Finished My Game Without Motivation

- After about 3 weeks of working on a game I had no motivation for anymore, I finally finished it!
This is the devlog of that game, which is called neon maze, a terrible name for a terrible game.
Hopefully you still enjoy the video though, because I put quite a bit of effort into it.

Oops, forgot to make the download file public, now you can actually play the game: deynum.itch.io/neon-maze
:)
Fantastic finishing the project. I can understand the lack of motivation. I find mine going up and down like a rollercoaster but luckily the more progress there is the more motivated you can be.
Congrats! I feel like it’s incredibly important to create shorter games that you can actually finish. It boosts your confidence. :D
"Nostalgia for a game I've never played" is such a brilliant explanation of that aesthetic. I feel that, hard. Congratulations on finishing. You're over that hurdle again, and you're *consciously* learning, taking an active role in your progression. It's all positive, and I'm glad.
You completed A GAME! That’s a big accomplishment itself, good job and congratulations!!
Awesome video! I've been having the same problem; decided to make Rock, Paper, Scissors and I still found ways to make it too complicated 😅
Hey man, your last couple of videos inspired me to also just start very simple with my games and finish them so that I can learn more faster and also keep my motivation. I really like this video as well. I will be following you to see how that goes for you.
Cool! Motivaates me to keep going aswell
Congrats for not adding another game to the "Failed Games" list! Glad you finished it.
"simpler, smaller projects"...wow have I said that to myself so many times
great stuff!
also unity has a github repo with an auto-tiling package, making that process a lot less tedious :)
A-Mazing!
I'm glad to see it done! Also, I can't wait for my blooming computer to get fixed so I can play it!
I suggest to you making a top down rpg, you need colors in your games.
So, I'm watching your videos in order, and playing all the games you make.
This game is even better than you think it is.
Note how the mechanics naturally had me reacting: I would grab a light power-up, move into the next room (quickly, because I know that it's limited) and as soon as I enter the next room, two things immediately happen: 1) My eyes rapidly dart about, trying to learn the whole level layout as quickly as possible, and 2) I make a mad dash toward any pick-ups while keeping the exit path in mind.
Not only that, but you managed to make the rooms just small enough that I could, with some focus, memorize the room, _and_ the light lasts long enough that I don't feel like the power-up is teasing me. It gives me ample time, but the maze is still challenging.
I beat the game and quite enjoyed it, although now my wrist aches. I wish you'd added a "press-and-hold" feature! XD
Eh-hem niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice
congrats!.
5:41 I just want to say.. this is a good game! because you finish it!, I know how hard is to finish a game, even a small game is hard to finish and you did great work and finish this game!, I'm new in this channel but I just want to tell you, you work hard to finish this game and I'm going to play this!!
Very great that you forced yourself to finish a game! It's a very important skill to learn (I know that feeling when you have no motivation...). The maze is very cool. I'm also working on a maze game (it's a bit different than yours) since 5 months and I'm currently fixing some bugs, before I release it at the end of this week! I'll go to your itch page and play your maze game, it seems quite fun! :-)
I’m making a game named grapes there’s currently 2 levels and a credits button that’s all I’m heavenly inspired by you
Great video, thanks man. I've been there so many times, wish I had your determination to just keep going. :D
Thanks man, this was a really helpful video for me to hear. It's the exact advice/story I needed to hear to help me in finishing some of my upcoming music. (Also really awesome job for pushing through when all the motivation was gone, that's a challenging thing to do)
K
Congrats on finishing the game. The gameplay is a bit basic but visually looks great.
I always say you don't finish games with motivation, you finish games with discipline! Motivation is just bursts of extra energy. My devlog game I made in 1 year and it will be released on steam in 2 weeks yay. I just worked on it a bit everyday :D I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it all the time haha.
I completely get that, but sadly enough my discipline is really bad, I can't get anything done and procrastination is a real problem
nice!!
Good job!
Do you happen to have a large main RUclips channel? Your video quality is far above what 1k sub channels normally have.
No I don't, this is the largest youtube channel I have, so I guess I'll take it as a compliment
Really amazing, love that tile set a lot.
I really like the game's neon aesthetic. Has a cool Tron look!
👍
You didn't fail making those games you just learned more about making games
I guess that's another way you could look at it
well done : D
yey you finished it!
I would suggest using raycasting next time, instead of using colliders as child objects.
So like, you can raycast from the center of the box, to a little bit above the box to check if anything is in the way, and if something is in the way, then check if it's a wall or locked door, then disable movement going that way.
Yeah that's probably a better way to do it but I still haven't quite figured out how raycasting works
@@Deynum it's really simple honestly! Plus one of the benefits of raycasting is that you can shoot many Ray's without making your computer start to slow down, whereas colliders have go be checked and it becomes a lot harder on the pc.
There's no download link on the itch.io page
Really? That's strange, thanks for telling me
Alright, fixed it
I'd love it if, for each of these videos, you would say what you learned making that game. For instance, a way to code something, regarding lighting, how to draw something, _et cetera._
Like, you made this game and pushed through having no motivation. That's solid, but what did you learn, technically, in making the game?
So relatable!
You really need to use autotiles, it doesn't make any sens to do it by hand
I really should've used it but I am just very dumb and didn't know how it worked and didn't want to learn it for a project that wasn't worth it
@@Deynum If you use godot it takes about a minute to do, this would have been much easier
But I don't use Godot sadly enough
@@Deynum doesn't looks hard in Unity too ruclips.net/video/Ky0sV9pua-E/видео.html
maybe a dumb question, but why didn't you create a RuleBasedTile?
Because I'm dumb and not very good with anything
@@Deynum that’s a reasonable answer
Nice ;D
if you want to create finish game i have one method i use the method is first create you the basic systems wean you make the base off the game the you upload the game in the order to take feedback if the game is large or something you want to create but you dont have the knowledge or the time to create the need to follow that method is you leaving the project and you continue this project wean you think you are ready and the last and most important re use the stuff you have create before i use that method all the time
hmm, small projects really do seem like a great way to keep consistent and stick with things through to the end
maybe you could make different colors on different parts of maze
It is super important to have motivation when making games
What’s the script to only make it move by one block?
