new K&N anyhow. Thank you sir

how completely asinine of a process just to get at a regular maintenance item. Pull the cage?

How does oil get in the intake? I bought a brand new 2019 YXZ. I upgraded to a KnN secondary filter. I replaced it when it had 5 miles on the SxS and it had oil in the intake, just like this one. Why/how does that happen?
