Although it’s not apples to apples (Top trim vs mid trim) they’re still the same price. Hyundai sent this specific vehicle and the Kicks was what I could readily get my hands on. Let me know what you think!

If I made my choice based on a "first time purchase" for a son/daughter I would probably go Nissan kicks. I have owned Nissans since 1983!!! Having said that I can tell u that anyone can make a lemon! The kicks for first time teenagers & considering economics & safety as the 2 priorities. U can get a kicks with comparible features as the Kona for about $2500-$3k cheaper.
      (Check all dealerships).
The same difference in gas saving depending on your day 2 day & yearly travels can also save u another $1k-$1500. In 3-5 years you'll trade that in for what a now more experienced driver will then need & want!
With that said, if it is the "second vehicle" to buy for a son/daughter it would most likely be the Hyundai Kona. The warranty is better, the safety features & refinements are a little more advanced & the second vehicle purchase for most folks will include safety, tech, & " more power". So, by 2022-3 both will have multiple engines or configurations, (turbo) & safety advancements. I can tell u that the dealership can still make the difference in servicing, loaner vehicles, etc. Know your dealership! Also, don't be shy, walk into the maintenance repair shops & ask the qualified mechanic @ lunch time what he thinks about the dependability of the vehicle & specific issues they see over & over & how they fix the cars! These people normally drive a completely different vehicle & have no loyalty to lie!!!! Trust me, I've bought expensive commercial vehicles & the people who work on these vehicles daily will tell u if they are as good as the competition! Or, who indeed has the best & why! Mechanics know!
      Be blessed.

    • @kurtcooper3699
      @kurtcooper3699 4 года назад

I wanted to address one more issue. If your not in sunny Florida & weather like snow is a concern then I probably buy a Subaru crosstrek or outback all wheel drive. Neither Kona or kicks have the history & dependability or durability of the Subaru. The mid level trims (crosstrek), are priced similar to the Kona.

Two months ago we purchased a new 2018 Hyundai Kona SE , and are extremely pleased with it so far. The color is called Crystal Black metallic with black and gray interior. In 2 months we have almost 5 thousand miles on it without 1 complaint. The ride is pretty good considering the overall size. It has a 2.0 liter engine matched up with the 6 speed automatic transmission. Gas mileage on the highway is averaging about 35 mpg. Really happy with that. And of course you can't beat Hyundai's 5 year 60 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Nissan can't touch that. This is our 5th Hyundai product and no problems out of any of them.

      Curiosity question.
I drive 70 miles a day and 60 of that is open tollway so I am doing as optimal as I can for MPG. Do you actually calculate with the gas you use or just use the monitor? I am only getting about 31-32 and the monitor claims 35-36

I had the kicks as a rental car and it was surprisingly nice. The plastics on the interior have almost a rubberized texture and the steering is adaptive to its nice and light in parking lots but firmer and direct feeling on the highway. The kicks though can really be seen as the preplacement for the versa note since it doesn't come with the same options list as most cuvs.

Thanks Trish! Very cool...it’s nice to stick with a brand you’re used to. Don’t blame you in the Nissan CVT...I’ve heard of horror stories on other cars. Hope you enjoy the Kona when you get it!

The Kona limited trim manufactured after June 2018 have the improved headlights. The initial ones were a bit weak. I bought a white limited with gray interior and AWD. Getting 32mpg average using it as a commuter car. It is a short wheelbase ride (jostles you some) but ok for what it is designed to do (be a hatchback on stilts).

Have been a Hyundai Girl since 2001. Hubby bought me an Elantra next day after he married me. We just sold our 5th Hyundai which was my Veloster. Considering the Kona if not will get another Veloster. Just going to wait for the right price and color. So many Black, Silvers and Whites. Want a brighter color like the Orange Kona!

I prefer the Kona, hands down. I care about the driving more than the materials of the interior. Something tells me the higher trim line of the Kona may have a bit more leather and shiny carbon plastic detailing.

I have the 2.0 engine in my 2018 Elantra, 6 speed manual transmission. The Kona shares the same one. It's quiet and I get 47-48mpg in the warmer weather. 42 mpg in the winter with shows on. I have 49k on it. Sounds like it did on day one. It probably helps that I baby it and change the synthetic oil every 4k. Trying to go a little longer but I'm old school. I will say it's not a very fast car but I don't drive fast anyway but another 20hp would have been nice. Also it's nice because there's no gdi and no turbo. Should be reliable.

The Kona is the clear winner. Reason why is because of the value, transmission and warranty that you get. I'll take a 6-speed automatic transmission over a CVT any day of the week. Smooth shifts instead of that rubberband feel you get with a CVT. Also conventional 6-speed automatics are far more reliable. You can get a base Kona SE with AWD for $23K which is a heck of a bargain along with a multi-link rear suspension which makes a difference. Hyundai's 10yr/100K warranty is just icing on the cake.

I know several people with Kicks that have been regularly getting over 40 mpg with it. Personally the only way i would consider the Kicks is if it came with a regular automatic transmission not a CVT and/or a 6-spd manual transmission. For 2020 the Kicks engine has been downgraded to 122 hp, apparently as added protection to the CVT lol.

Purchased a 2019 kicks a few months ago. Love it so far, tires are crap in our VT winter weather so I need to get some winters but other than that, nice and roomy, perfect size, great gas mileage. Reminds me of my 2007 Pontiac vibe which is still going strong at 220 + thousand miles.

Cargo area better in the Nissan although rear seats not even close to flat when down. The Nissan Rogue Sport (aka Qashqai) is larger but has slightly less cargo space. Kicks and Qashqai are pretty close together, almost compete with each other. I like the look of the Kona better, more interesting.

I own a 2018 Kona. There are three models, two have the 1.6 turbo engine and the other, a straight 2.0.
Because I bought the car with no money down, I had to keep my costs down, so I bought the lowest level with the 2.0.
    MISTAKE !!!
I was coming from a 2013 Cruze with a 1.4 turbo and it was great. The 2.0 engine is seriously under powered.
As far as space, my family of three drove Chicago to OBX and it was fine for all of our luggage and gear.
Overall, it is a fine car for the cost but if you can, buy the upgraded model !!

Kona is an SUV that drives like a hatchback and that's a good thing. Maybe that's why it won car of the year in Spain and US at the same time. Once you get over the plastics and you fit at the back seat, everything else is good.
